Seesaw, coherence and neutrino oscillations

We present a prescription for consistently constructing non-Fock coherent flavour neutrino states within the framework of the seesaw mechanism, and establish that the physical vacuum of massive neutrinos is a condensate of Standard Model massless neutrino states. The coherent states, involving a finite number of massive states, are derived by constructing their creation operator. Such a construction is the key requirement so that the oscillations of particles indeed occur. We comment on the inherent non-unitarity of the oscillation probability induced by the requirement of coherence.

Can Oscillating Neutrino States Be Formulated Universally?

A standing problem in neutrino physics is the consistent and universal definition of oscillating neutrino states as coherent superpositions of massive neutrino states. This problem is solved in a quantum field theoretical framework of neutrino mixing developed in analogy with the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model for the dynamical generation of nucleon masses. The massive neutrino states are Bogoliubov quasiparticles and their vacuum is a condensate of "Cooper pairs" of massless flavour neutrinos. Their superpositions as oscillating neutrino states have intrinsic quantum coherence by construction. In this quantization framework, the standard phenomenological flavour neutrino states and oscillation probability formula are validated in the ultrarelativistic approximation.

Comment on the Comment on the paper "Can oscillating neutrino states be formulated universally?''

Recently, our work regarding the definition of oscillating neutrino states in Eur. Phys. J. C 80: 68 (2020), arxiv:1902.01232 [hep-ph] has been commented upon in arXiv:2004.04739 [hep-ph]. In this note we show that, contrary to the claim in the comment, our above-mentioned work cannot be reproduced in the scheme of the so-called flavour Fock space approach described in the comment. Moreover, we prove explicitly that a flavour Fock space cannot exist in a model with massive mixed neutrinos. If the flavour Fock space scheme were viable, it would necessarily lead, as a consequence of Coleman's theorem, to the flavour number invariance of the Hamiltonian of mixed neutrino fields, while the Hamiltonian is by construction flavour number violating. Quod est absurdum.

Intrinsic quantum coherence in particle oscillations

The quantum field theoretical description of coherence in the oscillations of particles, especially neutrinos, is a standing problem in particle physics. In this talk, several inconsistencies of the standard approach to particle oscillations will be explained, and how they are resolved in a process-independent manner, by a novel approach inspired by the Bardeen--Cooper--Schrieffer theory of superconductivity and the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. The formalism leads to corrections to the neutrino oscillation probability originally written by Pontecorvo and Gribov, however the standard probability is validated in the ultrarelativistic neutrino limit. The massive neutrino states are interpreted as quasiparticles on a vacuum condensate of "Cooper pairs" of massless flavour neutrinos. The newly defined oscillating particle states are for neutrino oscillations what the Klauder--Sudarshan--Glauber coherent states are for quantum optics.

Sakharov's induced gravity and the Poincaré gauge theory

We explore Sakharov's seminal idea that gravitational dynamics is induced by the quantum corrections from the matter sector. This was the starting point of the view that gravity has an emergent origin, which soon gained impetus due to the advent of black hole thermodynamics. In the generalized framework of Riemann--Cartan spacetime with both curvature and torsion, the induced gravitational action is obtained for free nonminimally coupled scalar and Dirac fields. For a realistic matter content, the induced Newton constant is obtained to be of the magnitude of the ultraviolet cutoff, which implies that the cutoff is of the order of the Planck mass. Finally, we conjecture that the action for any gauge theory of gravity at low energies can be induced by Sakharov's mechanism. This is explicitly shown by obtaining the Poincaré gauge theory of gravity.

Observable Zitterbewegung in Curved Spacetimes

Zitterbewegung, as it was originally described by Schrödinger, is an unphysical, non-observable effect. We verify whether the effect can be observed in non-inertial reference frames/curved spacetimes, where the ambiguity in defining particle states results in a mixing of positive and negative frequency modes. We explicitly demonstrate that such a mixing is in fact necessary to obtain the correct classical value for a particle's velocity in a uniformly accelerated reference frame, whereas in cosmological spacetime a particle does indeed exhibit Zitterbewegung.

Neutrino-antineutrino Mass Splitting in the Standard Model: Neutrino Oscillation and Baryogenesis

By adding a neutrino mass term to the Standard Model, which is Lorentz and $SU(2)\times U(1)$ invariant but non-local to evade $CPT$ theorem, it is shown that non-locality within a distance scale of the Planck length, that may not be fatal to unitarity in generic effective theory, can generate the neutrino-antineutrino mass splitting of the order of observed neutrino mass differences, which is tested in oscillation experiments, and non-negligible baryon asymmetry depending on the estimate of sphaleron dynamics. The one-loop order induced electron-positron mass splitting in the Standard Model is shown to be finite and estimated at $\sim 10^{-20}$ eV, well below the experimental bound $< 10^{-2}$ eV. The induced $CPT$ violation in the $K$-meson in the Standard Model is expected to be even smaller and well below the experimental bound $|m_{K}-m_{\bar{K}}|<0.44\times 10^{-18}$ GeV.

Neutron-antineutron oscillation and parity and CP symmetries

It is shown that the neutron-antineutron oscillation per se does not necessarily imply CP violation in an effective local Lorentz invariant description of the neutron which preserves CPT, contrary to a recent analysis in the literature. A CP- and baryon number-violating term can be transformed into a CP conserving one, thus rendering the CP violation spurious and unusable in the analysis of baryogenesis, for example. It is also shown that the neutron-antineutron oscillation in a $ΔB=2$, Lorentz and CPT invariant interaction can occur only when parity is violated, irrespective of the CP properties; when parity is conserved, it is the ordinary quantum transition from neutron to antineutron which takes place. Those statements are proven by explicitly analyzing all the possible combinations with P, C and CP violation or their conservation. Moreover, a suitable combination of P=odd and P=even $ΔB=2$ interactions in the present model is shown to give rise to the CP preserving mass term for the right-handed neutrino if one replaces the neutron by the neutrino, reinforcing the conclusion.

Stratified Fiber Bundles, Quinn Homology and Brane Stability of Hyperbolic Orbifolds

We revisit the problem of stability of string vacua involving hyperbolic orbifolds using methods from homotopy theory and K-homology. We propose a definition of Type II string theory on such backgrounds that further carry stratified systems of fiber bundles, which generalise the more conventional orbifold and symmetric string backgrounds, together with a classification of wrapped branes by a suitable generalized homology theory. For spaces stratified fibered over hyperbolic orbifolds we use the algebraic K-theory of their fundamental groups and Quinn homology to derive criteria for brane stability in terms of an Atiyah-Hirzebruch type spectral sequence with its lift to K-homology. Stable D-branes in this setting carry stratified charges which induce new additive structures on the corresponding K-homology groups. We extend these considerations to backgrounds which support H-flux, where we use K-groups of twisted group algebras of the fundamental groups to analyse stability of locally symmetric spaces with K-amenable isometry groups, and derive stability conditions for branes wrapping the fibers of an Eilenberg-MacLane spectrum functor.

Can TeVeS be a viable theory of gravity?

Among modified gravitational theories, the Tensor-Vector-Scalar (TeVeS) occupies a special place -- it is a covariant theory of gravity that produces the modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) in the nonrelativistic weak field limit and explains the astrophysical data at scales larger than that of the Solar System, without the need of an excessive amount of invisible matter. We show that, in contrast to other modified theories, TeVeS is free from ghosts. These achievements make TeVeS (and its nonrelativistic limit) a viable theory of gravity. A speculative outlook on the emergence of TeVeS from a quantum theory is presented.

Hamiltonian analysis of curvature-squared gravity with or without conformal invariance

We analyze gravitational theories with quadratic curvature terms, including the case of conformally invariant Weyl gravity, motivated by the intention to find a renormalizable theory of gravity in the ultraviolet region, yet yielding general relativity at long distances. In the Hamiltonian formulation of Weyl gravity, the number of local constraints is equal to the number of unstable directions in phase space, which in principle could be sufficient for eliminating the unstable degrees of freedom in the full nonlinear theory. All the other theories of quadratic type are unstable -- a problem appearing as ghost modes in the linearized theory. We find that the full projection of the Weyl tensor onto a three-dimensional hypersurface contains an additional fully traceless component, given by a quadratic extrinsic curvature tensor. A certain inconsistency in the literature is found and resolved: when the conformal invariance of Weyl gravity is broken by a cosmological constant term, the theory becomes pathological, since a constraint required by the Hamiltonian analysis imposes the determinant of the metric of spacetime to be zero. In order to resolve this problem by restoring the conformal invariance, we introduce a new scalar field that couples to the curvature of spacetime, reminiscent of the introduction of vector fields for ensuring the gauge invariance.

Mimetic dark matter, ghost instability and a mimetic tensor-vector-scalar gravity

Recently modified gravitational theories which mimic the behaviour of dark matter, the so-called "Mimetic Dark Matter", have been proposed. We study the consistency of such theories with respect to the absence of ghost instability and propose a new tensor-vector-scalar theory of gravity, which is a generalization of the previous models of mimetic dark matter with additional desirable features. The original model proposed by Chamseddine and Mukhanov [JHEP 1311 (2013) 135, arXiv:1308.5410] is concluded to describe a regular pressureless dust, presuming that we consider only those configurations where the energy density of the mimetic dust remains positive under time evolution. For certain type of configurations the theory can become unstable. Both alternative modified theories of gravity, which are based on a vector field (tensor-vector theory) or a vector field and a scalar field (tensor-vector-scalar theory), are free of ghost instabilities.

Neutrino-antineutrino mass splitting in the Standard Model and baryogenesis

On the basis of a previously proposed mechanism of neutrino-antineutrino mass splitting in the Standard Model, which is Lorentz and $SU(2)\times U(1)$ invariant but non-local to evade $CPT$ theorem, we discuss the possible implications of neutrino-antineutrino mass splitting on neutrino physics and baryogenesis. It is shown that non-locality within a distance scale of the Planck length, that may not be fatal to unitarity in generic effective theory, can generate the neutrino-antineutrino mass splitting of the order of observed neutrino mass differences, which is tested in oscillation experiments, and non-negligible baryon asymmetry depending on the estimate of sphaleron dynamics. Arnowitt-Deser-Misner representation and Hamiltonian analysis of covariant renormalizable gravity

We study the recently proposed Covariant Renormalizable Gravity (CRG), which aims to provide a generally covariant ultraviolet completion of general relativity. We obtain a space-time decomposed form --- an Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) representation --- of the CRG action. The action is found to contain time derivatives of the gravitational fields up to fourth order. Some ways to reduce the order of these time derivatives are considered. The resulting action is analyzed using the Hamiltonian formalism, which was originally adapted for constrained theories by Dirac. It is shown that the theory has a consistent set of constraints. It is, however, found that the theory exhibits four propagating physical degrees of freedom. This is one degree of freedom more than in Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) gravity and two more propagating modes than in general relativity. One extra physical degree of freedom has its origin in the higher order nature of the CRG action. The other extra propagating mode is a consequence of a projectability condition similarly as in HL gravity. Some additional gauge symmetry may need to be introduced in order to get rid of the extra gravitational degrees of freedom.

Higher derivative gravity with spontaneous symmetry breaking: Hamiltonian analysis of new covariant renormalizable gravity

In order to explore some general features of modified theories of gravity which involve higher derivatives and spontaneous Lorentz and/or diffeomorphism symmetry breaking, we study the recently proposed new version of covariant renormalizable gravity (CRG). CRG attains power-counting renormalizability via higher derivatives and introduction of a constrained scalar field and spontaneous symmetry breaking. We obtain an Arnowitt-Deser-Misner representation of the CRG action in four-dimensional spacetime with respect to a foliation of spacetime adapted to the constrained scalar field. The resulting action is analyzed by using Hamiltonian formalism. We discover that CRG contains two extra degrees of freedom. One of them carries negative energy (a ghost) and it will destabilize the theory due to its interactions. This result is in contrast with the original paper [Phys. Lett. B 701, 117 (2011), arXiv:1104.4286 [hep-th]], where it was concluded that the theory is free of ghosts and renormalizable when we analyze fluctuations on the flat background.

Lorentz-invariant CPT violation

A Lorentz-invariant CPT violation, which may be termed as long-distance CPT violation in contrast to the familiar short-distance CPT violation, has been recently proposed. This scheme is based on a non-local interaction vertex and characterized by an infrared divergent form factor. We show that the Lorentz covariant $T^{\star}$-product is consistently defined and the energy-momentum conservation is preserved in perturbation theory if the path integral is suitably defined for this non-local theory, although unitarity is generally lost. It is illustrated that T violation is realized in the decay and formation processes. It is also argued that the equality of masses and decay widths of the particle and anti-particle is preserved if the non-local CPT violation is incorporated either directly or as perturbation by starting with the conventional CPT-even local Lagrangian. However, we also explicitly show that the present non-local scheme can induce the splitting of particle and anti-particle mass eigenvalues if one considers a more general class of Lagrangians.

Electromagnetic interaction in theory with Lorentz invariant CPT violation

An attempt is made to incorporate the electromagnetic interaction in a Lorentz invariant but CPT violating non-local model with particle-antiparticle mass-splitting, which is regarded as a modified QED. The gauge invariance is maintained by the Schwinger non-integrable phase factor but the electromagnetic interaction breaks C, CP and CPT symmetries. Implications of the present CPT breaking scheme on the electromagnetic transitions and particle-antiparticle pair creation are discussed. The CPT violation such as the one suggested here may open a new path to the analysis of baryon asymmetry since some of the Sakharov constraints are expected to be modified.

Hamiltonian analysis of non-projectable modified F(R) Hořava-Lifshitz gravity

We study a version of the recently proposed modified $F(R)$ Hořava-Lifshitz gravity that abandons the projectability condition of the lapse variable. We discovered that the projectable version of this theory has a consistent Hamiltonian structure, and that the theory has interesting cosmological solutions which can describe the eras of accelerated expansion of the universe in a unified manner. The usual Hořava-Lifshitz gravity is a special case of our theory. Hamiltonian analysis of the non-projectable theory, however, shows that this theory has serious problems. These problems are compared with those found in the original Hořava-Lifshitz gravity. A general observation on the structure of the Poisson bracket of Hamiltonian constraints in all theories of the Hořava-Lifshitz type is made: in the resulting tertiary constraint the highest order spatial derivative of the lapse $N$ is always of uneven order. Since the vanishing of the lapse (N=0) is required by the preservation of the Hamiltonian constraints under time evolution, we conclude that the non-projectable version of the theory is physically inconsistent.

Lorentz invariant CPT violation: Particle and antiparticle mass splitting

The interpretation of neutrino oscillation data has led to the question whether, in principle, an antiparticle like antineutrino can have a different mass than its particle. In the framework of a Lorentz invariant CPT violation, which is based on the nonlocal interaction vertex and characterized by the infrared divergent form factor, we present an explicit Lagrangian model for the fermion and antifermion mass splitting.

Modified F(R) Horava-Lifshitz gravity: a way to accelerating FRW cosmology

We propose a general approach for the construction of modified gravity which is invariant under foliation-preserving diffeomorphisms. Special attention is paid to the formulation of modified $F(R)$ Hořava-Lifshitz gravity (FRHL), whose Hamiltonian structure is studied. It is demonstrated that the spatially-flat FRW equations of FRHL are consistent with the constraint equations. The analysis of de Sitter solutions for several versions of FRHL indicates that the unification of the early-time inflation with the late-time acceleration is possible. It is shown that a special choice of parameters for FRHL leads to the same spatially-flat FRW equations as in the case of traditional $F(R)$-gravity. Finally, an essentially most general modified Hořava-Lifshitz gravity is proposed, motivated by its fully diffeomorphism-invariant counterpart, with the restriction that the action does not contain derivatives higher than the second order with respect to the time coordinate.

Modified first-order Horava-Lifshitz gravity: Hamiltonian analysis of the general theory and accelerating FRW cosmology in power-law F(R) model

We propose the most general modified first-order Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) gravity, whose action does not contain time derivatives higher than the second order. The Hamiltonian structure of this theory is studied in all the details in the case of the spatially-flat FRW space-time, demonstrating many of the features of the general theory. It is shown that, with some plausible assumptions, including the projectability of the lapse function, this model is consistent. As a large class of such theories, the modified HL $F(R)$ gravity is introduced. The study of its ultraviolet properties shows that its $z=3$ version seems to be renormalizable in the same way as the original HL proposal. The Hamiltonian analysis of the modified HL $F(R)$ gravity shows that it is in general a consistent theory. The $F(R)$ gravity action is also studied in the fixed-gauge form, where the appearance of a scalar field is particularly illustrative. Then the spatially-flat FRW cosmology for this $F(R)$ gravity is investigated. It is shown that a special choice of parameters for this theory leads to the same equations of motion as in the case of traditional $F(R)$ gravity. Nevertheless, the cosmological structure of the modified HL $F(R)$ gravity turns out to be much richer than for its traditional counterpart. The emergence of multiple de Sitter solutions indicates to the possibility of unification of early-time inflation with late-time acceleration within the same model. Power-law $F(R)$ theories are investigated in detail. It is analytically shown that they have a quite rich cosmological structure: early/late-time cosmic acceleration of quintessence, as well as of phantom types. Also it is demonstrated that all the four known types of finite-time future singularities may occur in the power-law HL $F(R)$ gravity. Finally, a covariant proposal for (renormalizable) $F(R)$ gravity within the HL spirit is presented.

On entropic gravity: the entropy postulate, entropy content of screens and relation to quantum mechanics

We consider the controversial hypothesis that gravity is an entropic force that has its origin in the thermodynamics of holographic screens. Several key aspects of entropic gravity are discussed. In particular, we revisit and elaborate on our criticism of the recent claim that entropic gravity fails to explain observations involving gravitationally-bound quantum states of neutrons in the GRANIT experiment and gravitationally induced quantum interference. We argue that the analysis leading to this claim is troubled by a misinterpretation concerning the relation between the microstates of a holographic screen and the state of a particle in the emergent space, engendering inconsistencies. A point of view that could resolve the inconsistencies is presented. We expound the general idea of the aforementioned critical analysis of entropic gravity in such a consistent setting. This enables us to clarify the problem and to identify a premise whose validity will decide the faith of the criticism against entropic gravity. It is argued that in order to reach a sensible conclusion we need more detailed knowledge on entropic gravity. These arguments are relevant to any theory of emergent space, where the entropy of the microscopic system depends on the distribution of matter in the emergent space.

On neutrino masses via CPT violating Higgs interaction in the Standard Model

The Lorentz invariant $CPT$ violation by using non-local interactions is naturally incorporated in the Higgs coupling to neutrinos in the Standard Model, without spoiling the basic $SU(2)_{L}\times U(1)$ gauge symmetry. The neutrino--antineutrino mass splitting is thus realized by the mechanism which was proposed recently, assuming the neutrino masses to be predominantly Dirac-type in the Standard Model.

CPT Violation Does Not Lead to Violation of Lorentz Invariance and Vice Versa

We present a class of interacting nonlocal quantum field theories, in which the CPT invariance is violated while the Lorentz invariance is present. This result rules out a previous claim in the literature that the CPT violation implies the violation of Lorentz invariance. Furthermore, there exists the reciprocal of this theorem, namely that the violation of Lorentz invariance does not lead to the CPT violation, provided that the residual symmetry of Lorentz invariance admits the proper representation theory for the particles. The latter occurs in the case of quantum field theories on a noncommutative space-time, which in place of the broken Lorentz symmetry possesses the twisted Poincaré invariance. With such a CPT-violating interaction and the addition of a C-violating (e.g., electroweak) interaction, the quantum corrections due to the combined interactions could lead to different properties for the particle and antiparticle, including their masses.

Magnetic Monopole in Noncommutative Space-Time and Wu-Yang Singularity-Free Gauge Transformations

We investigate the validity of the Dirac Quantization Condition (DQC) for magnetic monopoles in noncommutative space-time. We use an approach which is based on an extension of the method introduced by Wu and Yang. To study the effects of noncommutativity of space-time, we consider the gauge transformations of $U_\star(1)$ gauge fields and use the corresponding deformed Maxwell's equations. Using a perturbation expansion in the noncommutativity parameter $θ$, we show that the DQC remains unmodified up to the first order in the expansion parameter. The result is obtained for a class of noncommutative source terms, which reduce to the Dirac delta function in the commutative limit.

Noncommutative Time in Quantum Field Theory

We analyze, starting from first principles, the quantization of field theories, in order to find out to which problems a noncommutative time would possibly lead. We examine the problem in the interaction picture (Tomonaga-Schwinger equation), the Heisenberg picture (Yang-Feldman-Källén equation) and the path integral approach. They all indicate inconsistency when time is taken as a noncommutative coordinate. The causality issue appears as the key aspect, while the unitarity problem is subsidiary. These results are consistent with string theory, which does not admit a time-space noncommutative quantum field theory as its low-energy limit, with the exception of light-like noncommutativity.

On gravity as an entropic force

We consider E. Verlinde's proposal that gravity is an entropic force -- we shall call this theory entropic gravity (EG) -- and reanalyze a recent claim that this theory is in contradiction with the observation of the gravitationally-bound ground state of neutrons in the GRANIT experiment. We find that EG does not necessarily contradict the existence of gravitationally-bound quantum states of neutrons in the Earth's gravitational field, since EG is equivalent to Newtonian gravity in this case. However, certain transitions between the gravitationally-bound quantum states of neutrons, in particular spontaneous decays of excited states, which can hopefully be observed in future experiments, cannot be explained in the framework of EG, unless essential ingredients are introduced into it. Otherwise, a quantized description of gravity will be required.

In the context of the so-called Gauss-Bonnet gravity, where the gravitational action includes function of the Gauss-Bonnet invariant, we study cosmological solutions, especially the well-known $Λ$CDM model. It is shown that the dark energy contribution and even the inflationary epoch can be explained in the frame of this kind of theories with no need of any other kind of component. Other cosmological solutions are constructed and the rich properties that this kind of theories provide are explored.

Spontaneous reduction of noncommutative gauge symmetry and model building

We propose a mechanism for the spontaneous (gauge-invariant) reduction of noncommutative ${\cal U}(n)$ gauge theories down to SU(n). This can be achieved through the condensation of composite ${\cal U}(n)$ gauge invariant fields that involves half-infinite Wilson lines in trace-U(1) noninvariant and SU(n) preserving direction. Based on this mechanism we discuss anomaly-free fully gauge invariant noncommutative Standard Model based on the minimal gauge group ${\cal U}(3)\times {\cal U}(2)\times {\cal U}(1)$, previously proposed, and show how it can be consistently reduced to the Standard Model with the usual particle spectrum. Charge quantization for quarks and leptons naturally follows from the model.
