Flux growth of Sr(n+1)Ir(n)O(3n+1) [n=1, 2, infinity] crystals

Single crystals of iridates are usually grown by a flux method well above the boiling point of the SrCl2 solvent. This leads to non-equilibrium growth conditions and dramatically shortens the lifetime of expensive Pt crucibles. Here, we report the growth of Sr2IrO4, Sr3Ir2O7 and SrIrO3 single crystals in a reproducible way by using anhydrous SrCl2 flux well below its boiling point. We show that the yield of the different phases strongly depends on the nutrient/solvent ratio for fixed soak temperature and cooling rate. Using this low-temperature growth approach generally leads to a lower temperature-independent contribution to the magnetic susceptibility than previously reported. Crystals of SrIrO3 exhibit a paramagnetic behavior that can be remarkably well fitted with a Curie-Weiss law yielding physically reasonable parameters, in contrast to previous reports. Hence, reducing the soak temperature below the solvent boiling point not only provides more stable and controllable growth conditions in contrast to previously reported growth protocols, but also extends considerably the lifetime of expensive platinum crucibles and reduces the corrosion of heating and thermoelements of standard furnaces, thereby reducing growth costs.

Growth, characterization, and magnetic properties of a Li(Mn,Ni)PO4 single crystal

Ni-doped LiMn0.95Ni0.05PO4 single crystals have been grown for the first time by the travelling-solvent floating-zone method at low Argon pressure. The grown sample exhibits large single crystalline grains as revealed by means of polarization microscopy and X-ray Laue back scattering. The composition of the crystal was determined by Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. LiMn0.95Ni0.05PO4 orders in an orthorhombic olivine-like structure as expected and phase purity was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction. An oriented cuboid with size of 2.4 x 2.5 x 2.7 mm3 along a, b, and c crystalline directions, respectively, was used for anisotropic magnetic measurements.

Solitonic lattice and Yukawa forces in the rare earth orthoferrite TbFeO3

The control of domains in ferroic devices lies at the heart of their potential for technological applications. Multiferroic materials offer another level of complexity as domains can be either or both of a ferroelectric and magnetic nature. Here we report the discovery of a novel magnetic state in the orthoferrite TbFeO3 using neutron diffraction under an applied magnetic field. This state has a very long incommensurate period ranging from 340 Angstrom at 3K to 2700 Angstrom at the lowest temperatures and exhibits an anomalously large number of higher-order harmonics, allowing us to identify it with the periodic array of sharp domain walls of Tb spins separated by many lattice constants. The Tb domain walls interact by exchanging spin waves propagating through the Fe magnetic sublattice. The resulting Yukawa-like force, familiar from particle physics, has a finite range that determines the period of the incommensurate state.
