Asymptotic exponential law for the transition time to equilibrium of the metastable kinetic Ising model with vanishing magnetic field

We consider a Glauber dynamics associated with the Ising model on a large two-dimensional box with with minus boundary conditions and in the limit of a vanishing positive external magnetic field. The volume of this box increases quadratically in the inverse of the magnetic field. We show that at subcritical temperature and for a large class of starting measures, including measures that are supported by configurations with macroscopic plus-spin droplets, the system rapidly relaxes to some metastable equilibrium ---with typical configurations made of microscopic plus-phase droplets in a sea of minus spins--- before making a transition at an asymptotically exponential random time towards equilibrium ---with typical configurations made of microscopic minus-phase droplets in a sea of plus spins inside a large contour that separates this plus phase from the boundary. We get this result by bounding from above the local relaxation times towards metastable and stable equilibria. This makes possible to give a pathwise description of such a transition, to control the asymptotic behaviour of the mixing time in terms of soft capacities and to give estimates of these capacities.

Random spanning forests, Markov matrix spectra and well distributed points

This paper is a variation on the uniform spanning tree theme. We use random spanning forests to solve the following problem: for a Markov process on a finite set of size $n$, find a probability law on the subsets of any given size $m \leq n$ with the property that the mean hitting time of such a random target does not depend on the starting point of the random walk. We then explore the connection between random spanning forests and infinitesimal generator spectrum. In particular we give an almost probabilistic proof of an algebraic result due to Micchelli and Willoughby and used by Fill and Miclo to study the convergence to equilibrium of reversible Markov chains. We finally introduce some related fragmentation and coalescence processes, emphasizing algorithmic aspects, and give an extension of Burton and Pemantle transfer current theorem to the non reversible case.

Sublogarithmic fluctuations for internal DLA

We consider internal diffusion limited aggregation in dimension larger than or equal to two. This is a random cluster growth model, where random walks start at the origin of the d-dimensional lattice, one at a time, and stop moving when reaching a site that is not occupied by previous walks. It is known that the asymptotic shape of the cluster is a sphere. When the dimension is two or more, we have shown in a previous paper that the inner (resp., outer) fluctuations of its radius is at most of order $\log(\mathrm{radius})$ [resp., $\log^2(\mathrm{radius})$]. Using the same approach, we improve the upper bound on the inner fluctuation to $\sqrt{\log(\mathrm{radius})}$ when d is larger than or equal to three. The inner fluctuation is then used to obtain a similar upper bound on the outer fluctuation.

A Dirichlet principle for non reversible Markov chains and some recurrence theorems

We extend the Dirichlet principle to non-reversible Markov processes on countable state spaces. We present two variational formulas for the solution of the Poisson equation or, equivalently, for the capacity between two disjoint sets. As an application we prove a some recurrence theorems. In particular, we show the recurrence of two-dimensional cycle random walks under a second moment condition on the winding numbers.
