Asymptotic analysis of operator families and applications to resonant media

We give an overview of operator-theoretic tools that have recently proved useful in the analysis of boundary-value and transmission problems for second-order partial differential equations, with a view to addressing, in particular, the asymptotic behaviour of resolvents of physically motivated parameter-dependent operator families. We demonstrate the links of this rich area, on the one hand, to functional frameworks developed by S. N. Naboko and his students, and on the other hand, to concrete applications of current interest in the physics and engineering communities.

Operator-norm resolvent asymptotic analysis of continuous media with high-contrast inclusions

Using a generalisation of the classical notion of Dirichlet-to-Neumann map and the related formulae for the resolvents of boundary-value problems, we analyse the asymptotic behaviour of solutions to a "transmission problem" for a high-contrast inclusion in a continuous medium, for which we prove the operator-norm resolvent convergence to a limit problem of "electrostatic" type for functions that are constant on the inclusion. In particular, our results imply the convergence of the spectra of high-contrast problems to the spectrum of the limit operator, with order-sharp convergence estimates.

Functional model for boundary-value problems

We develop a functional model for operators arising in the study of boundary-value problems of materials science and mathematical physics. We then provide explicit formulae for the resolvents of the associated extensions of symmetric operators in terms of the associated generalised Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps, which can be utilised in the analysis of the properties of parameter-dependent problems as well as in the study of their spectra.

Scattering theory for a class of non-selfadjoint extensions of symmetric operators

This work deals with the functional model for a class of extensions of symmetric operators and its applications to the theory of wave scattering. In terms of Boris Pavlov's spectral form of this model, we find explicit formulae for the action of the unitary group of exponentials corresponding to almost solvable extensions of a given closed symmetric operator with equal deficiency indices. On the basis of these formulae, we are able to construct wave operators and derive a new representation for the scattering matrix for pairs of such extensions in both self-adjoint and non-self-adjoint situations.

Norm-resolvent convergence of one-dimensional high-contrast periodic problems to a Kronig-Penney dipole-type model

We prove operator-norm resolvent convergence estimates for one-dimensional periodic differential operators with rapidly oscillating coefficients in the non-uniformly elliptic high-contrast setting, which has been out of reach of the existing homogenisation techniques. Our asymptotic analysis is based on a special representation of the resolvent of the operator in terms of the $M$-matrix of an associated boundary triple ("Krein resolvent formula''). The resulting asymptotic behaviour is shown to be described, up to a unitary equivalent transformation, by a non-standard version of the Kronig-Penney model on $\mathbb R$.

Isospectrality for graph Laplacians under the change of coupling at graph vertices

Laplacian operators on finite compact metric graphs are considered under the assumption that matching conditions at graph vertices are of $δ$ and $δ'$ types. An infinite series of trace formulae is obtained which link together two different quantum graphs under the assumption that their spectra coincide. The general case of graph Schrodinger operators is also considered, yielding the first trace formula. Tightness of results obtained under no additional restrictions on edge lengths is demonstrated by an example. Further examples are scrutinized when edge lengths are assumed to be rationally independent. In all but one of these impossibility of isospectral configurations is ascertained.

Isospectrality for graph Laplacians under the change of coupling at graph vertices: necessary and sufficient conditions

Laplace operators on finite compact metric graphs are considered under the assumption that matching conditions at graph vertices are of $δ$ and $δ'$ types. Assuming rational independence of edge lengths, necessary and sufficient conditions of isospectrality of two Laplacians defined on the same graph are derived and scrutinized. It is proved that the spectrum of a graph Laplacian uniquely determines matching conditions for "almost all" graphs.

Trace formulae for graph Laplacians with applications to recovering matching conditions

Graph Laplacians on finite compact metric graphs are considered under the assumption that the matching conditions at the graph vertices are of either $δ$ or $δ'$ type. In either case, an infinite series of trace formulae which link together two different graph Laplacians provided that their spectra coincide is derived. Applications are given to the problem of reconstructing matching conditions for a graph Laplacian based on its spectrum.

Trace formulae for Schrodinger operators on metric graphs with applications to recovering matching conditions

The paper is a continuation of the study started in \cite{Yorzh1}. Schrodinger operators on finite compact metric graphs are considered under the assumption that the matching conditions at the graph vertices are of $δ$ type. Either an infinite series of trace formulae (provided that edge potentials are infinitely smooth) or a finite number of such formulae (in the cases of $L_1$ and $C^M$ edge potentials) are obtained which link together two different quantum graphs under the assumption that their spectra coincide. Applications are given to the problem of recovering matching conditions for a quantum graph based on its spectrum.

On Cayley Identity for Self-Adjoint Operators in Hilbert Spaces

We prove an analogue to the Cayley identity for an arbitrary self-adjoint operator in a Hilbert space. We also provide two new ways to characterize vectors belonging to the singular spectral subspace in terms of the analytic properties of the resolvent of the operator, computed on these vectors. The latter are analogous to those used routinely in the scattering theory for the absolutely continuous subspace.
