From Byzantine Replication to Blockchain: Consensus is only the Beginning

The popularization of blockchains leads to a resurgence of interest in Byzantine Fault-Tolerant (BFT) state machine replication protocols. However, much of the work on this topic focuses on the underlying consensus protocols, with emphasis on their lack of scalability, leaving other subtle limitations unaddressed. These limitations are related to the effects of maintaining a durable blockchain instead of a write-ahead log and the requirement for reconfiguring the set of replicas in a decentralized way. We demonstrate these limitations using a digital coin blockchain application and BFT-SMaRt, a popular BFT replication library. We show how they can be addressed both at a conceptual level, in a protocol-agnostic way, and by implementing SMaRtChain, a blockchain platform based on BFT-SMaRt. SMaRtChain improves the performance of our digital coin application by a factor of eight when compared with a naive implementation on top of BFT-SMaRt. Moreover, SMaRtChain achieves a throughput $8\times$ and $33\times$ better than Tendermint and Hyperledger Fabric, respectively, when ensuring strong durability on its blockchain.

Unramified covers and branes on the Hitchin system

We study the locus of the moduli space of Higgs bundles on a curve given by those Higgs bundles obtained by pushforward under an unramified cover. We equip these loci with a hyperholomorphic bundle so that they can be viewed as BBB-branes, and we introduce corresponding BAA-branes which can be described via Hecke modifications. We then show how these branes are naturally dual via explicit Fourier--Mukai transform, where we recall that the structure group $\mathrm{GL}(n,\mathbb{C})$ is Langlands self dual. It is noteworthy that these branes lie over the singular locus of the Hitchin fibration. As a particular case, our construction describes the behaviour under mirror symmetry of the fixed loci for the action of tensorization by a line bundle of order $n$. These loci play a key role in the work of Hausel and Thaddeus on topological mirror symmetry for Higgs moduli spaces.

Topology of Moduli Spaces of Free Group Representations in Real Reductive Groups

Let $G$ be a real reductive algebraic group with maximal compact subgroup $K$, and let $F_r$ be a rank $r$ free group. We show that the space of closed orbits in $\mathrm{Hom}(F_r,G)/G$ admits a strong deformation retraction to the orbit space $\mathrm{Hom}(F_r,K)/K$. In particular, all such spaces have the same homotopy type. We compute the Poincaré polynomials of these spaces for some low rank groups $G$, such as $\mathrm{Sp}(4,\mathbb{R})$ and $\mathrm{U}(2,2)$. We also compare these real moduli spaces to the real points of the corresponding complex moduli spaces, and describe the geometry of many examples.

Rank two quadratic pairs and surface group representations

Let $X$ be a compact Riemann surface. A quadratic pair on $X$ consists of a holomorphic vector bundle with a quadratic form which takes values in fixed line bundle. We show that the moduli spaces of quadratic pairs of rank 2 are connected under some constraints on their topological invariants. As an application of our results we determine the connected components of the $\mathrm{SO}_0(2,3)$-character variety of $X$.
