Coarse fundamental groups and box spaces

We use a coarse version of the fundamental group first introduced by Barcelo, Kramer, Laubenbacher and Weaver to show that box spaces of finitely presented groups detect the normal subgroups used to construct the box space, up to isomorphism. As a consequence we have that two finitely presented groups admit coarsely equivalent box spaces if and only if they are commensurable via normal subgroups. We also provide an example of two filtrations $(N_i)$ and $(M_i)$ of a free group $F$ such that $M_i>N_i$ for all $i$ with $[M_i:N_i]$ uniformly bounded, but with $\Box_{(N_i)}F$ not coarsely equivalent to $\Box_{(M_i)}F$. Finally, we give some applications of the main theorem for rank gradient and the first $\ell^2$ Betti number, and show that the main theorem can be used to construct infinitely many coarse equivalence classes of box spaces with various properties.

Expanders and box spaces

We consider box spaces of finitely generated, residually finite groups $G$, and try to distinguish them up to coarse equivalence. We show that, for $n\geq 2$, the group $SL_n(\mathbb{Z})$ has a continuum of box spaces which are pairwise non-coarsely equivalent expanders. Moreover, varying the integer $n\geq 3$, expanders given as box spaces of $SL_n(\mathbb{Z})$ are pairwise inequivalent; similarly, varying the prime $p$, expanders given as box spaces of $SL_2(\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{p}])$ are pairwise inequivalent. A strong form of non-expansion for a box space is the existence of $α\in]0,1]$ such that the diameter of each component $X_n$ satisfies $diam(X_n)=Ω(|X_n|^α)$. By a result of Breuillard and Tointon, the existence of such a box space implies that $G$ virtually maps onto $\mathbb{Z}$: we establish the converse. For the lamplighter group $(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})\wr\mathbb{Z}$ and for a semi-direct product $\mathbb{Z}^2\rtimes\mathbb{Z}$, such box spaces are explicitly constructed using specific congruence subgroups. We finally introduce the full box space of $G$, i.e. the coarse disjoint union of all finite quotients of $G$. We prove that the full box space of a group mapping onto the free group $\mathbb{F}_2$ is not coarsely equivalent to the full box space of an $S$-arithmetic group satisfying the Congruence Subgroup Property.

Embeddability of generalized wreath products and box spaces

Given two finitely generated groups that coarsely embed into a Hilbert space, it is known that their wreath product also embeds coarsely into a Hilbert space. We introduce a wreath product construction for general metric spaces X,Y,Z and derive a condition, called the (delta-polynomial) path lifting property, such that coarse embeddability of X,Y and Z implies coarse embeddability of X\wr_Z Y. We also give bounds on the compression of X\wr_Z Y in terms of delta and the compressions of X,Y and Z. Next, we investigate the stability of the property of admitting a box space which coarsely embeds into a Hilbert space under the taking of wreath products. We show that if an infinite finitely generated residually finite group H has a coarsely embeddable box space, then G\wr H has a coarsely embeddable box space if G is finitely generated abelian. This leads, in particular, to new examples of bounded geometry coarsely embeddable metric spaces without property A.
