p-adic adelic metrics and Quadratic Chabauty I

We give a new construction of $p$-adic heights on varieties over number fields using $p$-adic Arakelov theory. In analogy with Zhang's construction of real-valued heights in terms of adelic metrics, these heights are given in terms of $p$-adic adelic metrics on line bundles. In particular, we describe a construction of canonical $p$-adic heights on abelian varieties and we show that we recover the canonical Mazur--Tate height and, for Jacobians, the height constructed by Coleman and Gross. Our main application is a new and simplified approach to the Quadratic Chabauty method for the computation of rational points on certain curves over the rationals, by pulling back the canonical height on the Jacobian with respect to a carefully chosen line bundle. We show that our construction allows us to reprove, without using $p$-adic Hodge theory or arithmetic fundamental groups, several results due to Balakrishnan and Dogra. Our method also extends to primes $p$ of bad reduction. One consequence of our work is that for any canonical height ($p$-adic or $\mathbb{R}$-valued) on an abelian variety (and hence on pull-backs to other varieties), the local contribution at a finite prime $q$ can be constructed using $q$-analytic methods.

Explicit quadratic Chabauty over number fields

We generalize the explicit quadratic Chabauty techniques for integral points on odd degree hyperelliptic curves and for rational points on genus 2 bielliptic curves to arbitrary number fields using restriction of scalars. This is achieved by combining equations coming from Siksek's extension of classical Chabauty with equations defined in terms of p-adic heights attached to independent continuous idele class characters. We give several examples to show the practicality of our methods.

Quadratic Chabauty: p-adic height pairings and integral points on hyperelliptic curves

We give a formula for the component at p of the p-adic height pairing of a divisor of degree 0 on a hyperelliptic curve. We use this to give a Chabauty-like method for finding p-adic approximations to p-integral points on such curves when the Mordell-Weil rank of the Jacobian equals the genus. In this case we get an explicit bound for the number of such p-integral points, and we are able to use the method in explicit computation. An important aspect of the method is that it only requires a basis of the Mordell-Weil group tensored with the rationals.

Frobenius lifts and point counting for smooth curves

We describe an algorithm to compute the zeta-function of a proper, smooth curve over a finite field, when the curve is given together with some auxiliary data. Our method is based on computing the matrix of the action of a semi-linear Frobenius on the first cohomology group of the curve by means of Serre duality. The cup product involved can be computed locally, after first computing local expansions of a globally defined lift of Frobenius. The resulting algorithm's complexity is softly cubic in the field degree, which is also the case with Kedlaya's algorithm in the hyperelliptic case.

Coleman-Gross height pairings and the $p$-adic sigma function

We give a direct proof that the Mazur-Tate and Coleman-Gross heights on elliptic curves coincide. The main ingredient is to extend the Coleman-Gross height to the case of divisors with non-disjoint support and, doing some $p$-adic analysis, show that, in particular, its component above $p$ gives, in the special case of an ordinary elliptic curve, the $p$-adic sigma function. We use this result to give a short proof of a theorem of Kim characterizing integral points on elliptic curves in some cases under weaker assumptions. As a further application, we give new formulas to compute double Coleman integrals from tangential basepoints.

Picard-Fuchs equations of families of QM abelian surfaces

We describe an algorithm for computing the Picard-Fuchs equation for a family of twists of a fixed elliptic surface. We then apply this algorithm to obtain the equation for several examples, which are coming from families of Kummer surfaces over Shimura curves, as studied in our previous work. We use this to find correspondenced between the parameter spaces of our families and Shimura curves. These correspondences can sometimes be proved rigorously.

The syntomic regulator for $K_4$ of curves

Let $C$ be a curve defined over a discrete valuation field of characteristic zero where the residue field has positive characteristic. Assuming that $C$ has good reduction over the residue field, we compute the syntomic regulator on a certain part of $K_4^[(3)}(C)$. The result can be expressed in terms of $p$-adic polylogarithms and Coleman integration. We also compute the syntomic regulator on a certain part of $K_4^[(3)}(F)$ for the function field $F$ of $C$. The result can be expressed in terms of $p$-adic polylogarithms and Coleman integration, or by using a trilinear map ("triple index") on certain functions.
