Non-perturbative signatures of non-linear Compton scattering

The probabilities of various elementary laser - photon - electron/positron interactions display in selected phase space and parameter regions typical non-perturbative dependencies such as $\propto {\cal P} \exp\{- a E_{crit} /E\}$, where ${\cal P}$ is a pre-exponential factor, $E_{crit}$ denotes the critical Sauter-Schwinger field strength, and $E$ characterizes the (laser) field strength. While the Schwinger process with $a = a_S \equiv π$ and the non-linear Breit-Wheeler process in the tunneling regime with $a = a_{n \ell BW} \equiv 4 m / 3 ω'$ (with $ω'$ the probe photon energy and $m$ the electron/positron mass) are famous results, we point out here that also the non-linear Compton scattering exhibits a similar behavior when focusing on high harmonics. Using a suitable cut-off $c > 0$, the factor $a$ becomes $a = a_{n \ell C} \equiv \frac23 c m /(p_0 + \sqrt{p_0^2 -m^2)}$. This opens the avenue towards a new signature of the boiling point of the vacuum even for field strengths $E$ below $E_{crit}$ by employing a high electron beam-energy $p_0$ to counter balance the large ratio $E_{crit} / E$ by a small factor $a$ to achieve $E / a \to E_{crit}$. In the weak-field regime, the cut-off facilitates a threshold leading to multi-photon signatures showing up in the total cross section at sub-threshold energies.

Non-linear quantum dynamics in strong and short electromagnetic fields

In our contribution we give a brief overview of two widely discussed quantum processes: electron-positron pairs production off a probe photon propagating through a polarized short-pulsed electromagnetic (e.m.) (e.g.\ laser) wave field or generalized Breit-Wheeler process and a single a photon emission off an electron interacting with the laser pules, so-called non-linear Compton scattering. We show that at small and moderate laser field intensities the shape and duration of the pulse are very important for the probability of considered processes. However, at high intensities the multi-photon interactions of the fermions with laser field are decisive and completely determined all aspects of subthreshold electron-positron pairs and photon production

Determination of the carrier envelope phase for short, circularly polarized laser pulses

We analyze the impact of the carrier envelope phase on the differential cross sections of the Breit-Wheeler and the generalized Compton scattering in the interaction of a charged electron (positron) with an intensive ultra-short electromagnetic (laser) pulse. The differential cross sections as a function of the azimuthal angle of the outgoing electron have a clear bump structure, where the bump position coincides with the value of the carrier phase. This effect can be used for the carrier envelope phase determination.

Quantum processes in short and intensive electromagnetic fields

This work provides an overview of our recent results in studying two most important and widely discussed quantum processes: electron-positron pairs production off a probe photon propagating through a polarized short-pulsed electromagnetic (e.g.\ laser) wave field or generalized Breit-Wheeler process, and a single a photon emission off an electron interacting with the laser pules, so-called non-linear Compton scattering. We show that the probabilities of particle production in both processes are determined by interplay of two dynamical effects, where the first one is related to the shape and duration of the pulse and the second one is non-linear dynamics of the interaction of charged fermions with a strong electromagnetic field. We elaborate suitable expressions for the production probabilities and cross sections, convenient for studying evolution of the plasma in presence of strong electromagnetic fields

Laser pulse-shape dependence of Compton scattering

Compton scattering of short and ultra short (sub-cycle) laser pulses off mildly relativistic electrons is considered within a QED framework. The temporal shape of the pulse is essential for the differential cross section as a function of the energy of the scattered photon at fixed observation angle. The partly integrated cross section is sensitive to the non-linear dynamics resulting in a large enhancement of the cross section for short and, in particular, for ultra-short flat-top pulse envelopes which can reach several orders of magnitude, as compared with the case of a long pulse. Such effects can be studied experimentally and must be taken into account in Monte-Carlo/transport simulations of %$e^+e^-$ pair production in the interaction of electrons and photons in a strong laser field.

$ϕ$ photoprodution with coupled-channel effects

We study phi photoproduction with various hadronic rescattering contributions included, in addition to the Pomeron and pseudoscalar meson-exchange diagrams. We find that the hadronic box diagrams can explain the recent experimental data in the vicinity of the threshold. In particular, the bump-like structure at the photon energy E_gamma \approx 2.3$ GeV is well explained by the K Lambda(1520) rescattering amplitude in the intermediate state, which is the dominant contribution among other hadronic contributions. We also find that the hadronic box diagrams are consistent with the observed spin-density matrix elements near the threshold region.

Polarization Observables in Phi Meson Photoproduction and the Strangeness Content of the Proton

The contributions of direct knockout processes, in addition to the diffractive production and one-pion-exchange processes associated with the phi-rho-pi and phi-gamma-pi couplings, to the polarization observables of the phi photoproduction from proton are calculated. We make use of Pomeron-photon analogy and a relativistic harmonic oscillator quark model. We find that some of the double polarization observables are very sensitive to a possible (s s-bar) admixture in the proton. It arises from the difference in the spin structures of the three different amplitudes. This suggests that such measurements could be very useful to probe the strangeness content in the proton.
