Sharp Hardy inequalities involving distance functions from submanifolds of Riemannian manifolds

We establish various Hardy inequalities involving the distance function from submanifolds of Riemannian manifolds, where the natural weights are expressed in terms of bounds of the mean curvature of the submanifold and sectional/Ricci curvature of the ambient Riemannian manifold. Our approach is based on subtle Heintze-Karcher-type Laplace comparisons of the distance function and on a D'Ambrosio-Dipierro-type weak divergence formula for suitable vector fields, providing Barbatis-Filippas-Tertikas-type Hardy inequalities in the curved setting. Under very mild assumptions, we also establish the sharpness and non-existence of extremal functions within the Hardy inequalities and - depending on the geometry of the ambient manifold - their extensibility to various function spaces. Several examples are provided by showing the applicability of our approach; in particular, well-known Hardy inequalities appear as limit cases of our new inequalities.

Lord Rayleigh's Conjecture for Vibrating Clamped Plates in Positively Curved Spaces

We affirmatively solve the analogue of Lord Rayleigh's conjecture on Riemannian manifolds with positive Ricci curvature for any clamped plates in 2 and 3 dimensions, and for sufficiently large clamped plates in dimensions beyond 3. These results complement those from the flat (M. Ashbaugh & R. Benguria, 1995, and N. Nadirashvili, 1995) and negatively curved (A. Kristály, 2020) cases that are valid only in 2 and 3 dimensions, and at the same time also provide the first positive answer to Lord Rayleigh's conjecture in higher dimensions. The proofs rely on an Ashbaugh-Benguria-Nadirashvili-Talenti nodal-decomposition argument, on the Lévy-Gromov isoperimetric inequality, on fine properties of Gaussian hypergeometric functions and on sharp spectral gap estimates of fundamental tones for both small and large clamped spherical caps. Our results show that positive curvature enhances genuine differences between low- and high-dimensional settings, a tacitly accepted paradigm in the theory of vibrating clamped plates. In the limit case - when the Ricci curvature is non-negative - we establish a Lord Rayleigh-type isoperimetric inequality that involves the asymptotic volume ratio of the non-compact complete Riemannian manifold; moreover, the inequality is strongly rigid in 2 and 3 dimensions, i.e., if equality holds for a given clamped plate then the manifold is isometric to the Euclidean space.

Sharp isoperimetric and Sobolev inequalities in spaces with nonnegative Ricci curvature

By using optimal mass transport theory we prove a sharp isoperimetric inequality in ${\sf CD} (0,N)$ metric measure spaces assuming an asymptotic volume growth at infinity. Our result extends recently proven isoperimetric inequalities for normed spaces and Riemannian manifolds to a nonsmooth framework. In the case of $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature, we outline an alternative proof of the rigidity result of S. Brendle (2021). As applications of the isoperimetric inequality, we establish Sobolev and Rayleigh-Faber-Krahn inequalities with explicit sharp constants in Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature; here we use appropriate symmetrization techniques and optimal volume non-collapsing properties. The equality cases in the latter inequalities are also characterized by stating that sufficiently smooth, nonzero extremal functions exist if and only if the Riemannian manifold is isometric to the Euclidean space.

Differential inclusions involving oscillatory terms

Motivated by mechanical problems where external forces are non-smooth, we consider the differential inclusion problem \[ \begin{cases} -Δu(x)\in \partial F(u(x))+λ\partial G(u(x))\ \mbox{in}\ Ω\newline u\geq 0\ \mbox{in}\ Ω\newline u= 0\ \mbox{on}\ \partialΩ, \end{cases} \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ {({\mathcal D}_λ)} \] where $Ω\subset {\mathbb R}^n$ is a bounded open domain, and $\partial F$ and $\partial G$ stand for the generalized gradients of the locally Lipschitz functions $F$ and $G$. In this paper we provide a quite complete picture on the number of solutions of $({\mathcal D}_λ)$ whenever $\partial F$ oscillates near the origin/infinity and $\partial G$ is a generic perturbation of order $p>0$ at the origin/infinity, respectively. Our results extend in several aspects those of Kristály and Moroşanu [J. Math. Pures Appl., 2010].

Fundamental tones of clamped plates in nonpositively curved spaces

We study Lord Rayleigh's problem for clamped plates on an arbitrary $n$-dimensional $(n\geq 2)$ Cartan-Hadamard manifold $(M,g)$ with sectional curvature $\textbf{K}\leq -κ^2$ for some $κ\geq 0.$ We first prove a McKean-type spectral gap estimate, i.e. the fundamental tone of any domain in $(M,g)$ is universally bounded from below by $\frac{(n-1)^4}{16}κ^4$ whenever the $κ$-Cartan-Hadamard conjecture holds on $(M,g)$, e.g. in 2- and 3-dimensions due to Bol (1941) and Kleiner (1992), respectively. In 2- and 3-dimensions we prove sharp isoperimetric inequalities for sufficiently small clamped plates, i.e. the fundamental tone of any domain in $(M,g)$ of volume $v>0$ is not less than the corresponding fundamental tone of a geodesic ball of the same volume $v$ in the space of constant curvature $-κ^2$ provided that $v\leq c_n/κ^n$ with $c_2\approx 21.031$ and $c_3\approx 1.721$, respectively. In particular, Rayleigh's problem in Euclidean spaces resolved by Nadirashvili (1992) and Ashbaugh and Benguria (1995) appears as a limiting case in our setting (i.e. $\textbf{K}\equivκ=0$). The sharpness of our results requires the validity of the $κ$-Cartan-Hadamard conjecture (i.e. sharp isoperimetric inequality on $(M,g)$) and peculiar properties of the Gaussian hypergeometric function, both valid only in dimensions 2 and 3; nevertheless, some nonoptimal estimates of the fundamental tone of arbitrary clamped plates are also provided in high-dimensions. As an application, by using the sharp isoperimetric inequality for small clamped hyperbolic discs, we give necessarily and sufficient conditions for the existence of a nontrivial solution to an elliptic PDE involving the biharmonic Laplace-Beltrami operator.

Sharp uncertainty principles on general Finsler manifolds

The paper is devoted to sharp uncertainty principles (Heisenberg-Pauli-Weyl, Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg and Hardy inequalities) on forward complete Finsler manifolds endowed with an arbitrary measure. Under mild assumptions, the existence of extremals corresponding to the sharp constants in the Heisenberg-Pauli-Weyl and Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequalities fully characterizes the nature of the Finsler manifold in terms of three non-Riemannian quantities, namely, its reversibility and the vanishing of the flag curvature and $S$-curvature induced by the measure, respectively. It turns out in particular that the Busemann-Hausdorff measure is the optimal one in the study of sharp uncertainty principles on Finsler manifolds. The optimality of our results are supported by Randers-type Finslerian examples originating from the Zermelo navigation problem.

Sobolev inequalities with jointly concave weights on convex cones

Using optimal mass transport arguments, we prove weighted Sobolev inequalities of the form \[\left(\int_E |u(x)|^q\,ω(x) \,dx\right)^{1/q}\leq K_0\,\left(\int_E |\nabla u(x)|^p\,σ(x)\,dx\right)^{1/p},\ \ u\in C_0^\infty(\mathbb R^n),\ \ \ \ \ \ {\rm (WSI)}\] where $p\geq 1$ and $q>0$ is the corresponding Sobolev critical exponent. Here $E\subseteq \mathbb R^n$ is an open convex cone, and $ω,σ:E\to (0,\infty)$ are two homogeneous weights verifying a general concavity-type structural condition. The constant $K_0= K_0(n, p, q, ω, σ) >0$ is given by an explicit formula. Under mild regularity assumptions on the weights, we also prove that $K_0$ is optimal in (WSI) if and only if $ω$ and $σ$ are equal up to a multiplicative factor. Several previously known results, including the cases for monomials and radial weights, are covered by our statement. Further examples and applications to PDEs are also provided.

New features of the first eigenvalue on negatively curved spaces

The paper is devoted to the study of fine properties of the first eigenvalue on negatively curved spaces. First, depending on the parity of the space dimension, we provide asymptotically sharp harmonic-type expansions of the first eigenvalue for large geodesic balls in the model $n$-dimensional hyperbolic space, complementing the results of Borisov and Freitas (\textit{Comm. Anal. Geom.} 25: 507--544, 2017). We then give a synthetic proof of Cheng's sharp eigenvalue comparison theorem in metric measure spaces satisfying a 'negatively curved' Bishop-Gromov-type volume monotonicity hypothesis. As a byproduct, we provide an example of simply connected, non-compact Finsler manifold with constant negative flag curvature whose first eigenvalue is zero; this result is in a sharp contrast with its celebrated Riemannian counterpart due to McKean (\textit{J. Differential Geom.} 4: 359--366, 1970). Our proofs are based on specific properties of the Gaussian hypergeometric function combined with intrinsic aspects of the negatively curved smooth/non-smooth spaces.

Nodal solutions for the fractional Yamabe problem on Heisenberg groups

We prove that the fractional Yamabe equation $\mathcal L_γu=|u|^\frac{4γ}{Q-2γ}u$ on the Heisenberg group $\mathbb H^n$ has $[\frac{n+1}{2}]$ sequences of nodal (sign-changing) weak solutions whose elements have mutually different nodal properties, where $\mathcal L_γ$ denotes the CR fractional sub-Laplacian operator on $\mathbb H^n$, $Q=2n+2$ is the homogeneous dimension of $\mathbb H^n$, and $γ\in \bigcup_{k=1}^n[k,\frac{kQ}{Q-1})$. Our argument is variational, based on a Ding-type conformal pulling-back transformation of the original problem into a problem on the CR sphere $S^{2n+1}$ combined with a suitable Hebey-Vaugon-type compactness result and group-theoretical constructions for special subgroups of the unitary group ${\bf U}(n+1).$

Metric measure spaces supporting Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities: volume non-collapsing and rigidities

Let $({M},\textsf{d},\textsf{m})$ be a metric measure space which satisfies the Lott-Sturm-Villani curvature-dimension condition $\textsf{CD}(K,n)$ for some $K\geq 0$ and $n\geq 2$, and a lower $n-$density assumption at some point of $M$. We prove that if $({M},\textsf{d},\textsf{m})$ supports the Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality or any of its limit cases ($L^p-$logarithmic Sobolev inequality or Faber-Krahn-type inequality), then a global non-collapsing $n-$dimensional volume growth holds, i.e., there exists a universal constant $C_0>0$ such that $\textsf{m}( B_x(ρ))\geq C_0 ρ^n$ for all $x\in {M}$ and $ρ\geq 0,$ where $B_x(ρ)=\{y\in M:{\sf d}(x,y)<ρ\}$. Due to the quantitative character of the volume growth estimate, we establish several rigidity results on Riemannian manifolds with non-negative Ricci curvature supporting Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities by exploring a quantitative Perelman-type homotopy construction developed by Munn (J. Geom. Anal., 2010). Further rigidity results are also presented on some reversible Finsler manifolds.

Metric projections versus non-positive curvature

In this paper two metric properties on geodesic length spaces are introduced by means of the metric projection, studying their validity on Alexandrov and Busemann NPC spaces. In particular, we prove that both properties characterize the non-positivity of the sectional curvature on Riemannian manifolds. Further results are also established on reversible/non-reversible Finsler-Minkowski spaces.

Multiple solutions for a Neumann system involving subquadratic nonlinearities

In this paper we consider the model semilinear Neumann system $$\left\{ \begin{array}{lll} -Δu+a(x)u=λc(x) F_u(u,v)& {\rm in} & Ω,\\ -Δv+b(x)v=λc(x) F_v(u,v)& {\rm in} & Ω,\\ \frac{\partial u}{\partial ν}=\frac{\partial v}{\partial ν}=0 & {\rm on} & \partialΩ, \end{array}\right.$$ where $Ω\subset \mathbb R^N$ is a smooth open bounded domain, $ν$ denotes the outward unit normal to $\partial Ω$, $λ\geq 0$ is a parameter, $a,b,c\in L_+^\infty(Ω)\setminus\{0\},$ and $F\in C^1(\mathbb{R}^2,\mathbb{R})\setminus\{0\}$ is a nonnegative function which is subquadratic at infinity. Two nearby numbers are determined in explicit forms, $\underline λ$ and $\overline λ$ with $ 0<\underlineλ\leq \overline λ$, such that for every $0\leq λ<\underline λ$, system $(N_λ)$ has only the trivial pair of solution, while for every $λ>\overline λ$, system $(N_λ)$ has at least two distinct nonzero pairs of solutions.

Nash-type equilibria on Riemannian manifolds: a variational approach

Motivated by Nash equilibrium problems on 'curved' strategy sets, the concept of Nash-Stampacchia equilibrium points is introduced via variational inequalities on Riemannian manifolds. Characterizations, existence, and stability of Nash-Stampacchia equilibria are studied when the strategy sets are compact/noncompact geodesic convex subsets of Hadamard manifoleds, exploiting two well-known geometrical features of these spaces both involving the metric projection map. These properties actually characterize the {non-positivity} of the sectional curvature of complete and simply connected Riemannian spaces, delimiting the Hadamard manifolds as the optimal geometrical framework of Nash-Stampacchia equilibrium problems. Our analytical approach exploits various elements from set-valued and variational analysis, dynamical systems, and non-smooth calculus on Riemannian manifolds. Examples are presented on the Poincaré upper-plane model and on the open convex cone of symmetric positive definite matrices endowed with the trace-type Killing form.

On the Schrödinger-Maxwell system involving sublinear terms

In this paper we study the coupled Schrödinger-Maxwell system $$\left\{ \begin{array}{lll} -\triangle u+u +ϕu=λα(x) f(u)& {\rm in} & \mathbb R^3,\\ -\triangle ϕ=u^2 & {\rm in} & \mathbb R^3, \end{array}\right. $$ where $α\in L^\infty(\mathbb R^3)\cap L^{6/(5-q)}(\mathbb R^3)$ for some $q\in (0,1)$, and the continuous function $f:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}$ is superlinear at zero and sublinear at infinity, e.g., $f(s) = \min(|s|^r,|s|^p)$ with $0<r<1<p.$ Depending on the range of $λ>0$, non-existence and multiplicity results are obtained.

Quantitative Rellich Inequalities on Finsler-Hadamard Manifolds

In this paper we are dealing with quantitative Rellich inequalities on Finsler-Hadamard manifolds where the remainder terms are expressed by means of the flag curvature. By exploring various arguments from Finsler geometry and PDEs on manifolds we show that more weighty curvature implies more powerful improvements in Rellich inequalities. The sharpness of the involved constants are also studied. Our results complement those of Yang, Su and Kong [Commun. Contemp. Math., 2014].

Schrödinger-Maxwell systems on Hadamard manifolds

In this paper we study nonlinear Schrödinger-Maxwell systems on $n-$dimensional Hadamard manifolds, $3\leq n\leq 5.$ The main difficulty resides in the lack of compactness of such manifolds which is recovered by exploring suitable isometric actions. By combining variational arguments, some existence, uniqueness and multiplicity of isometry-invariant weak solutions are established for the Schrödinger-Maxwell system depending on the behavior of the nonlinear term.

Sharp comparison and maximum principles via horizontal normal mapping in the Heisenberg group

In this paper we solve a problem raised by Gutiérrez and Montanari about comparison principles for $H-$convex functions on subdomains of Heisenberg groups. Our approach is based on the notion of the sub-Riemannian horizontal normal mapping and uses degree theory for set-valued maps. The statement of the comparison principle combined with a Harnack inequality is applied to prove the Aleksandrov-type maximum principle, describing the correct boundary behavior of continuous $H-$convex functions vanishing at the boundary of horizontally bounded subdomains of Heisenberg groups. This result answers a question by Garofalo and Tournier. The sharpness of our results are illustrated by examples.

Singular Poisson equations on Finsler-Hadamard manifolds

In the first part of the paper we study the reflexivity of Sobolev spaces on non-compact and not necessarily reversible Finsler manifolds. Then, by using direct methods in the calculus of variations, we establish uniqueness, location and rigidity results for singular Poisson equations involving the Finsler-Laplace operator on Finsler-Hadamard manifolds having finite reversibility constant.

Elliptic problems on the ball endowed with Funk-type metrics

We study Sobolev spaces on the $n-$dimensional unit ball $B^n(1)$ endowed with a parameter-depending Finsler metric $F_a$, $a\in [0,1],$ which interpolates between the Klein metric $(a=0)$ and Funk metric $(a=1)$, respectively. We show that the standard Sobolev space defined on the Finsler manifold $(B^n(1),F_a)$ is a vector space if and only if $a\in [0,1).$ Furthermore, by exploiting variational arguments, we provide non-existence and existence results for sublinear elliptic problems on $(B^n(1),F_a)$ involving the Finsler-Laplace operator whenever $a\in [0,1).$

Sharp Morrey-Sobolev inequalities on complete Riemannian Manifolds

Two Morrey-Sobolev inequalities (with support-bound and $L^1-$bound, respectively) are investigated on complete Riemannian manifolds with their sharp constants in $\mathbb R^n$. We prove the following results in both cases: $\bullet$ If $(M,g)$ is a {\it Cartan-Hadamard manifold} which verifies the $n-$dimensional Cartan-Hadamard conjecture, sharp Morrey-Sobolev inequalities hold on $(M,g)$. Moreover, extremals exist if and only if $(M,g)$ is isometric to the standard Euclidean space $(\mathbb R^n,e)$. $\bullet$ If $(M,g)$ has {\it non-negative Ricci curvature}, $(M,g)$ supports the sharp Morrey-Sobolev inequalities if and only if $(M,g)$ is isometric to $(\mathbb R^n,e)$.

What do `convexities' imply on Hadamard manifolds?

Various results based on some convexity assumptions (involving the exponential map along with affine maps, geodesics and convex hulls) have been recently established on Hadamard manifolds. In this paper we prove that these conditions are mutually equivalent and they hold if and only if the Hadamard manifold is isometric to the Euclidean space. In this way, we show that some results in the literature obtained on Hadamard manifolds are actually nothing but their well known Euclidean counterparts.

A constructive approach to triangular trigonometric patches

We construct a constrained trivariate extension of the univariate normalized B-basis of the vector space of trigonometric polynomials of arbitrary (finite) order n defined on any compact interval [0,α], where αis a fixed (shape) parameter in (0,π). Our triangular extension is a normalized linearly independent constrained trivariate trigonometric function system of dimension 3n(n+1)+1 that spans the same vector space of functions as the constrained trivariate extension of the canonical basis of truncated Fourier series of order n over [0,α]. Although the explicit general basis transformation is yet unknown, the coincidence of these vector spaces is proved by means of an appropriate equivalence relation. As a possible application of our triangular extension, we introduce the notion of (rational) triangular trigonometric patches of order n and of singularity free parametrization that could be used as control point based modeling tools in CAGD.

Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequality on metric measure spaces with applications

We prove that if a metric measure space satisfies the volume doubling condition and the Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequality with the same exponent $n \ge 3$, then it has exactly the $n$-dimensional volume growth. As an application, if an $n$-dimensional Finsler manifold of non-negative $n$-Ricci curvature satisfies the Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequality with the sharp constant, then its flag curvature is identically zero. In the particular case of Berwald spaces, such a space is necessarily isometric to a Minkowski space.
