Gauge-flavon unification

In this paper we propose the idea that flavons can emerge from extra dimensional gauge fields, referred to as gauge-flavon unification (GFU) analogous to gauge-Higgs unification (GHU). We assume that there is a gauged family symmetry in extra dimensions and that the flavons are the extra dimensional components of the gauge field. This provides a simple mechanism to align the VEVs of the flavons through a combination of Wilson lines and orbifold symmetry breaking. We present some simple 5d examples of GFU based on $SO(3)$ and $SU(4)$ gauged family symmetry, the latter case yielding $SU(3)\times U(1)$ gauged family symmetry in 4d, broken by triplet and antitriplet flavons, with effective couplings to fermions. We also present a general formalism for Wilson lines and orbifolds, in any number of dimensions, including non-commutative aspects Wilson lines, which may be useful for aligning additional flavons as required for realistic models.

A new radiative neutrino mass generation mechanism with higher dimensional scalar representations and custodial symmetry

A new realization for radiative neutrino mass generation is presented. Based on the requirement of tree-level custodial symmetry and the introduction of higher (greater than two) dimensional representations for scalar fields, a specific scenario with a scalar septet is presented that generates neutrino Majorana masses radiatively. This is accomplished through an eleven dimensional operator that requires the addition of several scalar fields and a SU(2) 5-plet of new fermions, together with a Z2 that guarantees the preservation of custodial symmetry. The phenomenology of the setup is rather rich and includes a dark matter candidate

Electroweak phase transition in a model with gauged lepton number

In this work we study the electroweak phase transition in a model with gauged lepton number. Here, a family of vector-like leptons is required in order to cancel the gauge anomalies. Furthermore, these leptons can play an important role in the transition process. We find that this framework is able to provide a strong transition, but only for a very limited number of cases.

Magnetic dipole moments for composite dark matter

We study neutral dark matter candidates with a nonzero magnetic dipole moment. We assume that they are composite states of new fermions related to the strong phase of a new gauge interaction. In particular, invoking a dark flavor symmetry, we analyze the composition structure of viable candidates depending on the assignations of hypercharge and the multiplets associated to the fundamental constituents of the extended sector. We determine the magnetic dipole moments for the neutral composite states in terms of their constituents masses.

CP violating phase from charged-lepton mixing

A model independent analysis of the leptonic Dirac CP-violating phase (δ) is presented. The analysis uses the experimentally determined values of the mixing angles in the lepton mixing matrix in order to explore the allowed values for δ and possible general forms for the charged lepton mixing matrix. This is done under two general assumptions: 1) that the mixing matrix in the neutrino sector is the so-called tribimaximal matrix and hence the non zero value for θ13 arises due to the mixing matrix in the charged lepton sector and 2) the charged lepton mixing matrix is parametrized in terms of three angles and one phase. It is found that any value of δ is still consistent with the data and that, considering the assumptions above, regardless of the value for δ, the 1-3 mixing angle in the charged lepton sector is small but non zero and the 2-3 mixing angle can take values in only two possible small ranges around 0 and π/2 respectively.

Dirac neutrinos from flavor symmetry

We present a model where Majorana neutrino mass terms are forbidden by the flavor symmetry group Delta(27). Neutrinos are Dirac fermions and their masses arise in the same way as that of the charged fermions, due to very small Yukawa couplings. The model fits current neutrino oscillation data and correlates the octant of the atmospheric angle with the magnitude of the lightest neutrino mass, with maximal mixing excluded for any neutrino mass

The right generations

The Standard Model has three generations of fermions and although it does not contain any explicit reason for this, the existence of additional generations is now very constrained by experiment. Present measurements are saturating perturbative unitarity limits. The main idea of this work is to show that those restrictions can be relaxed if the new generations experience different interactions. This new setup leads to the presence of additional stable degrees of freedom that give rise to a very rich phenomenology for cosmology, astrophysics and particle physics. The stability is a consequence of the conservation of new accidental baryon and lepton numbers. We present an explicit example by introducing a fourth generation charged under a new $SU(2)_R$ gauge interaction instead of the standard $SU(2)_L$. The simplest implementations lead to models that contain stable quarks, leptons and neutrinos. We show that these new particles can have a wide range of masses within a non-standard cosmological set-up. Indeed, the new neutrinos (and {\it neutral leptons}) constitute viable dark matter candidates if they are the lightest of these new particles.

Yukawa textures or dark doublets from Two Higgs Doublet Models with $Z_3$ symmetry

The effect of $Z_3$ symmetry on the general Two Higgs Doublet Model is explored. Of particular interest is the question of what can a $Z_3$ symmetry do beyond the usual case with $Z_2$. There are two independent scenarios that give some interesting results: first, by giving non-trivial charges to the Standard Model fermions, it is possible to use the $Z_3$ symmetry of the scalar potential to generate potentially useful Yukawa textures. This is not possible with $Z_2$. A series of possibilities is presented where their viability is addressed and a specific example in the quark sector is given for concreteness. The second venue of interest is in the area of inert doublets. It is shown that by considering the Standard Model plus two additional inert doublet scalars, i.e. a Dark Two Higgs Doublet Model, together with $Z_3$, a scenario can be obtained that differs from the $Z_2$ case. Some general comments are presented on the potentially interesting phenomenology of such model.

Neutrino masses generation in a Z_4 model

We present a renormalizable flavor model with Z_4 as flavor symmetry in both the quark and lepton sectors. The model is constructed with a minimal approach and no-right handed neutrinos are introduced. In this approach a minimum number of two SU(2) Higgs doublets and one scalar singlet are required in order to obtain the Nearest Neighbor Interaction form for charged fermions and to generate neutrino masses radiatively. For the quark sector we follow the charge assignations made by Branco et. al. in reference [1]. All fermion masses and mixing angles in the model are in agreement with current experimental data and only the inverted hierarchy for the neutrino mass spectrum is allowed. Since neutrinos are Majorana the contribution to neutrinoless double beta decay is also analyzed.

Non-diagonal charged lepton mass matrix and non-zero $θ_{13}$

Assuming that the neutrino mass matrix is diagonalized by the tribimaximal mixing matrix, we explore the textures for the charged lepton mass matrix that render an $U_{PMNS}$ lepton mixing matrix consistent with data. In particular we are interested in finding the textures with the maximum number of zeros. We explore the cases of real matrices with three and four zeros and find that only ten matrices with three zeros provide solutions in agreement with data. We present the successful Yukawa textures including the relative sizes of their non-zero entries as well as some new and interesting relations among the entries of these textures in terms of the charged lepton masses. We also show that these relations can be obtained directly from a parametrization of the charged lepton mixing matrix $U_l$.

Three generations of Higgses and the cyclic groups

Multi Higgs doublet models are interesting extensions of the Standard Model that can be related to flavor. The reason is that most flavor models usually involve the presence of several additional scalar fields. In this work we present an analysis that shows that for renormalizable flavor models based on the cyclic group of order $N$, if there is one flavored SU(2) double Higgs per generation, the smallest $N$ that can be used to reproduce the Nearest-Neighbor-Interaction texture for the quark mass matrices is N=5. Results for the Higgs spectrum and consistency under $K - \bar{K}$ mixing in a specific model with $Z_5$ are also presented.

Z_4 flavor model in Randall-Sundrum model 1

Randall Sundrum models provide a possible explanation of (gauge-gravity) hierarchy, whereas discrete symmetry flavor groups yield a possible description of the texture of Standard Model fermion masses. We use both these ingredients to propose a five-dimensional extension of the Standard Model where the mass hierarchy of the four-dimensional effective field theory is obtained only using localizations parameters of order 1. We consider a bulk custodial gauge symmetry group together with an Abelian $Z_4$ group: the model turns out to yield a rather minimal extension of the SM as it only requires two brane Higgs fields to provide the desired Yukawa interactions and the required spontaneous symmetry breaking pattern. In fact, the presence of an extra-dimension allows the use of the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism to contribute to the breaking of the bulk custodial group down to the SM gauge symmetry. Moreover, no right-handed neutrinos are present and neutrino masses are generated radiatively with the help of a bulk charged scalar field that provides the Lepton-number violation. Using experimental inputs from the Global Neutrino Analysis and recent Daya Bay results, a numerical analysis is performed and allowed parameter regions are displayed.

Model of flavor with quaternion symmetry

We present a renormalizable fermion mass model based on the symmetry $Q_4$ that accommodates all fermion masses and mixing angles in both the quark and lepton sectors. It requires the presence of only four SU(2) doublet scalar fields transforming non trivially under the flavor symmetry and the assumption of an alignment between first and second generation Yukawa couplings. No right-handed neutrinos are present in the model and neutrino masses are generated radiatively through the introduction of two additional SU(2) singlet fields charged under both hypercharge and lepton number.

New Higgs signals from a multi-scalar model with flavor symmetry

A scenario is presented where the $s$, $c$, and $b$ quark fusion Higgs production cross sections are enhanced with respect to those of the Standard Model. In particular the $c$ quark fusion production is very important and can account for a significant contribution at the Large Hadron Collider. The light Higgs couplings to vector bosons are sufficiently suppressed to allow its mass to lie below the LEP bound of 115 GeV and due to enhanced couplings to second family fermions, the Higgs decay to $μ$ pairs is large enough to be detectable. This is accomplished with a model incorporating three Higgs doublets charged under a flavor symmetry.

A renormalizable fermion mass model with the double tetrahedral group

We present a renormalizable model for fermion masses based solely on the double tetrahedral group T'. It does not include right handed neutrinos and majorana neutrino masses are generated radiatively. The scalar sector of the model involves three SU(2) doublets and a set of lepton number violating (charged) scalars needed to give mass to the neutrinos. In the quark sector the model leads to a Fritzsch type scenario that is consistent with all the existing data. In the lepton sector, the model leads to tribimaximal (and near tribimaximal) mixing, and an inverted mass hierarchy.

Constraints on realistic Gauge-Higgs unified models

We investigate the general group structure of gauge-Higgs unified models. We find that a given embedding of the \sm\ gauge group will imply the presence of additional light vectors, except for a small set of special cases, which we determine; the arguments presented are independent of the compactification scheme. For this set of models we then find those that can both accommodate quarks and have a vanishing oblique T-parameter at tree-level. We show that none of the resulting models can have $|\sw| \sim1/2 $ (the sine of the weak-mixing angle) at tree-level and briefly discuss possible solutions to this problem.

Dark Left-Right Gauge Model: SU(2)_R Phenomenology

In the recently proposed dark left-right gauge model of particle interactions, the left-handed fermion doublet $(ν,e)_L$ is connected to its right-handed counterpart $(n,e)_R$ through a scalar bidoublet, but $ν_L$ couples to $n_R$ only through $ϕ_1^0$ which has no vacuum expectation value. The usual R parity, i.e. $R = (-)^{3B+L+2j}$, can be defined for this nonsupersymmetric model so that both $n$ and $Φ_1$ are odd together with $W_R^\pm$. The lightest $n$ is thus a viable dark-matter candidate (scotino). Here we explore the phenomenology associated with the $SU(2)_R$ gauge group of this model, which allows it to appear at the TeV energy scale. The exciting possibility of $Z' \to 8$ charged leptons is discussed.

Higher-dimensional Higgs Representations in SGUT models

Supersymmetric Grand Unified Theories (SGUTs) have achieved some degree of success, already present in the minimal models (with SU(5) or SO(10)). However, there are open problems that suggest the need to incorporate more elaborate constructions, specifically the use of higher-dimensional representations in the Higgs sector. For example, a $45$ representation of SU(5) is often included to obtain correct mass relations for the first and second families of d-type quarks and leptons. When one adds these higher-dimensional Higgs representations one must verify the cancellation of anomalies associated to their fermionic partners. One possible choice, free of anomalies, include both $45,\overline{45}$ representations to cancel anomalies. We review the necessary conditions for the cancellation of anomalies and discuss the different possibilities for supersymmetric SU(5) models. Alternative anomaly-free combinations of Higgs representations, beyond the usual vectorlike choice, are identified, and it is shown that their corresponding $β$ functions are not equivalent. Although the unification of gauge couplings is not affected, the introduction of multidimensional representations leads to different scenarios for the perturbative validity of the theory up to the Planck scale. We study the effect on the evolution of the gauge coupling up to the Planck scale due to the different sets of fields and representations that can render an anomaly-free model.

Electroweak scale neutrinos and decaying dark matter

We explore the scalar phenomenology of a model of electroweak scale neutrinos that incorporates the presence of a lepton number violating singlet scalar. An analysis of the pseudoscalar-Majoron field associated to this singlet field is carried out in order to verify the viability of the model and to restrict its parameter space. In particular we study the Majoron decay $J \to νν$ and use the bounds on the Majoron mass and width obtained in a modified Majoron Decaying Dark Matter scenario.

Implications of the discovery of a Higgs triplet on electroweak right-handed neutrinos

Electroweak scale active right-handed neutrinos such as those proposed in a recent model necessitate the enlargement of the SM Higgs sector to include Higgs triplets with doubly charged scalars. The search for and constraints on such Higgs sector has implications not only on the nature of the electroweak symmetry breaking but also on the possibility of testing the seesaw mechanism at colliders such as the LHC and the ILC.

Flavor Symmetries in Extra Dimensions

We present a class of models of flavor that rely on the use of flavor symmetries and the Froggart-Nielsen mechanism in extra dimensions. The particle content is that of the standard model plus an additional flavon field; all the fields propagate in universal extra dimensions and the flavor scale is associated with the cutoff of the theory, which in 5D is $\sim 10$ TeV. The Yukawa matrices are generated by higher dimension operators involving flavon fields, whose vacuum expectation values break the flavor symmetry. We apply this framework and present a specific 5D model based on a discrete local symmetry that reproduces all fermion masses and mixing angles both in the quark and charged lepton sectors.

Improved Lindstedt-Poincare method for the solution of nonlinear problems

We apply the Linear Delta Expansion (LDE) to the Lindstedt-Poincare (``distorted time'') method to find improved approximate solutions to nonlinear problems. We find that our method works very well for a wide range of parameters in the case of the anharmonic oscillator (Duffing equation) and of the non-linear pendulum. The approximate solutions found with this method are better behaved and converge more rapidly to the exact ones than in the simple Lindstedt-Poincaré method.

Models of Flavor with Discrete Symmetries

In an attempt to understand the observed patterns of lepton and quark masses, models invoking a flavor symmetry $G_f$, under which the Standard Model generations are charged, have been proposed. One particularly successful symmetry, U(2), has been extensively discussed in the literature. The Yukawa matrices in models based on this symmetry reproduce the observed mass ratios in the lepton and quark sectors. The features of the symmetry that determine the texture of the Yukawa matrices can be found in other symmetries as well. We present a model based on a minimal, non-Abelian discrete symmetry that reproduces the Yukawa matrices associated with U(2) theories of flavor. In addition to reproducing the mass and mixing angle relations obtained in such theories, the different representation structure of our new horizontal symmetry allows for solutions to the solar and atmospheric neutrino problems.

Orthogonal U(1)'s, Proton Stability and Extra Dimensions

In models with a low quantum gravity scale, one might expect that all operators consistent with gauge symmetries are present in the low-energy effective theory. If this is the case, some mechanism must be present to adequately suppress operators that violate baryon number. Here we explore the possibility that the desired suppression is a consequence of an additional, spontaneously-broken, non-anomalous U(1) symmetry that is orthogonal to hypercharge. We show that successful models can be constructed in which the additional particle content necessary to cancel anomalies is minimal, and compatible with the constraints from precision electroweak measurements and gauge unification. If unification is sacrificed, and only the new U(1) and its associated Higgs fields live in the bulk, it is possible that the gauge field zero mode and first few Kaluza-Klein excitations lie within the kinematic reach of the Tevatron. For gauge couplings not much smaller than that of hypercharge, we show that these highly leptophobic states could evade detection at Run I, but be discovered at Run II. Our scenario presents an alternative to the `cartographic' solution to baryon number violation in which leptons and quarks are separated in an extra dimension.

U(2) Flavor Physics without U(2) Symmetry

We present a model of fermion masses based on a minimal, non-Abelian discrete symmetry that reproduces the Yukawa matrices usually associated with U(2) theories of flavor. Mass and mixing angle relations that follow from the simple form of the quark and charged lepton Yukawa textures are therefore common to both theories. We show that the differing representation structure of our horizontal symmetry allows for new solutions to the solar and atmospheric neutrino problems that do not involve modification of the original charged fermion Yukawa textures, or the introduction of sterile neutrinos.
