Non-commutative cluster Lagrangians

The space Loc(m,S) of rank m flat bundles on a closed surface S is K_2-symplectic. A threefold M bounding S gives rise a K_2-Lagrangian in Loc(m,S) given by the flat bundles on S extending to M. We generalize this, replacing the zero section in the cotangent bundle to M by certain singular Lagrangians. First, we introduce Q-diagrams in threefolds. They are collections Q of smooth cooriented surfaces, intersecting transversally everywhere but in a finite set of quadruple crossing points. We require that shifting any surface of the collection from such a point in the direction of its coorientation creates a simplex with the cooriented out faces. The Q-diagrams are 3d analogs of bipartite ribbon graphs. Let L be the Lagrangian in the cotangent bundle to M given by the union of the zero section and the conormal bundles to the cooriented surfaces of Q. Let X(L) be the stack of admissible dg-sheaves on M with the microlocal support in L, whose microlocalization at the conormal bundle to each cooriented surface of Q is a rank one local system. We introduce the boundary dL of L. It is a singular Lagrangian in a symplectic space, providing a symplectic stack X(dL), and a restriction functor from X(L) to X(dL). The image of the latter is Lagrangian. We show that, under mild conditions on Q, this Lagrangian has a cluster description, and so it is a K_2-Lagrangian. It also has a simple description in the non-commutative setting.

Quantum polylogarithms

Multiple polylogarithms are periods of variations of mixed Tate motives. Conjecturally, they deliver all such periods. We introduce deformations of multiple polylogarithms depending on a complex parameter h. We call them quantum polylogarithms. Their asymptotic expansion as h goes to 0 recovers multiple polylogarithms. The quantum dilogarithm was studied by Barnes in the XIX century. Its exponent appears in many areas of Mathematics and Physics. Quantum polylogarithms satisfy a holonomic systems of modular difference equations with coefficients in variations of mixed Hodge-Tate structures of motivic origin. If h is a rational number, the quantum polylogarithms can be expressed via multiple polylogarithms. Otherwise quantum polylogarithms are not periods of variations of mixed motives, i.e. they can not be given by integrals of rational differential forms on algebraic varieties. Instead, quantum polylogarithms are integrals of differential forms built from both rational functions and exponentials of rational functions. We call them rational exponential integrals. We suggest that quantum polylogarithms reflect a very general phenomenon: Periods of variations of mixed motives should have quantum deformations.

Ideal webs, moduli spaces of local systems, and 3d Calabi-Yau categories

A decorated surface S is an oriented surface with punctures and a finite set of marked points on the boundary, such that each boundary component has a marked point. We introduce ideal bipartite graphs on S. Each of them is related to a group G of type A, and gives rise to cluster coordinate systems on certain spaces of G-local systems on S. These coordinate systems generalize the ones assigned to ideal triangulations of S. A bipartite graph on S gives rise to a quiver with a canonical potential. The latter determines a triangulated 3d CY category with a cluster collection of spherical objects. Given an ideal bipartite graph on S, we define an extension of the mapping class group of S which acts by symmetries of the category. There is a family of open CY 3-folds over the universal Hitchin base, whose intermediate Jacobians describe the Hitchin system. We conjecture that the 3d CY category with cluster collection is equivalent to a full subcategory of the Fukaya category of a generic threefold of the family, equipped with a cluster collection of special Lagrangian spheres. For SL(2) a substantial part of the story is already known thanks to Bridgeland, Keller, Labardini-Fragoso, Nagao, Smith, and others. We hope that ideal bipartite graphs provide special examples of the Gaiotto-Moore-Neitzke spectral networks.

K-Decompositions and 3d Gauge Theories

This paper combines several new constructions in mathematics and physics. Mathematically, we study framed flat PGL(K,C)-connections on a large class of 3-manifolds M with boundary. We define a space L_K(M) of framed flat connections on the boundary of M that extend to M. Our goal is to understand an open part of L_K(M) as a Lagrangian in the symplectic space of framed flat connections on the boundary, and as a K_2-Lagrangian, meaning that the K_2-avatar of the symplectic form restricts to zero. We construct an open part of L_K(M) from data assigned to a hypersimplicial K-decomposition of an ideal triangulation of M, generalizing Thurston's gluing equations in 3d hyperbolic geometry, and combining them with the cluster coordinates for framed flat PGL(K)-connections on surfaces. Using a canonical map from the complex of configurations of decorated flags to the Bloch complex, we prove that any generic component of L_K(M) is K_2-isotropic if the boundary satisfies some topological constraints (Theorem 4.2). In some cases this implies that L_K(M) is K_2-Lagrangian. For general M, we extend a classic result of Neumann-Zagier on symplectic properties of PGL(2) gluing equations to reduce the K_2-Lagrangian property to a combinatorial claim. Physically, we use the symplectic properties of K-decompositions to construct 3d N=2 superconformal field theories T_K[M] corresponding (conjecturally) to the compactification of K M5-branes on M. This extends known constructions for K=2. Just as for K=2, the theories T_K[M] are described as IR fixed points of abelian Chern-Simons-matter theories. Changes of triangulation (2-3 moves) lead to abelian mirror symmetries that are all generated by the elementary duality between N_f=1 SQED and the XYZ model. In the large K limit, we find evidence that the degrees of freedom of T_K[M] grow cubically in K.

Exponential complexes, period morphisms, and characteristic classes

We introduce exponential complexes of sheaves on manifolds. They are resolutions of the (Tate twisted) constant sheaves of the rational numbers, generalising the short exact exponential sequence. There are canonical maps from the exponential complexes to the de Rham complex. Using this, we introduce new complexes calculating the rational Deligne cohomology. We call them exponential Deligne complexes. Their advantage is that, at least at the generic point of a complex variety, one can define Beilinson's regulator map to the rational Deligne cohomology on the level of complexes. Namely, we define period morphisms. We use them to produce homomorphisms from motivic complexes to the exponential Deligne complexes at the generic point. Combining this with the construction of Chern classes with coefficients in the bigrassmannian complexes, we get, for the weights up to four, local explicit formulas for the Chern classes in the rational Deligne cohomology via polylogarithms.

Scattering Amplitudes and the Positive Grassmannian

We establish a direct connection between scattering amplitudes in planar four-dimensional theories and a remarkable mathematical structure known as the positive Grassmannian. The central physical idea is to focus on on-shell diagrams as objects of fundamental importance to scattering amplitudes. We show that the all-loop integrand in N=4 SYM is naturally represented in this way. On-shell diagrams in this theory are intimately tied to a variety of mathematical objects, ranging from a new graphical representation of permutations to a beautiful stratification of the Grassmannian G(k,n) which generalizes the notion of a simplex in projective space. All physically important operations involving on-shell diagrams map to canonical operations on permutations; in particular, BCFW deformations correspond to adjacent transpositions. Each cell of the positive Grassmannian is naturally endowed with positive coordinates and an invariant measure which determines the on-shell function associated with the diagram. This understanding allows us to classify and compute all on-shell diagrams, and give a geometric understanding for all the non-trivial relations among them. Yangian invariance of scattering amplitudes is transparently represented by diffeomorphisms of G(k,n) which preserve the positive structure. Scattering amplitudes in (1+1)-dimensional integrable systems and the ABJM theory in (2+1) dimensions can both be understood as special cases of these ideas. On-shell diagrams in theories with less (or no) supersymmetry are associated with exactly the same structures in the Grassmannian, but with a measure deformed by a factor encoding ultraviolet singularities. The Grassmannian representation of on-shell processes also gives a new understanding of the all-loop integrand for scattering amplitudes, presenting all integrands in a novel dLog form which directly reflects the underlying positive structure.

Motivic Amplitudes and Cluster Coordinates

In this paper we study motivic amplitudes--objects which contain all of the essential mathematical content of scattering amplitudes in planar SYM theory in a completely canonical way, free from the ambiguities inherent in any attempt to choose particular functional representatives. We find that the cluster structure on the kinematic configuration space Conf_n(P^3) underlies the structure of motivic amplitudes. Specifically, we compute explicitly the coproduct of the two-loop seven-particle MHV motivic amplitude A_{7,2} and find that like the previously known six-particle amplitude, it depends only on certain preferred coordinates known in the mathematics literature as cluster X-coordinates on Conf_n(P^3). We also find intriguing relations between motivic amplitudes and the geometry of generalized associahedrons, to which cluster coordinates have a natural combinatoric connection. For example, the obstruction to A_{7,2} being expressible in terms of classical polylogarithms is most naturally represented by certain quadrilateral faces of the appropriate associahedron. We also find and prove the first known functional equation for the trilogarithm in which all 40 arguments are cluster X-coordinates of a single algebra. In this respect it is similar to Abel's 5-term dilogarithm identity.

Classical Polylogarithms for Amplitudes and Wilson Loops

We present a compact analytic formula for the two-loop six-particle MHV remainder function (equivalently, the two-loop light-like hexagon Wilson loop) in N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in terms of the classical polylogarithm functions Li_k with cross-ratios of momentum twistor invariants as their arguments. In deriving our result we rely on results from the theory of motives.
