Defective annular semiconductor-superconductor photonic crystal

In this paper, the transfer matrix method is used to investigate the reflectance properties in a symmetric defective annular photonic crystal (APC) containing semiconductor, high-$T_c$ superconductor and a radial defect layer. Numerical results offer many noteworthy features that can be very useful in designing optical devices. In this regard, the geometric effects of alternate layers on the optical reflectance of our defective APC structure by changing the thickness of different layers would be investigated. Then, the possibility of controlling the spectral position of existed photonic band gaps (PBGs) and defect modes would be discussed by our analysis. In addition, it is found that the characteristics of the reflectance spectrum and subsequently the spectral position of PBG and defect mode are entirely independent on changes in the starting radius of the hollow core. This characteristic is very attractive to manufacturers, since increasing the size of the core radius would offer flexibility and simplicity of fabrication in producing optical devices. This study reveals that the optical reflectance of defective APCs is strongly dependent on azimuthal mode number. Therefore, our designed defective APC structure works as a perfect reflector for the considerable range of wavelength for higher azimuthal mode numbers. Lastly, our results show that by increase the temperature of superconductor layer both of the existed band gaps and defect mode show a red-shift trend by moving towards higher wavelengths. The proposed structure and related results can lead to gain valuable information for designing and fabrication of new types of annular Bragg resonators surrounding a radial defect and integrated visible waveguide devices like optical switches and filters.

Effects of loss factors on zero permeability and zero permittivity gaps in 1D photonic crystal containing DNG materials

The effects of electric and magnetic loss factors on zero-mu and zero-epsilon gaps in a one-dimensional lossy photonic crystal composed of double-negative and double-positive materials are theoretically investigated by employing the characteristic matrix method. This study contradicts the previous reports as it indicates that by applying the inevitable factors of electric and magnetic losses to the double-negative material, the zero-mu and zero-epsilon gaps appear simultaneously in the transmission spectrum, being independent of the incidence angle and polarizations. Moreover, the results show that these gaps appear not only for an oblique incidence but also in the case of normal incidence, and their appearance at the normal incidence is directly related to the magnetic and electric loss factors. Besides, the results indicate that as the loss factors and angle of incidence increase, the width of both gaps also increases.

Defect modes properties in periodic lossy multilayer containing negative index materials with symmetric and asymmetric geometric structures

In this paper the characteristic matrix method is used to study the propagation of electromagnetic waves through one-dimensional lossy photonic crystals composed of negative and positive refractive index material layers with symmetric and asymmetric geometric structures with a defect layer at the center of the structure. First, the positive index material defect layer is considered, and the effects of the polarization and the angle of incidence on the defect mode in the transmission spectra of the both structures are investigated. The results show that the number of the defect modes in the transmission spectra depends on the geometry (symmetric or asymmetric) of the structure. In addition, it is shown that the defect mode frequency increases as the angle of incidence increases. This property is independent of the geometry of the structure. Then, for normal incidence, the negative index material defect layer is considered, and the properties of defect modes for both structures are investigated. The results can lead to designing new types of transmission narrow filters.

Properties of defect modes in periodic lossy multilayer with negative index materials

Transmission properties of one-dimensional lossy photonic crystals composed of negative and positive refractive index layers with one lossless defect layer at the center of the crystal are investigated by the characteristic matrix method. The results show that as the refractive index and thickness of the defect layer increase the frequency of the defect mode decreases. In addition, it is shown that the frequency of the defect mode is sensitive to the incidence angle, polarization and physical properties of the defect layer but it is insensitive to the small lattice loss factor. The height of the defect mode is very sensitive to the loss factor, incidence angle, polarization, refractive index and thickness of the defect layer. It was also shown that the height and the width of the defect mode are affected by the number of the lattice period and the loss factor. The results can lead to designing new types of narrow filter structures and other optical devices.

Properties of the band gaps in one-dimensional ternary lossy photonic crystal containing double-negative materials

In this paper, theoretically, the characteristics matrix method is employed to investigate and compare the properties of the band gaps of the one-dimensional ternary and binary lossy photonic crystals which are composed of double-negative and -positive materials. This study shows that by varying the angle of incidence, the band gaps for TM and TE waves behave differently in both ternary and binary lossy structures. The results demonstrate that by increasing the angle of incidence for the TE wave, the width and the depth of zero-n, zero-μ, and Bragg gap increase in both ternary and binary structures. On the other hand, the enhancement of the angle of incidence for the TM wave, contributes to reduction of the width and the depth of the zero-n and Bragg gaps, and they finally disappear for incidence angles greater than 50 and 60 for the binary structure, and 40 and 45 for the ternary structures, respectively. In addition, the details of the edges of the band gaps variations as a function of incidence angle for both structures are studied.

Properties of the defect modes in 1D lossy photonic crystals containing two types of negative-index-material defects

In this paper, the characteristic matrix method is employed to theoretically investigate the propagation of electromagnetic waves through one-dimensional defective lossy photonic crystals (PCs) composed of negative index materials (NIMs) and positive index materials (PIMs). We consider symmetric and asymmetric geometric structures with two different types of NIM defect layers at the center of the structure. The effects of the polarization and the angle of incidence on the defect modes in the transmission spectra of both structures are investigated. The results show that the number of the defect modes within the photonic band gap (PBG) depends on the type of the NIM defect layer and is independent of the geometrical structure. Moreover, it is shown that the defect mode frequency increases as the angle of incidence increases. This property is also independent of the geometry of the structure. The results can lead to designing new types of narrowband and multichannel transmission filters.

Effects of normal and oblique incidence on zero-n gap in periodic lossy multilayer containing double-negative materials

In this paper the transmission of electromagnetic waves through a one-dimensional lossy photonic crystal consisting of layers with negative and positive refractive indices is investigated. The behavior and characteristics of the bandwidth, the depth and the central frequency of the zero-n gap for different incidence angles, polarization, loss factor and ratios of thickness of the layers are studied. The results show that the gap is very sensitive to the incidence angle, polarization and the thickness ratio, but it is nearly insensitive to small loss factor. Such properties are quite useful in designing new types of edge filters and other optical devices in microwave engineering.
