On Curvature and Torsion in Courant Algebroids

We study the graded geometric point of view of curvature and torsion of Q-manifolds (differential graded manifolds). In particular, we get a natural graded geometric definition of Courant algebroid curvature and torsion, which correctly restrict to Dirac structures. Depending on an auxiliary affine connection K, we introduce the K-curvature and K-torsion of a Courant algebroid connection. These are conventional tensors on the body. Finally, we compute their Ricci and scalar curvature.

Unipolar and bipolar aerosol charging as time continuous Markov processes

The acquisition of charge by aerosol particles is well-known to be stochastic in nature. We review the principles of charging using the conceptually and computationally clear language of continuous time Markov processes. A novel numeric approach is presented that can be used to calculate the time evolution of various particle charging processes. Its modular character makes it easy to implement and allows for quick adaptation to specific problems. We conclude with the application of ergodicity for finite state-space Markov processes in order to determine stationary charge distributions in case of bipolar charging.

T-duality without isometry via extended gauge symmetries of 2D sigma models

Target space duality is one of the most profound properties of string theory. However it customarily requires that the background fields satisfy certain invariance conditions in order to perform it consistently; for instance the vector fields along the directions that T-duality is performed have to generate isometries. In the present paper we examine in detail the possibility to perform T-duality along non-isometric directions. In particular, based on a recent work of Kotov and Strobl, we study gauged 2D sigma models where gauge invariance for an extended set of gauge transformations imposes weaker constraints than in the standard case, notably the corresponding vector fields are not Killing. This formulation enables us to follow a procedure analogous to the derivation of the Buscher rules and obtain two dual models, by integrating out once the Lagrange multipliers and once the gauge fields. We show that this construction indeed works in non-trivial cases by examining an explicit class of examples based on step 2 nilmanifolds.

Sigma-model limit of Yang-Mills instantons in higher dimensions

We consider the Hermitian Yang-Mills (instanton) equations for connections on vector bundles over a 2n-dimensional Kähler manifold X which is a product Y x Z of p- and q-dimensional Riemannian manifold Y and Z with p+q=2n. We show that in the adiabatic limit, when the metric in the Z direction is scaled down, the gauge instanton equations on Y x Z become sigma-model instanton equations for maps from Y to the moduli space M (target space) of gauge instantons on Z if q>= 4. For q<4 we get maps from Y to the moduli space M of flat connections on Z. Thus, the Yang-Mills instantons on Y x Z converge to sigma-model instantons on Y while Z shrinks to a point. Put differently, for small volume of Z, sigma-model instantons on Y with target space M approximate Yang-Mills instantons on Y x Z.

Star products on graded manifolds and $α'$-corrections to Courant algebroids from string theory

Deformation theory refers to an apparatus in many parts of math and physics for going from an infinitesimal (= first order) deformation to a full deformation, either formal or convergent appropriately. If the algebra being deformed is that of observables, the result is deformation quantization, independent of any realization in terms of Hilbert space operators. There are very important but rare cases in which a formula for a full deformation is known. For physics, the most important is the Moyal-Weyl star product formula. In this paper, we concentrate on deformations of Courant algebroid structures via star products on graded manifolds. In particular, we construct a graded version of the Moyal-Weyl star product. Recently, in Double Field Theory (DFT), deformations of the C-bracket and O(d,d)-invariant bilinear form to first order in the closed string sigma model coupling $α'$ were derived by analyzing the transformation properties of the Neveu-Schwarz B-field. By choosing a particular Poisson structure on the Drinfel'd double corresponding to the Courant algebroid structure of the generalized tangent bundle, we reproduce these deformations for a specific solution of the strong constraint of DFT as expansion of a graded version of the Moyal-Weyl star product.

Star products on graded manifolds and $α'$-corrections to double field theory

Originally proposed as an $O(d,d)$-invariant formulation of classical closed string theory, double field theory (DFT) offers a rich source of mathematical structures. Most prominently, its gauge algebra is determined by the so-called C-bracket, a generalization of the Courant bracket of generalized geometry, in the sense that it reduces to the latter by restricting the theory to solutions of a "strong constraint". Recently, infinitesimal deformations of these structures in the string sigma model coupling $α'$ were found. In this short contribution, we review constructing the Drinfel'd double of a Lie bialgebroid and offer how this can be applied to reproduce the C-bracket of DFT in terms of Poisson brackets. As a consequence, we are able to explain the $α'$-deformations via a graded version of the Moyal-Weyl product in a class of examples. We conclude with comments on the relation between $B$- and $β$-transformations in generalized geometry and the Atiyah algebra on the Drinfel'd double.

Even symplectic supermanifolds and double field theory

Over many decades, the word "double" has appeared in various contexts, at times seemingly unrelated. Several have some relation to mathematical physics. Recently, this has become particularly strking in DFT (double field theory). Two 'doubles' that are particularly relevant are double vector bundles and Drinfel'd doubles. The original Drinfel'd double occurred in the contexts of quantum groups and of Lie bialgebras. Quoting T. Voronov: "Double Lie algebroids arose in the works on double Lie groupoids and in connection with an analog for Lie bialgebroids of the classical Drinfel'd double of Lie bialgebras...Suppose $(A,A^*)$ is a Lie bialgebroid over a base $M$... Mackenzie and Roytenberg suggested two different constructions based on the cotangent bundles $T^*A$ and $T^*ΠA$, respectively. Here $Π$ is the fibre-wise parity reversal functor." Although the approaches of Roytenberg and of Mackenzie look very different, Voronov establishes their equivalence. We have found Roytenberg's version to be quite congenial with our attempt to interpret the gauge algebra of DFT in terms of Poisson brackets on a suitable generalized Drinfel'd double. This double of a Lie bialgebroid $(A,A^*)$ provides a framework to describe the differentials of $A$ and $A^*$ on an equal footing as Hamiltonian functions on an even symplectic supermanifold. A special choice of momenta explicates the double coordinates of DFT and shows their relation to the strong constraint determining the physical fields of double field theory.

A bi-invariant Einstein-Hilbert action for the non-geometric string

Inspired by recent studies on string theory with non-geometric fluxes, we develop a differential geometry calculus combining usual diffeomorphisms with what we call beta-diffeomorphisms. This allows us to construct a manifestly bi-invariant Einstein-Hilbert type action for the graviton, the dilaton and a dynamical (quasi-)symplectic structure. The equations of motion of this symplectic gravity theory, further generalizations and the relation to the usual form of the string effective action are discussed. The Seiberg-Witten limit, known for open strings to relate commutative with non-commutative theories, makes an interesting appearance.

Lie algebroids, non-associative structures and non-geometric fluxes

In the first part of this article, the geometry of Lie algebroids as well as the Moyal-Weyl star product and some of its generalizations in open string theory are reviewed. A brief introduction to T-duality and non-geometric fluxes is given. Based on these foundations, more recent results are discussed in the second part of the article. On the world-sheet level, we will analyse closed string theory with flat background and constant H-flux. After an odd number of T-dualities, correlation functions allow to extract a three-product having a pattern similar to the Moyal-Weyl product. We then focus on the target space and the local appearance of the various fluxes. An algebra based on vector fields is proposed, whose structure functions are given by the fluxes. Jacobi-identities for vector fields allow for the computation of Bianchi-identities. Based on the latter, we give a proof for a special Courant algebroid structure on the generalized tangent bundle, where the fluxes are realized by the commutation relations of a basis of sections. As reviewed in the first part of this work, in the description of non-geometric Q- and R-fluxes, the B-field gets replaced by a bi-vector β, which is supposed to serve as the dual object to B under T-duality. A natural question is about the existence of a differential geometric framework allowing the construction of actions manifestly invariant under coordinate- and gauge transformations, which couple the β-field to gravity. It turns out that Lie algebroids are the right language to answer this question positively. We conclude by giving an outlook on future directions.

Non-geometric strings, symplectic gravity and differential geometry of Lie algebroids

Based on the structure of a Lie algebroid for non-geometric fluxes in string theory, a differential-geometry calculus is developed which combines usual diffeomorphisms with so-called β-diffeomorphisms emanating from gauge symmetries of the Kalb-Ramond field. This allows to construct a bi-invariant action of Einstein-Hilbert type comprising a metric, a (quasi-)symplectic structure βand a dilaton. As a salient feature, this symplectic gravity action and the resulting equations of motion take a form which is similar to the standard action and field equations. Furthermore, the two actions turn out to be related via a field redefinition reminiscent of the Seiberg-Witten limit. Remarkably, this redefinition admits a direct generalization to higher-order α'-corrections and to the additional fields and couplings appearing in the effective action of the superstring. Simple solutions to the equations of motion of the symplectic gravity action, including Calabi-Yau geometries, are discussed.

The Intriguing Structure of Non-geometric Frames in String Theory

Non-geometric frames in string theory are related to the geometric ones by certain local O(D,D) transformations, the so-called $β$-transforms. For each such transformation, we show that there exists both a natural field redefinition of the metric and the Kalb-Ramond two-form as well as an associated Lie algebroid. We furthermore prove that the all-order low-energy effective action of the superstring, written in terms of the redefined fields, can be expressed through differential-geometric objects of the corresponding Lie algebroid. Thus, the latter provides a natural framework for effective superstring actions in non-geometric frames. Relations of this new formalism to double field theory and to the description of non-geometric backgrounds such as T-folds are discussed as well.

Bianchi Identities for Non-Geometric Fluxes - From Quasi-Poisson Structures to Courant Algebroids

Starting from a (non-associative) quasi-Poisson structure, the derivation of a Roytenberg-type algebra is presented. From the Jacobi identities of the latter, the most general form of Bianchi identities for fluxes (H,f,Q,R) is then derived. It is also explained how this approach is related to the mathematical theory of quasi-Lie and Courant algebroids.

Palatini-Lovelock-Cartan Gravity - Bianchi Identities for Stringy Fluxes

A Palatini-type action for Einstein and Gauss-Bonnet gravity with non-trivial torsion is proposed. Three-form flux is incorporated via a deformation of the Riemann tensor, and consistency of the Palatini variational principle requires the flux to be covariantly constant and to satisfy a Jacobi identity. Studying gravity actions of third order in the curvature leads to a conjecture about general Palatini-Lovelock-Cartan gravity. We point out potential relations to string-theoretic Bianchi identities and, using the Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket, derive a set of Bianchi identities for the non-geometric Q- and R-fluxes which include derivative and curvature terms. Finally, the problem of relating torsional gravity to higher-order corrections of the bosonic string-effective action is revisited.

Non-geometric Fluxes, Asymmetric Strings and Nonassociative Geometry

We study closed bosonic strings propagating both in a flat background with constant H-flux and in its T-dual configurations. We define a conformal field theory capturing linear effects in the flux and compute scattering amplitudes of tachyons, where the Rogers dilogarithm plays a prominent role. For the scattering of four tachyons, a fluxed version of the Virasoro-Shapiro amplitude is derived and its pole structure is analyzed. In the case of an R-flux background obtained after three T-dualities, we find indications for a nonassociative target-space structure which can be described in terms of a deformed tri-product. Remarkably, this product is compatible with crossing symmetry of conformal correlation functions. We finally argue that the R-flux background flows to an asymmetric CFT.

FCNC Processes from D-brane Instantons

Low string scale models might be tested at the LHC directly by their Regge resonances. For such models it is important to investigate the constraints of Standard Model precision measurements on the string scale. It is shown that highly suppressed FCNC processes like K0- bar K^0 oscillations or leptonic decays of the D0-meson provide non-negligible lower bounds on both the perturbatively and surprisingly also non-perturbatively induced string theory couplings. We present both the D-brane instanton formalism to compute such amplitudes and discuss various possible scenarios and their constraints on the string scale for (softly broken) supersymmetric intersecting D-brane models.
