Geometrized quantum Galileons

We investigate the renormalization structure of the scalar Galileon model in flat spacetime by calculating the one-loop divergences in a closed geometric form. The geometric formulation is based on the definition of an effective Galileon metric and allows to apply known heat-kernel techniques. The result for the one-loop divergences is compactly expressed in terms of curvature invariants of the effective Galileon metric and corresponds to a resummation of the divergent one-loop contributions of all n-point functions. The divergent part of the one-loop effective action therefore serves as generating functional for arbitrary n-point counterterms. We discuss our result within the Galileon effective field theory and give a brief outlook on extensions to more general Galileon models in curved spacetime.

Naked singularities in quadratic f(R) gravity

We find new static, spherically symmetric, and asymptotically flat vacuum solutions without horizon in Starobinsky's quadratic f(R) gravity. We systematically classify these solutions by an asymptotic analysis around the origin and find seven different integer Frobenius families. We numerically solve the exact equations of motion by a double-shooting method and specify boundary conditions by matching the numerical solution to the analytic solution of the linearised field equations in the weak field regime. We find that all integer Frobenius families can be connected to asymptotically flat solutions and trace out lines in the parameter space, allowing to ultimately relate all free parameters to the total mass at infinity.

One-loop renormalization in Galileon effective field theory

We investigate the renormalization structure of scalar Galileons in flat spacetime. We explicitly calculate the ultraviolet divergent one-loop contributions to the 2-point, 3-point, 4-point, and 5-point functions. We discuss the structure of the counterterms and their hierarchy within an effective field theory expansion. We comment on different resummation schemes, including a geometric resummation for which our results could be generalized to arbitrary n-point functions.

Quantum gravitational corrections to the inflationary power spectra in scalar-tensor theories

We derive the first quantum gravitational corrections to the inflationary power spectra for a general single-field scalar-tensor theory which includes a non-minimal coupling to gravity, a non-standard scalar kinetic term and an arbitrary potential of the scalar field. We obtain these corrections from a semiclassical expansion of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation, which, in turn, governs the full quantum dynamics in the canonical approach to quantum gravity. We discuss the magnitude and relevance of these corrections, as well as their characteristic signature in the inflationary spectral observables. We compare our results to similar calculations performed for a minimally coupled scalar field with a canonical kinetic term and discuss the impact of the non-minimal coupling on the quantum gravitational corrections.

Question of quantum equivalence between Jordan frame and Einstein frame

In the framework of a general scalar-tensor theory, we investigate the equivalence between two different parametrizations of fields that are commonly used in cosmology - the so-called Jordan frame and Einstein frame. While it is clear that both parametrizations are mathematically equivalent at the level of the classical action, the question about their mathematical equivalence at the quantum level as well as their physical equivalence is still a matter of debate in cosmology. We analyze whether the mathematical equivalence still holds when the first quantum corrections are taken into account. We explicitly calculate the one-loop divergences in both parametrizations by using the generalized Schwinger-DeWitt algorithm and compare both results. We find that the quantum corrections do not coincide off shell and hence induce an off shell dependence on the parametrization. According to the equivalence theorem, the one-loop divergences should however coincide on shell. For a cosmological background, we show explicitly that the on shell equivalence is indeed realized by a nontrivial cancellation.

What can quantum cosmology say about the inflationary universe?

We propose a method to extract predictions from quantum cosmology for inflation that can be confronted with observations. Employing the tunneling boundary condition in quantum geometrodynamics, we derive a probability distribution for the inflaton field. A sharp peak in this distribution can be interpreted as setting the initial conditions for the subsequent phase of inflation. In this way, the peak sets the energy scale at which the inflationary phase has started. This energy scale must be consistent with the energy scale found from the inflationary potential and with the scale found from a potential observation of primordial gravitational waves. Demanding a consistent history of the universe from its quantum origin to its present state, which includes decoherence, we derive a condition that allows one to constrain the parameter space of the underlying model of inflation. We demonstrate our method by applying it to two models: Higgs inflation and natural inflation.

Quantum cosmological consistency condition for inflation

We investigate the quantum cosmological tunneling scenario for inflationary models. Within a path-integral approach, we derive the corresponding tunneling probability distribution. A sharp peak in this distribution can be interpreted as the initial condition for inflation and therefore as a quantum cosmological prediction for its energy scale. This energy scale is also a genuine prediction of any inflationary model by itself, as the primordial gravitons generated during inflation leave their imprint in the B-polarization of the cosmic microwave background. In this way, one can derive a consistency condition for inflationary models that guarantees compatibility with a tunneling origin and can lead to a testable quantum cosmological prediction. The general method is demonstrated explicitly for the model of natural inflation.

Non-minimal Higgs Inflation and Frame Dependence in Cosmology

We investigate a very general class of cosmological models with scalar fields non-minimally coupled to gravity. A particular representative in this class is given by the non-minimal Higgs inflation model in which the Standard Model Higgs boson and the inflaton are described by one and the same scalar particle. While the predictions of the non-minimal Higgs inflation scenario come numerically remarkably close to the recently discovered mass of the Higgs boson, there remains a conceptual problem in this model that is associated with the choice of the cosmological frame. While the classical theory is independent of this choice, we find by an explicit calculation that already the first quantum corrections induce a frame dependence. We give a geometrical explanation of this frame dependence by embedding it into a more general field theoretical context. From this analysis, some conceptional points in the long lasting cosmological debate: "Jordan frame vs. Einstein frame" become more transparent and in principle can be resolved in a natural way.

Pure connection gravity at one loop: Instanton background

In the "pure connection" formulation General Relativity becomes a particular diffeomorphism invariant SL(2) gauge theory. Using this formalism, we compute the divergent contributions to the gravitational one-loop effective action. Calculations of the on-shell effective action simplify greatly if one specialises to an instanton background where only the anti-self-dual part of the Weyl curvature is non-vanishing. One of the most striking features of the connection formulation is that the (linearised) Euclidean action has a definite sign, unlike in the metric case. As in the metric GR, we find the logarithmically divergent contribution to consist of the volume and Euler character terms, but the arising numerical constants are different. However, the difference between the two results turns out to be always an integer. We explain this by noting that at one loop the connection and metric based quantum theories are closely related, the only difference being in a finite number of scalar modes.

Tunneling cosmological state revisited: Origin of inflation with a non-minimally coupled Standard Model Higgs inflaton

We suggest a path integral formulation for the tunneling cosmological state, which admits a consistent renormalization and renormalization group (RG) improvement in particle physics applications of quantum cosmology. We apply this formulation to the inflationary cosmology driven by the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson playing the role of an inflaton with a strong non-minimal coupling to gravity. In this way a complete cosmological scenario is obtained, which embraces the formation of initial conditions for the inflationary background in the form of a sharp probability peak in the distribution of the inflaton field and the ongoing generation of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) spectrum on this background. Formation of this probability peak is based on the same RG mechanism which underlies the generation of the CMB spectrum which was recently shown to be compatible with the WMAP data in the Higgs mass range $135.6 {\rm GeV} \lesssim M_H\lesssim 184.5 {\rm GeV}$. This brings to life a convincing unification of quantum cosmology with the particle phenomenology of the SM, inflation theory, and CMB observations.
