Higher order homogenization for random non-autonomous parabolic operators

We consider Cauchy problem for a divergence form second order parabolic operator with rapidly oscillating coefficients that are periodic in spatial variables and random stationary ergodic in time. As was proved in [24] and [12] in this case the homogenized operator is deterministic. The paper focuses on non-diffusive scaling, when the oscillation in spatial variables is faster than that in temporal variable. Our goal is to study the asymptotic behaviour of the normalized difference between solutions of the original and the homogenized problems.

A variational theory of convolution-type functionals

We provide a general treatment of perturbations of a class of functionals modeled on convolution energies with integrable kernel which approximate the $p$-th norm of the gradient as the kernel is scaled by letting a small parameter $\varepsilon$ tend to $0$. We first provide the necessary functional-analytic tools to show coerciveness in $L^p$. The main result is a compactness and integral-representation theorem which shows that limits of convolution-type energies is a standard local integral functional with $p$-growth defined on a Sobolev space. This result is applied to obtain periodic homogenization results, to study applications to functionals defined on point-clouds, to stochastic homogenization and to the study of limits of the related gradient flows.

Homogenization of ferromagnetic energies on Poisson random sets in the plane

We prove that by scaling nearest-neighbour ferromagnetic energies defined on Poisson random sets in the plane we obtain an isotropic perimeter energy with a surface tension characterised by an asymptotic formula. The result relies on proving that cells with `very long' or `very short' edges of the corresponding Voronoi tessellation can be neglected. In this way we may apply Geometry Measure Theory tools to define a compact convergence, and a characterisation of metric properties of clusters of Voronoi cells using limit theorems for subadditive processes.

Homogenization of the linearized ionic transport equations in random porous media

In this paper we extend the homogenization results obtained in (G. Allaire, A. Mikelić, A. Piatnitski, J. Math. Phys. 51 (2010), 123103) for a system of partial differential equations describing the transport of a N-component electrolyte in a dilute Newtonian solvent through a rigid periodic porous medium, to the case of random disperse porous media. We present a study of the nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann equation in a random medium, establish convergence of the stochastic homogenization procedure and prove well-posedness of the two-scale homogenized equations. In addition, after separating scales, we prove that the effective tensor satisfies the so-called Onsager properties, that is the tensor is symmetric and positive definite. This result shows that the Onsager theory applies to random porous media. The strong convergence of the fluxes is also established.

Large Deviations for Markov jump processes in periodic and locally periodic environments

The paper deals with a family of jump Markov process defined in a medium with a periodic or locally periodic microstructure. We assume that the generator of the process is a zero order convolution type operator with rapidly oscillating locally periodic coefficient and, under natural ellipticity and localization conditions, show that the family satisfies the large deviation principle in the path space equipped with Skorokhod topology. The corresponding rate function is defined in terms of a family of auxiliary periodic spectral problems.

On the fundamental solution of heat and stochastic heat equations

We consider the generic divergence form second order parabolic equation with coefficients that are regular in the spatial variables and just measurable in time. We show that the spatial derivatives of its fundamental solution admit upper bounds that agree with the Aronson type estimate and only depend on the ellipticity constants of the equation and the L $\infty$ norm of the spatial derivatives of its coefficients. We also study the corresponding stochastic partial differential equations and prove that under natural assumptions on the noise the equation admits a mild solution, given by anticipating stochastic integration.

Topological singularities in periodic media: Ginzburg-Landau and core-radius approaches

We describe the emergence of topological singularities in periodic media within the Ginzburg-Landau model and the core-radius approach. The energy functionals of both models are denoted by $E_{\varepsilon,δ}$, where $\varepsilon$ represent the coherence length (in the Ginzburg-Landau model) or the core-radius size (in the core-radius approach) and $δ$ denotes the periodicity scale. We carry out the $Γ$-convergence analysis of $E_{\varepsilon,δ}$ as $\varepsilon\to 0$ and $δ=δ_{\varepsilon}\to 0$ in the $|\log\varepsilon|$ scaling regime, showing that the $Γ$-limit consists in the energy cost of finitely many vortex-like point singularities of integer degree. After introducing the scale parameter (upon extraction of subsequences) $$ λ=\min\Bigl\{1,\lim_{\varepsilon\to0} {|\log δ_{\varepsilon}|\over|\log{\varepsilon}|}\Bigr\}, $$ we show that in a sense we always have a separation-of-scale effect: at scales less than $\varepsilon^λ$ we first have a concentration process around some vortices whose location is subsequently optimized, while for scales larger than $\varepsilon^λ$ the concentration process takes place "after" homogenization.

Asymptotics of fundamental solutions for time fractional equations with convolution kernels

The paper deals with the large time asymptotic of the fundamental solution for a time fractional evolution equation for a convolution type operator. In this equation we use a Caputo time derivative of order $α$ with $α\in(0,1)$, and assume that the convolution kernel of the spatial operator is symmetric, integrable and shows a super-exponential decay at infinity. Under these assumptions we describe the point-wise asymptotic behavior of the fundamental solution in all space-time regions.

Homogenization of random convolution energies in heterogeneous and perforated domains

We prove a homogenization theorem for a class of quadratic convolution energies with random coefficients. Under suitably stated hypotheses of ergodicity and stationarity we prove that the $Γ$-limit of such energy is almost surely a deterministic quadratic Dirichlet-type integral functional, whose integrand can be characterized through an asymptotic formula. The proof of this characterization relies on results on the asymptotic behaviour of subadditive processes. The proof of the limit theorem uses a blow-up technique common for local energies, that can be extended to this `asymptotically-local' case. As a particular application we derive a homogenization theorem on random perforated domains.

Periodic homogenization of non-local operators with a convolution type kernel

The paper deals with homogenization problem for a non-local linear operator with a kernel of convolution type in a medium with a periodic structure. We consider the natural diffusive scaling of this operator and study the limit behaviour of the rescaled operators as the scaling parameter tends to 0. More precisely we show that in the topology of resolvent convergence the family of rescaled operators converges to a second order elliptic operator with constant coefficients. We also prove the convergence of the corresponding semigroups both in $L^2$ space and the space of continuous functions, and show that for the related family of Markov processes the invariance principle holds.

Homogenization of random parabolic operators. Diffusion approximation

The paper deals with homogenization of divergence form second order parabolic operators whose coefficients are periodic in spatial variables and random stationary in time. Under proper mixing assumptions, we study the limit behaviour of the normalized difference between solutions of the original and the homogenized problems. The asymptotic behaviour of this difference depends crucially on the ratio between spatial and temporal scaling factors. Here we study the case of self-similar parabolic diffusion scaling.

Role of non-ideality for the ion transport in porous media: derivation of the macroscopic equations using upscaling

This paper is devoted to the homogenization (or upscaling) of a system of partial differential equations describing the non-ideal transport of a N-component electrolyte in a dilute Newtonian solvent through a rigid porous medium. Realistic non-ideal effects are taken into account by an approach based on the mean spherical approximation (MSA) model which takes into account finite size ions and screening effects. We first consider equilibrium solutions in the absence of external forces. In such a case, the velocity and diffusive fluxes vanish and the equilibrium electrostatic potential is the solution of a variant of Poisson-Boltzmann equation coupled with algebraic equations. Contrary to the ideal case, this nonlinear equation has no monotone structure. However, based on invariant region estimates for Poisson-Boltzmann equation and for small characteristic value of the solute packing fraction, we prove existence of at least one solution. To our knowledge this existence result is new at this level of generality. When the motion is governed by a small static electric field and a small hydrodynamic force, we generalize O'Brien's argument to deduce a linearized model. Our second main result is the rigorous homogenization of these linearized equations and the proof that the effective tensor satisfies Onsager properties, namely is symmetric positive definite. We eventually make numerical comparisons with the ideal case. Our numerical results show that the MSA model confirms qualitatively the conclusions obtained using the ideal model but there are quantitative differences arising that can be important at high charge or high concentrations.

Random homogenisation of a highly oscillatory singular potential

In this article, we consider the problem of homogenising the linear heat equation perturbed by a rapidly oscillating random potential. We consider the situation where the space-time scaling of the potential's oscillations is \textit{not} given by the diffusion scaling that leaves the heat equation invariant. Instead, we treat the case where spatial oscillations are much faster than temporal oscillations. Under suitable scaling of the amplitude of the potential, we prove convergence to a deterministic heat equation with constant potential, thus completing the results previously obtained in \cite{MR2962093}.

Asymptotic analysis of the Poisson-Boltzmann equation describing electrokinetics in porous media

We consider the Poisson-Boltzmann equation in a periodic cell, representative of a porous medium. It is a model for the electrostatic distribution of $N$ chemical species diluted in a liquid at rest, occupying the pore space with charged solid boundaries. We study the asymptotic behavior of its solution depending on a parameter $β$ which is the square of the ratio between a characteristic pore length and the Debye length. For small $β$ we identify the limit problem which is still a nonlinear Poisson equation involving only one species with maximal valence, opposite to the average of the given surface charge density. This result justifies the {\it Donnan effect}, observing that the ions for which the charge is the one of the solid phase are expelled from the pores. For large $β$ we prove that the solution behaves like a boundary layer near the pore walls and is constant far away in the bulk. Our analysis is valid for Neumann boundary conditions (namely for imposed surface charge densities) and establishes rigorously that solid interfaces are uncoupled from the bulk fluid, so that the simplified additive theories, such as the one of the popular Derjaguin, Landau, Verwey and Overbeek (DLVO) approach, can be used. We show that the asymptotic behavior is completely different in the case of Dirichlet boundary conditions (namely for imposed surface potential).

Einstein relation for reversible diffusions in random environment

We consider reversible diffusions in random environment and prove the Einstein relation for this model. It says that the derivative of the effective velocity under an additional local drift equals the diffusivity of the model without drift. The Einstein relation is conjectured to hold for a variety of models but is proved insofar only in particular cases. Our proof makes use of homogenization arguments, the Girsanov transform, and a refinement of the regeneration times introduced by Lian Shen in [20].

Localization effect for a spectral problem in a perforated domain with Fourier boundary cconditions

We consider a homogenization of elliptic spectral problem stated in a perforated domain, Fourier boundary conditions being imposed on the boundary of perforation. The presence of a locally periodic coefficient in the boundary operator gives rise to the effect of a localization of the eigenfunctions. Moreover, the limit behaviour of the lower part of the spectrum can be described in terms of an auxiliary harmonic oscillator operator. We describe the asymptotics of the eigenpairs and derive the estimates for the rate of convergence.

On the first eigenpair of singularly perturbed operators with oscillating coefficients

The paper deals with a Dirichlet spectral problem for a singularly perturbed second order elliptic operator with rapidly oscillating locally periodic coefficients. We study the limit behaviour of the first eigenpair (ground state) of this problem. The main tool in deriving the limit (effective) problem is the viscosity solutions technique for Hamilton-Jacobi equations. The effective problem need not have a unique solution. We study the non-uniqueness issue in a particular case of zero potential and construct the higher order term of the ground state asymptotics.
