Heat kernel expansion for higher order minimal and nonminimal operators

We build a systematic calculational method for the covariant expansion of the two-point heat kernel $\hat K(τ|x,x')$ for generic minimal and non-minimal differential operators of any order. This is the expansion in powers of dimensional background field objects -- the coefficients of the operator and the corresponding spacetime and vector bundle curvatures, suitable in renormalization and effective field theory applications. For minimal operators whose principal symbol is given by an arbitrary power of the covariant Laplacian $(-\Box)^M$, $M>1$, this result generalizes the well-known Schwinger--DeWitt (or Seeley--Gilkey) expansion to the infinite series of positive and negative fractional powers of the proper time $τ^{1/M}$, weighted by the generalized exponential functions of the dimensionless argument $-σ(x,x')/2τ^{1/M}$ depending on the Synge world function $σ(x,x')$. The coefficients of this series are determined by the chain of auxiliary differential operators acting on the two-point parallel transport tensor, which in their turn follow from the solution of special recursive equations. The derivation of these operators and their recursive equations are based on the covariant Fourier transform in curved spacetime. The series of negative fractional powers of $τ$ vanishes in the coincidence limit $x'=x$, which makes the proposed method consistent with the heat kernel theory of Seeley--Gilkey and generalizes it beyond the heat kernel diagonal in the form of the asymptotic expansion in the domain $σ(x,x')\llτ^{1/M}$, $τ\to 0$.$\nabla^aσ(x,x')\llτ^{1/2M}$, $τ\to 0$.

Preferred basis, decoherence and a quantum state of the Universe

We review a number of issues in foundations of quantum theory and quantum cosmology including, in particular, the problem of the preferred basis in the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics, the relation between this interpretation and the decoherence phenomenon, application of decoherence approach to quantum cosmology, the relation between the many-worlds interpretation and Anthropic Principle along with the notion of quantum-classical duality. We also discuss the concept of fundamentally mixed quantum state of the Universe represented by a special microcanonical density matrix and its dynamical realization in the form of the semiclassically treated path integral over spacetime geometries and quantum matter fields. These issues can be considered as a part of the scientific legacy of H. D. Zeh generously left to us in his two seminal papers published at the beginning of seventies in Foundations of Physics.

CFT driven cosmology and conformal higher spin fields

Conformal higher spin (CHS) field theory, which is a solid part of recent advanced checks of AdS/CFT correspondence, finds applications in cosmology. Hidden sector of weakly interacting CHS fields suggests a resolution of the hierarchy problem in the model of initial conditions for inflationary cosmology driven by a conformal field theory. These initial conditions are set by thermal garland type cosmological instantons in the sub-planckian energy range for the model of CHS fields with a large positive coefficient $β$ of the Gauss-Bonnet term in their total conformal anomaly and a large number of their polarizations $\mathbb{N}$. The upper bound of this range $M_P/\sqrtβ$ is shown to be much lower than the gravitational cutoff $M_P/\sqrt\mathbb{N}$ which is defined by the requirement of smallness of the perturbatively nonrenormalizable graviton loop contributions. In this way we justify the approximation scheme in which the nonrenormalizable graviton sector is subject to effective field theory under this cutoff, whereas the renormalizable sector of multiple CHS fields is treated beyond perturbation theory and dynamically generates the bound on the inflation scale of the CFT cosmology $M_P/\sqrtβ\ll M_P/\sqrt\mathbb{N}$. This confirms recent predictions for the origin of the Starobinsky $R^2$ and Higgs inflation models from the CHS cosmology, which occurs at the energy scale three or four orders of magnitude below the gravitational cutoff, $\sqrt{\mathbb{N}/β}\sim 10^{-3}÷10^{-4}$. We also consider cosmological models dominated by fermionic CHS fields with a negative $β$ and anomaly free models of infinite towers of CHS fields with $β=0$ and briefly discuss the status of unitarity in CHS models.

BRST technique for the cosmological density matrix

The microcanonical density matrix in closed cosmology has a natural definition as a projector on the space of solutions of Wheeler-DeWitt equations, which is motivated by the absence of global non-vanishing charges and energy in spatially closed gravitational systems. Using the BRST/BFV formalism in relativistic phase space of gauge and ghost variables we derive the path integral representation for this projector and the relevant statistical sum. This derivation circumvents the difficulties associated with the open algebra of noncommutative quantum Dirac constraints and the construction/regularization of the physical inner product in the subspace of BRS singlets. This inner product is achieved via the Batalin-Marnelius gauge fixing in the space of BRS-invariant states, which in its turn is shown to be a result of truncation of the BRST/BFV formalism to the "matter" sector of relativistic phase space.

Serendipitous discoveries in nonlocal gravity theory

We present a class of generally covariant nonlocal gravity models which have a flat-space general relativistic (GR) limit and also possess a stable de Sitter (dS) or Anti-de Sitter (AdS) background with an arbitrary value of its cosmological constant. The nonlocal action of the theory is formulated in the Euclidean signature spacetime and is understood as an approximation to the quantum effective action (generating functional of one-particle irreducible diagrams) originating from fundamental quantum gravity theory. Using the known relation between the Schwinger-Keldysh technique for quantum expectation values and the Euclidean quantum field theory we derive from this action the {\em causal} effective equations of motion for mean value of the metric field in the physical Lorentzian-signature spacetime. Thus we show that the (A)dS background of the theory carries as free propagating modes massless gravitons having two polarizations identical to those of the Einstein theory with a cosmological term. The on-shell action of the theory is vanishing both for the flat-space and (A)dS backgrounds which play the role of stable vacua underlying respectively the ultraviolet and infrared phases of the theory. We also obtain linearized gravitational potentials of compact matter sources and show that in the infrared (A)dS phase their effective gravitational coupling $G_{\rm eff}$ can be essentially different from the Newton gravitational constant $G_N$ of the short-distance GR phase. When $G_{\rm eff}\gg G_N$ the (A)dS phase can be regarded as a strongly coupled infrared modification of Einstein theory not only describing the dark energy mechanism of cosmic acceleration but also simulating the dark matter phenomenon by enhanced gravitational attraction at long distances.

Standard Model Higgs inflation: CMB, Higgs mass and quantum cosmology

We consider the inflation model generated by the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson having a strong non-minimal curvature coupling. This model suggests the range of the Higgs mass $135.6\; {\rm GeV} \lesssim M_H\lesssim 184.5\;{\rm GeV}$ entirely determined by the lower WMAP bound on the CMB spectral index. This result is based on the renormalization group analysis of quantum effects which make the SM phenomenology sensitive to the current cosmological data and thus suggest CMB measurements as a SM test complementary to the LHC program. We show naturalness of the gradient and curvature expansion in this model in a conventional perturbation theory range of SM. The origin of initial conditions for inflation within the quantum cosmology concept of the tunneling state of the Universe is also considered. In this way a complete cosmological scenario is obtained, which embraces the formation of initial conditions for the inflationary background in the form of a sharp probability peak in the distribution of the inflaton field and the ongoing generation of the CMB spectrum on this background.

Tunneling cosmological state revisited: Origin of inflation with a non-minimally coupled Standard Model Higgs inflaton

We suggest a path integral formulation for the tunneling cosmological state, which admits a consistent renormalization and renormalization group (RG) improvement in particle physics applications of quantum cosmology. We apply this formulation to the inflationary cosmology driven by the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson playing the role of an inflaton with a strong non-minimal coupling to gravity. In this way a complete cosmological scenario is obtained, which embraces the formation of initial conditions for the inflationary background in the form of a sharp probability peak in the distribution of the inflaton field and the ongoing generation of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) spectrum on this background. Formation of this probability peak is based on the same RG mechanism which underlies the generation of the CMB spectrum which was recently shown to be compatible with the WMAP data in the Higgs mass range $135.6 {\rm GeV} \lesssim M_H\lesssim 184.5 {\rm GeV}$. This brings to life a convincing unification of quantum cosmology with the particle phenomenology of the SM, inflation theory, and CMB observations.
