Variable-Length Wideband CSI Feedback via Loewner Interpolation and Deep Learning

In this paper, we propose a variable-length wideband channel state information (CSI) feedback scheme for Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) massive multiple-input multipleoutput (MIMO) systems in U6G band (6425MHz-7125MHz). Existing compressive sensing (CS)-based and deep learning (DL)- based schemes preprocess the channel by truncating it in the angular-delay domain. However, the energy leakage effect caused by the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) basis will be more serious and leads to a bottleneck in recovery accuracy when applied to wideband channels such as those in U6G. To solve this problem, we introduce the Loewner Interpolation (LI) framework which generates a set of dynamic bases based on the current CSI matrix, enabling highly efficient compression in the frequency domain. Then, the LI basis is further compressed in the spatial domain through a neural network. To achieve a flexible trade-off between feedback overhead and recovery accuracy, we design a rateless auto-encoder trained with tail dropout and a multi-objective learning schedule, supporting variable-length feedback with a singular model. Meanwhile, the codewords are ranked by importance, ensuring that the base station (BS) can still maintain acceptable reconstruction performance under limited feedback with tail erasures. Furthermore, an adaptive quantization strategy is developed for the feedback framework to enhance robustness. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme could achieve higher CSI feedback accuracy with less or equal feedback overhead, and improve spectral efficiency compared with baseline schemes.

Channel Tracking and Prediction for IRS-aided Wireless Communications

For intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided wireless communications, channel estimation is essential and usually requires excessive channel training overhead when the number of IRS reflecting elements is large. The acquisition of accurate channel state information (CSI) becomes more challenging when the channel is not quasi-static due to the mobility of the transmitter and/or receiver. In this work, we study an IRS-aided wireless communication system with a time-varying channel model and propose an innovative two-stage transmission protocol. In the first stage, we send pilot symbols and track the direct/reflected channels based on the received signal, and then data signals are transmitted. In the second stage, instead of sending pilot symbols first, we directly predict the direct/reflected channels and all the time slots are used for data transmission. Based on the proposed transmission protocol, we propose a two-stage channel tracking and prediction (2SCTP) scheme to obtain the direct and reflected channels with low channel training overhead, which is achieved by exploiting the temporal correlation of the time-varying channels. Specifically, we first consider a special case where the IRS-access point (AP) channel is assumed to be static, for which a Kalman filter (KF)-based algorithm and a long short-term memory (LSTM)-based neural network are proposed for channel tracking and prediction, respectively. Then, for the more general case where the IRS-AP, user-IRS and user-AP channels are all assumed to be time-varying, we present a generalized KF (GKF)-based channel tracking algorithm, where proper approximations are employed to handle the underlying non-Gaussian random variables. Numerical simulations are provided to verify the effectiveness of our proposed transmission protocol and channel tracking/prediction algorithms as compared to existing ones.

Incorporating Commonsense Knowledge into Story Ending Generation via Heterogeneous Graph Networks

Story ending generation is an interesting and challenging task, which aims to generate a coherent and reasonable ending given a story context. The key challenges of the task lie in how to comprehend the story context sufficiently and handle the implicit knowledge behind story clues effectively, which are still under-explored by previous work. In this paper, we propose a Story Heterogeneous Graph Network (SHGN) to explicitly model both the information of story context at different granularity levels and the multi-grained interactive relations among them. In detail, we consider commonsense knowledge, words and sentences as three types of nodes. To aggregate non-local information, a global node is also introduced. Given this heterogeneous graph network, the node representations are updated through graph propagation, which adequately utilizes commonsense knowledge to facilitate story comprehension. Moreover, we design two auxiliary tasks to implicitly capture the sentiment trend and key events lie in the context. The auxiliary tasks are jointly optimized with the primary story ending generation task in a multi-task learning strategy. Extensive experiments on the ROCStories Corpus show that the developed model achieves new state-of-the-art performances. Human study further demonstrates that our model generates more reasonable story endings.

Information-Theoretic Limits of Integrated Sensing and Communication with Correlated Sensing and Channel States for Vehicular Networks

In connected vehicular networks, it is vital to have vehicular nodes that are capable of sensing about surrounding environments and exchanging messages with each other for automating and coordinating purpose. Towards this end, integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), combining both sensing and communication systems to jointly utilize their resources and to pursue mutual benefits, emerges as a new cost-effective solution. In ISAC, the hardware and spectrum co-sharing leads to a fundamental tradeoff between sensing and communication performance, which is not well understood except for very simple cases with the same sensing and channel states, and perfect channel state information at the receiver (CSIR). In this paper, a general point-to-point ISAC model is proposed to account for the scenarios that the sensing state is different from but correlated with the channel state, and the CSIR is not necessarily perfect. For the model considered, the optimal tradeoff is characterized by a capacity-distortion function that quantifies the best communication rate for a given sensing distortion constraint requirement. An iterative algorithm is proposed to compute such tradeoff, and a few non-trivial examples are constructed to demonstrate the benefits of ISAC as compared to the separation-based approach.

Joint Pilot Optimization, Target Detection and Channel Estimation for Integrated Sensing and Communication Systems

Radar sensing will be integrated into the 6G communication system to support various applications. In this integrated sensing and communication system, a radar target may also be a communication channel scatterer. In this case, the radar and communication channels exhibit certain joint burst sparsity. We propose a two-stage joint pilot optimization, target detection and channel estimation scheme to exploit such joint burst sparsity and pilot beamforming gain to enhance detection/estimation performance. In Stage 1, the base station (BS) sends downlink pilots (DP) for initial target search, and the user sends uplink pilots (UP) for channel estimation. Then the BS performs joint target detection and channel estimation based on the reflected DP and received UP signals. In Stage 2, the BS exploits the prior information obtained in Stage 1 to optimize the DP signal to achieve beamforming gain and further refine the performance. A Turbo Sparse Bayesian inference algorithm is proposed for joint target detection and channel estimation in both stages. The pilot optimization problem in Stage 2 is a semi-definite programming with rank-1 constraints. By replacing the rank-1 constraint with a tight and smooth approximation, we propose an efficient pilot optimization algorithm based on the majorization-minimization method. Simulations verify the advantages of the proposed scheme.

Latency Minimization for mmWave D2D Mobile Edge Computing Systems: Joint Task Allocation and Hybrid Beamforming Design

Mobile edge computing (MEC) and millimeter wave (mmWave) communications are capable of significantly reducing the network's delay and enhancing its capacity. In this paper we investigate a mmWave and device-to-device (D2D) assisted MEC system, in which user A carries out some computational tasks and shares the results with user B with the aid of a base station (BS). We propose a novel two-timescale joint hybrid beamforming and task allocation algorithm to reduce the system latency whilst cut down the required signaling overhead. Specifically, the high-dimensional analog beamforming matrices are updated in a frame-based manner based on the channel state information (CSI) samples, where each frame consists of a number of time slots, while the low-dimensional digital beamforming matrices and the offloading ratio are optimized more frequently relied on the low-dimensional effective channel matrices in each time slot. A stochastic successive convex approximation (SSCA) based algorithm is developed to design the long-term analog beamforming matrices. As for the short-term variables, the digital beamforming matrices are optimized relying on the innovative penalty-concave convex procedure (penalty-CCCP) for handling the mmWave non-linear transmit power constraint, and the offloading ratio can be obtained via the derived closed-form solution. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm by comparing the benchmarks.

Multiband Delay Estimation for Localization Using a Two-Stage Global Estimation Scheme

The time of arrival (TOA)-based localization techniques, which need to estimate the delay of the line-of-sight (LoS) path, have been widely employed in location-aware networks. To achieve a high-accuracy delay estimation, a number of multiband-based algorithms have been proposed recently, which exploit the channel state information (CSI) measurements over multiple non-contiguous frequency bands. However, to the best of our knowledge, there still lacks an efficient scheme that fully exploits the multiband gains when the phase distortion factors caused by hardware imperfections are considered, due to that the associated multi-parameter estimation problem contains many local optimums and the existing algorithms can easily get stuck in a "bad" local optimum. To address these issues, we propose a novel two-stage global estimation (TSGE) scheme for multiband delay estimation. In the coarse stage, we exploit the group sparsity structure of the multiband channel and propose a Turbo Bayesian inference (Turbo-BI) algorithm to achieve a good initial delay estimation based on a coarse signal model, which is transformed from the original multiband signal model by absorbing the carrier frequency terms. The estimation problem derived from the coarse signal model contains less local optimums and thus a more stable estimation can be achieved than directly using the original signal model. Then in the refined stage, with the help of coarse estimation results to narrow down the search range, we perform a global delay estimation using a particle swarm optimization-least square (PSO-LS) algorithm based on a refined multiband signal model to exploit the multiband gains to further improve the estimation accuracy. Simulation results show that the proposed TSGE significantly outperforms the benchmarks with comparative computational complexity.

PH-Net: Parallelepiped Microstructure Homogenization via 3D Convolutional Neural Networks

Microstructures are attracting academic and industrial interests with the rapid development of additive manufacturing. The numerical homogenization method has been well studied for analyzing mechanical behaviors of microstructures; however, it is too time-consuming to be applied to online computing or applications requiring high-frequency calling, e.g., topology optimization. Data-driven homogenization methods emerge as a more efficient choice but limit the microstructures into a cubic shape, which are infeasible to the periodic microstructures with a more general shape, e.g., parallelepiped. This paper introduces a fine-designed 3D convolutional neural network (CNN) for fast homogenization of parallel-shaped microstructures, named PH-Net. Superior to existing data-driven methods, PH-Net predicts the local displacements of microstructures under specified macroscope strains instead of direct homogeneous material, motivating us to present a label-free loss function based on minimal potential energy. For dataset construction, we introduce a shape-material transformation and voxel-material tensor to encode microstructure type, base material and boundary shape together as the input of PH-Net, such that it is CNN-friendly and enhances PH-Net on generalization in terms of microstructure type, base material, and boundary shape. PH-Net predicts homogenized properties with hundreds of acceleration compared to the numerical homogenization method and even supports online computing. Moreover, it does not require a labeled dataset and thus is much faster than current deep learning methods in training processing. Benefiting from predicting local displacement, PH-Net provides both homogeneous material properties and microscopic mechanical properties, e.g., strain and stress distribution, yield strength, etc. We design a group of physical experiments and verify the prediction accuracy of PH-Net.

RT-KGD: Relation Transition Aware Knowledge-Grounded Dialogue Generation

Grounding dialogue system with external knowledge is a promising way to improve the quality of responses. Most existing works adopt knowledge graphs (KGs) as the external resources, paying attention to the contribution of entities in the last utterance of the dialogue for context understanding and response generation. Nevertheless, the correlations between knowledge implied in the multi-turn context and the transition regularities between relations in KGs are under-explored. To this end, we propose a Relation Transition aware Knowledge-Grounded Dialogue Generation model (RT-KGD). Specifically, inspired by the latent logic of human conversation, our model integrates dialogue-level relation transition regularities with turn-level entity semantic information. In this manner, the interaction between knowledge is considered to produce abundant clues for predicting the appropriate knowledge and generating coherent responses. The experimental results on both automatic evaluation and manual evaluation indicate that our model outperforms state-of-the-art baselines.

Successive Convex Approximation Based Off-Policy Optimization for Constrained Reinforcement Learning

We propose a successive convex approximation based off-policy optimization (SCAOPO) algorithm to solve the general constrained reinforcement learning problem, which is formulated as a constrained Markov decision process (CMDP) in the context of average cost. The SCAOPO is based on solving a sequence of convex objective/feasibility optimization problems obtained by replacing the objective and constraint functions in the original problems with convex surrogate functions. At each iteration, the convex surrogate problem can be efficiently solved by Lagrange dual method even the policy is parameterized by a high-dimensional function. Moreover, the SCAOPO enables to reuse old experiences from previous updates, thereby significantly reducing the implementation cost when deployed in the real-world engineering systems that need to online learn the environment. In spite of the time-varying state distribution and the stochastic bias incurred by the off-policy learning, the SCAOPO with a feasible initial point can still provably converge to a Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) point of the original problem almost surely.

Energy Efficiency Optimization for Millimeter Wave System with Resolution-Adaptive ADCs

This letter investigates the uplink of a multi-user millimeter wave (mmWave) system, where the base station (BS) is equipped with a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) array and resolution-adaptive analog-to-digital converters (RADCs). Although employing massive MIMO at the BS can significantly improve the spectral efficiency, it also leads to high hardware complexity and huge power consumption. To overcome these challenges, we seek to jointly optimize the beamspace hybrid combiner and the ADC quantization bits allocation to maximize the system energy efficiency (EE) under some practical constraints. The formulated problem is non-convex due to the non-linear fractional objective function and the non-convex feasible set which is generally intractable. In order to handle these difficulties, we first apply some fractional programming (FP) techniques and introduce auxiliary variables to recast this problem into an equivalent form amenable to optimization. Then, we propose an efficient double-loop iterative algorithm based on the penalty dual decomposition (PDD) and the majorization-minimization (MM) methods to find local stationary solutions. Simulation results reveal significant gain over the baselines.

Optimal Hierarchical Radio Resource Management for HetNets with Flexible Backhaul

Providing backhaul connectivity for macro and pico base stations (BSs) constitutes a significant share of infrastructure costs in future heterogeneous networks (HetNets). To address this issue, the emerging idea of flexible backhaul is proposed. Under this architecture, not all the pico BSs are connected to the backhaul, resulting in a significant reduction in the infrastructure costs. In this regard, pico BSs without backhaul connectivity need to communicate with their nearby BSs in order to have indirect accessibility to the backhaul. This makes the radio resource management (RRM) in such networks more complex and challenging. In this paper, we address the problem of cross-layer RRM in HetNets with flexible backhaul. We formulate this problem as a two-timescale non-convex stochastic optimization which jointly optimizes flow control, routing, interference mitigation and link scheduling in order to maximize a generic network utility. By exploiting a hidden convexity of this non-convex problem, we propose an iterative algorithm which converges to the global optimal solution. The proposed algorithm benefits from low complexity and low signalling, which makes it scalable. Moreover, due to the proposed two-timescale design, it is robust to the backhaul signalling latency as well. Simulation results demonstrate the significant performance gain of the proposed solution over various baselines.

Stochastic Transceiver Optimization in Multi-Tags Symbiotic Radio Systems

Symbiotic radio (SR) is emerging as a spectrum- and energy-efficient communication paradigm for future passive Internet-of-things (IoT), where some single-antenna backscatter devices, referred to as Tags, are parasitic in an active primary transmission. The primary transceiver is designed to assist both direct-link (DL) and backscatter-link (BL) communication. In multi-tags SR systems, the transceiver designs become much more complicated due to the presence of DL and inter-Tag interference, which further poses new challenges to the availability and reliability of DL and BL transmission. To overcome these challenges, we formulate the stochastic optimization of transceiver design as the general network utility maximization problem (GUMP). The resultant problem is a stochastic multiple-ratio fractional non-convex problem, and consequently challenging to solve. By leveraging some fractional programming techniques, we tailor a surrogate function with the specific structure and subsequently develop a batch stochastic parallel decomposition (BSPD) algorithm, which is shown to converge to stationary solutions of the GNUMP. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm by numerical examples in terms of the achieved system throughput.

Cache-induced Hierarchical Cooperation in Wireless Device-to-Device Caching Networks

We consider a wireless device-to-device (D2D) caching network where n nodes are placed on a regular grid of area A(n). Each node caches L_C*F (coded) bits from a library of size L*F bits, where L is the number of files and F is the size of each file. Each node requests a file from the library independently according to a popularity distribution. Under a commonly used "physical model" and Zipf popularity distribution, we characterize the optimal per-node capacity scaling law for extended networks (i.e., A(n). Moreover, we propose a cache-induced hierarchical cooperation scheme and associated cache content placement optimization algorithm to achieve the optimal per-node capacity scaling law. When the path loss exponent α<3, the optimal per-node capacity scaling law achieved by the cache-induced hierarchical cooperation can be significantly better than that achieved by the existing state-of-the-art schemes. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that completely characterizes the per-node capacity scaling law for wireless caching networks under the physical model and Zipf distribution with an arbitrary skewness parameter τ. While scaling law analysis yields clean results, it may not accurately reflect the throughput performance of a large network with a finite number of nodes. Therefore, we also analyze the throughput of the proposed cache-induced hierarchical cooperation for networks of practical size. The analysis and simulations verify that cache-induced hierarchical cooperation can also achieve a large throughput gain over the cache-assisted multihop scheme for networks of practical size.

Distributed Stochastic Optimization for Weakly Coupled Systems with Applications to Wireless Communications

In this paper, a framework is proposed to simplify solving the infinite horizon average cost problem for the weakly coupled multi-dimensional systems. Specifically, to address the computational complexity issue, we first introduce a virtual continuous time system (VCTS) and obtain the associated fluid value function. The relationship between the VCTS and the original discrete time system is further established. To facilitate the low complexity distributed implementation and address the coupling challenge, we model the weakly coupled system as a perturbation of a decoupled base system and study the decoupled base system. The fluid value function of the VCTS is approximated by the sum of the per-flow fluid value functions and the approximation error is established using perturbation analysis. Finally, we obtain a low complexity distributed solution based on the per-flow fluid value function approximation. We apply the framework to solve a delay-optimal control problem for the K-pair interference networks and obtain a distributed power control algorithm. The proposed algorithm is compared with various baseline schemes through simulations and it is shown that significant delay performance gain can be achieved.

Dual Link Algorithm for the Weighted Sum Rate Maximization in MIMO Interference Channels

MIMO interference network optimization is important for increasingly crowded wireless communication networks. We provide a new algorithm, named Dual Link algorithm, for the classic problem of weighted sum-rate maximization for MIMO multiaccess channels (MAC), broadcast channels (BC), and general MIMO interference channels with Gaussian input and a total power constraint. For MIMO MAC/BC, the algorithm finds optimal signals to achieve the capacity region boundary. For interference channels with Gaussian input assumption, two of the previous state-of-the-art algorithms are the WMMSE algorithm and the polite water-filling (PWF) algorithm. The WMMSE algorithm is provably convergent, while the PWF algorithm takes the advantage of the optimal transmit signal structure and converges the fastest in most situations but is not guaranteed to converge in all situations. It is highly desirable to design an algorithm that has the advantages of both algorithms. The dual link algorithm is such an algorithm. Its fast and guaranteed convergence is important to distributed implementation and time varying channels. In addition, the technique and a scaling invariance property used in the convergence proof may find applications in other non-convex problems in communication networks.

How Much Cache is Needed to Achieve Linear Capacity Scaling in Backhaul-Limited Dense Wireless Networks?

Dense wireless networks are a promising solution to meet the huge capacity demand in 5G wireless systems. However, there are two implementation issues, namely the interference and backhaul issues. To resolve these issues, we propose a novel network architecture called the backhaul-limited cached dense wireless network (C-DWN), where a physical layer (PHY) caching scheme is employed at the base stations (BSs) but only a fraction of the BSs have wired payload backhauls. The PHY caching can replace the role of wired backhauls to achieve both the cache-induced MIMO cooperation gain and cache-assisted Multihopping gain. Two fundamental questions are addressed. Can we exploit the PHY caching to achieve linear capacity scaling with limited payload backhauls? If so, how much cache is needed? We show that the capacity of the backhaul-limited C-DWN indeed scales linearly with the number of BSs if the BS cache size is larger than a threshold that depends on the content popularity. We also quantify the throughput gain due to cache-induced MIMO cooperation over conventional caching schemes (which exploit purely the cached-assisted multihopping). Interestingly, the minimum BS cache size needed to achieve a significant cache-induced MIMO cooperation gain is the same as that needed to achieve the linear capacity scaling.

Asymptotic Scaling Laws of Wireless Adhoc Network with Physical Layer Caching

We propose a physical layer (PHY) caching scheme for wireless adhoc networks. The PHY caching exploits cache-assisted multihop gain and cache-induced dual-layer CoMP gain, which substantially improves the throughput of wireless adhoc networks. In particular, the PHY caching scheme contains a novel PHY transmission mode called the cache-induced dual-layer CoMP which can support homogeneous opportunistic CoMP in the wireless adhoc network. Compared with traditional per-node throughput scaling results of Θ\left(1/\sqrt{N}\right), we can achieve O(1) per node throughput for a cached wireless adhoc network with N nodes. Moreover, we analyze the throughput of the PHY caching scheme for regular wireless adhoc networks and study the impact of various system parameters on the PHY caching gain.

Two-Stage Subspace Constrained Precoding in Massive MIMO Cellular Systems

We propose a subspace constrained precoding scheme that exploits the spatial channel correlation structure in massive MIMO cellular systems to fully unleash the tremendous gain provided by massive antenna array with reduced channel state information (CSI) signaling overhead. The MIMO precoder at each base station (BS) is partitioned into an inner precoder and a Transmit (Tx) subspace control matrix. The inner precoder is adaptive to the local CSI at each BS for spatial multiplexing gain. The Tx subspace control is adaptive to the channel statistics for inter-cell interference mitigation and Quality of Service (QoS) optimization. Specifically, the Tx subspace control is formulated as a QoS optimization problem which involves an SINR chance constraint where the probability of each user's SINR not satisfying a service requirement must not exceed a given outage probability. Such chance constraint cannot be handled by the existing methods due to the two stage precoding structure. To tackle this, we propose a bi-convex approximation approach, which consists of three key ingredients: random matrix theory, chance constrained optimization and semidefinite relaxation. Then we propose an efficient algorithm to find the optimal solution of the resulting bi-convex approximation problem. Simulations show that the proposed design has significant gain over various baselines.

Duality, Polite Water-filling, and Optimization for MIMO B-MAC Interference Networks and iTree Networks

This paper gives the long sought network version of water-filling named as polite water-filling. Unlike in single-user MIMO channels, where no one uses general purpose optimization algorithms in place of the simple and optimal water-filling for transmitter optimization, the traditional water-filling is generally far from optimal in networks as simple as MIMO multiaccess channels (MAC) and broadcast channels (BC), where steepest ascent algorithms have been used except for the sum-rate optimization. This is changed by the polite water-filling that is optimal for all boundary points of the capacity regions of MAC and BC and for all boundary points of a set of achievable regions of a more general class of MIMO B-MAC interference networks, which is a combination of multiple interfering broadcast channels, from the transmitter point of view, and multiaccess channels, from the receiver point of view, including MAC, BC, interference channels, X networks, and most practical wireless networks as special case. It is polite because it strikes an optimal balance between reducing interference to others and maximizing a link's own rate. Employing it, the related optimizations can be vastly simplified by taking advantage of the structure of the problems. Deeply connected to the polite water-filling, the rate duality is extended to the forward and reverse links of the B-MAC networks. As a demonstration, weighted sum-rate maximization algorithms based on polite water-filling and duality with superior performance and low complexity are designed for B-MAC networks and are analyzed for Interference Tree (iTree) Networks, a sub-class of the B-MAC networks that possesses promising properties for further information theoretic study.

Hierarchical Interference Mitigation for Massive MIMO Cellular Networks

We propose a hierarchical interference mitigation scheme for massive MIMO cellular networks. The MIMO precoder at each base station (BS) is partitioned into an inner precoder and an outer precoder. The inner precoder controls the intra-cell interference and is adaptive to local channel state information (CSI) at each BS (CSIT). The outer precoder controls the inter-cell interference and is adaptive to channel statistics. Such hierarchical precoding structure reduces the number of pilot symbols required for CSI estimation in massive MIMO downlink and is robust to the backhaul latency. We study joint optimization of the outer precoders, the user selection, and the power allocation to maximize a general concave utility which has no closed-form expression. We first apply random matrix theory to obtain an approximated problem with closed-form objective. We show that the solution of the approximated problem is asymptotically optimal with respect to the original problem as the number of antennas per BS grows large. Then using the hidden convexity of the problem, we propose an iterative algorithm to find the optimal solution for the approximated problem. We also obtain a low complexity algorithm with provable convergence. Simulations show that the proposed design has significant gain over various state-of-the-art baselines.

Cache-Enabled Opportunistic Cooperative MIMO for Video Streaming in Wireless Systems

We propose a cache-enabled opportunistic cooperative MIMO (CoMP) framework for wireless video streaming. By caching a portion of the video files at the relays (RS) using a novel MDS-coded random cache scheme, the base station (BS) and RSs opportunistically employ CoMP to achieve spatial multiplexing gain without expensive payload backhaul. We study a two timescale joint optimization of power and cache control to support real-time video streaming. The cache control is to create more CoMP opportunities and is adaptive to the long-term popularity of the video files. The power control is to guarantee the QoS requirements and is adaptive to the channel state information (CSI), the cache state at the RS and the queue state information (QSI) at the users. The joint problem is decomposed into an inner power control problem and an outer cache control problem. We first derive a closed-form power control policy from an approximated Bellman equation. Based on this, we transform the outer problem into a convex stochastic optimization problem and propose a stochastic subgradient algorithm to solve it. Finally, the proposed solution is shown to be asymptotically optimal for high SNR and small timeslot duration. Its superior performance over various baselines is verified by simulations.

Duality and Optimization for Generalized Multi-hop MIMO Amplify-and-Forward Relay Networks with Linear Constraints

We consider a generalized multi-hop MIMO amplify-and-forward (AF) relay network with multiple sources/destinations and arbitrarily number of relays. We establish two dualities and the corresponding dual transformations between such a network and its dual, respectively under single network linear constraint and per-hop linear constraint. The result is a generalization of the previous dualities under different special cases and is proved using new techniques which reveal more insight on the duality structure that can be exploited to optimize MIMO precoders. A unified optimization framework is proposed to find a stationary point for an important class of non-convex optimization problems of AF relay networks based on a local Lagrange dual method, where the primal algorithm only finds a stationary point for the inner loop problem of maximizing the Lagrangian w.r.t. the primal variables. The input covariance matrices are shown to satisfy a polite water-filling structure at a stationary point of the inner loop problem. The duality and polite water-filling are exploited to design fast primal algorithms. Compared to the existing algorithms, the proposed optimization framework with duality-based primal algorithms can be used to solve more general problems with lower computation cost.

Hierarchical Radio Resource Optimization for Heterogeneous Networks with Enhanced Inter-cell Interference Coordination (eICIC)

Interference is a major performance bottleneck in Heterogeneous Network (HetNet) due to its multi-tier topological structure. We propose almost blank resource block (ABRB) for interference control in HetNet. When an ABRB is scheduled in a macro BS, a resource block (RB) with blank payload is transmitted and this eliminates the interference from this macro BS to the pico BSs. We study a two timescale hierarchical radio resource management (RRM) scheme for HetNet with dynamic ABRB control. The long term controls, such as dynamic ABRB, are adaptive to the large scale fading at a RRM server for co-Tier and cross-Tier interference control. The short term control (user scheduling) is adaptive to the local channel state information within each BS to exploit the multi-user diversity. The two timescale optimization problem is challenging due to the exponentially large solution space. We exploit the sparsity in the interference graph of the HetNet topology and derive structural properties for the optimal ABRB control. Based on that, we propose a two timescale alternative optimization solution for the user scheduling and ABRB control. The solution has low complexity and is asymptotically optimal at high SNR. Simulations show that the proposed solution has significant gain over various baselines.

Joint Power and Antenna Selection Optimization in Large Cloud Radio Access Networks

Large multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) networks promise high energy efficiency, i.e., much less power is required to achieve the same capacity compared to the conventional MIMO networks if perfect channel state information (CSI) is available at the transmitter. However, in such networks, huge overhead is required to obtain full CSI especially for Frequency-Division Duplex (FDD) systems. To reduce overhead, we propose a downlink antenna selection scheme, which selects S antennas from M>S transmit antennas based on the large scale fading to serve K\leq S users in large distributed MIMO networks employing regularized zero-forcing (RZF) precoding. In particular, we study the joint optimization of antenna selection, regularization factor, and power allocation to maximize the average weighted sum-rate. This is a mixed combinatorial and non-convex problem whose objective and constraints have no closed-form expressions. We apply random matrix theory to derive asymptotically accurate expressions for the objective and constraints. As such, the joint optimization problem is decomposed into subproblems, each of which is solved by an efficient algorithm. In addition, we derive structural solutions for some special cases and show that the capacity of very large distributed MIMO networks scales as O\left(K\textrm{log}M\right) when M\rightarrow\infty with K,S fixed. Simulations show that the proposed scheme achieves significant performance gain over various baselines.

Mixed-Timescale Precoding and Cache Control in Cached MIMO Interference Network

Consider media streaming in MIMO interference networks whereby multiple base stations (BS) simultaneously deliver media to their associated users using fixed data rates. The performance is fundamentally limited by the cross-link interference. We propose a cache-induced opportunistic cooperative MIMO (CoMP) for interference mitigation. By caching a portion of the media files, the BSs opportunistically employ CoMP to transform the cross-link interference into spatial multiplexing gain. We study a mixed-timescale optimization of MIMO precoding and cache control to minimize the transmit power under the rate constraint. The cache control is to create more CoMP opportunities and is adaptive to the long-term popularity of the media files. The precoding is to guarantee the rate requirement and is adaptive to the channel state information and cache state at the BSs. The joint stochastic optimization problem is decomposed into a short-term precoding and a long-term cache control problem. We propose a precoding algorithm which converges to a stationary point of the short-term problem. Based on this, we exploit the hidden convexity of the long-term problem and propose a low complexity and robust solution using stochastic subgradient. The solution has significant gains over various baselines and does not require explicit knowledge of the media popularity.

MIMO B-MAC Interference Network Optimization under Rate Constraints by Polite Water-filling and Duality

We take two new approaches to design efficient algorithms for transmitter optimization under rate constraints, to guarantee the Quality of Service in general MIMO interference networks, which is a combination of multiple interfering broadcast channels (BC) and multiaccess channels (MAC) and is named B-MAC Networks. Two related optimization problems, maximizing the minimum of weighted rates under a sum-power constraint and minimizing the sum-power under rate constraints, are considered. The first approach takes advantage of existing efficient algorithms for SINR problems by building a bridge between rate and SINR through the design of optimal mappings between them. The approach can be applied to other optimization problems as well. The second approach employs polite water-filling, which is the optimal network version of water-filling that we recently found. It replaces most generic optimization algorithms currently used for networks and reduces the complexity while demonstrating superior performance even in non-convex cases. Both centralized and distributed algorithms are designed and the performance is analyzed in addition to numeric examples.

Technical Report: MIMO B-MAC Interference Network Optimization under Rate Constraints by Polite Water-filling and Duality

We take two new approaches to design efficient algorithms for transmitter optimization under rate constraints to guarantee the Quality of Service in general MIMO interference networks, named B-MAC Networks, which is a combination of multiple interfering broadcast channels (BC) and multiaccess channels (MAC). Two related optimization problems, maximizing the minimum of weighted rates under a sum-power constraint and minimizing the sum-power under rate constraints, are considered. The first approach takes advantage of existing efficient algorithms for SINR problems by building a bridge between rate and SINR through the design of optimal mappings between them so that the problems can be converted to SINR constraint problems. The approach can be applied to other optimization problems as well. The second approach employs polite water-filling, which is the optimal network version of water-filling that we recently found. It replaces almost all generic optimization algorithms currently used for networks and reduces the complexity while demonstrating superior performance even in non-convex cases. Both centralized and distributed algorithms are designed and the performance is analyzed in addition to numeric examples.
