Numerical simulation of skin transport using Parareal

In-silico investigation of skin permeation is an important but also computationally demanding problem. To resolve all scales involved in full detail will not only require exascale computing capacities but also suitable parallel algorithms. This article investigates the applicability of the time-parallel Parareal algorithm to a brick and mortar setup, a precursory problem to skin permeation. The C++ library Lib4PrM implementing Parareal is combined with the UG4 simulation framework, which provides the spatial discretization and parallelization. The combination's performance is studied with respect to convergence and speedup. It is confirmed that anisotropies in the domain and jumps in diffusion coefficients only have a minor impact on Parareal's convergence. The influence of load imbalances in time due to differences in number of iterations required by the spatial solver as well as spatio-temporal weak scaling is discussed.

Singularity resolution from polymer quantum matter

We study the polymeric nature of quantum matter fields using the example of a Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker universe sourced by a minimally coupled massless scalar field. The model is treated in the symmetry reduced regime via deparametrization techniques, with the scale factor playing the role of time. Subsequently, the remaining dynamic degrees of freedom corresponding to the matter are polymer quantized. The analysis of the resulting genuine quantum dynamic shows that the big bang singularity is resolved, although with the form of the resolution differing significantly from that in the models with matter clocks: dynamically, the singularity is made passable rather than avoided. Furthermore, this analysis exposes crucial limitations to the so-called effective dynamic in loop quantum cosmology when applied outside of the most basic isotropic settings.

Model for gravitational collapse in effective quantum gravity

We describe a non-perturbative approach to studying the gravitational collapse of a scalar field in spherical symmetry with quantum gravity corrections. Quantum effects are described by a phase space function that modifies the constraints of general relativity but does not affect the closure of their algebra. The model may be viewed as one that incorporates a class of anomaly-free quantum gravity effects. Numerical simulations of the resulting field equations show that the model reproduces known classical results for sufficiently massive initial data but gives a dramatic change at the threshold of black hole formation characterized by oscillations and a mass gap.

Modified general relativity as a model for quantum gravitational collapse

We study a class of Hamiltonian deformations of the massless Einstein-Klein-Gordon system in spherical symmetry for which the Dirac constraint algebra closes. The system may be regarded as providing effective equations for quantum gravitational collapse. Guided by the observation that scalar field fluxes do not follow metric null directions due to the deformation, we find that the equations take a simple form in characteristic coordinates. We analyse these equations by a unique combination of numerical methods and find that Choptuik's mass scaling law is modified by a mass gap as well as jagged oscillations. Furthermore, the results are universal with respect to different initial data profiles and robust under changes of the deformation.

Ultraviolet behavior in background independent quantum field theory

We describe a background independent quantization of the scalar field that provides an explicit realization of Fock-like states and associated operators in a polymer Hilbert space. The vacuum expectation values of the commutator and anti-commutator of the creation and annihilation operators become energy dependent, and exhibit a surprising transition to fermionic behavior at high energy. Furthermore the approach yields a modified dispersion relation with a leading correction proportional to the momentum cubed. These results suggests a fundamental change in the ultraviolet properties of quantum fields.

Singularity avoidance and time in quantum gravity

We consider the quantization of a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe. We derive a reduced square root Hamiltonian by choosing the scale factor as time variable and quantize the theory using the Dirac method. From the resulting spinor equation we show that there is no semiclassical wave packet that avoids the Big Bang singularity. Our work raises the question concerning the relationship between the choice of time and singularity avoidance.
