Topological phase transitions in glassy quantum matter

Amorphous systems have rapidly gained promise as novel platforms for topological matter. In this work we establish a scaling theory of amorphous topological phase transitions driven by the density of lattice points in two dimensions. By carrying out a finite-size scaling analysis of topological invariants averaged over discrete and continuum random geometries, we discover unique critical properties of Chern and $\mathbb{Z}_2$ glass transitions. Even for short-range hopping models the Chern glass phase may persist down to the fundamental lower bound given by the classical percolation threshold. While the topological indices accurately satisfy the postulated one-parameter scaling, they do not generally flow to the closest integer value in the thermodynamic limit. Furthermore, the value of the critical exponent describing the diverging localization length varies continuously along the phase boundary and is not fixed by the symmetry class of the Hamiltonian. We conclude that the critical behaviour of amorphous topological systems exhibit characteristic features not observed in disordered systems, motivating a wealth of new research directions.

Skyrmion-induced subgap states in p-wave superconductors

In s-wave systems, it has been theoretically shown that a ferromagnetic film hosting a skyrmion can induce a bound state embedded in the opposite-spin continuum. In this work, we consider a case of skyrmion-induced state in a p-wave superconductor. We find that the skyrmion induces a bound state that generally resides \emph{within} the spectral gap and is isolated from all other states, in contrast to the case of conventional superconductors. To this end, we derive an approximate expression for the $T$-matrix, through which we calculate the spin-polarized local density of states which is observable in scanning tunneling microscopy measurements. We find the unique spectroscopic features of the skyrmion-induced bound state and discuss how our predictions could be employed as novel experimental probes for p-wave superconducting states.

Topological superconductivity and anti-Shiba states in disordered chains of magnetic adatoms

Regular arrays of magnetic atoms on a superconductor provide a promising platform for topological superconductivity. In this work we study effects of disorder in these systems, focusing on vacancies realized by missing magnetic atoms. We develop approaches that allow treatment of ferromagnetic dense chains as well as long-range hopping ferromagnetic and helical Shiba chains at arbitrary subgap energies. Vacancies in magnetic chains play an analogous role to magnetic impurities in a clean $s$-wave superconductor. A single vacancy in a topological chain gives rise to a low-lying "anti-Shiba" state below the band edge of a regular magnetic chain. Proliferation of the anti-Shiba band formed by a finite density of hybridized vacancy states leads to deterioration of the topological phase, which exhibits unusual fragility in a particular parameter region in dilute chains. We also consider local fluctuation in the Shiba coupling and discuss how vacancy states could contribute to experimental verification of topological superconductivity.

Topological superconductivity in ferromagnetic atom chains beyond the deep-impurity regime

Recent developments in the search for topological superconductivity have brought lattices of magnetic adatoms on a superconductor into intense focus. In this work we will study ferromagnetic chains of adatoms on superconducting surfaces with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Generalising the deep-impurity approach employed extensively in previous works to arbitrary subgap energies, we formulate the theory of the subgap spectrum as a nonlinear matrix eigenvalue problem. We obtain an essentially analytical description of the subgap spectrum, allowing an efficient study of the topological properties. Employing a flat-band Hamiltonian sharing the topological properties of the chain, we evaluate the $\mathbb{Z}$-valued winding number and discover five distinct topological phases. Our results also confirm that the topological band formation does not require the decoupled Shiba energies to be fine-tuned to the gap centre. We also study the properties of Majorana bound states in the system.

Topological properties of helical Shiba chains with general impurity strength and hybridization

Recent experiments announced an observation of topological superconductivity and Majorana quasiparticles in Shiba chains, consisting of an array of magnetic atoms deposited on top of a superconductor. In this work we study helical Shiba chains and generalize the microscopic theory of subgap energy bands to a regime where the decoupled magnetic impurity energy and the hybridization of different impurity states can be significant compared to the superconducting gap of the host material. From exact solutions of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation we extract expressions for the topological phase boundaries for arbitrary values of the superconducting coherence length. The subgap spectral problem can be formulated as a nonlinear matrix eigenvalue problem from which we obtain an analytical solution for energy bands in the long coherence length limit. Physical consequences and departures from the previously obtained results in the deep-dilute impurity limit are discussed in detail.

Majorana states in helical Shiba chains and ladders

Motivated by recent proposals to realize Majorana bound states in chains and arrays of magnetic atoms deposited on top of a superconductor, we study the topological properties of various chain structures, ladders and two-dimensional arrangements exhibiting magnetic helices. We show that magnetic domain walls where the chirality of a magnetic helix is inverted support two protected Majorana states giving rise to a tunneling conductance peak twice the height of a single Majorana state. The topological properties of coupled chains exhibit nontrivial behaviour as a function of the number of chains beyond the even-odd dichotomy expected from the simple $\mathbb{Z}_2$ nature of coupled Majorana states. In addition, it is possible that a ladder of two or more coupled chains exhibit Majorana edge states even when decoupled chains are trivial. We formulate a general criterion for the number of Majorana edge states in multichain ladders and discuss some experimental consequences of our findings.
