Invariant subspaces and explicit Bethe vectors in the integrable open spin $1/2$ $\XYZ$ chain

We derive a criterion under which splitting of all eigenstates of an open $\XYZ$ Hamiltonian with boundary fields into two invariant subspaces, spanned by chiral shock states, occurs. The splitting is governed by an integer number, which has the geometrical meaning of the maximal number of kinks in the basis states. We describe the generic structure of the respective Bethe vectors. We obtain explicit expressions for Bethe vectors, in the absence of Bethe roots, and those generated by one Bethe root, and investigate the \multiplet. We also describe in detail an elliptic analogue of the spin-helix state, appearing in both the periodic and the open $\XYZ$ model, and derive the eigenstate condition. The elliptic analogue of the spin-helix state is characterized by a quasi-periodic modulation of the magnetization profile, governed by Jacobi elliptic functions.

Groundstate finite-size corrections and dilogarithm identities for the twisted $A_1^{(1)}$, $A_2^{(1)}$ and $A_2^{(2)}$ models

We consider the $Y$-systems satisfied by the $A_1^{(1)}$, $A_2^{(1)}$, $A_2^{(2)}$ vertex and loop models at roots of unity with twisted boundary conditions on the cylinder. The vertex models are the 6-, 15- and Izergin-Korepin 19-vertex models respectively. The corresponding loop models are the dense, fully packed and dilute Temperley-Lieb loop models respectively. For all three models, our focus is on roots of unity values of $e^{iλ}$ with the crossing parameter $λ$ corresponding to the principal and dual series of these models. Converting the known functional equations to nonlinear integral equations in the form of Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA) equations, we solve the $Y$-systems for the finite-size $\frac 1N$ corrections to the groundstate eigenvalue following the methods of Klümper and Pearce. The resulting expressions for $c-24Δ$, where $c$ is the central charge and $Δ$ is the conformal weight associated with the groundstate, are simplified using various dilogarithm identities. Our analytic results are in agreement with previous results obtained by different methods and are new for the dual series of the $A_2^{(1)}$ model.

Thermal form-factor approach to dynamical correlation functions of integrable lattice models

We propose a method for calculating dynamical correlation functions at finite temperature in integrable lattice models of Yang-Baxter type. The method is based on an expansion of the correlation functions as a series over matrix elements of a time-dependent quantum transfer matrix rather than the Hamiltonian. In the infinite Trotter-number limit the matrix elements become time independent and turn into the thermal form factors studied previously in the context of static correlation functions. We make this explicit with the example of the XXZ model. We show how the form factors can be summed utilizing certain auxiliary functions solving finite sets of nonlinear integral equations. The case of the XX model is worked out in more detail leading to a novel form-factor series representation of the dynamical transverse two-point function.

Computation of static Heisenberg-chain correlators: Control over length and temperature dependence

We communicate results on correlation functions for the spin-1/2 Heisenberg-chain in two particularly important cases: (a) for the infinite chain at arbitrary finite temperature $T$, and (b) for finite chains of arbitrary length $L$ in the ground-state. In both cases we present explicit formulas expressing the short-range correlators in a range of up to seven lattice sites in terms of a single function $ω$ encoding the dependence of the correlators on $T$ ($L$). These formulas allow us to obtain accurate numerical values for the correlators and derived quantities like the entanglement entropy. By calculating the low $T$ (large $L$) asymptotics of $ω$ we show that the asymptotics of the static correlation functions at any finite distance are $T^2$ ($1/L^2$) terms. We obtain exact and explicit formulas for the coefficients of the leading order terms for up to eight lattice sites.

Matrix product states for $su(2)$ invariant quantum spin chains

A systematic and compact treatment of arbitrary $su(2)$ invariant spin-$s$ quantum chains with nearest-neighbour interactions is presented. The ground-state is derived in terms of matrix product states (MPS). The fundamental MPS calculations consist of taking products of basic tensors of rank 3 and contractions thereof. The algebraic $su(2)$ calculations are carried out completely by making use of Wigner calculus. As an example of application, the spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic quantum chain is investigated. Various physical quantities are calculated with high numerical accuracy of up to 7 digits. We obtain explicit results for the ground-state energy, entanglement entropy, singlet operator correlations and the string order parameter. We find interesting crossover phenomena in the correlation lengths.

Correlation functions of the integrable isotropic spin-1 chain: algebraic expressions for arbitrary temperature

We derive algebraic formulas for the density matrices of finite segments of the integrable su(2) isotropic spin-1 chain in the thermodynamic limit. We give explicit results for the 2 and 3 site cases for arbitrary temperature T and zero field. In the zero temperature limit the correlation functions are given in elementary form in terms of Riemann's zeta function at even integer arguments.

Exact description of the magnetoelectric effect in the spin-1/2 XXZ-chain with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

We consider a simple integrable model of a spin chain exhibiting the Magnetoelectric Effect (MEE). Starting from the periodic S=1/2 XXZ-chain with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya terms, which we consider as a local electric polarization in the spirit of the Katsura-Nagaosa-Baladsky (KNB) mechanism, we perform the mapping onto the conventional XXZ-chain with twisted boundary conditions. Using the techniques of Quantum Transfer Matrix (QTM) and Non-Linear Integral Equations (NLIE) we obtain the magnetization, electric polarization and magnetoelectric tensor as functions of magnetic and electric field for arbitrary temperatures. We investigate these dependencies as well as the thermal behavior of the above mentioned physical quantities, especially in the low-temperature regime. We found several regimes of polarization. Adjusting the magnetic field one can switch the system from one regime to another. The features of the critical properties connected with the MEE are also illustrated.

Entanglement spectra of q-deformed higher spin VBS states

We calculate the reduced density matrix of a block of integer spin-S's in a q-deformed valence-bond-solid (VBS) state. This matrix is diagonalized exactly for an infinitely long block in an infinitely long chain. We construct an effective Hamiltonian with the same spectrum as the logarithm of the density matrix. We also derive analytic expressions for the von Neumann and Rényi entanglement entropies. For blocks of finite length, we calculate the eigenvalues of the reduced density matrix by perturbation theory and numerical diagonalization. These results enable us to describe the effects of finite-size corrections on the entanglement spectrum and entropy in this generalized VBS model.

Entanglement spectra of the q-deformed Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki model and matrix product states

We exactly calculate the reduced density matrix of matrix product states (MPS). Our compact result enables one to perform analytic studies of entanglement in MPS. In particular, we consider the MPS ground states of two anisotropic spin chains. One is a q-deformed Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) model and the other is a general spin-1 quantum antiferromagnet with nearest-neighbor interactions. Our analysis shows how anisotropy affects entanglement on different continuous parameter manifolds. We also construct an effective boundary spin model that describes a block of spins in the ground state of the q-deformed AKLT Hamiltonian. The temperature of this effective model is given in terms of the deformation parameter q.

Finite temperature correlation functions from discrete functional equations

We present a new approach to the static finite temperature correlation functions of the Heisenberg chain based on functional equations. An inhomogeneous generalization of the n-site density operator is considered. The lattice path integral formulation with a finite but arbitrary Trotter number allows to derive a set of discrete functional equations with respect to the spectral parameters. We show that these equations yield a unique characterization of the density operator. Our functional equations are a discrete version of the reduced q-Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations which played a central role in the study of the zero temperature case. As a natural result, and independent of the arguments given by Jimbo, Miwa, and Smirnov (2009) we prove that the inhomogeneous finite temperature correlation functions have the same remarkable structure as for zero temperature: they are a sum of products of nearest-neighbor correlators.

Density matrices for finite segments of Heisenberg chains of arbitrary length

We derive a multiple integral representing the ground state density matrix of a segment of length $m$ of the XXZ spin chain on $L$ lattice sites, which depends on $L$ only parametrically. This allows us to treat chains of arbitrary finite length. Specializing to the isotropic limit of the XXX chain we show for small $m$ that the multiple integrals factorize. We conjecture that this property holds for arbitrary $m$ and suggest an exponential formula for the density matrix which involves only a double Cauchy type integral in the exponent. We demonstrate the efficiency of our formula by computing the next-to-nearest neighbour $zz$-correlation function for chain lengths ranging from two to macroscopic numbers.

Diagrammatics for SU(2) invariant matrix product states

We report on a systematic implementation of su(2) invariance for matrix product states (MPS) with concrete computations cast in a diagrammatic language. As an application we present a variational MPS study of $su(2)$ invariant quantum spin systems. For efficient computations we make systematic use of the su(2) symmetry at all steps of the calculations: (i) the matrix space is set up as a direct sum of irreducible representations, (ii) the local matrices with state-valued entries are set up as superposition of su(2) singlet operators, (iii) products of operators are evaluated algebraically by making use of identities for $3j$ and $6j$ symbols. The remaining numerical computations like the diagonalization of the associated transfer matrix and the minimization of the energy expectation value are done in spaces free of symmetry degeneracies. The energy expectation value is a strict upper bound of the true ground-state energy and yields definite conclusions about the accuracy of DMRG results reported in the literature. Furthermore, we present explicit results with accuracy better than $10^{-4}$ for nearest- and next-nearest neighbour spin correlators and for general dimer-dimer correlators in the thermodynamical limit of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain with frustration.

On the theory of microwave absorption by the spin-1/2 Heisenberg-Ising magnet

We analyze the problem of microwave absorption by the Heisenberg-Ising magnet in terms of shifted moments of the imaginary part of the dynamical susceptibility. When both, the Zeeman field and the wave vector of the incident microwave, are parallel to the anisotropy axis, the first four moments determine the shift of the resonance frequency and the line width in a situation where the frequency is varied for fixed Zeeman field. For the one-dimensional model we can calculate the moments exactly. This provides exact data for the resonance shift and the line width at arbitrary temperatures and magnetic fields. In current ESR experiments the Zeeman field is varied for fixed frequency. We show how in this situation the moments give perturbative results for the resonance shift and for the integrated intensity at small anisotropy as well as an explicit formula connecting the line width with the anisotropy parameter in the high-temperature limit.

The complete conformal spectrum of a $sl(2|1)$ invariant network model and logarithmic corrections

We investigate the low temperature asymptotics and the finite size spectrum of a class of Temperley-Lieb models. As reference system we use the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain with anisotropy parameter $Δ$ and twisted boundary conditions. Special emphasis is placed on the study of logarithmic corrections appearing in the case of $Δ=1/2$ in the bulk susceptibility data and in the low-energy spectrum yielding the conformal dimensions. For the $sl(2|1)$ invariant 3-state representation of the Temperley-Lieb algebra with $Δ=1/2$ we give the complete set of scaling dimensions which show huge degeneracies.

Exact calculation of the magnetocaloric effect in the spin-1/2 XXZ chain

We calculate the entropy and cooling rate of the antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 XXZ chain under an adiabatic demagnetization process using the quantum transfer-matrix technique and non-linear integral equations. The limiting case of the Ising chain (corresponding to infinitely large anisotropy) is presented for comparison. Our exact results for the Heisenberg chain are used as a crosscheck for the numerical exact diagonalization as well as Quantum Monte Carlo simulations and allow us to benchmark the numerical methods. Close to field-induced quantum phase transitions we observe a large magnetocaloric effect. Furthermore, we verify universal low-temperature power laws in the cooling rate and entropy, in particular linear scaling of entropy with temperature T in the gapless Luttinger-liquid state and scaling as \sqrt{T} at field-induced transitions to gapped phases.

Structural and magnetic instabilities of layered magnetic systems

We present a study of the magnetic order and the structural stability of two-dimensional quantum spin systems in the presence of spin-lattice coupling. For a square lattice it is shown that the plaquette formation is the most favourable form of static two-dimensional dimerization. We also demonstrate that such distortions may coexist with long range magnetic order, in contrast to the one-dimensional case. Similarly, the coupling to Einstein phonons is found to reduce, but not to eliminate the staggered magnetic moment. In addition, we consider the renormalization of the square lattice phonon spectrum due to spin-phonon coupling in the adiabatic approximation. Towards low temperatures significant softening mainly of zone boundary phonons is found, especially around the $(π,0)$ point of the Brillouin zone. This result is compatible with the tendency to plaquette formation in the static limit. We also point out the importance of a "magnetic pressure" on the lattice due to spin-phonon coupling. At low temperatures, this results in a tendency towards shear instabilities of the lattice.

Temperature dependent spatial oscillations in the correlations of the XXZ spin chain

We study the correlation $<σ^z_0σ^z_n>$ for the XXZ chain in the massless attractive (ferromagnetic) region at positive temperatures by means of a numerical study of the quantum transfer matrix. We find that there is a range of temperature where the behavior of the correlation for large separations is oscillatory with an incommensurate period which depends on temperature.
