Dimension-decaying diffusion processes as the scaling limit of condensing zero-range processes

In this article, we prove that, on the diffusive time scale, condensing zero-range processes converge to a dimension-decaying diffusion process on the simplex \[ Σ= \{(x_1,\dots,x_S) : x_i \ge 0,\; \sum_{i\in S} x_i = 1\}, \] where $S$ is a finite set. This limiting diffusion has the distinctive feature of being absorbed at the boundary of the simplex. More precisely, once the process reaches a face \[ Σ_A = \{(x_1,\dots,x_S) : x_i \ge 0,\; \sum_{i\in A} x_i = 1\}, \qquad A \subset S, \] it remains confined to this set and evolves in the corresponding lower-dimensional simplex according to a new diffusion whose parameters depend on the subset $A$. This mechanism repeats itself, leading to successive reductions of the dimension, until one of the vertices of the simplex is reached in finite time. At that point, the process becomes permanently trapped. The proof relies on a method to extend the domain of the associated martingale problem, which may be of independent interest and useful in other contexts.

On hydrodynamic limits in Sinai-type random environments

We investigate the hydrodynamical behavior of a system of random walks with zero-range interactions moving in a common `Sinai-type' random environment on a one dimensional torus. The hydrodynamic equation found is a quasilinear SPDE with a `rough' random drift term coming from a scaling of the random environment and a homogenization of the particle interaction. Part of the motivation for this work is to understand how the space-time limit of the particle mass relates to that of the known single particle Brox diffusion limit. In this respect, given the hydrodynamic limit shown, we describe formal connections through a two scale limit.

Metastability of non-reversible mean-field Potts model with three spins

We examine a non-reversible, mean-field Potts model with three spins on a set with $N\uparrow\infty$ points. Without an external field, there are three critical temperatures and five different metastable regimes. The analysis can be extended by a perturbative argument to the case of small external fields. We illustrate the case of large external fields with some phenomena which are not present in the absence of external field.

Macroscopic fluctuation theory

Stationary non-equilibrium states describe steady flows through macroscopic systems. Although they represent the simplest generalization of equilibrium states, they exhibit a variety of new phenomena. Within a statistical mechanics approach, these states have been the subject of several theoretical investigations, both analytic and numerical. The macroscopic fluctuation theory, based on a formula for the probability of joint space-time fluctuations of thermodynamic variables and currents, provides a unified macroscopic treatment of such states for driven diffusive systems. We give a detailed review of this theory including its main predictions and most relevant applications.

Entropy of non-equilibrium stationary measures of boundary driven TASEP

We examine the entropy of non-equilibrium stationary states of boundary driven totally asymmetric simple exclusion processes. As a consequence, we obtain that the Gibbs-Shannon entropy of the non equilibrium stationary state converges to the Gibbs-Shannon entropy of the local equilibrium state. Moreover, we prove that its fluctuations are Gaussian, except when the mean displacement of particles produced by the bulk dynamics agrees with the particle flux induced by the density reservoirs in the maximal phase regime.

A Dirichlet principle for non reversible Markov chains and some recurrence theorems

We extend the Dirichlet principle to non-reversible Markov processes on countable state spaces. We present two variational formulas for the solution of the Poisson equation or, equivalently, for the capacity between two disjoint sets. As an application we prove a some recurrence theorems. In particular, we show the recurrence of two-dimensional cycle random walks under a second moment condition on the winding numbers.

Action functional and quasi-potential for the Burgers equation in a bounded interval

Consider the viscous Burgers equation $u_t + f(u)_x = ε\, u_{xx}$ on the interval $[0,1]$ with the inhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions $u(t,0) = ρ_0$, $u(t,1) = ρ_1$. The flux $f$ is the function $f(u)= u(1-u)$, $ε>0$ is the viscosity, and the boundary data satisfy $0<ρ_0<ρ_1<1$. We examine the quasi-potential corresponding to an action functional, arising from non-equilibrium statistical mechanical models, associated to the above equation. We provide a static variational formula for the quasi-potential and characterize the optimal paths for the dynamical problem. In contrast with previous cases, for small enough viscosity, the variational problem defining the quasi potential admits more than one minimizer. This phenomenon is interpreted as a non-equilibrium phase transition and corresponds to points where the super-differential of the quasi-potential is not a singleton.

Nonequilibrium fluctuations for a tagged particle in one-dimensional sublinear rate zero-range processes

Nonequilibrium fluctuations of a tagged, or distinguished particle in a class of one dimensional mean-zero zero-range systems with sublinear, increasing rates are derived. In Jara-Landim-Sethuraman (2009), processes with at least linear rates are considered. A different approach to establish a main "local replacement" limit is required for sublinear rate systems, given that their mixing properties are much different. The method discussed also allows to capture the fluctuations of a "second-class" particle in unit rate, symmetric zero-range models.

Convergence to the maximal invariant measure for a zero-range process with random rates

We consider a one-dimensional totally asymmetric nearest-neighbor zero-range process with site-dependent jump-rates - an environment. For each environment p we prove that the set of all invariant measures is the convex hull of a set of product measures with geometric marginals. As a consequence we show that for environments p satisfying certain asymptotic property, there are no invariant measures concentrating on configurations with critical density bigger than $ρ^*(p)$, a critical value. If $ρ^*(p)$ is finite we say that there is phase-transition on the density. In this case we prove that if the initial configuration has asymptotic density strictly above $ρ^*(p)$, then the process converges to the maximal invariant measure.
