Electron-polaron dichotomy of charge carriers in perovskite oxides

Many transition metal oxides (TMOs) are Mott insulators due to strong Coulomb repulsion between electrons, and exhibit metal-insulator transitions (MITs) whose mechanisms are not always fully understood. Unlike most TMOs, minute doping in CaMnO3 induces a metallic state without any structural transformations. This material is thus an ideal platform to explore band formation through the MIT. Here, we use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to visualize how electrons delocalize and couple to phonons in CaMnO3. We show the development of a Fermi surface where mobile electrons coexist with heavier carriers, strongly coupled polarons. The latter originate from a boost of the electron-phonon interaction (EPI). This finding brings to light the role that the EPI can play in MITs even caused by purely electronic mechanisms. Our discovery of the EPI-induced dichotomy of the charge carriers explains the transport response of Ce-doped CaMnO3 and suggests strategies to engineer quantum matter from TMOs.

Coulomb and electron-phonon interactions in metals

An accurate and consistent theory of phonons in metals requires that all long-range Coulomb interactions between charged particles (electrons and ions) be treated on equal footing. So far, all attempts to deal with this non-perturbative system were relying on uncontrolled approximations in the absence of small parameters. In this work, we develop the Diagrammatic Monte Carlo approach for a two-component Coulomb system that obtains the solution to this fundamental problem in an approximation free way by computing vertex corrections from higher-order skeleton graphs. The feasibility of the method is demonstrated by calculating the spectrum of longitudinal acoustic phonons in a simple cubic lattice, determining their sound velocity, and obtaining the phonon spectral densities by analytic continuation of the Matsubara Green's functions. Final results are checked against the lowest-order fully self-consistent GW-approximation in both adiabatic and non-adiabatic regimes.

Dark Continuum in the Spectral Function of the Resonant Fermi Polaron

We present controlled numerical results for the ground state spectral function of the resonant Fermi polaron in three dimensions. We establish the existence of a "dark continuum"---a region of anomalously low spectral weight between the narrow polaron peak and the rest of the spectral continuum. The dark continuum develops when the s-wave scattering length is of the order of the inverse Fermi wavevector, $a\lesssim 1/k_{\rm F}$, i.e. in the absence of a small interaction-related parameter when the spectral weight is not expected to feature a near-perfect gap structure after the polaron peak.

Electric transport in three-dimensional Skyrmion/monopole crystal

We study theoretically the transport properties of a three-dimensional spin texture made from three orthogonal helices, which is essentially a lattice of monopole-antimonopole pairs connected by Skyrmion strings. This spin structure is proposed for MnGe based on the neutron scattering experiment as well as the Lorentz transmission electron microscopy observation. Equipped with a sophisticated spectral analysis method, we adopt finite temperature Green's function technique to calculate the longitudinal dc electric transport in such system. We consider conduction electrons interacting with spin waves of the topologically nontrivial spin texture, wherein fluctuations of monopolar emergent magnetic field enter. We study in detail the behavior of electric resistivity under the influence of temperature, external magnetic field and a characteristic monopole motion, especially a novel magnetoresistivity effect describing the latest experimental observations in MnGe, wherein a topological phase transition signifying strong correlation is identified.

Diagrammatic Monte Carlo method for many-polaron problems

We introduce the first bold diagrammatic Monte Carlo approach to deal with polaron problems at finite density non-perturbatively, i.e., by including vertex corrections to high orders. Using Holstein model on a square lattice as a prototypical example, we demonstrate that our method is capable of providing accurate results in the thermodynamic limit in all regimes from renormalized Fermi-liquid to single polarons, across the non-adiabatic region where Fermi and Debye energies are of the same order of magnitude. By accounting for vertex corrections the accuracy of theoretical description is increased by orders of magnitude relative to the lowest-order self-consistent Born approximation employed in most studies. We also find that for electron-phonon coupling typical for real materials, the quasiparticle effective mass increases and the quasiparticle residue decreases with increasing the system density.

Distribution of localized states from fine analysis of electron spin resonance spectra of organic semiconductors: Physical meaning and methodology

We develop an analytical method for the processing of electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra. The goal is to obtain the distributions of trapped carriers over both their degree of localization and their binding energy in semiconductor crystals or films composed of regularly aligned organic molecules [Phys. Rev. Lett. v. 104, 056602 (2010)]. Our method has two steps. We first carry out a fine analysis of the shape of the ESR spectra due to the trapped carriers; this reveals the distribution of the trap density of the states over the degree of localization. This analysis is based on the reasonable assumption that the linewidth of the trapped carriers is predetermined by their degree of localization because of the hyperfine mechanism. We then transform the distribution over the degree of localization into a distribution over the binding energies. The transformation uses the relationships between the binding energies and the localization parameters of the trapped carriers. The particular relation for the system under study is obtained by the Holstein model for trapped polarons using a diagrammatic Monte Carlo analysis. We illustrate the application of the method to pentacene organic thin-film transistors.

Optical conductivity of the Holstein polaron

The Momentum Average approximation is used to derive a new kind of non-perturbational analytical expression for the optical conductivity (OC) of a Holstein polaron at zero temperature. This provides insight into the shape of the OC, by linking it to the structure of the polaron's phonon cloud. Our method works in any dimension, properly enforces selection rules, can be systematically improved, and also generalizes to momentum-dependent couplings. Its accuracy is demonstrated by a comparison with the first detailed set of three-dimensional numerical OC results, obtained using the approximation-free diagrammatic Monte Carlo method.
