Post-inflationary GW production in generic higher (infinite) derivative gravity

Gravity can be embedded into a renormalizable theory by means of adding quadratic in curvature terms. However, this at first leads to the presence of the Weyl ghost. It is possible to get rid of this ghost if the locality assumption is weakened and the propagator of the graviton is represented by an entire function of the d'Alembertian operator without new poles and zeros. Models of this type admit a cosmological solution describing the $R^2$, or Starobinsky, inflation. We study graviton production after inflation in this model and show that it is negligible despite the presence of the higher derivative operators which could potentially cause instabilities.

Unitarity of Minkowski non-local theories made explicit

In this work we explicitly show that the perturbative unitarity of analytic infinite derivative (AID) scalar field theories can be achieved using a modified prescription for computing scattering amplitudes. The crux of the new prescription is the analytic continuation of a result obtained in the Euclidean signature to the Minkowski external momenta. We intensively elaborate an example of a non-local $ϕ^4$ model for various infinite derivative operators. General UV properties of amplitudes in non-local theories are discussed.

Non-Gaussianities and tensor-to-scalar ratio in non-local $R^{2}$-like inflation

In this paper we will study $R^2$-like inflation in a non-local modification of gravity which contains quadratic in Ricci scalar and Weyl tensor terms with analytic infinite derivative form-factors in the action. It is known that the inflationary solution of the local $R+R^2$ gravity remains a particular exact solution in this model. It was shown earlier that the power spectrum of scalar perturbations generated during inflation in the non-local setup remains the same as in the local $R+R^2$ inflation, whereas the power spectrum of tensor perturbations gets modified due to the non-local Weyl tensor squared term. In the present paper we go beyond 2-point correlators and compute the non-Gaussian parameter $f_{NL}$ related to 3-point correlations generated during inflation, which we found to be different from those in the original local inflationary model and scenarios alike based on a local gravity. We evaluate non-local corrections to the scalar bi-spectrum which give non-zero contributions to squeezed, equilateral and orthogonal configurations. We show that $f_{NL}\sim O(1)$ with an arbitrary sign is achievable in this model based on the choice of form-factors and the scale of non-locality. We present the predictions for the tensor-to-scalar ratio, $r$, and the tensor tilt, $n_t$. In contrast to standard inflation in a local gravity, here the possibility $n_t$>0 is not excluded. Thus, future CMB data can probe non-local behaviour of gravity at high space-time curvatures.

Gravitational theories with stable (anti-)de Sitter backgrounds

In this article we will construct the most general torsion-free parity-invariant covariant theory of gravity that is free from ghost-like and tachyonic nstabilities around constant curvature space-times in four dimensions. Specifically, this includes the Minkowski, de Sitter and anti-de Sitter backgrounds. We will first argue in details how starting from a general covariant action for the metric one arrives at an "equivalent" action that at most contains terms that are quadratic in curvatures but nevertheless is sufficient for the purpose of studying stability of the original action. We will then briefly discuss how such a "quadratic curvature action" can be decomposed in a covariant formalism into separate sectors involving the tensor, vector and scalar modes of the metric tensor; most of the details of the analysis however, will be presented in an accompanying paper. We will find that only the transverse and trace-less spin-2 graviton with its two helicity states and possibly a spin-0 Brans-Dicke type scalar degree of freedom are left to propagate in 4 dimensions. This will also enable us to arrive at the consistency conditions required to make the theory perturbatively stable around constant curvature backgrounds. This will be included as a chapter in the book entitled "At the Frontier of Spacetime - Scalar-Tensor Theory, Bells Inequality, Machs Principle, Exotic Smoothness" (Springer 2016)

Occurrence of exact $R^2$ inflation in non-local UV-complete gravity

The $R+R^2$, shortly named "$R^2$" ("Starobinsky") inflationary model, represents a fully consistent example of a one-parameter inflationary scenario. This model has a "graceful exit" from inflation and provides a mechanism for subsequent creation and final thermalization of the standard matter. Moreover, it produces a very good fit of the observed spectrum of primordial perturbations. In the present paper we show explicitly that the $R^2$ inflationary spacetime is an exact solution of a range of weakly non-local (quasi-polynomial) gravitational theories, which provide an ultraviolet completion of the $R^2$ theory. These theories are ghost-free, super-renormalizable or finite at quantum level, and perturbatively unitary. Their spectrum consists of the graviton and the scalaron that is responsible for driving the inflation. Notably, any further extension of the spectrum leads to propagating ghost degrees of freedom. We are aimed at presenting a detailed construction of such theories in the so called Weyl basis. Further, we give a special account to the cosmological implications of this theory by considering perturbations during inflation. The highlight of the non-local model is the prediction of a modified, in comparison to a local $R^2$ model, value for the ratio of tensor and scalar power spectra $r$, depending on the parameters of the theory. The relevant parameters are under control to be successfully confronted with existing observational data. Furthermore, the modified $r$ can surely meet future observational constraints.

Cosmological perturbations in non-local higher-derivative gravity

We study cosmological perturbations in a non-local higher-derivative model of gravity introduced by Biswas, Mazumdar and Siegel. We extend previous work, which had focused on classical scalar perturbations around a cosine hyperbolic bounce solution, in three ways. First, we point out the existence of a Starobinsky solution in this model, which is more attractive from a phenomenological point of view (even though it has no bounce). Second, we study classical vector and tensor perturbations. Third, we show how to quantize scalar and tensor perturbations in a de Sitter phase (for choices of parameters such that the model is ghost-free). Our results show that the model is well-behaved at this level, and are very similar to corresponding results in local $f(R)$ models. In particular, for the Starobinsky solution of non-local higher-derivative gravity, we find the same tensor-to-scalar ratio as for the conventional Starobinsky model.

Generalized ghost-free quadratic curvature gravity

In this paper we study the most general covariant action of gravity up to terms that are quadratic in curvature. In particular this includes non-local, infinite derivative theories of gravity which are ghost-free and exhibit asymptotic freedom in the ultraviolet. We provide a detailed algorithm for deriving the equations of motion for such actions containing an arbitrary number of the covariant D'Alembertian operators, and this is our main result. We also perform a number of tests on the field equations we derive, including checking the Bianchi identities and the weak-field limit. Lastly, we consider the special subclass of ghost and asymptotically free theories of gravity by way of an example.

Geodesic completeness and homogeneity condition for cosmic inflation

There are two disjointed problems in cosmology within General Relativity (GR), which can be addressed simultaneously by studying the nature of geodesics around $t\rightarrow 0$, where $t$ is the physical time. One is related to the past geodesic completeness of the inflationary trajectory due to the presence of a cosmological singularity, and the other one is related to the homogeneity condition required to inflate a local space-time patch of the universe. We will show that both the problems have a common origin, arising from how the causal structure of null and timelike geodesics are structured within GR. In particular, we will show how a non-local extension of GR can address both problems, while satisfying the null energy condition for the matter sources.

Holographic Thermalization from Kerr-AdS

We study thermalization of a strongly coupled theory holographically dual to a thin shell of null dust with non-zero angular momentum collapsing to Kerr-AdS. We calculate thermalization time for two point correlation functions. It happens that in the 3-dimensional case the thermalization time is just proportional to the distance between points where the correlator is evaluated. This is a very surprising and rather unexpected generalization of the same relation in the case of zero momentum.

Stable analytic bounce in non-local Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet cosmology

We consider the most general quadratic in curvature stringy motivated non-local action for the modified Einstein's gravity. We present exact analytic cosmological solutions including the bouncing ones and develop the relevant techniques for the further study of this type of models. We also elaborate on the perturbation formalism and argue that the found bouncing solution is stable during the bounce phase.

Cosmological perturbations in SFT inspired non-local scalar field models

We study cosmological perturbations in models with a single non-local scalar field originating from the string field theory description of the rolling tachyon dynamics. We construct the equation for the energy density perturbations of the non-local scalar field and explicitly prove that for the free field it is identical to a system of local cosmological perturbation equations in a particular model with multiple (maybe infinitely many) local free scalar fields.

On bouncing solutions in non-local gravity

A non-local modified gravity model with an analytic function of the d'Alembert operator is considered. This model has been recently proposed as a possible way of resolving the singularities problem in cosmology. We present an exact bouncing solution, which is simpler compared to the already known one in this model in the sense it does not require an additional matter to satisfy all the gravitational equations.

Stable bounce and inflation in non-local higher derivative cosmology

One of the greatest problems of primordial inflation is that the inflationary space-time is past-incomplete. This is mainly because Einstein's GR suffers from a space-like Big Bang singularity. It has recently been shown that ghost-free, non-local higher-derivative ultra-violet modifications of Einstein's gravity may be able to resolve the cosmological Big Bang singularity via a non-singular bounce. Within the framework of such non-local cosmological models, we are going to study both sub- and super-Hubble perturbations around an inflationary trajectory which is preceded by the Big Bounce in the past, and demonstrate that the inflationary trajectory has an ultra-violet completion and that perturbations do not suffer from any pathologies.

Analysis of scalar perturbations in cosmological models with a non-local scalar field

We develop the cosmological perturbations formalism in models with a single non-local scalar field originating from the string field theory description of the rolling tachyon dynamics. We construct the equation for the energy density perturbations of the non-local scalar field in the presence of the arbitrary potential and formulate the local system of equations for perturbations in the linearized model when both simple and double roots of the characteristic equation are present. We carry out the general analysis related to the curvature and entropy perturbations and consider the most specific example of perturbations when important quantities in the model become complex.

Perturbative stability of SFT-based cosmological models

We review the appearance of multiple scalar fields in linearized SFT based cosmological models with a single non-local scalar field. Some of these local fields are canonical real scalar fields and some are complex fields with unusual coupling. These systems only admit numerical or approximate analysis. We introduce a modified potential for multiple scalar fields that makes the system exactly solvable in the cosmological context of Friedmann equations and at the same time preserves the asymptotic behavior expected from SFT. The main part of the paper consists of the analysis of inhomogeneous cosmological perturbations in this system. We show numerically that perturbations corresponding to the new type of complex fields always vanish. As an example of application of this model we consider an explicit construction of the phantom divide crossing and prove the perturbative stability of this process at the linear order. The issue of ghosts and ways to resolve it are briefly discussed.

Multi-scalar field cosmology from SFT: an exactly solvable approximation

We consider the appearance of multiple scalar fields in SFT inspired non-local models with a single scalar field at late times. In this regime all the scalar fields are free. This system minimally coupled to gravity can be analyzed approximately or numerically. The main result of this note is the introduction of an exactly solvable model which obeys an exact solution in the cosmological context for the Friedmann equations and that reproduces the behavior expected from SFT in the asymptotic regime. Different applications of such a potential to multi-field cosmological models are discussed.

SFT non-locality in cosmology: solutions, perturbations and observational evidences

In this note cosmological models coming out of the String Field Theory (SFT) in application to the Dark Energy are reviewed. A way of constructing solutions in the case of linear models is outlined, cosmological perturbations and observational evidences of such models are explored. We explicitly demonstrate the stability of the system at the linear order in the most typical configuration.

Non-local SFT Tachyon and Cosmology

Cosmological scenarios built upon the generalized non-local String Field Theory and $p$-adic tachyons are examined. A general kinetic operator involving an infinite number of derivatives is studied as well as arbitrary parameter $p$. The late time dynamics of just the tachyon around the non-perturbative vacuum is shown to leave the cosmology trivial. A late time behavior of the tachyon and the scale factor of the FRW metric in the presence of the cosmological constant or a perfect fluid with $w>-1$ is constructed explicitly and a possibility of non-vanishing oscillations of the total effective state parameter around the phantom divide is proven.
