Edge-plasmon assisted electro-optical modulator

An efficient electro-optical modulation has been demonstrated here by using an edge plasmon mode specific for the hybrid plasmonic waveguide. Our approach addresses a major obstacle of the integrated microwave photonics caused by the polarization constraints of both active and passive components. In addition to sub-wavelength confinement, typical for surface plasmon polaritons, the edge plasmon modes enable exact matching of the polarization requirements for silicon based input/output grating couplers, waveguides and electro-optical modulators. A concept of the hybrid waveguide, implemented in a sandwich-like structure, implies a coupling of propagating plasmon modes with a waveguide mode. The vertically arranged sandwich includes a thin layer of epsilon-near-zero material (indium tin oxide) providing an efficient modulation at small length scales. Employed edge plasmons possess a mixed polarization state and can be excited with horizontally polarized waveguide modes. It allows the resulting modulator to work directly with efficient grating couplers and avoid using bulky and lossy polarization converters. A 3D optical model based on Maxwell equations combined with drift-diffusion semiconductor equations is developed. Numerically heavy computations involving the optimization of materials and geometry have been performed. Effective modes, stationary state field distribution, an extinction coefficient, optical losses and charge transport properties are computed and analyzed. In addition to the polarization matching, the advantages of the proposed model include the compact planar geometry of the silicon waveguide, reduced active electric resistance R and a relatively simple design, attractive for experimental realization.

Optical Pulse Dynamics in Active Metamaterials with Positive and Negative Refractive Index

We study numerically the propagation of two-color light pulses through a metamaterial doped with active atoms such that the carrier frequencies of the pulses are in resonance with two atomic transitions in the $Λ$ configuration and that one color propagates in the regime of positive refraction and the other in the regime of negative refraction. In such a metamaterial, one resonant color of light propagates with positive and the other with negative group velocity. We investigate nonlinear interaction of these forward- and backward-propagating waves, and find self-trapped waves, counter-propagating radiation waves, and hot spots of medium excitation.

Nonlinear response of a thin metamaterial film containing Josephson junctions

An interaction of electromagnetic field with metamaterial thin film containing split-ring resonators with Josephson junctions is considered. It is shown that dynamical self-inductance in a split rings results in reduction of magnetic flux through a ring and this reduction is proportional to a time derivative of split ring magnetization. Evolution of thin film magnetization taking into account dynamical self-inductance is studied. New mechanism for excitation of waves in one dimensional array of split-ring resonators with Josephson junctions is proposed. Nonlinear magnetic susceptibility of such thin films is obtained in the weak amplitude approximation.

Solitary electromagnetic waves propagation in the asymmetric oppositely-directed coupler

We consider the electromagnetic waves propagating in the system of coupled waveguides. One of the system components is a standard waveguide fabricated from nonlinear medium having positive refraction and another component is a waveguide produced from an artificial material having negative refraction. The metamaterial constituting the second waveguide has linear characteristics and a wave propagating in the waveguide of this type propagates in the direction opposite to direction of energy flux. It is found that the coupled nonlinear solitary waves propagating both in the same direction are exist in this oppositely-directed coupler due to linear coupling between nonlinear positive refractive waveguide and linear negative refractive waveguide. The corresponding analytical solution is found and it is used for numerical simulation to illustrate that the results of the solitary wave collisions are sensible to the relative velocity of the colliding solitary waves.
