Towards replacing detector simulation with heterogeneous GNNs in flavour physics analyses

Driven by the increasing volume of recorded data, the demand for simulation from experiments based at the Large Hadron Collider will rise sharply in the coming years. Addressing this demand solely with existing computationally intensive workflows is not feasible. This paper introduces a new fast simulation tool designed to address this demand at the LHCb experiment. This tool emulates the detector response to arbitrary multibody decay topologies at LHCb. Rather than memorising specific decay channels, the model learns generalisable patterns within the response, allowing it to interpolate to channels not present in the training data. Novel heterogeneous graph neural network architectures are employed that are designed to embed the physical characteristics of the task directly into the network structure. We demonstrate the performance of the tool across a range of decay topologies, showing the networks can correctly model the relationships between complex variables. The architectures and methods presented are generic and could readily be adapted to emulate workflows at other simulation-intensive particle physics experiments.

COCTEAU: an Empathy-Based Tool for Decision-Making

Traditional approaches to data-informed policymaking are often tailored to specific contexts and lack strong citizen involvement and collaboration, which are required to design sustainable policies. We argue the importance of empathy-based methods in the policymaking domain given the successes in diverse settings, such as healthcare and education. In this paper, we introduce COCTEAU (Co-Creating The European Union), a novel framework built on the combination of empathy and gamification to create a tool aimed at strengthening interactions between citizens and policy-makers. We describe our design process and our concrete implementation, which has already undergone preliminary assessments with different stakeholders. Moreover, we briefly report pilot results from the assessment. Finally, we describe the structure and goals of our demonstration regarding the newfound formats and organizational aspects of academic conferences.

Empathy-Centric Design At Scale

EmpathiCH aims at bringing together and blend different expertise to develop new research agenda in the context of "Empathy-Centric Design at Scale". The main research question is to investigate how new technologies can contribute to the elicitation of empathy across and within multiple stakeholders at scale; and how empathy can be used to design solutions to societal problems that are not only effective but also balanced, inclusive, and aware of their effect on society. Through presentations, participatory sessions, and a living experiment -- where data about the peoples' interactions is collected throughout the event -- we aim to make this workshop the ideal venue to foster collaboration, build networks, and shape the future direction of "Empathy-Centric Design at Scale".

Empowering Local Communities Using Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly used to analyze large amounts of data in various practices, such as object recognition. We are specifically interested in using AI-powered systems to engage local communities in developing plans or solutions for pressing societal and environmental concerns. Such local contexts often involve multiple stakeholders with different and even contradictory agendas, resulting in mismatched expectations of these systems' behaviors and desired outcomes. There is a need to investigate if AI models and pipelines can work as expected in different contexts through co-creation and field deployment. Based on case studies in co-creating AI-powered systems with local people, we explain challenges that require more attention and provide viable paths to bridge AI research with citizen needs. We advocate for developing new collaboration approaches and mindsets that are needed to co-create AI-powered systems in multi-stakeholder contexts to address local concerns.

BPS Wilson loops in $\mathcal N \geq 2$ superconformal Chern-Simons-matter theories

In $\mathcal N \geq 2$ superconformal Chern-Simons-matter theories we construct the infinite family of Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) Wilson loops featured by constant parametric couplings to scalar and fermion matter, including both line Wilson loops in Minkowski spacetime and circle Wilson loops in Euclidean space. We find that the connection of the most general BPS Wilson loop cannot be decomposed in terms of double-node connections. Moreover, if the quiver contains triangles, it cannot be interpreted as a supermatrix inside a superalgebra. However, for particular choices of the parameters it reduces to the well-known connections of 1/6 BPS Wilson loops in Aharony-Bergman-Jafferis-Maldacena (ABJM) theory and 1/4 BPS Wilson loops in $\mathcal N = 4$ orbifold ABJM theory. In the particular case of $\mathcal N = 2$ orbifold ABJM theory we identify the gravity duals of a subset of operators. We investigate the cohomological equivalence of fermionic and bosonic BPS Wilson loops at quantum level by studying their expectation values, and find strong evidence that the cohomological equivalence holds quantum mechanically, at framing one. Finally, we discuss a stronger formulation of the cohomological equivalence, which implies non-trivial identities for correlation functions of composite operators in the defect CFT defined on the Wilson contour and allows to make novel predictions on the corresponding unknown integrals that call for a confirmation.

Prospects for disentangling long- and short-distance effects in the decays $B\to K^* μ^+μ^-$

Theory uncertainties on non-local hadronic effects limit the New Physics discovery potential of the rare decays $B\to K^*μ^+μ^-$. We investigate prospects to disentangle New Physics effects in the short-distance coefficients from these effects. Our approach makes use of an event-by-event amplitude analysis, and relies on the state of the art parametrisation of the non-local contributions. We find that non-standard effects in the short-distance coefficients can be successfully disentangled from non-local hadronic effects. The impact of the truncation on the parametrisation of non-local contributions to the Wilson coefficients are for the first time systematically examined and prospects for its precise determination are discussed. We find that physical observables are unaffected by these uncertainties. Compared to other methods, our approach provides for a more precise extraction of the angular observables from data.

Framing and localization in Chern-Simons theories with matter

Supersymmetric localization provides exact results that should match QFT computations in some regularization scheme. The agreement is particularly subtle in three dimensions where complex answers from localization procedure sometimes arise. We investigate this problem by studying the expectation value of the 1/6 BPS Wilson loop in planar ABJ(M) theory at three loops in perturbation theory. We reproduce the corresponding term in the localization result and argue that it originates entirely from a non-trivial framing of the circular contour. Contrary to pure Chern-Simons theory, we point out that for ABJ(M) the framing phase is a non-trivial function of the couplings and that it potentially receives contributions from vertex-like diagrams. Finally, we briefly discuss the intimate link between the exact framing factor and the Bremsstrahlung function of the 1/2-BPS cusp.

The quantum 1/2 BPS Wilson loop in ${\cal N}=4$ Chern-Simons-matter theories

In three dimensional ${\cal N}=4$ Chern-Simons-matter theories two independent fermionic Wilson loop operators can be defined, which preserve half of the supersymmetry charges and are cohomologically equivalent at classical level. We compute their three-loop expectation value in a convenient color sector and prove that the degeneracy is uplifted by quantum corrections. We expand the matrix model prediction in the same regime and by comparison we conclude that the quantum 1/2 BPS Wilson loop is the average of the two operators. We provide an all-loop argument to support this claim at any order. As a by-product, we identify the localization result at three loops as a correction to the framing factor induced by matter interactions. Finally, we comment on the quantum properties of the non-1/2 BPS Wilson loop operator defined as the difference of the two fermionic ones.

Four-point amplitudes in $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCQCD

We compute four-point scattering amplitudes in $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCQCD with general external matter configurations using $\mathcal{N}=1$ superspace Feynman diagrams, at one loop in the general case and up to two loops in the fundamental sector. In the pure adjoint sector at one loop we confirm exact agreement with the corresponding amplitudes in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory, supporting the idea that a closed subsector of the SCQCD might be exactly integrable. External matter in the fundamental representation breaks dual conformal invariance already at one loop and also the maximum transcendentality principle at two loops.

On the Amplitude/Wilson Loop duality in $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCQCD

We compute the four-point amplitude with external adjoint particles in $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCQCD at two loops using $\mathcal{N}=1$ superspace Feynman diagrams, extending the results of arXiv:1406.7283. We consider the diagrammatic difference with the corresponding process of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM finding a non vanishing result, which is a non trivial function of the kinematic variables. This demonstrates that in $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCQCD, even in the sector with external particles in the vector multiplet, the amplitude/Wilson loop duality is inevitably broken at two loops.

Probing Wilson loops in ${\cal N}=4$ Chern-Simons-matter theories at weak coupling

For three-dimensional ${\cal N}=4$ super Chern-Simons-matter theories associated to necklace quivers $U(N_0) \times U(N_1) \times \cdots U(N_{2r-1}) $, we study at quantum level the two kinds of 1/2 BPS Wilson loop operators recently introduced in arXiv:1506.07614. We perform a two-loop evaluation and find the same result for the two kinds of operators, so moving to higher loops a possible quantum uplift of the classical degeneracy. We also compute the 1/4 BPS bosonic Wilson loop and discuss the quantum version of the cohomological equivalence between fermionic and bosonic Wilson loops. We compare the perturbative result with the Matrix Model prediction and find perfect matching, after identification and remotion of a suitable framing factor. Finally, we discuss the potential appearance of three-loop contributions that might break the classical degeneracy and briefly analyse possible implications on the BPS nature of these operators.

Search for a light dark sector particle at LHCb

A search is presented for a hidden-sector boson, $χ$, produced in the decay $B^0 \rightarrow K^* (892)^0 χ$, with $K^* (892)^0 \rightarrow K^+ π^-$ and $χ\rightarrow μ^+ μ^-$ . The search is performed using a $pp$-collision data sample collected at $\sqrt{s}=7$ and 8 TeV with the LHCb detector, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 1 and 2 fb$^{-1}$ respectively. No significant signal is observed in the mass range $214 \le m_χ\le 4350$ MeV, and upper limits are placed on the branching fraction product $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \rightarrow K^* (892)^0 χ) \times \mathcal{B}(χ\rightarrow μ^+ μ^- )$ as a function of the mass and lifetime of the $χ$ boson. These limits place the most stringent constraints to date on many theories that predict the existence of additional low-mass dark bosons.

ABJM amplitudes and WL at finite N

We evaluate ABJM observables at two loops, for any value of the rank N of the gauge group. We compute the color subleading contributions to the four-point scattering amplitude in ABJM at two loops. Contrary to the four dimensional case, IR divergent N-subleading contributions are proportional to leading poles in the regularization parameter. We then exploit the non-planar calculation for the amplitude to derive an expression for the two-loop Sudakov form factor at any N. In the planar limit the result coincides with the one recently obtained in literature by using Feynman diagrams and unitarity. Finally, we analyze the subleading contributions to the light-like four-cusps Wilson loop and interpret the result in terms of the non-abelian exponentiation theorem. All these perturbative results satisfy the uniform transcendentality principle, hinting at its validity in ABJM beyond the planar limit.

The Leading Order Dressing Phase in ABJM Theory

We study the planar asymptotic dilatation operator of ABJM theory in the SU(2) x SU(2) sector up to eight loops. Combining Bethe Ansatz techniques and N = 2 superspace methods, we are able to fix all the coefficients appearing in the maximal-reshuffling terms. In particular, we can directly compute from Feynman diagrams the leading order coefficient of the dressing phase and find an agreement with the relation conjectured by Gromov and Vieira between the ABJM and N = 4 SYM phase factor.

One Loop Amplitudes In ABJM

For three dimensional N=6 superconformal field theories we compute one-loop scattering amplitudes for any number of external particles. We focus on a particular subsector of N=2 invariant superamplitudes for which the ordinary perturbative evaluation becomes very easy. The result we obtain is in general non-vanishing. For six external particles our findings are sufficient for determining the complete expression of the N=6 superamplitude at this order. We discuss the symmetries of the result and its anomalous variation under superconformal generators.

From Correlators to Wilson Loops in Chern-Simons Matter Theories

We study n-point correlation functions for chiral primary operators in three dimensional supersymmetric Chern-Simons matter theories. Our analysis is carried on in N=2 superspace and covers N=2,3 supersymmetric CFT's, the N=6 ABJM and the N=8 BLG models. In the limit where the positions of adjacent operators become light-like, we find that the one-loop n-point correlator divided by its tree level expression coincides with a light-like n-polygon Wilson loop. Remarkably, the result can be simply expressed as a linear combination of five dimensional two-mass easy boxes. We manage to evaluate the integrals analytically and find a vanishing result, in agreement with previous findings for Wilson loops.

Scattering Amplitudes/Wilson Loop Duality In ABJM Theory

For N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons-matter theories in three dimensions, by a direct superspace Feynman diagram approach, we compute the two-loop four-point scattering amplitude with external chiral matter fields. We find that the result is in perfect agreement with the two-loop result for a light-like four-polygon Wilson loop. This is a nontrivial evidence of the scattering amplitudes/Wilson loop duality in three dimensions. Moreover, both the IR divergent and the finite parts of our two-loop result agree with a BDS-like ansatz for all-loop amplitudes where the scaling function is given in terms of the N=4 SYM one, according to the conjectured Bethe equations for ABJM. Consequently, we are able to make a prediction for the four-loop correction to the amplitude. We also discuss the dual conformal invariance of the two-loop result.

Scattering in ABJ theories

We study the correspondence between scattering amplitudes and Wilson loops in three-dimensional Chern-Simons matter theories. In particular, using N=2 superspace formalism, we compute at one loop the whole spectrum of four-point superamplitudes for generic N>=2 supersymmetric theories and find a vanishing result for N=6 ABJ(M) and N=8 BLG models. This restricts the possible range of theories for which Wilson loops/scattering amplitudes duality might work. At two loops, we present the computation of the four-point ABJ scattering amplitude for external chiral superfields. Extending the known result for the ABJM Wilson loop to the ABJ case we find perfect agreement. We also discuss the dual conformal invariance of our results and the relationship between the Feynman diagram computation and unitarity methods. While for the ABJM theory dual conformally invariant integrals exactly reproduce the amplitude, for the ABJ case this happens only up to a residual constant depending on the parity-violating parameter. Finally we propose a BDS-like exponentiation for the amplitude based on an analogy with the four-dimensional N=4 SYM case, and discuss its strong coupling dual counterpart.

Gauge Fields, Membranes and Subdeterminant Vector Models

We present a class of classically marginal N-vector models in d=4 and d=3, whose scalar potentials can be written as subdeterminants of symmetric matrices. The d=3 case is a generalization of the scalar Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson (BLG) model. Using the Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation we calculate their effective potentials which exhibit intriguing large-N scaling behaviors. We comment on the relevance of our models to strings, membranes and also to a class of novel spin systems that are based on ternary commutation relations.

On the infrared behaviour of 3d Chern-Simons theories in N=2 superspace

We discuss the problem of infrared divergences in the N=2 superspace approach to classically marginal three-dimensional Chern-Simons-matter theories. Considering the specific case of ABJM theory, we describe the origin of such divergences and offer a prescription to eliminate them by introducing non-trivial gauge-fixing terms in the action. We also comment on the extension of our procedure to higher loop order and to general three-dimensional Chern-Simons-matter models.

Stochastic Quantization and AdS/CFT

We argue that there is a relationship between stochastic quantization and AdS/CFT, and we present an explicit calculation to support our claim. In particular, we show that a conformally coupled scalar with phi4 interaction on AdS4 is related, via stochastic quantization as well as via AdS/CFT, to a massless scalar with phi6 interaction in 3d. We show that our results have an underlying geometric origin, which might help to elucidate further the proposed relationship between stochastic quantization and holography.
