Coalescing primordial binary black holes with log-normal mass spectrum

Primordial black holes created in the early Universe can constitute a substantial fraction of dark matter and serve as seeds for early galaxy formation. Binary primordial black holes with masses of the order of a few dozen solar masses can explain the observed LIGO/Virgo gravitational-wave events. In this Letter, we show that primordial black holes with log-normal mass spectrum centered at $M_0\simeq 15-17 M_\odot$ simultaneously explain both the chirp mass distribution of the detected LIGO/Virgo binary black holes and the differential chirp mass distribution of merging binaries as inferred from the LIGO/Virgo observations. The obtained parameters of log-normal mass spectrum of primordial black holes also give the fraction of seeds with $M\gtrsim 10^4 M_\odot$ required to explain the observed population of supermassive black holes at $z=6-7$.

Kinetics of spontaneous baryogenesis in non-stationary background

Generation of the cosmological baryon asymmetry in frameworks of spontaneous baryogenesis is studied in detail. It is shown that the relation between baryonic chemical potential and the time derivative of the (pseudo)Goldstone field essentially depends upon the representation chosen for the fermionic fields with non-zero baryonic number (quarks). Kinetic equation is modified and numerically solved in equilibrium for the case of time dependent external background or finite integration time to be applicable to the case when energy conservation law is formally violated.

Project X: Physics Opportunities

Part 2 of "Project X: Accelerator Reference Design, Physics Opportunities, Broader Impacts". In this Part, we outline the particle-physics program that can be achieved with Project X, a staged superconducting linac for intensity-frontier particle physics. Topics include neutrino physics, kaon physics, muon physics, electric dipole moments, neutron-antineutron oscillations, new light particles, hadron structure, hadron spectroscopy, and lattice-QCD calculations. Part 1 is available as arXiv:1306.5022 [physics.acc-ph] and Part 3 is available as arXiv:1306.5024 [physics.acc-ph].

Liquid Argon Cryogenic Detector Calibration by Inelastic Scattering of Neutrons

A method for calibration of cryogenic liquid argon detector response to recoils with certain energy -8.2 keV - is proposed. The method utilizes a process of inelastic scattering of monoenergetic neutrons produced by fusion DD neutron generator. Features of kinematics of inelastic scattering cause sufficient (forty times) increase in count rate of useful events relative to traditional scheme exploited elastic scattering with the same recoil energy and compatible energy resolution. The benefits of the proposed scheme of calibration most well implemented with the use of tagged neutron generator as a neutron source that allows to eliminate background originated from casual coincidence of signals on cryogenic detector and additional detector of scattered neutrons.

Effect of direct CP violation in charm on gamma extraction from B->DK, D->K0Spi+pi- Dalitz plot analysis

A possible effect of direct CP violation in D->K0Spipi decay on the gamma measurement from B->DK, D->K0Spi+pi- Dalitz plot analysis is considered. Systematic uncertainty of gamma coming from the current limits on direct CP violation in D->K0Spi+pi- is estimated, and a modified model-independent procedure of B->DK, D->K0Spi+pi- Dalitz plot analysis is proposed that gives an unbiased gamma measurement even in presence of direct CP violation in charm decays. The technique is applicable to other three-body D decays such as D->K0SK+K-, D->pi+pi-pi0, etc.

Direct Determination of Hubble Parameter Using Type IIn Supernovae

We introduce a novel approach, a Dense Shell Method (DSM), for measuring distances for cosmology. It is based on original Baade idea to relate absolute difference of photospheric radii with photospheric velocity. We demonstrate that this idea works: the new method does not rely on the Cosmic Distance Ladder and gives satisfactory results for the most luminous Type IIn Supernovae. This allows one to make them good primary distance indicators for cosmology. Fixing correction factors for illustration, we obtain with this method the median distance of 68^{+19}_{-15} (68%CL) Mpc to SN 2006gy and median Hubble parameter 79^{+23}_{-17} (68%CL) km/s/Mpc.
