Torsion of rational elliptic curves over different types of cubic fields

Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over $\Q$, and let $G$ be the torsion group $E(K)_{tors}$ for some cubic field $K$ which does not occur over $\Q$. In this paper, we determine over which types of cubic number fields (cyclic cubic, non-Galois totally real cubic, complex cubic or pure cubic) $G$ can occur, and if so, whether it can occur infinitely often or not. Moreover, if it occurs, we provide elliptic curves $E/\Q$ together with cubic fields $K$ so that $G= E(K)_{tors}$.

Genuine non-congruence subgroups of Drinfeld modular groups

Let $A$ be the ring of elements in an algebraic function field $K$ over a finite field $F_q$ which are integral outside a fixed place $\infty$. In an earlier paper we have shown that the Drinfeld modular group $G=GL_2(A)$ has automorphisms which map congruence subgroups to non-congruence subgroups. Here we prove the existence of (uncountably many) normal genuine non-congruence subgroups, defined to be those which remain non-congruence under the action of every automorphism of $G$. In addition, for all but finitely many cases we evaluate $ngncs(G)$, the smallest index of a normal genuine non-congruence subgroup of $G$, and compare it to the minimal index of an arbitrary normal non-congruence subgroup.

On the exponent of the automorphism group of a compact Riemann surface

Let $X$ be a compact Riemann surface of genus $g\geq 2$, and let $Aut(X)$ be its group of automorphims. We show that the exponent of $Aut(X)$ is bounded by $42(g-1)$. We also determine explicitly the infinitely many values of $g$ for which this bound is reached and the corresponding groups. Finally we discuss related questions for subgroups $G$ of $Aut(X)$ that are subject to additional conditions, for example being solvable.

Entire functions sharing simple $a$-points with their first derivative

We show that if a complex entire function $f$ and its derivative $f'$ share their simple zeroes and their simple $a$-points for some nonzero constant $a$, then $f\equiv f'$. We also discuss how far these conditions can be relaxed or generalized. Finally, we determine all entire functions $f$ such that for 3 distinct complex numbers $a_1,a_2,a_3$ every simple $a_j$-point of $f$ is an $a_j$-point of $f'$.

The stabilizers in a Drinfeld modular group of the vertices of its Bruhat-Tits tree: an elementary approach

Let $K$ be an algebraic function field of one variable with constant field $k$ and let $C$ be the Dedekind domain consisting of all those elements of $K$ which are integral outside a fixed place $\infty$ of $K$. When $k$ is finite the group $GL_2(C)$ plays a central role in the theory of Drinfeld modular curves analagous to that played by $SL_2(Z)$ in the classical theory of modular forms. When $k$ is finite (resp. infinite) we refer to a group $GL_2(C)$ as an arithmetic (resp. non-arithmetic) Drinfeld modular group. Associated with $GL_2(C)$ is its Bruhat-Tits tree, $T$. The structure of the group is derived from that of the quotient graph $GL_2(C)\backslash T$. Using an elementary approach which refers explicitly to matrices we determine the structure of all the vertex stabilizers of $T$. This extends results of Serre, Takahashi and the authors. We also determine all possible valencies of the vertices of $GL_2(C)\backslash T$ for the important special case where $\infty$ has degree 1.

On the uniqueness of elliptic K3 surfaces with maximal singular fibre

We explicitly determine the elliptic K3 surfaces with a maximal singular fibre. If the characteristic of the ground field is different from 2, for each of the two possible maximal fibre types, $I_{19}$ and $I^*_{14}$, the surface is unique. In characteristic 2 the maximal fibre types are $I_{18}$ and $I^*_{13}$, and there exist two (resp. one) one-parameter families of such surfaces.
