Eigenvalue asymptotics for the one-particle kinetic energy density operator

The kinetic energy of a multi-particle system is described by the one-particle kinetic energy density matrix $τ(x, y)$. Alongside the one-particle density matrix $γ(x, y)$, it is one of the key objects in the quantum-mechanical approximation schemes. We prove the asymptotic formula $λ_k \sim (Bk)^{-2}$, $B \ge 0$, as $k\to\infty$, for the eigenvalues $λ_k$ of the self-adjoint operator $\boldsymbol{\sf T}\ge 0$ with kernel $τ(x, y)$.

On spectral analysis of self-adjoint Toeplitz operators

The paper pursues three objectives. Firstly, we provide an expanded version of spectral analysis of self-adjoint Toeplitz operators, initially built by M. Rosenblum in the 1960's. We offer some improvements to Rosenblum's approach: for instance, our proof of the absolute continuity, relying on a weak version of the limiting absorption principle, is more direct. Secondly, we study in detail Toeplitz operators with finite spectral multiplicity. In particular, we introduce generalized eigenfunctions and investigate their properties. Thirdly, we develop a more detailed spectral analysis for piecewise continuous symbols. This is necessary for construction of scattering theory for Toeplitz operators with such symbols.

On the Szegő formulas for truncated Wiener-Hopf operators

We consider functions of multi-dimensional versions of truncated Wiener--Hopf operators with smooth symbols, and study the scaling asymptotics of their traces. The obtained results extend the asymptotic formulas obtained by H. Widom in the 1980's to non-smooth functions, and non-smooth truncation domains. The obtained asymptotic formulas are used to analyse the scaling limit of the spatially bipartite entanglement entropy of thermal equilibrium states of non-interacting fermions at positive temperature.

Extreme eigenvalues of an integral operator

We study the family of compact operators $B_α = V A_α V$, $α>0$ in $L^2(\mathbb R^d)$, $d\ge 1$, where $A_α$ is the pseudo-differential operator with symbol $a_α(\boldsymbolξ) = a(α\boldsymbolξ)$, and both functions $a$ and $V$ are real-valued and decay at infinity. We assume that $a$ and $V$ attain their maximal values $A_0>0$, $V_0>0$, only at $\boldsymbolξ= \mathbf 0$ and $\mathbf x = \mathbf 0$. We also assume that a(\boldsymbolξ) = &\ A_0 - Ψ_γ(\boldsymbolξ) + o(|\boldsymbolξ|^γ),\ |\boldsymbolξ|\to 0, V(\mathbf x) = &\ V_0 - Φ_β(\mathbf x) + o(|\mathbf x|^β),\ |\mathbf x|\to 0, with some functions $Ψ_γ(\boldsymbolξ)>0$, $\boldsymbolξ\not =\mathbf 0$ and $Φ_β(\mathbf x) >0$, $\mathbf x\not = \mathbf 0$ that are homogeneous of degree $γ>0$ and $β>0$ respectively. The main result is the following asymptotic formula for the eigenvalues $λ_α^{(n)}$ of the operator $B_α$ (arranged in descending order counting multiplicity) for fixed $n$ and $α\to 0$: λ_α^{(n)} = A_0V_0^2 - μ^{(n)} α^σ + o(α^σ), α\to 0, where $σ^{-1} = γ^{-1}+ β^{-1}$, and $μ^{(n)}$ are the eigenvalues (arranged in ascending order counting multiplicity) of the model operator $T$ with symbol $V_0^2Ψ_γ(\boldsymbolξ) + 2A_0 V_0 Φ_β(\mathbf x)$.

Formulas of Szegő type for the periodic Schrödinger operator

We prove asymptotic formulas of Szegő type for the periodic Schrödinger operator $H=-\frac{d^2}{dx^2}+V$ in dimension one. Admitting fairly general functions $h$ with $h(0)=0$, we study the trace of the operator $h(χ_{(-α,α)}χ_{(-\infty,μ)}(H)χ_{(-α,α)})$ and link its subleading behaviour as $α\to\infty$ to the position of the spectral parameter $μ$ relative to the spectrum of $H$.

Trace formulas for Wiener--Hopf operators with applications to entropies of free fermionic equilibrium states

We consider non-smooth functions of (truncated) Wiener--Hopf type operators on the Hilbert space $L^2(\mathbb R^d)$. Our main results are uniform estimates for trace norms ($d\ge 1$) and quasiclassical asymptotic formulas for traces of the resulting operators ($d=1$). Here, we follow Harold Widom's seminal ideas, who proved such formulas for smooth functions decades ago. The extension to non-smooth functions and the uniformity of the estimates in various (physical) parameters rest on recent advances by one of the authors (AVS). We use our results to obtain the large-scale behaviour of the local entropy and the spatially bipartite entanglement entropy (EE) of thermal equilibrium states of non-interacting fermions in position space $\mathbb R^d$ ($d\ge 1$) at positive temperature, $T>0$. In particular, our definition of the thermal EE leads to estimates that are simultaneously sharp for small $T$ and large scaling parameter $α>0$ provided that the product $Tα$ remains bounded from below. Here $α$ is the reciprocal quasiclassical parameter. For $d=1$ we obtain for the thermal EE an asymptotic formula which is consistent with the large-scale behaviour of the ground-state EE (at $T=0$), previously established by the authors for $d\ge 1$.

Functions of self-adjoint operators in ideals of compact operators

For self-adjoint operators $A, B$, a bounded operator $J$, and a function $f:\mathbb R\to\mathbb C$ we obtain bounds in quasi-normed ideals of compact operators for the difference $f(A)J-Jf(B)$ in terms of the operator $AJ-JB$. The focus is on functions $f$ that are smooth everywhere except for finitely many points. A typical example is the function $f(t) = |t|^γ$ with $γ\in (0, 1)$. The obtained results are applied to derive a two-term quasi-classical asymptotic formula for the trace $tr f(S)$ with $S$ being a Wiener-Hopf operator with a discontinuous symbol.

Scaling of Rényi entanglement entropies of the free Fermi-gas ground state: a rigorous proof

In a remarkable paper [Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 100503 (2006)], Dimitri Gioev and Israel Klich conjectured an explicit formula for the leading asymptotic growth of the spatially bi-partite von-Neumann entanglement entropy of non-interacting fermions in multi-dimensional Euclidean space at zero temperature. Based on recent progress by one of us (A.V.S.) in semi-classical functional calculus for pseudo-differential operators with discontinuous symbols, we provide here a complete proof of that formula and of its generalization to Rényi entropies of all orders $α>0$. The special case $α=1/2$ is also known under the name logarithmic negativity and often considered to be a particularly useful quantification of entanglement. These formulas, exhibiting a "logarithmically enhanced area law", have been used already in many publications.

Spatially localized solutions of the Hammerstein equation with sigmoid type of nonlinearity

We study the existence of fixed points to a parameterized Hammertstain operator $\cH_β,$ $β\in (0,\infty],$ with sigmoid type of nonlinearity. The parameter $β<\infty$ indicates the steepness of the slope of a nonlinear smooth sigmoid function and the limit case $β=\infty$ corresponds to a discontinuous unit step function. We prove that spatially localized solutions to the fixed point problem for large $β$ exist and can be approximated by the fixed points of $\cH_\infty.$ These results are of a high importance in biological applications where one often approximates the smooth sigmoid by discontinuous unit step function. Moreover, in order to achieve even better approximation than a solution of the limit problem, we employ the iterative method that has several advantages compared to other existing methods. For example, this method can be used to construct non-isolated homoclinic orbit of a Hamiltionian system of equations. We illustrate the results and advantages of the numerical method for stationary versions of the FitzHugh-Nagumo reaction-diffusion equation and a neural field model.

Quasi-classical asymptotics for pseudo-differential operators with discontinuous symbols: Widom's Conjecture

Relying on the known two-term quasiclassical asymptotic formula for the trace of the function $f(A)$ of a Wiener-Hopf type operator $A$ in dimension one, in 1982 H. Widom conjectured a multi-dimensional generalization of that formula for a pseudo-differential operator $A$ with a symbol $a(\bx, \bxi)$ having jump discontinuities in both variables. In 1990 he proved the conjecture for the special case when the jump in any of the two variables occurs on a hyperplane. The present paper gives a proof of Widom's Conjecture under the assumption that the symbol has jumps in both variables on arbitrary smooth bounded surfaces.

On the near periodicity of eigenvalues of Toeplitz matrices

Let $A$ be an infinite Toeplitz matrix with a real symbol $f$ defined on $[-π, π]$. It is well known that the sequence of spectra of finite truncations $A_N$ of $A$ converges to the convex hull of the range of $f$. Recently, Levitin and Shargorodsky, on the basis of some numerical experiments, conjectured, for symbols $f$ with two discontinuities located at rational multiples of $π$, that the eigenvalues of $A_N$ located in the gap of $f$ asymptotically exhibit periodicity in $N$, and suggested a formula for the period as a function of the position of discontinuities. In this paper, we quantify and prove the analog of this conjecture for the matrix $A^2$ in a particular case when $f$ is a piecewise constant function taking values $-1$ and $1$.
