Bianchi-I cosmology in quantum gravity

The exact renormalization group flow equations for gravity lead to quantum corrections of Newton's constant and cosmological constant. Using this we investigate the Bianchi-I cosmological model at late times. In particular, we obtain the scale factors in different directions, and observe that they eventually evolve into Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) universe for radiation. However, for stiff matter the universe shows a Kasner like behaviour. The presentation is based on our work published in \cite{Mandal:2019xlg}.

Scalar-Fermion Interaction as the Driver of Cosmic Acceleration

We argue that an interacting scalar-fermion distribution can be used to demonstrate the cosmic acceleration in General Relativity. The interaction is of Yukawa nature and it drives the fermion density to decay with cosmic time. The consistency of the model is established through, (a) a generalization of the Om(z) parameter, the present matter density contrast of the universe, and (b) a comparison of theoretical results with observational data, using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo code. A simple model of unified cosmic expansion history is also discussed. There are more than one instances where the universe goes through a transition between subsequent epochs with different patterns of cosmic expansion. These patterns impose some constraints on the scalar-fermion interaction profile and on the overall cosmological dynamics.

Spin gauge theory, duality and fermion pairing

We apply duality transformation to the Abelian Higgs model in 3+1 dimensions in the presence of electrons coupled to the gauge field. The Higgs field is in the symmetry broken phase, where flux strings can form. Dualization brings in an antisymmetric tensor potential $B_{μν}\,$, which couples to the electrons through a nonlocal interaction which can be interpreted as a coupling to the spin current. It also couples to the string worldsheet and gives rise to a string Higgs mechanism via the condensation of flux strings. In the phase where the $B_{μν}$ field is massless, the nonlocal interaction implies a linearly rising attractive force between the electrons, which can be interpreted as the result of a pair of strings joining the electrons.

Spin-flux attachment by dimensional reduction of vortices

The description of a system of vortices in terms of dual fields provides a window to new phases of the system. It was found recently that dualizing a 3+1-d boson-fermion system leads to a system of fermions and vortices interacting via a 2-form field through a non-local term. Here we explore some consequences of such an interaction when the degrees of freedom of the system are confined to a 2+1-d space-time. In particular, we show that the vortices in the 2+1-d system are attached to the fermions via their non-zero spin magnetic moment in a way similar to the phenomenon of flux attachment in Chern-Simons gauge theory coupled to matter. We also show that such flux attached particles exhibit fractional statistical behaviour like anyons. Thus our model provides a realization of anyons without Chern-Simons theory.

Cosmology of Bianchi type-I metric using renormalization group approach for quantum gravity

We study the anisotropic Bianchi type-I cosmological model at late times, taking into account quantum gravitational corrections in the formalism of the exact renormalization group flow of the effective average action for gravity. The cosmological evolution equations are derived by including the scale dependence of Newton's constant $G$ and cosmological constant $Λ$. We have considered the solutions of the flow equations for $G$ and $Λ$ at next to leading order in the infrared cutoff scale. Using these scale dependent $G$ and $Λ$ in Einstein equations for the Bianchi-I model, we obtain the scale factors in different directions. It is shown that the scale factors eventually evolve into FLRW universe for known matter like radiation. However, for dust and stiff matter we find that the universe need not evolve to the FLRW cosmology in general, but can also show Kasner type behaviour.

Emergent vortex-electron interaction from dualization

We consider the Abelian Higgs model in 3+1 dimensions with vortex lines, into which charged fermions are introduced. This could be viewed as a model of a type-II superconductor with unpaired electrons (or holes), analogous to the boson-fermion model of high-$T_c$ superconductors but one in which the bosons and fermions interact only through the electromagnetic gauge field. We investigate the dual formulation of this model, which is in terms of a massive antisymmetric tensor gauge field $B_{μν}$ mediating the interaction of the vortex lines. This field couples to the fermions through a nonlocal spin-gauge interaction term. We then calculate the quantum correction due to the fermions at one loop and show that due to the presence of this new nonlocal term a topological $B \wedge F$ interaction is induced in the effective action, leading to an increase in the mass of both the photon and the tensor gauge field. Additionally, we find a Coulomb potential between the electrons, but with a large dielectric constant generated by the one-loop effects.

Geometry creates inertia

The dynamics of fermions in curved spacetime is governed by a spin connection, a part of which is contorsion, an auxiliary field independent of the metric, without dynamics but fully expressible in terms of the axial current density of fermions. Its effect is the appearance of a quartic interaction involving all fermions. Contorsion can couple to left and right-handed fermions with different strengths, leading to an effective mass for fermions propagating on a background containing fermionic matter.

Alignment, reverse alignment, and wrong sign Yukawa couplings in two Higgs doublet models

We consider two Higgs doublet models with a softly broken U(1) symmetry, for various limiting values of the scalar mixing angles $α$ and $β$. These correspond to the Standard Model Higgs particle being the lighter CP-even scalar (alignment) or the heavier CP-even scalar (reverse alignment), and also the limit in which some of the Yukawa couplings of this particle are of the opposite sign from the vector boson couplings (wrong sign). In these limits we impose a criterion for naturalness by demanding that quadratic divergences cancel at one loop. We plot the allowed masses of the remaining physical scalars based on naturalness, stability, perturbative unitarity and constraints coming from the $ρ$ parameter. We also calculate the $h\to γγ$ decay rate in the wrong sign limit.

Quark ACM with topologically generated gluon mass

We investigate the effect of a small, gauge-invariant mass of the gluon on the anomalous chromomagnetic moment of quarks (ACM) by perturbative calculations at one loop level. The mass of the gluon is taken to have been generated via a topological mass generation mechanism, in which the gluon acquires a mass through its interaction with an antisymmetric tensor field $B_{μν}$. For a small gluon mass $(<10$ MeV), we calculate the ACM at momentum transfer $q^2=-M_Z^2$. We compare those with the ACM calculated for the gluon mass arising from a Proca mass term. We find that the ACM of up, down, strange and charm quarks vary significantly with the gluon mass, while the ACM of top and bottom quarks show negligible gluon mass dependence. The mechanism of gluon mass generation is most important for the strange quarks ACM, but not so much for the other quarks. We also show the results at $q^2=-m_t^2$. We find that the dependence on gluon mass at $q^2=-m_t^2$ is much less than at $q^2=-M_Z^2$ for all quarks.

4D Topological Mass by Gauging Spin

We propose a spin gauge field theory in which the curl of a Dirac fermion current density plays the role of the pseudovector charge density. In this field-theoretic model, spin interactions are mediated by a single scalar gauge boson in its antisymmetric tensor formulation. We show that these long range spin interactions induce a gauge invariant photon mass in the one-loop effective action. The fermion loop generates a coupling between photons and the spin gauge boson, which acquires thus charge. This coupling represents also an induced, gauge invariant, topological mass for the photons, leading to the Meissner effect. The one-loop effective equations of motion for the charged spin gauge boson are the London equations. We propose thus spin gauge interactions as an alternative, topological mechanism for superconductivity in which no spontaneous symmetry breaking is involved.

Masses of physical scalars in two Higgs doublet models

We find bounds on scalar masses resulting from a criterion of naturalness, in a broad class of two Higgs doublet models (2HDMs). Specifically, we assume the cancellation of quadratic divergences in what are called the type I, type II, lepton-specific and flipped 2HDMs, with an additional U(1) symmetry. This results in a set of relations among masses of the physical scalars and coupling constants, a generalization of the Veltman conditions of the Standard Model. Assuming that the lighter $CP$-even neutral Higgs particle is the observed scalar particle of mass $\sim$125 GeV, and imposing further the constraints from the electroweak T-parameter, stability, and perturbative unitarity, we calculate the range of the mass of each of the remaining physical scalars.

Twisted-Product Categorical Bundles

Categorical bundles provide a natural framework for gauge theories involving multiple gauge groups. Unlike the case of traditional bundles there are distinct notions of triviality, and hence also of local triviality, for categorical bundles. We study categorical principal bundles that are product bundles in the categorical sense, developing the relationship between functorial sections of such bundles and trivializations. We construct functorial cocycles with values in categorical groups using a suitable family of locally defined functions on the object space of the base category. Categorical product bundles being too rigid to give a widely applicable model for local triviality, we introduce the notion of a twisted-product categorical bundle. We relate such bundles to decorated categorical bundles that contain more information, specifically parallel transport data.

Anomalous chromomagnetic moment of quarks

We do a perturbative calculation of the anomalous chromomagnetic dipole moment of quarks at one-loop, also considering the effect of a small gauge-invariant mass of the gluon. We find partial agreement with a previous calculation, as well as a divergence. We explain these results by noting that perturbation theory is not valid at the energy scales where these calculations were done, and proceed to give the results at the $M_Z$ scale. We find significant variation, of the anomalous moment of the light quarks, as a function of gluon mass.

Kaluza Ansatz applied to Eddington inspired Born-Infeld Gravity

We apply Kaluza's procedure to Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld action in gravity in five dimensions. The resulting action contains, in addition to the usual four-dimensional actions for gravity and electromagnetism, nonlinear couplings between the electromagnetic field strength and curvature. Considering the spherically symmetric solution as an example we find the lowest order corrections for the Reissner-Nordström metric and the electromagnetic field.

Twisted actions of categorical groups

We develop a theory of twisted actions of categorical groups using a notion of semidirect product of categories. We work through numerous examples to demonstrate the power of these notions. Turning to representations, which are actions that respect vector space structures, we establish an analog of Schur's lemma in this context. Keeping new terminology to a minumum, we concentrate on examples exploring the essential new notions introduced.

Mass function and particle creation in Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime

We construct a mass or energy function for the non-Nariai class Schwarzschild-de Sitter black hole spacetime in the region between the black hole and the cosmological event horizons. The mass function is local, positive definite, continuous and increases monotonically with the radial distance from the black hole event horizon. We derive the Smarr formula using this mass function, and demonstrate that the mass function reproduces the two-temperature Schwarzschild-de Sitter black hole thermodynamics, along with a term corresponding to the negative pressure due to positive cosmological constant. We further give a field theoretic derivation of the particle creation by both the horizons and discuss its connection with the mass function.

Massive spin-2 and spin-1/2 no hair theorems for stationary axisymmetric black holes

We present a proof of the no hair theorems corresponding to free massive non-perturbative Pauli-Fierz spin-2 and perturbative massive spin-1/2 fields for stationary axisymmetric de Sitter black hole spacetimes of dimension four with two commuting Killing vector fields. The applicability of these results for asymptotically flat and anti-de Sitter spacetimes are also discussed.

Particle with non-Abelian charge: classical and quantum

We study the action for a non-Abelian charged particle in a non-Abelian background field in the worldline formalism, described by real bosonic variables, leading to the well known equations given by Wong. The isospin parts in the action can be viewed as the Lagrange multiplier term corresponding to a non-holonomic constraint restricting the isospins to be parallel transported. The path integration is performed over the isospin variables and as a result, the worldlines turn out to be constrained by the classical solutions for the isospins. We derive a wave equation from the path integral, constructed as the constrained Hamiltonian operator acting on the wave function. The operator ordering corresponding to the quantum Hamiltonian is found and verified by the inverse Weyl transformation.

Cosmic strings with positive $Λ$

We discuss cosmic Nielsen-Olesen strings in space-times endowed with a positive cosmological constant. For the cylindrically symmetric, static free cosmic string, we discuss the contribution of the cosmological constant to the angle deficit, and to the motion of the null/timelike geodesics. For a non-gravitating cosmic string in a Schwarzschild-de Sitter space-time, we discuss how a thin string can pierce the two horizons. We also present a metric which describes the exterior of a self gravitating thin string present in the Schwarzschild-de Sitter space-time.

On the existence of cosmological event horizon

We show that, for general static or axisymmetric stationary spacetimes, a cosmological Killing horizon exists only if $R_{ab}n^{a}n^{b}< 0$ for a hypersurface orthogonal timelike $n^{a}$, at least over some portion of the region of interest of the manifold. This implies violation of the strong energy condition by the matter fields, the simplest example of which is a positive cosmological constant.

Surface holonomy and gauge 2-group

Just as point objects are parallel transported along curves, giving holonomies, string-like objects are parallel transported along surfaces, giving surface holonomies. Composition of these surfaces correspond to products in a category theoretic generalization of the gauge group, called a 2-group. I consider two different ways of constructing surface holonomies, one by using a pair of one and two form connections, and another by using a pair of one-form connections. Both procedures result in the structure of a 2-group.

Vector-Tensor Duality

A dynamical non-abelian two-form potential gives masses to vector bosons via a topological coupling. Unlike in the abelian case, the two-form cannot be dualized to Goldstone bosons. Duality is restored by coupling a flat connection to the theory in a particular way, and the new action is then dualized to a non-linear sigma model. The presence of the flat connection is crucial, which saves the original mechanism of Higgs-free topological mass generation from being dualized to a sigma model.

The Dynamical Nonabelian Two-Form: BRST Quantization

When an antisymmetric tensor potential is coupled to the field strength of a gauge field via a $B\wedge F$ coupling and a kinetic term for $B$ is included, the gauge field develops an effective mass. The theory can be made invariant under a non-abelian vector gauge symmetry by introducing an auxiliary vector field. The covariant quantization of this theory requires ghosts for ghosts. The resultant theory including gauge fixing and ghost terms is BRST-invariant by construction, and therefore unitary. The construction of the BRST-invariant action is given for both abelian and non-abelian models of mass generation.
