Broadband bright biphotons from periodically poled triple-resonance metasurface

Biphotons from spontaneous parametric down conversion with broad bandwidth are highly wanted in many quantum technologies. However, achieving broad bandwidth in both frequency and momentum while keeping a high rate remains a challenge for both conventional nonlinear crystals and recently emerging nonlinear metasurfaces. Here, we address this challenge by introducing a periodically poled triple-resonance metasurface (PPTM) incorporating a nano-grating atop a periodically poled LiNbO$_3$ thin film. PPTM supports high-Q guided mode resonances at pump, signal, and idler wavelengths meanwhile enabling quasi-phase matching between three guided modes in a broad frequency/momentum range. The predicted biphoton rate is over 100 MHz/mW with a frequency bandwidth of 165 nm around 1550 nm and a momentum bandwidth of $13^\circ \times 6^\circ$, improving the state-of-the-art by over three orders of magnitude in rate and one order of magnitude in bandwidths. This ultrathin broadband bright biphoton source could stimulate system-level miniaturization of various free-space quantum photonic technologies.

Nonlinear quantum spectroscopy with Parity-Time symmetric integrated circuits

We propose a novel quantum nonlinear interferometer design that incorporates a passive PT symmetric coupler sandwiched between two nonlinear sections where signal-idler photon pairs are generated. The PT-symmetry enables efficient coupling of the longer-wavelength idler photons and facilitates the sensing of losses in the second waveguide exposed to analyte under investigation, whose absorption can be inferred by measuring only the signal intensity at a shorter wavelength where efficient detectors are readily available. Remarkably, we identify a new phenomenon of sharp signal intensity fringe shift at critical idler loss values, which is distinct from the previously studied PT-symmetry breaking. We discuss how such unconventional properties arising from quantum interference can provide a route to enhancing the sensing of analytes and facilitate broadband spectroscopy applications in integrated photonic platforms.

Spatially entangled photon-pairs from lithium niobate nonlocal metasurfaces

Metasurfaces consisting of nano-scale structures are underpinning new physical principles for the creation and shaping of quantum states of light. Multi-photon states that are entangled in spatial or angular domains are an essential resource for quantum imaging and sensing applications, however their production traditionally relies on bulky nonlinear crystals. We predict and demonstrate experimentally the generation of spatially entangled photon pairs through spontaneous parametric down-conversion from a metasurface incorporating a nonlinear thin film of lithium niobate. This is achieved through nonlocal resonances with tailored angular dispersion mediated by an integrated silica meta-grating, enabling control of the emission pattern and associated quantum states of photon pairs by designing the grating profile and tuning the pump frequency. We measure the correlations of photon positions and identify their spatial anti-bunching through violation of the classical Cauchy-Schwartz inequality, witnessing the presence of multi-mode entanglement. Simultaneously, the photon-pair rate is strongly enhanced by 450 times as compared to unpatterned films due to high-quality-factor metasurface resonances, and the coincidence to accidental ratio reaches 5000. These results pave the way to miniaturization of various quantum devices by incorporating ultra-thin metasurfaces functioning as room-temperature sources of quantum-entangled photons.

Complete conversion between one and two photons in nonlinear waveguides with tailored dispersion

High-efficiency photon-pair production is a long-sought-after goal for many optical quantum technologies, and coherent photon conversion processes are promising candidates for achieving this. We show theoretically how to control coherent conversion between a narrow-band pump photon and broadband photon pairs in nonlinear optical waveguides by tailoring frequency dispersion for broadband quantum frequency mixing. We reveal that complete deterministic conversion as well as pump-photon revival can be achieved at a finite propagation distance. We also find that high conversion efficiencies can be realised robustly over long propagation distances. These results demonstrate that dispersion engineering is a promising way to tune and optimise the coherent photon conversion process.

Metasurface-Assisted Quantum Ghost Discrimination of Polarization Objects

We develop a concept of metasurface-assisted ghost imaging for non-local discrimination between a set of polarization objects. The specially designed metasurfaces are incorporated in the imaging system to perform parallel state transformations in general elliptical bases of quantum-entangled or classically-correlated photons. Then, only four or fewer correlation measurements between multiple metasurface outputs and a simple polarization-insensitive bucket detector after the object can allow for the identification of fully or partially transparent polarization elements and their arbitrary orientation angles. We rigorously establish that entangled photon states offer a fundamental advantage compared to classical correlations for a broad class of objects. The approach can find applications for real-time and low-light imaging across diverse spectral regions in dynamic environments.

Optical Neural Network Based on Synthetic Nonlinear Photonic Lattices

We reveal that a synthetic photonic lattice based on coupled optical loops can be utilized as a neural network for processing of optical pulse sequences in time domain. As a proof-of-concept, we train the optical system to restore an initial shape of the pulse train from the signal distorted due to linear dispersion in a fiber-optic link. We also show efficient training of the optical network with an intrinsic Kerr-type nonlinearity for the realization of target nonlinear transmission functions and inference functionality for the discrimination of different pulse sequences. The theoretical modeling is performed under practical conditions and can guide future experimental realizations.

Multidimensional synthetic chiral-tube lattices via nonlinear frequency conversion

Geometrical dimensionality plays a fundamentally important role in the topological effects arising in discrete lattices. While direct experiments are limited by three spatial dimensions, the research topic of synthetic dimensions implemented by the frequency degree of freedom in photonics is rapidly advancing. The manipulation of light in such artificial lattices is typically realized through electro-optic modulation, yet their operating bandwidth imposes practical constraints on the range of interactions between different frequency components. Here we propose and experimentally realize all-optical synthetic dimensions involving specially tailored simultaneous short- and long-range interactions between discrete spectral lines mediated by frequency conversion in a nonlinear waveguide. We realize triangular chiral-tube lattices in three-dimensional space and explore their four-dimensional generalization. We implement a synthetic gauge field with nonzero magnetic flux and observe the associated multidimensional dynamics of frequency combs, all within one physical spatial port. We anticipate that our method will provide a new means for the fundamental study of high-dimensional physics and act as an important step towards using topological effects in optical devices operating in the time and frequency domains.

Quantum nonlinear metasurfaces

We review the latest advances in the generation of quantum light with nonlinear nanoresonators in metasurfaces, which act both as sources of quantum states and nanoantennas shaping the emitted photons. We outline a general quantum theory of spontaneous photon-pair generation in arbitrary nonlinear photonic structures, including nanoresonators and metasurfaces, which provides an explicit analytical solution for the photon state expressed through the classical Green function. We formulate the correspondence between the quantum photon-pair generation and classical sum-frequency process in nonlinear media, and discuss its application in various contexts, including waveguide circuits and nanostructures. We also discuss the first experimental results demonstrating photon-pair generation in a single nonlinear nanoantenna.

Spectral mapping of polarization-correlated photon-pair sources using quantum-classical correspondence

Direct spectral characterization of a quantum photon-pair source usually involves cumbersome, costly, and time-consuming detection issues. In this study, we experimentally characterize the spectral properties of a type-II phase-matched spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) source based on a titanium-diffused periodically poled lithium niobate (Ti:PPLN) waveguide. The characterization of the spectral information of the generated cross-polarized photon pairs is of importance for the use of such sources in applications including quantum information and communication. We demonstrate that the joint spectral intensity of the cross-polarized photon-pair source can be fully reconstructed using the quantum-classical correspondence through classical sum-frequency generation (SFG) measurements. This technique, which uses a much less complex detection system for visible light, opens the possibility of fast monitoring and control of the quantum state of (polarization-correlated) photon-pair sources to facilitate the realization of a stable and high-usability quantum source.

Synthetic photonic lattice for single-shot reconstruction of frequency combs

We formulate theoretically and demonstrate experimentally an all-optical method for reconstruction of the amplitude, phase and coherence of frequency combs from a single-shot measurement of the spectral intensity. Our approach exploits synthetic frequency lattices with pump-induced spectral short- and long-range couplings between different signal components across a broad bandwidth of of hundreds GHz in a single nonlinear fiber. When combined with ultra-fast signal conversion techniques, this approach has the potential to provide real-time measurement of pulse-to-pulse variations in the spectral phase and coherence properties of exotic light sources.

Reconfigurable cluster state generation in specially poled nonlinear waveguide arrays

We present a new approach for generating cluster states on-chip, with the state encoded in the spatial component of the photonic wavefunction. We show that for spatial encoding, a change of measurement basis can improve the practicality of cluster state algorithm implementation, and demonstrate this by simulating Grover's search algorithm. Our state generation scheme involves shaping the wavefunction produced by spontaneous parametric down-conversion in on-chip waveguides using specially tailored nonlinear poling patterns. Furthermore the form of the cluster state can be reconfigured quickly by driving different waveguides in the array.

Generation of photon-plasmon quantum states in nonlinear hyperbolic metamaterials

We develop a general theoretical framework of integrated paired photon-plasmon generation through spontaneous wave mixing in nonlinear plasmonic and metamaterial nanostructures, rigorously accounting for material dispersion and losses in quantum regime through the electromagnetic Green function. We identify photon-plasmon correlations in layered metal-dielectric structures with 70% internal heralding quantum efficiency, and reveal novel mechanism of broadband generation enhancement due to topological transition in hyperbolic metamaterials.

Observation of nonlinear thermal optical dynamics in a chalcogenide nanobeam cavity

We present a theoretical and experimental analysis of nonlinear thermo-optic effects in suspended chalcogenide glass nanobeam cavities. We measure the power dependent resonance peaks and characterise the dynamic nonlinear thermo-optic response of the cavity under modulated light input. Several distinct nonlinear characteristics are identified, including a modified spectral response containing periodic fringes, a critical wavelength jump and saturated time delay for modulation frequency faster than the thermal characteristic time. We reveal that the coupling to a parasitic Fabry-Perot cavity enables isolated thermal equilibrium states resulting in the discontinuous thermo-optic critical point.

Slow phonon vortices and defect modes in periodic nano-waveguides

We identify a broad class of phonon modes with persistent vortex fluxes at arbitrarily slow propagating velocities in periodic nano-waveguides. Such phonon vortices are associated with the split band-edges in dispersion dependencies, which can be engineered by waveguide design. Modulations introduced in such waveguides can support a pair of defect cavity phonon modes with an arbitrarily small frequency splitting. These features can find applications for sensing and nano-manipulation.

Lattice topology and spontaneous parametric down-conversion in quadratic nonlinear waveguide arrays

We analyze spontaneous parametric down-conversion in various experimentally feasible 1D quadratic nonlinear waveguide arrays, with emphasis on the relationship between the lattice's topological invariants and the biphoton correlations. Nontrivial topology results in a nontrivial "winding" of the array's Bloch waves, which introduces additional selection rules for the generation of biphotons. These selection rules are in addition to, and independent of existing control using the pump beam's spatial profile and phase matching conditions. In finite lattices, nontrivial topology produces single photon edge modes, resulting in "hybrid" biphoton edge modes, with one photon localized at the edge and the other propagating into the bulk. When the single photon band gap is sufficiently large, these hybrid biphoton modes reside in a band gap of the bulk biphoton Bloch wave spectrum. Numerical simulations support our analytical results.

Nonlinear switching and solitons in PT-symmetric photonic systems

One of the challenges of the modern photonics is to develop all-optical devices enabling increased speed and energy efficiency for transmitting and processing information on an optical chip. It is believed that the recently suggested Parity-Time (PT) symmetric photonic systems with alternating regions of gain and loss can bring novel functionalities. In such systems, losses are as important as gain and, depending on the structural parameters, gain compensates losses. Generally, PT systems demonstrate nontrivial non-conservative wave interactions and phase transitions, which can be employed for signal filtering and switching, opening new prospects for active control of light. In this review, we discuss a broad range of problems involving nonlinear PT-symmetric photonic systems with an intensity-dependent refractive index. Nonlinearity in such PT symmetric systems provides a basis for many effects such as the formation of localized modes, nonlinearly-induced PT-symmetry breaking, and all-optical switching. Nonlinear PT-symmetric systems can serve as powerful building blocks for the development of novel photonic devices targeting an active light control.

Parity-Time Anti-Symmetric Parametric Amplifier

We describe the process of parametric amplification in a directional coupler of quadratically nonlinear and lossy waveguides, which belong to a class of optical systems with spatial parity-time (PT) symmetry in the linear regime. We identify a distinct spectral parity-time anti-symmetry associated with optical parametric interactions, and show that pump-controlled symmetry breaking can facilitate spectrally selective mode amplification in analogy with PT lasers. We also establish a connection between breaking of spectral and spatial mode symmetries, revealing the potential to implement unconventional regimes of spatial light switching through ultrafast control of PT breaking by pump pulses.

Whispering gallery modes in optical fibers based on reflectionless potentials

We consider an optical fiber with nanoscale variation of the effective fiber radius supporting whispering gallery modes slowly propagating along the fiber, and reveal that the radius variation can be designed to support reflectionless propagation of these modes. We show that reflectionless modulations can realize control of transmission amplitude and temporal delay, while enabling close packing due to the absence of cross-talk, in contrast to conventional potentials.

Effect of loss on photon-pair generation in nonlinear waveguides arrays

We describe theoretically the process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion in quadratic nonlinear waveguide arrays in the presence of linear loss. We derive a set of discrete Schrodinger-type equations for the biphoton wave function, and the wave function of one photon when the other photon in a pair is lost. We demonstrate effects arising from loss-affected interference between the generated photon pairs and show that nonlinear waveguide arrays can serve as a robust loss-tolerant integrated platform for the generation of entangled photon states with non-classical spatial correlations.

Generation of photons with all-optically reconfigurable entanglement in integrated nonlinear waveguides

We predict that all-optically reconfigurable generation of photon pairs with tailored spatial entanglement can be realized via spontaneous parametric down-conversion in integrated nonlinear coupled waveguides. The required elements of the output quantum wavefunction are directly mapped from the amplitudes and phases of the classical laser pump inputs in each waveguide. This is achieved through special nonuniform domain poling, which locally inverts the sign of quadratic nonlinear susceptibility and accordingly shapes the interference of biphoton quantum states generated along the waveguides. We demonstrate a device configuration for the generation of any linear combination of two-photon Bell states.

Nonlinear coupled-mode theory for periodic plasmonic waveguides and metamaterials with loss and gain

We derive general coupled-mode equations describing the nonlinear interaction of electromagnetic modes in media with loss and gain. Our approach is rigorously based on the Lorentz reciprocity theorem, and it can be applied to a broad range of metal-dielectric photonic structures, including plasmonic waveguides and metamaterials. We verify that our general results agree with the previous analysis of particular cases, and predict novel effects on self- and cross-phase modulation in multi-layer nonlinear fishnet metamaterials.

Classical Simulation of Squeezed Vacuum in Optical Waveguide Arrays

We reveal that classical light diffraction in arrays of specially modulated coupled optical waveguides can simulate the quantum process of two-mode squeezing in nonlinear media, with the waveguide mode amplitudes corresponding the signal and idler photon numbers. The whole Fock space is mapped by a set of arrays, where each array represents the states with a fixed difference between the signal and idler photon numbers. We demonstrate a critical transition from photon number growth to Bloch oscillations with periodical revivals of an arbitrary input state, associated with an increase of the effective phase mismatch between the pump and the squeezed photons.

Compact surface Fano states embedded in the continuum of waveguide arrays

We describe theoretically and observe experimentally the formation of a surface state in a semi-infnite waveguide array with side-coupled waveguide, designed to simultaneously achieve Fano and Fabry-Perot resonances. We demonstrate that the surface mode is compact, with all energy concentrated in few waveguides at the edge and no field penetration beyond the side-coupled waveguide position. Furthermore, we show that by broadening the spectral band in the rest of the waveguide array it is possible to suppress exponentially localized modes, whereas the Fano state having the eigenvalue embedded in the continuum is preserved.

Bloch-mode analysis for retrieving effective parameters of metamaterials

We introduce a new approach for retrieving effective parameters of metamaterials based on the Bloch-mode analysis of quasi-periodic composite structures. We demonstrate that, in the case of single-mode propagation, a complex effective refractive index can be assigned to the structure, being restored by our method with a high accuracy. We employ both surface and volume averaging of the electromagnetic fields of the dominating (fundamental) Bloch modes to determine the Bloch and wave impedances, respectively. We discuss how this method works for several characteristic examples, and demonstrate that this approach can be useful for retrieval of both material and wave effective parameters of a broad range of metamaterials.

Breathers in PT-symmetric optical couplers

We show that the parity-time (PT) symmetric coupled optical waveguides with gain and loss support localised oscillatory structures similar to the breathers of the classical $ϕ^4$ model. The power carried by the PT-breather oscillates periodically, switching back and forth between the waveguides, so that the gain and loss are compensated on the average. The breathers are found to coexist with solitons and be prevalent in the products of the soliton collisions. We demonstrate that the evolution of the small-amplitude breather's envelope is governed by a system of two coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations, and employ this Hamiltonian system to show that the small-amplitude PT-breathers are stable.

Optical solitons in $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric nonlinear couplers with gain and loss

We study spatial and temporal solitons in the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric coupler with gain in one waveguide and loss in the other. Stability properties of the high- and low-frequency solitons are found to be completely determined by a single combination of the soliton's amplitude and the gain/loss coefficient of the waveguides. The unstable perturbations of the high-frequency soliton break the symmetry between its active and lossy components which results in a blowup of the soliton or a formation of a long-lived breather state. The unstable perturbations of the low-frequency soliton separate its two components in space blocking the power drainage of the active component and cutting the power supply to the lossy one. Eventually this also leads to the blowup or breathing.

Light propagation and localization in modulated photonic lattices and waveguides

We review both theoretical and experimental advances in the recently emerged physics of modulated photonic lattices. Artificial periodic dielectric media, such as photonic crystals and photonic lattices, provide a powerful tool for the control of the fundamental properties of light propagation in photonic structures. Photonic lattices are arrays of coupled optical waveguides, where the light propagation becomes effectively discretized. Such photonic structures allow one to study many useful optical analogies with other fields, such as the physics of solid state and electron theory. In particular, the light propagation in periodic photonic structures resembles the motion of electrons in a crystalline lattice of semiconductor materials. The discretized nature of light propagation gives rise to many new phenomena which are not possible in homogeneous bulk media, such as discrete diffraction and diffraction management, discrete and gap solitons, and discrete surface waves. Recently, it was discovered that applying periodic modulation to a photonic lattice by varying its geometry or refractive index is very much similar to applying a bias to control the motion of electrons in a crystalline lattice. An interplay between periodicity and modulation in photonic lattices opens up unique opportunities for tailoring diffraction and dispersion properties of light as well as controlling nonlinear interactions.

Slow-light enhanced optical forces between longitudinally shifted photonic-crystal nanowire waveguides

We reveal that slow-light enhanced optical forces between side-coupled photonic-crystal nanowire waveguides can be flexibly controlled by introducing a relative longitudinal shift. We predict that close to the photonic band-edge, where the group velocity is reduced, the transverse force can be tuned from repulse to attractive, and the force is suppressed for a particular shift value. Additionally the shift leads to symmetry breaking that can facilitate longitudinal forces acting on the waveguides, in contrast to unshifted structures where such forces vanish.

Spontaneous Parametric Down-Conversion and Quantum Walks in Arrays of Quadratic Nonlinear Waveguides

We analyze the process of simultaneous photon pair generation and quantum walks realized by spontaneous parametric down conversion of a pump beam in a quadratic nonlinear waveguide array. We demonstrate that this flexible platform allows for creating quantum states with different spatial correlations. In particular, we predict that the output photon correlations can be switched from photon bunching to antibunching controlled entirely classically by varying the temperature of the array or the spatial profile of the pump beam.

Light Bullets in Nonlinear Periodically Curved Waveguide Arrays

We predict that stable mobile spatio-temporal solitons can exist in arrays of periodically curved optical waveguides. We find two-dimensional light bullets in one-dimensional arrays with harmonic waveguide bending and three-dimensional bullets in square lattices with helical waveguide bending using variational formalism. Stability of the light bullet solutions is confirmed by the direct numerical simulations which show that the light bullets can freely move across the curved arrays. This mobility property is a distinguishing characteristic compared to previously considered discrete light bullets which were trapped to a specific lattice site. These results suggest new possibilities for flexible spatio-temporal manipulation of optical pulses in photonic lattices.

Nonlinear suppression of time-reversals in PT-symmetric optical couplers

We reveal a generic connection between the effect of time-reversals and nonlinear wave dynamics in systems with parity-time (PT) symmetry, considering a symmetric optical coupler with balanced gain and loss where these effects can be readily observed experimentally. We show that for intensities below a threshold level, the amplitudes oscillate between the waveguides, and the effects of gain and loss are exactly compensated after each period due to {periodic time-reversals}. For intensities above a threshold level, nonlinearity suppresses periodic time-reversals leading to the symmetry breaking and a sharp beam switching to the waveguide with gain. Another nontrivial consequence of linear PT-symmetry is that the threshold intensity remains the same when the input intensities at waveguides with loss and gain are exchanged.

Bloch-mode extraction from near-field data in periodic waveguides

We demonstrate that the spatial profiles of both propagating and evanescent Bloch-modes in a periodic structure can be extracted from a single measurement of electric field at the specified optical wavelength. We develop a systematic extraction procedure by extending the concepts of high-resolution spectral methods previously developed for temporal data series to take into account the symmetry properties of Bloch-modes simultaneously at all spatial locations. We apply our method to a photonic crystal waveguide interface and confirm its robustness in the presence of noise.

Spatial-Spectral Vortex Solitons in Quadratic Lattices

We predict the existence of spatial-spectral vortex solitons in one-dimensional periodic waveguide arrays with quadratic nonlinear response. In such vortices the energy flow forms a closed loop through the simultaneous effects of phase gradients at the fundamental frequency and second-harmonic fields, and the parametric frequency conversion between the spectral components. The linear stability analysis shows that such modes are stable in a broad parameter region.

Optical Bloch oscillations in periodic structures with metamaterials

We predict that optical Bloch oscillations can be observed in layered structures with left-handed metamaterials and zero average refractive index where the layer thickness varies linearly across the structure. We demonstrate a new type of the Bloch oscillations associated with coupled surface waves excited at the interfaces between the layers with left-handed material and conventional dielectric.
