Rate-optimal nonparametric estimation for random coefficient regression models

Random coefficient regression models are a popular tool for analyzing unobserved heterogeneity, and have seen renewed interest in the recent econometric literature. In this paper we obtain the optimal pointwise convergence rate for estimating the density in the linear random coefficient model over Hölder smoothness classes, and in particular show how the tail behavior of the design density impacts this rate. In contrast to previous suggestions, the estimator that we propose and that achieves the optimal convergence rate does not require dividing by a nonparametric density estimate. The optimal choice of the tuning parameters in the estimator depends on the tail parameter of the design density and on the smoothness level of the Hölder class, and we also study adaptive estimation with respect to both parameters.

Optimal classification and nonparametric regression for functional data

We establish minimax convergence rates for classification of functional data and for nonparametric regression with functional design variables. The optimal rates are of logarithmic type under smoothness constraints on the functional density and the regression mapping, respectively. These asymptotic properties are attainable by conventional kernel procedures. The bandwidth selector does not require knowledge of the smoothness level of the target mapping. In this work, the functional data are considered as realisations of random variables which take their values in a general Polish metric space. We impose certain metric entropy constraints on this space; but no algebraic properties are required.

Strong Gaussian approximation of the mixture Rasch model

We consider the famous Rasch model, which is applied to psychometric surveys when n persons under test answer m questions. The score is given by a realization of a random binary (n,m)-matrix. Its (j,k)th component indicates whether or not the answer of the jth person to the kth question is correct. In the mixture Rasch model one assumes that the persons are chosen randomly from a population. We prove that the mixture Rasch model is asymptotically equivalent to a Gaussian observation scheme in Le Cam's sense as n tends to infinity and m is allowed to increase slowly in n. For that purpose we show a general result on strong Gaussian approximation of the sum of independent high-dimensional binary random vectors. As a first application we construct an asymptotic confidence region for the difficulty parameters of the questions.

Adaptive function estimation in nonparametric regression with one-sided errors

We consider the model of nonregular nonparametric regression where smoothness constraints are imposed on the regression function $f$ and the regression errors are assumed to decay with some sharpness level at their endpoints. The aim of this paper is to construct an adaptive estimator for the regression function $f$. In contrast to the standard model where local averaging is fruitful, the nonregular conditions require a substantial different treatment based on local extreme values. We study this model under the realistic setting in which both the smoothness degree $β>0$ and the sharpness degree $\mathfrak {a}\in(0,\infty)$ are unknown in advance. We construct adaptation procedures applying a nested version of Lepski's method and the negative Hill estimator which show no loss in the convergence rates with respect to the general $L_q$-risk and a logarithmic loss with respect to the pointwise risk. Optimality of these rates is proved for $\mathfrak{a}\in(0,\infty)$. Some numerical simulations and an application to real data are provided.

Asymptotic equivalence of functional linear regression and a white noise inverse problem

We consider the statistical experiment of functional linear regression (FLR). Furthermore, we introduce a white noise model where one observes an Ito process, which contains the covariance operator of the corresponding FLR model in its construction. We prove asymptotic equivalence of FLR and this white noise model in LeCam's sense under known design distribution. Moreover, we show equivalence of FLR and an empirical version of the white noise model for finite sample sizes. As an application, we derive sharp minimax constants in the FLR model which are still valid in the case of unknown design distribution.

Asymptotic Equivalence for Nonparametric Regression with Non-Regular Errors

Asymptotic equivalence in Le Cam's sense for nonparametric regression experiments is extended to the case of non-regular error densities, which have jump discontinuities at their endpoints. We prove asymptotic equivalence of such regression models and the observation of two independent Poisson point processes which contain the target curve as the support boundary of its intensity function. The intensity of the point processes is of order of the sample size $n$ and involves the jump sizes as well as the design density. The statistical model significantly differs from regression problems with Gaussian or regular errors, which are known to be asymptotically equivalent to Gaussian white noise models.
