Creating and controlling Dirac fermions, Weyl fermions, and nodal lines in the magnetic antiperovskite Eu$_3$PbO

The band topology of magnetic semimetals is of interest both from the fundamental science point of view and with respect to potential spintronics and memory applications. Unfortunately, only a handful of suitable topological semimetals with magnetic order have been discovered so far. One such family that hosts these characteristics is the antiperovskites, A$_3$BO, a family of 3D Dirac semimetals. The A=Eu$^{2+}$ compounds magnetically order with multiple phases as a function of applied magnetic field. Here, by combining band structure calculations with neutron diffraction and magnetic measurements, we establish the antiperovskite Eu$_3$PbO as a new topological magnetic semimetal. This topological material exhibits a multitude of different topological phases with ordered Eu moments which can be easily controlled by an external magnetic field. The topological phase diagram of Eu$_3$PbO includes an antiferromagnetic Dirac phase, as well as ferro- and ferrimagnetic phases with both Weyl points and nodal lines. For each of these phases, we determine the bulk band dispersions, the surface states, and the topological invariants by means of $\textit{ab-initio}$ and tight-binding calculations. Our discovery of these topological phases introduces Eu$_3$PbO as a new platform to study and manipulate the interplay of band topology, magnetism, and transport.

High sensitivity heat capacity measurements on Sr2RuO4 under uniaxial pressure

A key question regarding the unconventional superconductivity of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ remains whether the order parameter is single- or two-component. Under a hypothesis of two-component superconductivity, uniaxial pressure is expected to lift their degeneracy, resulting in a split transition. The most direct and fundamental probe of a split transition is heat capacity. Here, we report measurement of heat capacity of samples subject to large and highly homogeneous uniaxial pressure. We place an upper limit on the heat-capacity signature of any second transition of a few per cent of that of the primary superconducting transition. The normalized jump in heat capacity, $ΔC/C$, grows smoothly as a function of uniaxial pressure, favouring order parameters which are allowed to maximize in the same part of the Brillouin zone as the well-studied van Hove singularity. Thanks to the high precision of our measurements, these findings place stringent constraints on theories of the superconductivity of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$.

Site-selective $d^{10}$/$d^0$ substitution in a $S = 1/2$ spin ladder Ba$_2$CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_x$O$_6$ ($0 \leq x \leq 0.3$)

Remarkably, doping isovalent $d^{10}$ and $d^0$ cations onto the $B$'' site in $A_2B$'$B$''O$_6$ double perovskites has the power to direct the magnetic interactions between magnetic $B$' cations. This is due to changes in orbital hybridization, which favors different superexchange pathways, and leads to the formation of alternative magnetic structures depending on whether $B$'' is $d^{10}$ or $d^0$. Furthermore, the competition generated by introducing mixtures of $d^{10}$ and $d^0$ cations can drive the material into the realms of exotic quantum magnetism. Here, a W$^{6+}$ $d^0$ dopant was introduced to a $d^{10}$ hexagonal perovskite Ba$_2$CuTeO$_6$, which possesses a spin ladder geometry of Cu$^{2+}$ cations, creating a Ba$_2$CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_x$O$_6$ solid solution ($x$ = 0 - 0.3). Neutron and synchrotron X-ray diffraction show that W$^{6+}$ is almost exclusively substituted for Te$^{6+}$ on the corner-sharing site within the spin ladder, in preference to the face-sharing site between ladders. This means the intra-ladder interactions are selectively tuned by the $d^0$ cations. Bulk magnetic measurements suggest this suppresses magnetic ordering in a similar manner to that observed for the spin-liquid like material Sr$_2$CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_x$O$_6$. This further demonstrates the utility of $d^{10}$ and $d^0$ dopants as a tool for tuning magnetic ground states in a wide range of perovskites and perovskite-derived structures.

Quantum Oscillations and Magnetic Reconstruction in the Delafossite PdCrO$_2$

We report quantum oscillation data on the metallic triangular antiferromagnet PdCrO$_2$. We find that, to very high accuracy, the observed frequencies of PdCrO$_2$ can be reproduced by reconstruction of the (nonmagnetic) PdCoO$_2$ Fermi surface into a reduced zone. The reduced zone corresponds to a magnetic cell containing six chromium sites, giving a $\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3}$ in-plane reconstruction, and $\times 2$ interplane reconstruction. The interplane ordering represents a reduction in lattice symmetry, possibly to monoclinic, and an associated lattice distortion is expected. In addition, we report a magnetic transition under an applied in-plane field that is probably equivalent to the spin-flop transition reported for CuCrO$_2$, and present data on its field-angle dependence. We also report measurements of the resistivity of PdCrO$_2$ up to 500 K.

Quantum oscillations and high carrier mobility in the delafossite PdCoO$_2$

We present de Haas-van Alphen and resistivity data on single crystals of the delafossite PdCoO2. At 295 K we measure an in-plane resistivity of 2.6 μΩ-cm, making PdCoO2 the most conductive oxide known. The low-temperature in-plane resistivity has an activated rather than the usual T^5 temperature dependence, suggesting a gapping of effective scattering that is consistent with phonon drag. Below 10 K, the transport mean free path is 20 \mum, approximately 10^5 lattice spacings and an astoundingly high value for flux-grown crystals. We discuss the origin of these properties in light of our data.

The High Temperature Phase Transitions of Hexagonal YMnO3

We report a detailed high-resolution powder neutron diffraction investigation of the structural behaviour of the multiferroic hexagonal polymorph of YMnO3 between room temperature and 1403 K. The study was aimed at resolving previous uncertainties regarding the nature of the paraelectric- ferroelectric transition and the possibilities of any secondary structural transitions. We observe a clear transition at 1258 +/- 14 K corresponding to a unit cell tripling and a change in space group from centrosymmetric P6_3/mmc to polar P6_3cm. Despite the fact that this symmetry permits ferroelectricity, our experimental data for this transition analysed in terms of symmetry-adapted displacement modes clearly supports previous theoretical analysis that the transition is driven primarily by the antiferrodistortive K3 mode. We therefore verify previous suggestions that YMnO3 is an improper ferrielectric. Furthermore, our data confirm that the previously suggested intermediate phase with space group P6_3/mcm does not occur. However, we do find evidence for an isosymmetric phase transition (i.e. P6_3cm to P6_3cm) at ~920 K which involves a sharp decrease in polarization. This secondary transition correlates well with several previous reports of anomalies in physical properties in this temperature region and may be related to Y-O hybridization.
