Geometry of Entanglement

In the context of the surface-state correspondence we propose the geodesic curvature of a convex curve as a local measure of factorization of the dual CFT state. Its integral will be interpreted as computing the bipartite entanglement among degrees of freedom with support on the chosen domain. We will derive results through application of the Gauss-Bonnet theorem and show quantitative agreement with computations using the MERA tensor network and the formalism of entanglement density.

A perturbative study on the analytic continuation for generalized gravitational entropy

We study the analytic continuation used by Lewkowycz and Maldacena to prove the Ryu-Takayanagi formula for entanglement entropy, which is the holographic dual of the trace of the $β$-power of the time evolution operator when $β\in \mathbb{R}$. This will be done perturbatively by using a weakly time dependent Hamiltonian, corresponding to a small shift of the dual static background. Depending on the periodicity we impose on the gravitational solution, we consider two different possibilities and compare the associated entropies with the results obtained through a minimal area computation. To our surprise we discover that, at first order, both choices correctly reproduce the associated entanglement entropy. Furthermore we find unexpected divergent contributions that we have to discard in order to fit the minimal area computation, and an additional requirement that needs to be imposed on the $β$ dependence on the metric.

Dynamics of Entanglement Entropy from Einstein Equation

We study the dynamics of entanglement entropy for weakly excited states in conformal field theories by using the AdS/CFT. This is aimed at a first step to find a counterpart of Einstein equation in the CFT language. In particular, we point out that the entanglement entropy satisfies differential equations which directly correspond to the Einstein equation in several setups of AdS/CFT. We also define a quantity called entanglement density in higher dimensional field theories and study its dynamical property for weakly excited states in conformal field theories.

On recursion relations in topological string theory

We discuss a link between the topological recursion relations derived algebraically by Witten and the holomorphic anomaly equation of Bershadsky, Cecotti, Ooguri and Vafa. This is obtained through the definition of an operator ${\cal{W}}_s$ that reproduces the recursion relations for topological string theory coupled to worldsheet gravity a la BCOV. This operator is contained inside an algebra that generalizes the tt* equations and whose direct consequence is the holomorphic anomaly equation itself.

Double genus expansion for general $Ω$ background

We will show how the refined holomorphic anomaly equation obeyed by the Nekrasov partition function at generic $ε_1,ε_2$ values becomes compatible, in a certain two parameters expansion, with the assumption that both parameters are associated to genus counting. The underlying worldsheet theory will be analysed and constrained in various ways, and we will provide both physical interpretation and some alternative evidence for this model. Finally we will use the Gopakumar - Vafa formulation for the refined topological string in order to give a more quantitative description.

Taming open/closed string duality with a Losev trick

A target space string field theory formulation for open and closed B-model is provided by giving a Batalin-Vilkovisky quantization of the holomorphic Chern-Simons theory with off-shell gravity background. The target space expression for the coefficients of the holomorphic anomaly equation for open strings are obtained. Furthermore, open/closed string duality is proved from a judicious integration over the open string fields. In particular, by restriction to the case of independence on continuous open moduli, the shift formulas of [7] are reproduced and shown therefore to encode the data of a closed string dual.

Topics in Open Topological Strings

This thesis is based on some selected topics in open topological string theory which I have worked on during my Ph.D. It comprises an introductory part where I have focused on the points most needed for the later chapters, trading completeness for conciseness and clarity. Then, following [12], we discuss tadpole cancellation for topological strings where we mainly show how its implementation is needed for ensuring the same "odd" moduli decoupling encountered in the closed theory. Next we move to analyse how the open and closed effective field theories for the B model interact writing the complete Lagrangian. We first check it deriving some already known tree level amplitudes in term of target space quantities, and then we extend the recipe to new results; later we implement open closed duality from a target field theory perspective. This last subject is also analysed from a worldsheet point of view extending the analysis of [13]. Some ideas for future research are briefly reported.
