Speeding up adiabatic quantum state transfer by using dressed states

We develop new pulse schemes to significantly speed up adiabatic state transfer protocols. Our general strategy involves adding corrections to an initial control Hamiltonian which harness non-adiabatic transitions. These corrections define a set of dressed states that the system follows exactly during the state transfer. We apply this approach to STIRAP protocols and show that a suitable choice of dressed states allows one to design fast protocols that do not require additional couplings, while simultaneously minimizing the occupancy of the "intermediate" level.

Ancillary qubit spectroscopy of cavity (circuit) QED vacua

We investigate theoretically how the spectroscopy of an ancillary qubit can probe cavity (circuit) QED ground states containing photons. We consider three classes of systems (Dicke, Tavis-Cummings and Hopfield-like models), where non-trivial vacua are the result of ultrastrong coupling between N two-level systems and a single-mode bosonic field. An ancillary qubit detuned with respect to the boson frequency is shown to reveal distinct spectral signatures depending on the type of vacua. In particular, the Lamb shift of the ancilla is sensitive to both ground state photon population and correlations. Back-action of the ancilla on the cavity ground state is investigated, taking into account the dissipation via a consistent master equation for the ultrastrong coupling regime. The conditions for high-fidelity measurements are determined.

Controlling discrete and continuous symmetries in 'superradiant' phase transitions

We explore theoretically the physics of a collection of two-level systems coupled to a single-mode bosonic field in the non-standard configuration where each (artificial) atom is coupled to both field quadratures of the boson mode. We determine the rich phase diagram showing 'superradiant' phases with different symmetries. We demonstrate that it is possible to pass from a discrete, parity-like $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry to a continuous U(1) symmetry even in the ultrastrong coupling regime where the rotating wave approximation for the interaction between field and two-level systems is no longer applicable. By applying this general paradigm, we propose a scheme for the experimental implementation of such continuous U(1) symmetry in circuit QED systems, with the appearance of photonic Goldstone and amplitude modes above a critical point.

Superradiant phase transitions with three-level systems

We determine the phase diagram of $N$ identical three-level systems interacting with a single photonic mode in the thermodynamical limit ($N \to \infty$) by accounting for the so-called diamagnetic term and the inequalities imposed by the Thomas-Reich-Kuhn (TRK) oscillator strength sum rule. The key role of transitions between excited levels and the occurrence of first-order phase transitions is discussed. We show that, in contrast to two-level systems, in the three-level case the TRK inequalities do not always prevent a superradiant phase transition in presence of a diamagnetic term.

Double symmetry breaking and 2D quantum phase diagram in spin-boson systems

The quantum ground state properties of two independent chains of spins (two-levels systems) interacting with the same bosonic field are theoretically investigated. Each chain is coupled to a different quadrature of the field, leading to two independent symmetry breakings for increasing values of the two spin-boson interaction constants $Ω_C$ and $Ω_I$. A phase diagram is provided in the plane ($Ω_C$,$Ω_I$) with 4 different phases that can be characterized by the complex bosonic coherence of the ground states and can be manipulated via non-abelian Berry effects. In particular, when $Ω_C$ and $Ω_I$ are both larger than two critical values, the fundamental subspace has a four-fold degeneracy. Possible implementations in superconducting or atomic systems are discussed.
