Redundancy Channels in the Conformal Bootstrap

A method for obstructing symmetry enhancement in numerical conformal bootstrap calculations is proposed. Symmetry enhancement refers to situations where bootstrap studies initialised with a certain symmetry end up allowing theories with higher symmetry. In such cases, it is shown that redundant operators in the less symmetric theory can descend from primary scaling operators of the more symmetric one, motivating the imposition of spectral gaps that are justified in the former but not the latter. The same mechanism can also be used to differentiate between decoupled and fully coupled theories which otherwise have the same global symmetry. A systematic understanding of this mechanism is developed and applied to distinguish the cubic from the $O(3)$ model in three dimensions, where a strip of disallowed parameter space, referred to as the cubic redundancy channel, emerges once a gap associated with a redundant operator of the cubic theory is imposed. The channel corresponds precisely to the region of parameter space where the assumed cubic symmetry would be enhanced to $O(3)$.

Bootstrapping Mixed MN Correlators in 3D

The recent emergence of the modern conformal bootstrap method for the study of conformal field theories (CFTs) has enabled the revisiting of old problems in classical critical phenomena described by three-dimensional CFTs. The study of such CFTs with $O(m)^n \rtimes S_n$ global symmetry, also known as MN models, is pursued in this work. Systems of mixed correlators involving scalar operators in two different representations of the global symmetry group are considered. Isolated allowed regions are found in parameter space for various values of $m$ and $n$. These "islands" can be separated into two qualitative groups: those close to the unitarity bound and those further away. As a by-product of our analysis generic tensor structures required to bootstrap any $G^n \rtimes S_n$ theory with $G$ arbitrary are worked out.

Scale and Conformal Invariance in Higher Derivative Shift Symmetric Theories

The critical behavior of infinite families of shift symmetric interacting theories with higher derivative kinetic terms (non unitary) is considered. Single scalar theories with shift symmetry are classified according to their upper critical dimensions and studied at the leading non trivial order in perturbation theory. For two infinite families, one with quartic and one with cubic interactions, beta functions, criticality conditions and universal anomalous dimensions are computed. At the order considered, the cubic theories enjoy a one loop non renormalization of the vertex, so that the beta function depends non trivially only on the anomalous dimension. The trace of the energy momentum tensor is also investigated and it is shown that these two families of QFTs are conformally invariant at the fixed point of the RG flow.

Weyl Covariance and the Energy Momentum Tensors of Higher-Derivative Free Conformal Field Theories

Energy momentum tensors of higher-derivative free scalar conformal field theories in flat spacetime are discussed. Two algorithms for the computation of energy momentum tensors are described, which accomplish different goals: the first is brute-force and highlights the complexity of the energy momentum tensors, while the second displays some features of their geometric origin as variations of Weyl invariant curved-space actions. New compact expressions for energy momentum tensors are given and specific obstructions to defining them as conformal primary operators in some spacetime dimensions are highlighted. Our discussion is also extended to higher-derivative free spinor theories, which are based on higher-derivative generalizations of the Dirac action and provide interesting examples of conformal field theories in dimension higher than two.

Bootstrapping Mixed Correlators in Three-Dimensional Cubic Theories II

Conformal field theories (CFTs) with cubic global symmetry in 3D are relevant in a variety of condensed matter systems and have been studied extensively with the use of perturbative methods like the $\varepsilon$ expansion. In an earlier work, we used the nonperturbative numerical conformal bootstrap to provide evidence for the existence of a previously unknown 3D CFT with cubic symmetry, dubbed "Platonic CFT". In this work, we make further use of the numerical conformal bootstrap to perform a three-dimensional scan in the space of scaling dimensions of three low-lying operators. We find a three-dimensional isolated allowed region in parameter space, which includes both the 3D (decoupled) Ising model and the Platonic CFT. The essential assumptions on the spectrum of operators used to provide the isolated allowed region include the existence of a stress-energy tensor and the irrelevance of certain operators (in the renormalization group sense).

Bounds on Triangle Anomalies in (3+1)d

How many charged degrees of freedom are necessary to accommodate a certain amount of 't Hooft anomaly? Using the conformal bootstrap for the four-point function of flavor current multiplets, we show that in all (3+1)d superconformal field theories the 't Hooft anomaly of a continuous flavor symmetry is bounded from above by the 3/2 power of the current two-point function coefficient, which can be thought of as a measure for the amount of charged degrees of freedom. We check our bounds against free fields and SQCD in the conformal window.

Implications of ANEC for SCFTs in four dimensions

We explore consequences of the Averaged Null Energy Condition (ANEC) for scaling dimensions $Δ$ of operators in four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconformal field theories. We show that in many cases the ANEC bounds are stronger than the corresponding unitarity bounds on $Δ$. We analyze in detail chiral operators in the $(\frac12 j,0)$ Lorentz representation and prove that the ANEC implies the lower bound $Δ\ge\frac32j$, which is stronger than the corresponding unitarity bound for $j>1$. We also derive ANEC bounds on $(\frac12 j,0)$ operators obeying other possible shortening conditions, as well as general $(\frac12 j,0)$ operators not obeying any shortening condition. In both cases we find that they are typically stronger than the corresponding unitarity bounds. Finally, we elucidate operator-dimension constraints that follow from our $\mathcal{N}=1$ results for multiplets of $\mathcal{N}=2,4$ superconformal theories in four dimensions. By recasting the ANEC as a convex optimization problem and using standard semidefinite programming methods we are able to improve on previous analyses in the literature pertaining to the nonsupersymmetric case.

$C_T$ for Non-unitary CFTs in Higher Dimensions

The coefficient $C_T$ of the conformal energy-momentum tensor two-point function is determined for the non-unitary scalar CFTs with four- and six-derivative kinetic terms. The results match those expected from large-$N$ calculations for the CFTs arising from the $O(N)$ non-linear sigma and Gross-Neveu models in specific even dimensions. $C_T$ is also calculated for the CFT arising from $(n-1)$-form gauge fields with derivatives in $2n+2$ dimensions. Results for $(n-1)$-form theory extended to general dimensions as a non-gauge-invariant CFT are also obtained; the resulting $C_T$ differs from that for the gauge-invariant theory. The construction of conformal primaries by subtracting descendants of lower-dimension primaries is also discussed. For free theories this also leads to an alternative construction of the energy-momentum tensor, which can be quite involved for higher-derivative theories.

Constraints on Perturbative RG Flows in Six Dimensions

When conformal field theories (CFTs) are perturbed by marginally relevant deformations, renormalization group (RG) flows ensue that can be studied with perturbative methods, at least as long as they remain close to the original CFT. In this work we study such RG flows in the vicinity of six-dimensional unitary CFTs. Neglecting effects of scalar operators of dimension two and four, we use Weyl consistency conditions to prove the $a$-theorem in perturbation theory, and establish that scale implies conformal invariance. We identify a quantity that monotonically decreases in the flow to the infrared due to unitarity, showing that it does not agree with the one studied recently in the literature on the six-dimensional $ϕ^3$ theory.

Two-loop renormalization of multiflavor $ϕ^3$ theory in six dimensions and the trace anomaly

We use the background-field method and the heat kernel to obtain all counterterms to two-loop order of conformally-coupled multiflavor $ϕ^3$ theory in six spacetime dimensions, defined in curved spacetime and with spacetime-dependent couplings. We also include spacetime-dependent mass terms for completeness. We use these results to write a general expression for the trace anomaly. With the use of Weyl consistency conditions we are able to show that the strong $a$-theorem for a certain natural candidate quantity $\tilde{a}$ is violated in this theory, and obtain a three-loop expression for the coefficient $a$ of the Euler term in the anomaly.

A challenge to the $a$-theorem in six dimensions

The possibility of a strong $a$-theorem in six dimensions is examined in multi-flavor $ϕ^3$ theory. Contrary to the case in two and four dimensions, we find that in perturbation theory the relevant quantity $\tilde{a}$ increases monotonically along flows away from the trivial fixed point. $\tilde{a}$ is a natural extension of the coefficient $a$ of the Euler term in the trace anomaly, and it arises in any even spacetime dimension from an analysis based on Weyl consistency conditions. We also obtain the anomalous dimensions and beta functions of multi-flavor $ϕ^3$ theory to two loops. Our results suggest that some new intuition about the $a$-theorem is in order.

Exploring the Minimal 4D $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFT

We study the conformal bootstrap constraints for 4D $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconformal field theories containing a chiral operator $ϕ$ and the chiral ring relation $ϕ^2=0$. Hints for a minimal interacting SCFT in this class have appeared in previous numerical bootstrap studies. We perform a detailed study of the properties of this conjectured theory, establishing that the corresponding solution to the bootstrap constraints contains a $\text{U}(1)_R$ current multiplet and estimating the central charge and low-lying operator spectrum of this theory.

Holographic Trace Anomaly and Local Renormalization Group

The Hamilton-Jacobi method in holography has produced important results both at a renormalization group (RG) fixed point and away from it. In this paper we use the Hamilton-Jacobi method to compute the holographic trace anomaly for four- and six-dimensional boundary conformal field theories (CFTs), assuming higher-derivative gravity and interactions of scalar fields in the bulk. The scalar field contributions to the anomaly appear in CFTs with exactly marginal operators. Moving away from the fixed point, we show that the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism provides a deep connection between the holographic and the local RG. We derive the local RG equation holographically, and verify explicitly that it satisfies Weyl consistency conditions stemming from the commutativity of Weyl scalings. We also consider massive scalar fields in the bulk corresponding to boundary relevant operators, and comment on their effects to the local RG equation.

Limit Cycles and Conformal Invariance

There is a widely held belief that conformal field theories (CFTs) require zero beta functions. Nevertheless, the work of Jack and Osborn implies that the beta functions are not actually the quantites that decide conformality, but until recently no such behavior had been exhibited. Our recent work has led to the discovery of CFTs with nonzero beta functions, more precisely CFTs that live on recurrent trajectories, e.g., limit cycles, of the beta-function vector field. To demonstrate this we study the S function of Jack and Osborn. We use Weyl consistency conditions to show that it vanishes at fixed points and agrees with the generator Q of limit cycles on them. Moreover, we compute S to third order in perturbation theory, and explicitly verify that it agrees with our previous determinations of Q. A byproduct of our analysis is that, in perturbation theory, unitarity and scale invariance imply conformal invariance in four-dimensional quantum field theories. Finally, we study some properties of these new, "cyclic" CFTs, and point out that the a-theorem still governs the asymptotic behavior of renormalization-group flows.

Scale without Conformal Invariance at Three Loops

We carry out a three-loop computation that establishes the existence of scale without conformal invariance in dimensional regularization with the MS scheme in d=4-epsilon spacetime dimensions. We also comment on the effects of scheme changes in theories with many couplings, as well as in theories that live on non-conformal scale-invariant renormalization group trajectories. Stability properties of such trajectories are analyzed, revealing both attractive and repulsive directions in a specific example. We explain how our results are in accord with those of Jack & Osborn on a c-theorem in d=4 (and d=4-epsilon) dimensions. Finally, we point out that limit cycles with turning points are unlike limit cycles with continuous scale invariance.

Scale without Conformal Invariance: An Example

We give an explicit example of a model in D=4-epsilon space-time dimensions that is scale but not conformally invariant, is unitary, and has finite correlators. The invariance is associated with a limit cycle renormalization group (RG) trajectory. We also prove, to second order in the loop expansion, in D=4-epsilon, that scale implies conformal invariance for models of any number of real scalars. For models with one real scalar and any number of Weyl spinors we show that scale implies conformal invariance to all orders in perturbation theory.

preprint2015arXiv

Scale without Conformal Invariance: Theoretical Foundations

We present the theoretical underpinnings of scale without conformal invariance in quantum field theory. In light of our results the gradient-flow interpretation of renormalization-group (RG) flow is challenged, due to deep connections between scale-invariant theories and recurrent behaviors in the RG. We show that, on scale-invariant trajectories, there is a redefinition of the dilatation current that leads to generators of dilatations that generate dilatations. Finally, we develop a systematic algorithm for the search of scale-invariant trajectories in perturbation theory.

Symplectic critical models in $6+ε$ dimensions

We consider nontrivial critical models in $d=6+ε$ spacetime dimensions with anticommuting scalars transforming under the symplectic group $\text{Sp}(N)$. These models are nonunitary, but the couplings are real and all operator dimensions are positive. At large $N$ we can take $ε\to1$ consistently with the loop expansion and thus provide evidence that these theories may be used to define critical models in $d=7$. The relation of these theories to critical $\text{Sp}(N)$ theories, defined similarly to the well-known critical $\text{O}(N)$ theories, is examined, and some similarities are pointed out.

Consequences of Weyl Consistency Conditions

The running of quantum field theories can be studied in detail with the use of a local renormalization group equation. The usual beta-function effects are easy to include, but by introducing spacetime-dependence of the various parameters of the theory one can efficiently incorporate renormalization effects of composite operators as well. An illustration of the power of these methods was presented by Osborn in the early 90s, who used consistency conditions following from the Abelian nature of the Weyl group to rederive Zamolodchikov's c-theorem in d=2 spacetime dimensions, and also to obtain a perturbative a-theorem in d=4. In this work we present an extension of Osborn's work to d=6 and to general even d. We compute the full set of Weyl consistency conditions, and we discover among them a candidate for an a-theorem in d=6, similar to the d=2,4 cases studied by Osborn. Additionally, we show that in any even spacetime dimension one finds a consistency condition that may serve as a generalization of the c-theorem, and that the associated candidate c-function involves the coefficient of the Euler term in the trace anomaly. Such a generalization hinges on proving the positivity of a certain "metric" in the space of couplings.

Current OPEs in Superconformal Theories

It's well known that in conformal theories the two- and three-point functions of a subset of the local operators-the conformal primaries-suffice, via the operator product expansion (OPE), to determine all local correlation functions of operators. It's less well known that, in superconformal theories, the OPE of superdescendants is generally undetermined from those of the superprimaries, and there is no universal notion of superconformal blocks. We recall these and related aspects of 4d (S)CFTs, and then we focus on the super operator product expansion (sOPE) of conserved currents in 4d N=1 SCFTs. The current-current OPE J(x)J(0) has applications to general gauge mediation. We show how superconformal symmetry, when combined with current conservation, determines the OPE coefficients of superconformal descendants in terms of those of the superconformal primaries. We show that only integer-spin real superconformal primary operators of vanishing R-charge, and their descendants, appear in the sOPE. We also discuss superconformal blocks for four-point functions of the conserved currents.

Field-theoretic Methods in Strongly-Coupled Models of General Gauge Mediation

An often-exploited feature of the operator product expansion (OPE) is that it incorporates a splitting of ultraviolet and infrared physics. In this paper we use this feature of the OPE to perform simple, approximate computations of soft masses in gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking. The approximation amounts to truncating the OPEs for hidden-sector current-current operator products. Our method yields visible-sector superpartner spectra in terms of vacuum expectation values of a few hidden-sector IR elementary fields. We manage to obtain reasonable approximations to soft masses, even when the hidden sector is strongly coupled. We demonstrate our techniques in several examples, including a new framework where supersymmetry-breaking arises both from a hidden sector and dynamically.

On Limit Cycles in Supersymmetric Theories

Contrary to popular belief conformality does not require zero beta functions. This follows from the work of Jack and Osborn, and examples in non-supersymmetric theories were recently found by some of us. In this note we show that such examples are absent in unitary N=1 supersymmetric four-dimensional field theories. More specifically, we show to all orders in perturbation theory that the beta-function vector field of such theories does not admit limit cycles. A corollary of our result is that unitary N=1 supersymmetric four-dimensional theories cannot be superscale-invariant without being superconformal.

Cyclic unparticle physics

We explore phenomenological consequences of coupling a non-conformal scale-invariant theory to the standard model. We point out that, under certain circumstances, non-conformal scale-invariant theories have oscillating correlation functions which can dramatically modify standard model processes. We dub this scenario cyclic unparticle physics, or simply cyclunparticle physics. We compute phase spaces and amplitudes associated with final state cyclunparticle and cyclunparticle exchange, respectively. We show detailed formulae in a simple example.

Superconformally Covariant OPE and General Gauge Mediation

We consider using broken superconformal symmetry and the super operator product expansion (sOPE) to constrain and analyze hidden sector theories that couple to our gauge forces and are not necessarily weakly coupled. Conformal and supersymmetry breaking are IR effects, associated with field or spurion expectation values, whereas the sOPE is determined in the UV and hence does not notice the breaking. The broken superconformal symmetry relates OPE coefficients of superconformal descendant operators to those of the superconformal primaries. We apply these ideas to the current correlators of general gauge mediation (GGM). We also consider analyticity properties of these correlators, e.g. their discontinuities, and use the optical theorem to relate them to total scattering cross sections from visible to hidden sector states, e.g. sigma(vis + vis --> hidden), analogous to sigma(e+ e- --> hadrons) in QCD. We discuss how the current-current OPE can be truncated to the first few terms to get a good approximation to the visible sector soft masses of GGM.
