Gross-Pitaevskii Limit of a Homogeneous Bose Gas at Positive Temperature

We consider a dilute, homogeneous Bose gas at positive temperature. The system is investigated in the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) limit, where the scattering length $a$ is so small that the interaction energy is of the same order of magnitude as the spectral gap of the Laplacian, and for temperatures that are comparable to the critical temperature of the ideal gas. We show that the difference between the specific free energy of the interacting system and the one of the ideal gas is to leading order given by $4 πa \left( 2 \varrho^2 - \varrho_0^2 \right)$. Here $\varrho$ denotes the density of the system and $\varrho_0$ is the expected condensate density of the ideal gas. Additionally, we show that the one-particle density matrix of any approximate minimizer of the Gibbs free energy functional is to leading order given by the one of the ideal gas. This in particular proves Bose-Einstein condensation with critical temperature given by the one of the ideal gas to leading order. One key ingredient of our proof is a novel use of the Gibbs variational principle that goes hand in hand with the c-number substitution.

The free energy of the two-dimensional dilute Bose gas. I. Lower bound

We prove a lower bound for the free energy (per unit volume) of the two-dimensional Bose gas in the thermodynamic limit. We show that the free energy at density $ρ$ and inverse temperature $β$ differs from the one of the non-interacting system by the correction term $4 πρ^2 |\ln a^2 ρ|^{-1} (2 - [1 - β_{\mathrm{c}}/β]_+^2)$. Here $a$ is the scattering length of the interaction potential, $[\cdot]_+ = \max\{ 0, \cdot \}$ and $β_{\mathrm{c}}$ is the inverse Berezinskii--Kosterlitz--Thouless critical temperature for superfluidity. The result is valid in the dilute limit $a^2ρ\ll 1$ and if $βρ\gtrsim 1$.

Note on a Family of Monotone Quantum Relative Entropies

Given a convex function $φ$ and two hermitian matrices $A$ and $B$, Lewin and Sabin study in [M. Lewin, J. Sabin, {\it A Family of Monotone Quantum Relative Entropies}, Lett. Math. Phys. \textbf{104} (2014), 691-705.] the relative entropy defined by $\mathcal{H}(A,B)=\text{Tr} [ φ(A) - φ(B) - φ'(B)(A-B) ]$. Amongst other things, they prove that the so-defined quantity is monotone if and only if $φ'$ is operator monotone. The monotonicity is then used to properly define $\mathcal{H}(A,B)$ for self-adjoint bounded operators acting on an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space by a limiting procedure. More precisely, for an increasing sequence of finite-dimensional projections $\lbrace P_n \rbrace_{n=1}^{\infty}$ with $P_n \to 1$ strongly, the limit $\lim_{n \to \infty} \mathcal{H}(P_n A P_n, P_n B P_n)$ is shown to exist and to be independent of the sequence of projections $\lbrace P_n \rbrace_{n=1}^{\infty}$. The question whether this sequence converges to its "obvious" limit, namely $\text{Tr} [ φ(A)- φ(B) - φ'(B)(A-B) ]$, has been left open. We answer this question in principle affirmatively and show that $\lim_{n \to \infty} \mathcal{H}(P_n A P_n, P_n B P_n) = \text{Tr}[ φ(A) - φ(B) - \frac{\text{d}}{\text{d} α} φ( αA + (1-α)B )|_{α= 0} ]$. If the operators $A$ and $B$ are regular enough, that is $(A-B)$, $φ(A)-φ(B)$ and $φ'(B)(A-B)$ are trace-class, the identity $\text{Tr}[ φ(A) - φ(B) - \frac{\text{d}}{\text{d} α} φ( αA + (1-α)B )|_{α= 0} ] = \text{Tr} [ φ(A)- φ(B) - φ'(B)(A-B) ]$ holds.

Dynamics and symmetries of a repulsively bound atom pair in an infinite optical lattice

We investigate the dynamics of two bosons trapped in an infinite one-dimensional optical lattice potential within the framework of the Bose-Hubbard model and derive an exact expression for the wavefunction at finite time. As initial condition we chose localized atoms that are separated by a distance of $d$ lattice sites and carry a center of mass quasi-momentum. An initially localized pair ($d=0$) is found to be more stable as quantified by the pair probability (probability to find two atoms at the same lattice site) when the interaction and/or the center of mass quasi-momentum is increased. For initially separated atoms ($d \neq 0$) there exists an optimal interaction strength for pair formation. Simple expressions for the wavefunction, the pair probability and the optimal interaction strength for pair formation are computed in the limit of infinite time. Whereas the time-dependent wavefunction differs for values of the interaction strength that differ only by the sign, important observables like the density and the pair probability do not. With a symmetry analysis this behavior is shown to extend to the $N$-particle level and to fermionic systems. Our results provide a complementary understanding of the recently observed [Winkler \textit{et al.}, Nature (London) \textbf{441}, 853 (2006)] dynamical stability of atom pairs in a repulsively interacting lattice gas.
