Power variations for fractional type infinitely divisible random fields

This paper presents new limit theorems for power variation of fractional type symmetric infinitely divisible random fields. More specifically, the random field $X = (X(\boldsymbol{t}))_{\boldsymbol{t} \in [0,1]^d}$ is defined as an integral of a kernel function $g$ with respect to a symmetric infinitely divisible random measure $L$ and is observed on a grid with mesh size $n^{-1}$. As $n \to \infty$, the first order limits are obtained for power variation statistics constructed from rectangular increments of $X$. The present work is mostly related to Basse-O'Connor, Lachièze-Rey, Podolskij (2017), Basse-O'Connor, Heinrich, Podolskij (2019), who studied a similar problem in the case $d=1$. We will see, however, that the asymptotic theory in the random field setting is much richer compared to Basse-O'Connor, Lachièze-Rey, Podolskij (2017), Basse-O'Connor, Heinrich, Podolskij (2019) as it contains new limits, which depend on the precise structure of the kernel $g$. We will give some important examples including the Lévy moving average field, the well-balanced symmetric linear fractional $β$-stable sheet, and the moving average fractional $β$-stable field, and discuss potential consequences for statistical inference.

Limit theorems for a class of stationary increments Levy driven moving averages

In this paper we present some new limit theorems for power variation of $k$th order increments of stationary increments Lévy driven moving averages. In the infill asymptotic setting, where the sampling frequency converges to zero while the time span remains fixed, the asymptotic theory gives very surprising results, which (partially) have no counterpart in the theory of discrete moving averages. More specifically, we will show that the first order limit theorems and the mode of convergence strongly depend on the interplay between the given order of the increments, the considered power $p>0$, the Blumenthal--Getoor index $β\in (0,2)$ of the driving pure jump Lévy process $L$ and the behaviour of the kernel function $g$ at $0$ determined by the power $α$. First order asymptotic theory essentially comprises three cases: stable convergence towards a certain infinitely divisible distribution, an ergodic type limit theorem and convergence in probability towards an integrated random process. We also prove the second order limit theorem connected to the ergodic type result. When the driving Lévy process $L$ is a symmetric $β$-stable process we obtain two different limits: a central limit theorem and convergence in distribution towards a $(1-α)β$-stable totally right skewed random variable.

On limit theory for Levy semi-stationary processes

In this paper we present some limit theorems for power variation of Lévy semi-stationary processes in the setting of infill asymptotics. Lévy semi-stationary processes, which are a one-dimensional analogue of ambit fields, are moving average type processes with a multiplicative random component, which is usually referred to as volatility or intermittency. From the mathematical point of view this work extends the asymptotic theory investigated in [14], where the authors derived the limit theory for $k$th order increments of stationary increments Lévy driven moving averages. The asymptotic results turn out to heavily depend on the interplay between the given order of the increments, the considered power $p>0$, the Blumenthal--Getoor index $β\in (0,2)$ of the driving pure jump Lévy process $L$ and the behaviour of the kernel function $g$ at $0$ determined by the power $α$. In this paper we will study the first order asymptotic theory for Lévy semi-stationary processes with a random volatility/intermittency component and present some statistical applications of the probabilistic results.

On infinitely divisible semimartingales

Stricker's theorem states that a Gaussian process is a semimartingale in its natural filtration if and only if it is the sum of an independent increment Gaussian process and a Gaussian process of finite variation, see [1983, Z. Wahrsch. Verw. Gebiete 64(3)]. We consider extensions of this result to non Gaussian infinitely divisible processes. First we show that the class of infinitely divisible semimartingales is so large that the natural analog of Stricker's theorem fails to hold. Then, as the main result, we prove that an infinitely divisible semimartingale relative to the filtration generated by a random measure admits a unique decomposition into an independent increment process and an infinitely divisible process of finite variation. Consequently, the natural analog of Stricker's theorem holds for all strictly representable processes (as defined in this paper). Since Gaussian processes are strictly representable due to Hida's multiplicity theorem, the classical Stricker's theorem follows from our result. Another consequence is that the question when an infinitely divisible process is a semimartingale can often be reduced to a path property, when a certain associated infinitely divisible process is of finite variation. This gives the key to characterize the semimartingale property for many processes of interest. Along these lines, we characterize semimartingales within a large class of stationary increment infinitely divisible processes; this class includes many infinitely divisible processes, including linear fractional processes, mixed moving averages, and supOU processes, as particular cases. The proof of the main theorem relies on series representations of jumps of cadlag infinitely divisible processes given in Basse-O'Connor and Rosinski [2013, Ann. Probab. 41(6)] combined with techniques of stochastic analysis.

Structure of infinitely divisible semimartingales

This paper gives a complete characterization of infinitely divisible semimartingales, i.e., semimartingales whose finite dimensional distributions are infinitely divisible. An explicit and essentially unique decomposition of such semimartingales is obtained. A new approach, combining series decompositions of infinitely divisible processes with detailed analysis of their jumps, is presented. As an ilustration of the main result, the semimartingale property is explicitely determined for a large class of stationary increment processes and several examples of processes of interest are considered. These results extend Stricker's theorem characterizing Gaussian semimartingales and Knight's theorem describing Gaussian moving average semimartingales, in particular.

Characterization of the finite variation property for a class of stationary increment infinitely divisible processes

We characterize the finite variation property for stationary increment mixed moving averages driven by infinitely divisible random measures. Such processes include fractional and moving average processes driven by Levy processes, and also their mixtures. We establish two types of zero-one laws for the finite variation property. We also consider some examples to illustrate our results.

On the uniform convergence of random series in Skorohod space and representations of càdlàg infinitely divisible processes

Let $X_n$ be independent random elements in the Skorohod space $D([0,1];E)$ of càdlàg functions taking values in a separable Banach space $E$. Let $S_n=\sum_{j=1}^nX_j$. We show that if $S_n$ converges in finite dimensional distributions to a càdlàg process, then $S_n+y_n$ converges a.s. pathwise uniformly over $[0,1]$, for some $y_n\in D([0,1];E)$. This result extends the Itô-Nisio theorem to the space $D([0,1];E)$, which is surprisingly lacking in the literature even for $E=R$. The main difficulties of dealing with $D([0,1];E)$ in this context are its nonseparability under the uniform norm and the discontinuity of addition under Skorohod's $J_1$-topology. We use this result to prove the uniform convergence of various series representations of càdlàg infinitely divisible processes. As a consequence, we obtain explicit representations of the jump process, and of related path functionals, in a general non-Markovian setting. Finally, we illustrate our results on an example of stable processes. To this aim we obtain new criteria for such processes to have càdlàg modifications, which may also be of independent interest.

Quasi Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes

The question of existence and properties of stationary solutions to Langevin equations driven by noise processes with stationary increments is discussed, with particular focus on noise processes of pseudo-moving-average type. On account of the Wold-Karhunen decomposition theorem, such solutions are, in principle, representable as a moving average (plus a drift-like term) but the kernel in the moving average is generally not available in explicit form. A class of cases is determined where an explicit expression of the kernel can be given, and this is used to obtain information on the asymptotic behavior of the associated autocorrelation functions, both for small and large lags. Applications to Gaussian- and Lévy-driven fractional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes are presented. A Fubini theorem for Lévy bases is established as an element in the derivations.

Martingale-type processes indexed by the real line

Some classes of increment martingales, and the corresponding localized classes, are studied. An increment martingale is indexed by the real line and its increment processes are martingales. We focus primarily on the behavior as time goes to minus infinity in relation to the quadratic variation or the predictable quadratic variation, and we relate the limiting behavior to the martingale property. Finally, integration with respect to an increment martingale is studied.
