Electrically tunable nonrigid moire exciton polariton supersolids at room temperature

A supersolid is a macroscopic quantum state which sustains superfluid and crystallizing structure together after breaking the U(1) symmetry and translational symmetry. On the other hand, a moire pattern can form by superimposing two periodic structures along a particular direction. Up to now, supersolids and moire states are disconnected from each other. In this work we show that exciton polariton supersolids can form moire states in a double degenerate parametric scattering process which creates two constituted supersolids with different periods in a liquid crystal microcavity. In addition, we demonstrate the nonrigidity of the moire exciton polariton supersolids by electrically tuning the wavevector and period of one supersolid component with another one being fixed. Our work finds a simple way to link moire states and supersolids, which offers to study nontrivial physics emerging from the combination of moire lattices and supersolids which can be electrically tuned at room temperature.

Acoustic Black Holes in a Shock-Wave Exciton-Polariton Condensate

We demonstrate the spontaneous formation of acoustic black holes in exciton-polariton condensates triggered by discontinuous Riemann-type initial conditions. Starting from a quasi-conservative Gross-Pitaevskii model, we show that nonlinear dispersive shock waves naturally generate spatial regions where the local flow velocity exceeds the speed of sound, creating a self-induced transonic interface that functions as an acoustic horizon. Unlike previous schemes relying on externally engineered potentials or pump-loss landscapes, our approach reveals that the intrinsic nonlinear hydrodynamics of polariton fluids alone can lead to horizon formation. Using Whitham modulation theory and numerical simulations, we characterize the transition between subsonic and supersonic regimes and estimate the corresponding surface gravity and Hawking temperature. This mechanism opens a new route toward realizing polariton black holes and studying analogue gravitational effects, including Hawking-like emission, in Bose-Einstein quantum liquids.

Ballistic transport of a polariton ring condensate with spin precession

It is now routine to make Bose-Einstein condensates of polaritons with long enough lifetime and low enough disorder to travel ballistically for hundreds of microns in quasi-one-dimensional (1D) wires. We present observations of a polariton condensate injected at one point in a quasi-1D ring, with a well-defined initial velocity and direction. A clear precession of the circular polarization is seen, which arises from an effective spin-orbit coupling term in the Hamiltonian. Our theoretical model accurately predicts the experimentally observed behavior, and shows that "zitterbewegung" behavior plays a role in the motion of the polaritons.

Spinor superfluid currents of exciton-polaritons on a split-ring

Recently, split-ring bosonic condensates of exciton polaritons have been proposed for realisation of qubits. We formulate an analytical model of a polariton condensate in a one-dimensional ring split by a delta-function potential. The persistent current is stopped by the potential defect embedded in a scalar condensate of non-interacting particles, however, it reappears in the presence of an up-critical non-linearity. The nonlinear supercurrents are characterised by fractional orbital momenta while their eigenfunctions may feature grey or dark solitons. The coupling between the spin and the orbital angular momentum of a spinor condensate affects persistent currents crucially. We show that the spin-orbit interaction (SOI) induces the net superfluid current in the condensate with a spatially uniform spin polarisation. We also find solutions where the SOI-induced currents of two spin components of the condensate propagate in opposite directions. The corresponding states of spinor condensates obey a combined mirror reflection and the spin-flip symmetry.

Femtosecond dynamics of a polariton bosonic cascade at room temperature

Whispering gallery modes in a microwire are characterized by a nearly equidistant energy spectrum. In the strong exciton-photon coupling regime, this system represents a bosonic cascade: a ladder of discrete energy levels that sustains stimulated transitions between neighboring steps. In this work, by using femtosecond angle-resolved spectroscopic imaging technique, the ultrafast dynamics of polaritons in a bosonic cascade based on a one-dimensional ZnO whispering gallery microcavity is explicitly visualized. Clear ladder-form build-up process from higher to lower energy branches of the polariton condensates are observed, which are well reproduced by modeling using rate equations. Moreover, the polariton parametric scattering dynamics are distinguished on a timescale of hundreds of femtoseconds. Our understanding of the femtosecond condensation and scattering dynamics paves the way towards ultrafast coherent control of polaritons at room temperature, which will make it promising for high-speed all-optical integrated applications.

Exciton energy spectra in polyyne chains

Recently, we have experimentally observed signatures of sharp exciton peaks in the photoluminescence spectra of bundles of monoatomic carbon chains stabilized by gold nanoparticles and deposited on a glass substrate. Here, we estimate the characteristic energies of excitonic transitions in this complex quasi-one-dimensional nano-system with use of the variational method. We show that the characteristic energy scale for the experimentally observed excitonic fine structure is governed by the interplay between the hopping energy in a Van der Waals quasicrystal formed by parallel carbon chains, the neutral-charged exciton splitting and the positive-negative trion splitting. These three characteristic energies are an order of magnitude lower than the direct exciton binding energy.

Exciton radiative lifetime in a monoatomic carbon chain

Linear carbon-based materials such as polyyne and cumulene oligomers provide a versatile platform for nano-physics and engineering. Direct gap quasi-1D polyyne structures are promising for the observation of strong and unusual excitonic eects arising due to the two-dimensional quantum connement. Recently, we reported on the observation of sharp exciton peaks in low temperature photoluminescence spectra of polyyne chains. Here, we analyse the time-resolved optical response of this system. We extend the non-local dielectric response theory to predict the exciton radiative lifetime dependence on the band-gap value and on the length of the chain. A good agreement between the experiment and the theory is achieved.

Manipulation of room-temperature Valley-Coherent Exciton-Polaritons in atomically thin crystals by real and artificial magnetic fields

Strong spin-orbit coupling and inversion symmetry breaking in transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers yield the intriguing effects of valley-dependent optical selection rules. As such, it is possible to substantially polarize valley excitons with chiral light and furthermore create coherent superpositions of K and K- polarized states. Yet, at ambient conditions dephasing usually becomes too dominant, and valley coherence typically is not observable. Here, we demonstrate that valley coherence is, however, clearly observable for a single monolayer of WSe2, if it is strongly coupled to the optical mode of a high quality factor microcavity. The azimuthal vector, representing the phase of the valley coherent superposition, can be directly manipulated by applying magnetic fields, and furthermore, it sensibly reacts to the polarization anisotropy of the cavity which represents an artificial magnetic field. Our results are in qualitative and quantitative agreement with our model based on pseudospin rate equations, accounting for both effects of real and pseudo-magnetic fields.

Split-ring polariton condensates as macroscopic two-level quantum systems

Superposition states of circular currents of exciton-polaritons mimic the superconducting flux qubits. The phase of a polariton fluid must change by an integer number of $2π$, when going around the ring. If one introduces a $π$-phase delay line in the ring, the fluid is obliged to propagate a clockwise or anticlockwise circular current to reduce the total phase gained over one round-trip to zero or to build it up to $2π$. We show that such a $π$-delay line can be provided by a dark soliton pinned to a potential well created by a C-shape non-resonant pump-spot. The resulting split-ring polariton condensates exhibit pronounced coherent oscillations passing periodically through clockwise and anticlockwise current states. These oscillations may persist far beyond the coherence time of polariton condensates. The qubits based on split-ring polariton condensates are expected to possess very high figures of merit that makes them a valuable alternative to superconducting qubits. The use of the dipole-polarized polaritons allows to control coherently the state of the qubit with the external electric field. This is shown to be one of the tools for realization of single-qubit logic operations. We propose the design of an $i$SWAP gate based on a pair of coupled polariton qubits. To demonstrate the capacity of the polariton platform for quantum computations, we propose a protocol for the realization of the Deutsch's algorithm with polariton qubit networks.

Magnetic control of polariton spin transport

We show the full control of the polarization dynamics of a propagating exciton-polariton condensate in a planar microcavity by using a magnetic field applied in the Voigt geometry. The change of the spin-beat frequency, the suppression of the optical spin Hall effect and the rotation of the polarization pattern by the magnetic field are theoretically reproduced by accounting for the magneto-induced mixing of exciton-polariton and dark, spin forbidden, exciton states.

Exciton-polaritons in 2D dichalcogenide layers placed in a planar microcavity: tuneable interaction between two Bose-Einstein condensates

Exciton-polariton modes arising from interaction between bound excitons in monolayer thin semiconductor sheets and photons in a Fabry-Perot microcavity are considered theoretically. We calculate the dispersion curves, mode lifetimes, Rabi splitting, and Hopfield coefficients of these structures for two nearly 2D semiconductor materials, MoS2 and WS2, and suggest that they are interesting for studying the rich physics associated with the Bose-Einstein condensation of exciton-polaritons. The large exciton binding energy and dipole allowed exciton transitions, in addition to the relatively easily controllable distance between the semiconductor sheets are the advantages of this system in comparison with traditional GaAs or CdTe based semiconductor microcavities. In particular, in order to mimic the rich physical properties of the quantum degenerate mixture of two bosonic species of dilute atomic gases with tunable inter-species interaction , we put forward a structure containing two semiconductor sheets separated by some atomic-scale distance (l) using a nearly 2D dielectric (e.g. h-BN), which offers the possibility of tuning the interaction between two exciton-polariton Bose-Enstein condensates. We show that the dynamics of this novel structure are ruled by two coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations with the coupling parameter proportional to 1/l.

Ghost Branch Photoluminescence From a Polariton Fluid Under Nonresonant Excitation

An expanding polariton condensate is investigated under pulsed nonresonant excitation with a small laser pump spot. Far above the condensation threshold we observe a pronounced increase in the dispersion curvature with a subsequent linearization of the spectrum and strong luminescence from a ghost branch orthogonally polarized with respect to the linearly polarized condensate emission. The presence of the ghost branch has been confirmed in time-resolved measurements. The dissipative and nonequilibrium effects in the photoluminescence of polariton condensates and their excitations are discussed.

Hyperbolic Metamaterials with Bragg Polaritons

We propose a novel mechanism for designing quantum hyperbolic metamaterials with use of semi-conductor Bragg mirrors containing periodically arrangedquantum wells. The hyperbolic dispersion of exciton-polariton modes is realized near the top of the first allowed photonic miniband in such structure which leads to formation of exciton-polariton X-waves. Exciton-light coupling provides a resonant non-linearity which leads to non-trivial topologic solutions. We predict formation of low amplitude spatially localized oscillatory structures: oscillons described by kink shaped solutions of the effective Ginzburg-Landau-Higgs equation. The oscillons have direct analogies in the gravita-tional theory. We discuss implementation of exciton-polariton Higgs fields for the Schrodinger cat state generation.

Second-order correlations in an exciton-polariton Rabi oscillator

We develop the theoretical formalism to calculate second-order correlations in dissipative exciton-polariton system and we propose intensity-intensity correlation experiments to reveal the physics of exciton-light coupling in semiconductor microcavities in the Rabi oscillation regime. We predict a counter intuitive behaviour of the correlator between upper and lower polariton branches: due to the decoherence caused by stochastic exciton-photon conversions this correlator is expected to decrease below 1, while the individual second-order coherence of upper and lower polaritons exhibits non-monotonous bunching.

Prediction of thermomagnetic and thermoelectric properties for novel materials and systems

We express the link between conductivity and coefficients of Seebeck, Nernst-Ettingshausen, Peltier, and Thompson and Reghi-Leduc via the temperature derivative of the chemical potential of a system. These general expressions are applied to three-, two- and one-dimensional systems of charge carriers having a parabolic or Dirac spectrum. The method allows for predicting thermoelectric and thermomagnetic properties of novel materials and structures.

THz lasing in a polariton system: Quantum theory

We study the laser regime of terahertz (THz) emission from a semiconductor microcavity in the strong coupling regime, where optical transitions between upper and lower exciton-polariton modes are allowed due to the mixing of the upper mode with one of the dark exciton states. Using a system of master-Boltzmann equations describing both polariton modes and the THz mode, we calculate the first and second order coherences and the spectral shape of THz emission. This analysis shows that THz lasing in microcavities is possible provided that the system is embedded in a good THz cavity, that the optical (polariton) lasing condition is fulfilled and if the depletion of the upper polariton mode due to acoustic phonon assisted relaxation processes is reduced. This latter condition is likely to be realised in pillar microcavities, which seem to be the most suitable candidates for realisation of a THz laser.

Exciton-polariton mediated superconductivity

We revisit the exciton mechanism of superconductivity in the framework of microcavity physics, replacing virtual excitons as a binding agent of Cooper pairs by excitations of an exciton-polariton Bose-Einstein condensate. We consider a model microcavity where a quantum well with a two dimensional electron gas is sandwiched between two undoped quantum wells, where a polariton condensate is formed. We show that the critical temperature for superconductivity dramatically increases with the condensate population, opening a new route towards high temperature superconductivity.
