Perturbative PDF of the total magnetization of the 4D Ising model

We compute, at one loop in perturbation theory, the probability density function of the total magnetization $M$ of the Ising model on the 4-torus and the 4-sphere. We develop a single perturbative expansion that is valid in the symmetric phase as well as the broken symmetry phase, provided that the correlation length is large compared to the system size $L$. We find that, at the critical point, for large system size in lattice units, the PDF approaches $p(M)\sim \exp(-f(L) M^4)$. Consequently, the critical value of the Binder cumulant of the total magnetization is $U = 1 - \frac{4\,Γ(5/4)^2}{3\,Γ(3/4)^2}$. We validate our results by comparison with Monte Carlo simulation.

Confinement transition to density wave order in metallic doped spin liquids

Insulating quantum spin liquids can undergo a confinement transition to a valence bond solid state via the condensation of topological excitations of the associated gauge theory. We extend the theory of such transitions to fractionalized Fermi liquids (FL*): these are metallic doped spin liquids in which the Fermi surfaces only have gauge neutral quasiparticles. Using insights from a duality transform on a doped quantum dimer model for the U(1)-FL* state, we show that projective symmetry group of the theory of the topological excitations remains unmodified, but the Fermi surfaces can lead to additional frustrating interactions. We propose a theory for the confinement transition of $\mathbb{Z}_2$-FL* states via the condensation of visons. A variety of confining, incommensurate density wave states are possible, including some that are similar to the incommensurate $d$-form factor density wave order observed in several recent experiments on the cuprate superconductors.

A quantum dimer model for the pseudogap metal

We propose a quantum dimer model for the metallic state of the hole-doped cuprates at low hole density, $p$. The Hilbert space is spanned by spinless, neutral, bosonic dimers and spin $S=1/2$, charge $+e$ fermionic dimers. The model realizes a `fractionalized Fermi liquid' with no symmetry-breaking and small hole pocket Fermi surfaces enclosing a total area determined by $p$. Exact diagonalization, on lattices of sizes up to $8 \times 8$, shows anisotropic quasiparticle residue around the pocket Fermi surfaces. We discuss the relationship to experiments.

Some results on the shape dependence of entanglement and Rényi entropies

We study how the universal contribution to entanglement entropy in a conformal field theory depends on the entangling region. We show that for a deformed sphere the variation of the universal contribution is quadratic in the deformation amplitude. We generalize these results for Rényi entropies. We obtain an explicit expression for the second order variation of entanglement entropy in the case of a deformed circle in a three dimensional CFT with a gravity dual. For the same system, we also consider an elliptic entangling region and determine numerically the entanglement entropy as a function of the aspect ratio of the ellipse. Based on these three-dimensional results and Solodukhin's formula in four dimensions, we conjecture that the sphere minimizes the universal contribution to entanglement entropy in all dimensions.

Auxiliary-boson and DMFT studies of bond ordering instabilities of t-J-V models on the square lattice

We examine the influence of strong on-site Coulomb interactions on instabilities of the metallic state on the square lattice to general forms of bond order. The Mott correlations are accounted for by the auxiliary-boson method, and by dynamical mean field theory calculations, complementing our recent work (arXiv:1402.4807) using Gutzwiller projected variational wavefunctions. By the present methods, we find that the on-site Mott correlations do not significantly modify the structure of the bond ordering instabilities which preserve time-reversal symmetry, but they do enhance the instability towards time-reversal symmetry breaking "staggered flux" states.

Bond order instabilities in a correlated two-dimensional metal

Motivated by recent experimental evidence of charge order in the pseudogap phase of cuprates, we perform a variational analysis of charge-neutral, spin-singlet ordering in metals on the square lattice, using a wavefunction with double occupancy projected out. We examine ordering with and without time-reversal symmetry, with arbitrary wavevector and tunable form factor. Depending on parameters, we find d-wave bond density wave ordering with wavevector either parallel to the lattice generators or diagonally oriented, or a ground state which carries a time reversal-breaking pattern of spontaneous currents.

Comment on "Symmetry classification of bond order parameters in cuprates"

We review the transformation of bond order waves with non-trivial form factors under time-reversal and point group symmetry. Zeyher (arXiv:1406.6846) argues that certain d-form factor states must be "flux states", but this does not apply to the form factors as defined by us (arXiv:1402.4807). The latter definitions were used in the experimental detection (arXiv:1402.5415, arXiv:1404.0362).

Connecting high-field quantum oscillations to zero-field electron spectral functions in the underdoped cuprates

The central puzzle of the cuprate superconductors at low hole density is the nature of the pseudogap regime. It has a number of seemingly distinct experimental signatures: a suppression of the paramagnetic spin susceptibility at high temperatures, low energy electronic excitations that extend over arcs in the Brillouin zone, X-ray detection of charge density wave order at intermediate temperatures, and quantum oscillations at high magnetic fields and low temperatures. We show that a model of competing charge density wave and superconducting orders provides a unified description of the intermediate and low temperature regimes. We treat quantum oscillations at high field beyond semiclassical approximations, and find clear and robust signatures of an electron pocket compatible with existing observations; we also predict oscillations due to additional hole pockets. In the zero field and intermediate temperature regime, we compute the electronic spectrum in the presence of thermally fluctuating charge density and superconducting orders. Our results are compatible with experimental trends.

Spectral function of a localized fermion coupled to the Wilson-Fisher conformal field theory

We describe the dynamics of a single fermion in a dispersionless band coupled to the 2+1 dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) describing the quantum phase transition of a bosonic order parameter with N components. The fermionic spectral functions are expected to apply to the vicinity of quantum critical points in two-dimensional metals over an intermediate temperature regime where the Landau damping of the order parameter can be neglected. Some of our results are obtained by a mapping to an auxiliary problem of a CFT containing a defect line with an external field which locally breaks the global O(N) symmetry.

Loop current order and d-wave superconductivity: some observable consequences

Loop current order has been reported in the pseudogap regime of a few cuprate systems in polarized neutron scattering experiments. Here we study several observable consequences of such order in the d-wave superconducting state at low T. The symmetries of the loop order removes degeneracy between momenta k and -k. Consequently there is a remnant Bogoliubov Fermi surface in the superconducting state. Bounds on the possible existence of such a Fermi surface may be placed from existing data. Detecting such a Fermi surface will be a very useful confirmation of the existence of loop order in various cuprates. We show through explicit calculations that the Bogoliubov Fermi surface does not display quantum oscillations in a magnetic field consistent with natural expectations. Inclusion of a field induced spin stripe order reconstructs the Bogoliubov Fermi surface to develop pockets which then show quantum oscillations in the superconducting state. Difficulties with interpreting quantum oscillation data in the cuprates along these lines are pointed out.

Holographic evolution of the mutual information

We compute the time evolution of the mutual information in out of equilibrium quantum systems whose gravity duals are Vaidya spacetimes in three and four dimensions, which describe the formation of a black hole through the collapse of null dust. We find the holographic mutual information to be non monotonic in time and always monogamous in the ranges explored. We also find that there is a region in the configuration space where it vanishes at all times. We show that the null energy condition is a necessary condition for both the strong subadditivity of the holographic entanglement entropy and the monogamy of the holographic mutual information.

Double-trace deformations, holography and the c-conjecture

A double-trace deformation is the simplest perturbation of a conformal field theory that has a gravity dual. In this paper we review the existing results for the case in which the deformation is composed from a scalar operator, and extend them to the case of a spinor operator. In particular we check the validity of the c-conjecture along the RG flow induced by the deformation, using both Cardy's c-function and the recent proposal by Myers and Sinha of a c-function from entanglement entropy.
