Modified current induced domain wall motion in GaMnAs nanowire

We report on current induced domain wall propagation in a patterned GaMnAs microwire with perpendicular magnetization. An unexpected slowing down of the propagation velocity has been found when the moving domain wall extends over only half of the width of the wire. This slowing down is related to the elongation of a longitudinal wall along the axis of the wire. By using an energy balance argument, the expected theoretical dependence of the velocity change has been calculated and compared with the experimental results. According to this, the energy associated to the longitudinal domain wall should change when a current passes through the wire. These results provide possible evidence of transverse spin diffusion along a longitudinal domain wall.

Dynamics of Dzyaloshinskii domain walls in ultrathin magnetic films

We explore a new type of domain wall structure in ultrathin films with perpendicular anisotropy, that is influenced by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction due to the adjacent layers. This study is performed by numerical and analytical micromagnetics. We show that these walls can behave like Neel walls with very high stability, moving in stationary conditions at large velocities under large fields. We discuss the relevance of such walls, that we propose to call Dzyaloshinskii domain walls, for current-driven domain wall motion under the spin Hall effect.

On the magnetization textures in NiPd nanostructures

We have observed peculiar magnetization textures in Ni$_{80}$Pd$_{20}$ nanostructures using three different imaging techniques: magnetic force microscopy, photoemission electron microscopy under polarized X-ray absorption, and scanning electron microscopy with polarization analysis. The appearances of diamond-like domains with strong lateral charges and of weak stripe structures bring into evidence the presence of both a transverse and a perpendicular anisotropy in these nanostrips. This anisotropy is seen to reinforce as temperature decreases, as testified by a simplified domain structure at 150 K. A thermal stress relaxation model is proposed to account for these observations. Elastic calculations coupled to micromagnetic simulations support qualitatively this model.

Electrical switching of vortex core in a magnetic disk

A magnetic vortex is a curling magnetic structure realized in a ferromagnetic disk, which is a promising candidate of a memory cell for future nonvolatile data storage devices. Thus, understanding of the stability and dynamical behaviour of the magnetic vortex is a major requirement for developing magnetic data storage technology. Since the experimental proof of the existence of a nanometre-scale core with out-of-plane magnetisation in the magnetic vortex, the dynamics of a vortex has been investigated intensively. However, the way to electrically control the core magnetisation, which is a key for constructing a vortex core memory, has been lacking. Here, we demonstrate the electrical switching of the core magnetisation by utilizing the current-driven resonant dynamics of the vortex; the core switching is triggered by a strong dynamic field which is produced locally by a rotational core motion at a high speed of several hundred m/s. Efficient switching of the vortex core without magnetic field application is achieved thanks to resonance. This opens up the potentiality of a simple magnetic disk as a building block for spintronic devices like a memory cell where the bit data is stored as the direction of the nanometre-scale core magnetisation.

Spin transfer torque in continuous textures: semiclassical Boltzmann approach

We consider a microscopic model of itinerant electrons coupled via ferromagnetic exchange to a local magnetization whose direction vector n(r,t) varies in space and time. We assume that to first order in the spatial gradient and time derivative of n(r,t) the magnetization distribution function f(p,r,t) of itinerant electrons has the Ansatz form: f(p,r,t)=f_{parallel}(p)n(r,t)+ f_{1 r}(p) n ^ nabla_{r} n+f_{2 r}(p) nabla_{r} n+ f_{1 t}(p) n ^ partial_t n+f_{2 t}(p) partial_t n. Using then the Landau-Sillin equations of motion approach we derive explicit forms for the components f_{parallel}(p), f_{1 r}(p), f_{2 r}(p), f_{1 t}(p) and f_{2 t}(p) in "equilibrum" and in out of equilibrum situations for: (i) no scattering by impurities, (ii) spin conserving scattering and (iii) spin non-conserving scattering. The back action on the localized electron magnetization from the out of equilibrum part of the two components f_{1 r}, f_{2 r} constitutes the two spin transfer torque terms.
