Update on $SU(2)$ with one adjoint Dirac flavor

We present an update of our ongoing study of the SU(2) gauge theory with one flavor of Dirac fermion in the adjoint representation. Compared to our previous results we now have data at larger lattice volumes, smaller values of the fermion mass, and also larger values of $β$. We present data for the spectrum of mesons, baryons, glueballs, and the hybrid fermion-glue state, as well as new estimates of the mass anomalous dimension from both finite-size hyperscaling and the Dirac mode number, and discuss the implications of these data for the presence or otherwise of chiral symmetry breaking in this theory.

Confining strings, axions and glueballs in the planar limit

We present recent results on the spectrum of a confining flux tube that is closed around a spatial torus as a function of its length as well as the spectrum of glueballs. The extraction of the spectra has been realized by simulating four dimensional $SU(N)$ gauge theories and performing measurements using lattice techniques. Regarding flux-tubes, we have performed calculations for $N=3,5,6$ and for various values of spin, parity and longitudinal momentum. Long flux-tubes can be thought of as infinitesimally thin strings; hence their spectrum is expected to be described by an effective string theory. Furthermore, the flux-tube's internal structure makes possible the existence of massive states in addition to string modes. Our calculations demonstrate that although most states exhibit a spectrum which can be approximated adequately by Nambu-Goto there is strong evidence for the existence of a massive axion on the world-sheet of the QCD flux-tube as well as a bound state of two such axions. Regarding glueballs, we extracted spectra from $N=2$ to $N=12$ which enables us to extrapolate to $N= \infty$. Our main aim was to calculate the lightest glueball masses for all different configurations of the quantum numbers of spin, parity and charge conjugation. This provides a major update on the spectrum of glueballs in the planar limit.

Investigating the conformal behaviour of SU(2) with one adjoint Dirac flavor

We present a major update on our investigations of SU(2) gauge theory with one Dirac flavor in the adjoint representation on the lattice. In particular we consider larger volumes, as well as four different values of the gauge coupling. We provide results for the spectrum including gluonic, fermionic, and hybrid observables, Polyakov loops, and the anomalous dimension of the fermionic condensate from the Dirac mode number. These data confirm that the theory is close to the lower boundary of the conformal window for adjoint fermions. Our investigations provide important insights regarding the realization of different infrared scenarios that have been conjectured for this theory.

SU(N) gauge theories in 3+1 dimensions: glueball spectrum, string tensions and topology

We calculate the low-lying glueball spectrum, some string tensions and some properties of topology and the running coupling for SU(N) lattice gauge theories in 3+1 dimensions. We do so for N = 2,3,...12, using lattice simulations with the Wilson plaquette action, and for glueball states in all the representations of the cubic rotation group, for both values of parity and charge conjugation. We extrapolate these results to the continuum limit of each theory and then to N=infinity. For a number of these states we are able to identify their continuum spins with very little ambiguity. We calculate the fundamental string tension and k=2 string tension and investigate the N dependence of the ratio. Using the string tension as the scale, we calculate the running of a lattice coupling and confirm that g(a)**2 varies as 1/N for constant physics as N->oo. We fit our calculated values of the string tension with the 3-loop beta-function, and extract a value for Lambda-MSbar, in units of the string tension, for all our values of N, including SU(3). We calculate the topological charge Q for N=2,..,6 where it fluctuates sufficiently for a plausible estimate of the continuum topological susceptibility. We also calculate the renormalisation of the lattice topological charge, ZQ(beta), for all our SU(N) gauge theories, using a standard definition of the charge, and we provide interpolating formulae, which may be useful in estimating the renormalisation of the lattice theta parameter. We provide quantitative results for how the topological charge `freezes' with decreasing lattice spacing and with increasing N, and show how we cicumvent this issue in our calculations.

Comparison of topological charge definitions in Lattice QCD

In this paper, we show a comparison of different definitions of the topological charge on the lattice. We concentrate on one small-volume ensemble with 2 flavours of dynamical, maximally twisted mass fermions and use three more ensembles to analyze the approach to the continuum limit. We investigate several fermionic and gluonic definitions. The former include the index of the overlap Dirac operator, the spectral flow of the Wilson--Dirac operator and the spectral projectors. For the latter, we take into account different discretizations of the topological charge operator and various smoothing schemes to filter out ultraviolet fluctuations: the gradient flow, stout smearing, APE smearing, HYP smearing and cooling. We show that it is possible to perturbatively match different smoothing schemes and provide a well-defined smoothing scale. We relate the smoothing parameters for cooling, stout and APE smearing to the gradient flow time $τ$. In the case of hypercubic smearing the matching is performed numerically. We investigate which conditions have to be met to obtain a valid definition of the topological charge and susceptibility and we argue that all valid definitions are highly correlated and allow good control over topology on the lattice.

Closed flux tubes in D=2+1 SU(N) gauge theories: dynamics and effective string description

We extend our earlier calculations of the spectrum of closed flux tubes in SU(N) gauge theories in 2+1 dimensions, with a focus on questions raised by recent theoretical progress on the effective string action of long flux tubes and the world-sheet action for flux tubes of moderate lengths. Our new calculations in SU(4) and SU(8) provide evidence that the leading O(1/l^gamma) non-universal correction to the flux tube ground state energy does indeed have a power gamma greater than or equal to 7. We perform a study in SU(2), where we can traverse the length at which the Nambu-Goto ground state becomes tachyonic, to obtain an all-N view of the spectrum. Our comparison of the k=2 flux tube excitation energies in SU(4) and SU(6) suggests that the massive world sheet excitation associated with the k=2 binding has a scale that knows about the group and hence the theory in the bulk, and we comment on the potential implications of world sheet massive modes for the bulk spectrum. We provide a quantitative analysis of the surprising (near-)orthogonality of flux tubes carrying flux in different SU(N) representations, which implies that their screening by gluons is highly suppressed even at small N.

Large mass hierarchies from strongly-coupled dynamics

Besides the Higgs particle discovered in 2012, with mass 125 GeV, recent LHC data show tentative signals for new resonances in diboson as well as diphoton searches at high center-of-mass energies (2 TeV and 750 GeV, respectively). If these signals are confirmed (or other new resonances are discovered at the TeV scale), the large hierarchies between masses of new bosons require a dynamical explanation. Motivated by these tentative signals of new physics, we investigate the theoretical possibility that large hierarchies in the masses of glueballs could arise dynamically in new strongly-coupled gauge theories extending the standard model of particle physics. We study lattice data on non-Abelian gauge theories in the (near-)conformal regime as well as a simple toy model in the context of gauge/gravity dualities. We focus our attention on the ratio $R$ between the mass of the lightest spin-2 and spin-0 resonances, that for technical reasons is a particularly convenient and clean observable to study. For models in which (non-perturbative) large anomalous dimensions arise dynamically, we show indications that this mass ratio can be large, with $R>5$. Moreover, our results suggest that $R$ might be related to universal properties of the IR fixed point. Our findings provide an interesting step towards understanding large mass ratios in the non-perturbative regime of quantum field theories with (near) IR conformal behaviour.

On the weak N-dependence of SO(N) and SU(N) gauge theories in 2+1 dimensions

We consider (continuum) mass ratios of the lightest `glueballs' as a function of N for SO(N) and SU(N) lattice gauge theories in D=2+1. We observe that the leading large N correction is usually sufficient to describe the N-dependence of SO(N.geq.3) and SU(N.geq.2), within the errors of the numerical calculation. Just as interesting is the fact that the coefficient of this correction almost invariably turns out to be anomalously small, for both SO(N) and SU(N). We point out that this can follow naturally from the strong constraints that one naively expects from the Lie algebra equivalence between certain SO(N) and SU(N') theories and the equivalence of SO(infinity) and SU(infinity). The same argument for a weak N-dependence can in principle apply to SU(N) and SO(N) gauge theories in D=3+1.

Recent results from SU(2) with one adjoint Dirac fermion

We present some results for SU(2) with one adjoint Dirac flavour from lattice studies. Data for the spectroscopy, the static potential, topological charge, and the anomalous dimension of the fermionic condensate are included. Our findings are found to be in- consistent with conventional confining behaviour, instead pointing tentatively towards a theory lying within or very near the onset of the conformal window, with an anomalous dimension of the fermionic condensate of almost 1. Implications of these findings on the building of models of strongly-interacting dynamics beyond the standard model are discussed.

The electric dipole moment of the neutron from $N_f=2+1+1$ twisted mass fermions

We extract the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) $ \vert \vec{d}_n \vert $ on configurations produced with $N_f=2+1+1$ twisted mass fermions with lattice spacing of $a \simeq 0.082$ fm and a light quark mass that corresponds to $M_π \simeq 373$ MeV. We do so by evaluating the $CP$-odd form factor $F_3$ for small values of the $CP$-violation parameter $θ$ in the limit of zero momentum transfer. This limit is extracted using the usual parametrization but in addition position space methods. The topological charge is computed via cooling and gradient flow using the Wilson, Symanzik tree-level improved and Iwasaki actions for smoothing. We obtain consistent results for all choices of smoothing procedures and methods to extract $F_3$ at zero momentum transfer. For the ensemble analyzed we find a value of nEDM of $\vert \vec{d}_n \vert / θ= -0.045(6)(1) {\rm e} \cdot {\rm fm}$.

Physical and cut-off effects of heavy sea quarks

We simulate a theory with two dynamical O($a$) improved Wilson quarks whose mass $M$ ranges from a factor eight up to a factor two below the charm quark mass and at three values of the lattice spacing ranging from 0.066 to 0.034 fm. This theory is a prototype to study the decoupling of heavy quarks. We measure the mass and cut-off dependence of ratios of gluonic observables defined from the Wilson flow or the static potential. The size of the 1/$M$ corrections can be determined and disentangled from the lattice artifacts. The difference with the pure gauge theory is at the percent level when two quarks with a mass of the charm quark are present.

The infrared regime of SU(2) with one adjoint Dirac flavour

SU(2) gauge theory with one Dirac flavour in the adjoint representation is investigated on a lattice. Initial results for the gluonic and mesonic spectrum, static potential from Wilson and Polyakov loops, and the anomalous dimension of the fermionic condensate from the Dirac mode number are presented. The results found are not consistent with conventional confining behaviour, instead tentatively pointing towards a theory lying within or very near the onset of the conformal window, with the anomalous dimension of the fermionic condensate in the range $0.9 \lesssim γ_* \lesssim 0.95$. The implications of our work for building a viable theory of strongly interacting dynamics beyond the standard model are discussed.

Closed flux tubes in higher representations and their string description in D=2+1 SU(N) gauge theories

We calculate, numerically, the low-lying spectrum of closed confining flux tubes that carry flux in different representations of SU(N). We do so for SU(6) at beta=171, where the calculated low-energy physics is very close to the continuum limit and, in many respects, also close to N=infinity. We focus on the adjoint, 84, 120, k=2A,2S and k=3A,3M,3S representations and provide evidence that the corresponding flux tubes, albeit mostly unstable, do in fact exist. We observe that the ground state of a flux tube with momentum along its axis appears to be well defined in all cases and is well described by the Nambu-Goto free string spectrum, all the way down to very small lengths, just as it is for flux tubes carrying fundamental flux. Excited states, however, typically show very much larger deviations from Nambu-Goto than the corresponding excitations of fundamental flux tubes and, indeed, cannot be extracted in many cases. We discuss whether what we are seeing here are separate stringy and massive modes or simply large corrections to energy levels that will become string-like at larger lengths.

First results for SU(2) Yang-Mills with one adjoint Dirac Fermion

We present a first exploratory study of SU(2) gauge theory with one Dirac flavour in the adjoint representation. We provide initial results for the spectroscopy and the anomalous dimension for the chiral condensate. Our investigation indicates that the theory is conformal or near-conformal, with an anomalous dimension of order one. A discussion of the relevance of these findings in relation to walking technicolor scenarios is also presented.

Stable and quasi-stable confining SU(N) strings in D=2+1

We investigate the low-lying spectrum of closed confining flux-tubes that wind around a spatial torus in D=2+1 and carry flux in different representations of SU(N). We focus on our most recent calculations for N=6 and β=171, where the calculated low-energy physics is very close to the continuum and large-N limits. We investigate the adjoint, 84, 120, k = 2A, 2S and k = 3A, 3M, 3S representations and show that the corresponding flux-tubes do exist. Similarly to the results for the fundamental representation, the ground state of a flux-tube with momentum along its axis appears to be well described by Nambu-Goto all the way down to very short tubes. In contrast, excited states have much larger deviations from Nambu-Goto. We discuss whether these states are non-string-like and associated with excitations of massive flux-tube modes.

Cutoff effects of heavy quark vacuum polarization at one-loop order

The charm-quark mass is typically not so far from the cutoff 1/a in lattice simulations. Its determinant may then potentially introduce large cutoff effects. We choose the O(a)-improved Wilson formulation and compute the vacuum polarization effects in two rather different observables at one-loop order. One is the quark-antiquark static force and the other the Schroedinger functional coupling; in addition we investigate two more quantities resulting from the latter. In all the cases the lattice artifacts due to the charm-quark are small when compared to the gluonic effects. This indicates that the inclusion of charm-quarks in dynamical fermion simulations is typically not a problem.

Closed flux tubes and their string description in D=2+1 SU(N) gauge theories

We carry out lattice calculations of the spectrum of confining flux tubes that wind around a spatial torus of variable length l, in 2+1 dimensions. We compare the energies of the lowest c.30 states to the free string Nambu-Goto model and to recent results on the universal properties of effective string actions. Our most useful calculations are in SU(6) at a small lattice spacing, which we check is very close to the large-N continuum limit. We find that the energies, En(l), are remarkably close to the predictions of the free string Nambu-Goto model, even well below the critical length at which the expansion of the Nambu-Goto energy in powers of 1/l diverges and the series needs to be resummed. Our analysis of the ground state supports the universality of the O(1/l) and the O(1/l^3) corrections to l.sigma, and we find that the deviations from Nambu-Goto at small l prefer a leading correction that is O(1/l^7), consistent with theoretical expectations. We find that the low-lying states that contain a single phonon excitation are also consistent with the leading O(1/l^7) correction dominating down to the smallest values of l. By contrast our analysis of the other light excited states clearly shows that for these states the corrections at smaller l resum to a much smaller effective power. Finally, and in contrast to our recent calculations in D=3+1, we find no evidence for the presence of any non-stringy states that could indicate the excitation of massive flux tube modes.

One-loop lattice artifacts of a dynamical charm quark

For a few observables in O(a) improved lattice QCD, we compute discretization effects arising from the vacuum polarization of a heavy quark at one-loop order. In particular, the force between static quarks, the running coupling in the Schrodinger functional and a related quantity, {\bar \upsilon}, are considered. Results show that the cutoff effects of a dynamical charm quark are typically smaller than those present in the pure gauge theory. This perturbative result is a good indication that dynamical charm quarks are feasible already now.

The spectrum of closed loops of fundamental flux in D = 3+1 SU(N) gauge theories

We study the spectrum of closed flux tubes in four dimensional SU(N) gauge theories. We do so by calculating the energies of the low lying states with the variational technique (whose basis consists of about ~700 operators). We study states of different values of angular momentum, transversal parity, longitudinal parity, and longitudinal momentum, and compare the results with effective string theories (ESTs) such as the Nambu-Goto (NG) model. Most of our states agree very well with the Nambu-Goto predictions and since most of our flux-tubes' lengths are outside the radius of convergence of the ESTs, then for some states it is only the NG that predicts the spectrum well. This strongly suggests that the ESTs can be re-summed. Nonetheless, there are a few states (all with negative parity and in the same representation of the lattice rotation group) that exhibit large deviations from the NG predictions; these deviations might provide clues to the nature of the effective string theory describing the large-N QCD string.

Spectrum of closed k-strings in D=2+1

We calculate the excitation spectrumof closed k-strings in 2+1 dimensional SU(N) gauge theories for N = 4, 5 and k = 2. Our results demonstrate that the low-lying spectrum of the k = 2 string falls into sectors that belong to nearly pure antisymmetric and symmetric representations, showing that k-strings know not only about the centre of the group, but also about the full group. We also observe that the lightest states in each irreducible representation are consistent with what one would expect from an effective string theory that belongs to the same bosonic universality class (Nambu-Goto) as the fundamental string. We find that the corrections compared to the free string theory are of O(1), in striking contrast to the very small correction observed for the fundamental string. We also observe unbound w = 2 states.
