AWESOME: Empowering Scalable Data Science on Social Media Data with an Optimized Tri-Store Data System

Modern data science applications increasingly use heterogeneous data sources and analytics. This has led to growing interest in polystore systems, especially analytical polystores. In this work, we focus on emerging multi-data model analytics workloads over social media data that fluidly straddle relational, graph, and text analytics. Instead of a generic polystore, we build a "tri-store" system that is more aware of the underlying data models to better optimize execution to improve scalability and runtime efficiency. We name our system AWESOME (Analytics WorkbEnch for SOcial MEdia). It features a powerful domain-specific language named ADIL. ADIL builds on top of underlying query engines (e.g., SQL and Cypher) and features native data types for succinctly specifying cross-engine queries and NLP operations, as well as automatic in-memory and query optimizations. Using real-world tri-model analytical workloads and datasets, we empirically demonstrate the functionalities of AWESOME for scalable data science over social media data and evaluate its efficiency.

Temporal Relation Extraction with a Graph-Based Deep Biaffine Attention Model

Temporal information extraction plays a critical role in natural language understanding. Previous systems have incorporated advanced neural language models and have successfully enhanced the accuracy of temporal information extraction tasks. However, these systems have two major shortcomings. First, they fail to make use of the two-sided nature of temporal relations in prediction. Second, they involve non-parallelizable pipelines in inference process that bring little performance gain. To this end, we propose a novel temporal information extraction model based on deep biaffine attention to extract temporal relationships between events in unstructured text efficiently and accurately. Our model is performant because we perform relation extraction tasks directly instead of considering event annotation as a prerequisite of relation extraction. Moreover, our architecture uses Multilayer Perceptrons (MLP) with biaffine attention to predict arcs and relation labels separately, improving relation detecting accuracy by exploiting the two-sided nature of temporal relationships. We experimentally demonstrate that our model achieves state-of-the-art performance in temporal relation extraction.

A Query-Driven System for Discovering Interesting Subgraphs in Social Media

Social media data are often modeled as heterogeneous graphs with multiple types of nodes and edges. We present a discovery algorithm that first chooses a "background" graph based on a user's analytical interest and then automatically discovers subgraphs that are structurally and content-wise distinctly different from the background graph. The technique combines the notion of a \texttt{group-by} operation on a graph and the notion of subjective interestingness, resulting in an automated discovery of interesting subgraphs. Our experiments on a socio-political database show the effectiveness of our technique.

An Algebraic Approach for High-level Text Analytics

Text analytical tasks like word embedding, phrase mining, and topic modeling, are placing increasing demands as well as challenges to existing database management systems. In this paper, we provide a novel algebraic approach based on associative arrays. Our data model and algebra can bring together relational operators and text operators, which enables interesting optimization opportunities for hybrid data sources that have both relational and textual data. We demonstrate its expressive power in text analytics using several real-world tasks.
