Vibrational and structural properties of the $R$Fe$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ ($R=$Na, K, Ca, Sr, Ba) filled skutterudites

Vibrational and elastic properties of the $R$Fe$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ skutterudites are investigated by, respectively, temperature $(T)$ dependent extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and pressure $(P)$ dependent x-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments. The Fe $K$-edge EXAFS experiments of the $R=$ K, Ca and Ba materials were performed in the $T$-interval $6<T<300$ K and XRD experiments of the $R=$ Na, K, Ca, Sr and Ba materials were performed in the $P$-interval $1\text{ atm }<P<16$ GPa. From EXAFS, we obtained the correlated Debye-Waller parameters that were thus analyzed to extract effective spring constants connected with the Fe-$Y$ (where $Y=$ either $R$, Fe or Sb) scattering paths. Our findings suggest that in the case of the light cations, $R=$ K or Ca, the $R$ atoms are relatively weakly coupled to the cage, in a scenario reminiscent to the Einstein oscillators. From the XRD experiments, we obtained the bulk modulus $B_{0}$ for all $R=$Na, K, Ca, Sr and Ba materials, with values ranging from $77$ GPa ($R=$ K) to $R=99$ GPa ($R=$ Ba) as well as the compressibility $β$ as a function of $P$. The trend in $β$ as a function of the $R$ filler is discussed and it is shown that it does not correlate with simple geometrical considerations but rather with the filler-cage bonding properties.

Crystal structure, Chemical Bonding, Electrical and Thermal Transport in Sc5Rh6Sn18

Single crystals of Sc5Rh6Sn18 were grown from Sn-flux. The crystal structure (SG: I41/acd, a = 13.5529(2) Å, c = 27.0976(7) Å) was studied by high-resolution X-ray diffraction on powder and single crystal material as well as by TEM. All methods confirm it to crystallize with Sc5Ir6Sn18 (space group I41/acd) type of structure. The performed structural studies suggest also the presence of local domains with broken average translational symmetry. Analysis of the chemical bonding situation reveal highly polar Sc2-Sn1, Sn-Rh and Sc2-Rh bonds, two- and three-center bonds involving Sn-atoms as well as ionic nature of Sc1 bonding. The thermopower of Sc5Rh6Sn18 is isotropic, small and negative (i.e. dominance of electron-like charge carriers). Due to structural disorder, the thermal conductivity is lowered in comparison with regular metallic systems.

Multiple-gap response of type-I noncentrosymmetric BeAu superconductor

Precise measurements of the thermodynamic critical field ($B_{\rm c}$) in type-I noncentrosymmetric superconductor BeAu were performed by means of the muon-spin rotation/relaxation technique. The temperature evolution of $B_{\rm c}$ can not be described within the single gap scenario and it requires the presence of at least two different types of the superconducting order parameters. The self-consistent two-gap approach, adapted for analysis of $B_{\rm c}(T)$ behavior, suggests the presence of two superconducing energy gaps with the gap to $T_{\rm c}$ ratios $2Δ/k_{\rm B}T_{\rm c}\simeq4.52$ and $\simeq2.37$ for the big and the small gap, respectively. This implies that the superconductivity in BeAu is unconventional and that the supercarrier pairing occurs at various energy bands.

The single- vs. two-gap scenario: the specific heat and the thermodynamic critical field of BeAu superconductor

The puzzling situation where some thermodynamic quantities require a single-gap description, while others need a more complex gap scenario, is discussed. Our approach reveals that in some cases, the conclusions based on measurements of only one thermodynamic quantity may lead to conflicting results. As an example, temperature evolutions of the electronic specific heat [$C_{\rm e}(T)$] and the thermodynamic critical field [$B_{\rm c}(T)$] of BeAu superconductor were reconsidered within the framework of the single-gap and the two-gap scenarios. The analysis shows that the single-gap approach describes the temperature dependencies of $C_{\rm e}(T)$ and the superfluid density $ρ_{\rm s}(T)$ satisfactorily. However it fails in the case of $B_{\rm c}(T)$. The self-consistent two-gap model, in contrast, is able to describe all of the mentioned thermodynamic quantities by using a similar set of parameters. Our results reveal that a proper description of the thermodynamic quantities, related to the superconducting pairing mechanism, requires the use of similar model containing the same set of parameters.

Superconducting gap structure of the skutterudite LaPt4Ge12 probed by specific heat and thermal transport

We investigated the superconducting order parameter of the filled skutterudite LaPt4Ge12, with a transition temperature of Tc = 8.3 K. To this end, we performed temperature and magnetic-field dependent specific-heat and thermal-conductivity measurements. All data are compatible with a single superconducting s-wave gap. However, a multiband scenario cannot be ruled out. The results are discussed in the context of previous studies on the substitution series Pr1-xLaxPt4Ge12. They suggest compatible order parameters for the two end compounds LaPt4Ge12 and PrPt4Ge12. This is not consistent with a single s-wave gap in LaPt4Ge12 considering previous reports of unconventional and/or multiband superconductivity in PrPt4Ge12.

Symmetry preserving lattice collapse in tetragonal SrFe_(2-x)Ru_xAs_2 (x = 0, 0.2) -- a combined experimental and theoretical study

In a joint experimental and theoretical study, we investigate the isostructural collapse from the ambient pressure tetragonal phase to a collapsed tetragonal phase for non-superconducting metallic SrFe2As2 and SrFe_1.8Ru_0.2As_2. The crystallographic details have been studied using X-ray powder diffraction up to 20 GPa pressure in a diamond anvil cell. The structural phase transition occurs at 10 GPa and 9 GPa for SrFe2As2 and SrFe_1.8Ru_0.2As_2, respectively. The changes in the unit cell dimensions are highly anisotropic with a continuous decrease of the c lattice parameter with pressure, while the a-axis length increases until the transition to a collapsed tetragonal phase and then continues to decrease. Across the phase transition, we observe a volume reduction of 5% and 4% for SrFe2As2 and SrFe_1.8Ru_0.2As_2, respectively. We are able to discern that Ru substitution on the Fe-site acts like `chemical pressure' to the system. Density-functional theory-based calculations of the electronic structure and electron localizability indicator are consistent with the experimental observations. Detailed analysis of the electronic structure in k-space and real space reveals As 4pz interlayer bond formation as the driving force of the c/a collapse with a change in the As-As bond length of about 0.35ang.
