Formal exponentials and linearisations of QP-manifolds

We define formal exponential maps for any graded manifold as maps from the formal tangent bundle (that we also define) into the graded manifold. We show that each such map uniquely determines and is determined by its associated Grothendieck connection, which is shown to be flat, and to furnish a resolution of the ring of functions. We then show how a recent construction involving the data of a connection on the tangent bundle recovers a large class of formal exponentials in our definition. As an application, we use a formal exponential map to linearise a QP-manifold at a point. This gives the formal tangent space at each point the structure of an $L_\infty$-algebra with invariant inner product.

Romans massive QP manifolds

We introduce QP manifolds that capture the generalised geometry of type IIA string backgrounds with Ramond-Ramond fluxes and Romans mass. Each of these is associated to a BPS brane in type IIA: a D2, D4, or NS5-brane. We explain how these probe branes are related to their associated QP-manifolds via the AKSZ topological field theory construction and the recent brane phase space construction. M-theory/type IIA duality is realised on the QP-manifold side as symplectic reduction along the M-theory circle (for branes that do not wrap it); this always produces IIA QP-manifolds with vanishing Romans mass.

Homotopy Transfer and Effective Field Theory I: Tree-level

We use the dictionary between general field theories and strongly homotopy algebras to provide an algebraic formulation of the procedure of integrating out of degrees of freedom in terms of homotopy transfer. This includes more general effective theories in which some massive modes are kept while other modes of a comparable mass scale are integrated out, as first explored by Sen in the context of closed string field theory. We treat $L_\infty$-algebras both in terms of a nilpotent coderivation and, on the dual space, in terms of a nilpotent derivation (corresponding to the BRST charge of the field theory) and provide explicit formulas for homotopy transfer. These are then shown to govern the integrating out of degrees of freedom at tree level, while the generalization to loop level will be explored in a sequel to this paper.

Higher spins from Nambu-Chern-Simons theory

We propose a new theory of higher spin gravity in three spacetime dimensions. This is defined by what we will call a Nambu-Chern-Simons (NCS) action; this is to a Nambu 3-algebra as an ordinary Chern-Simons (CS) action is to a Lie (2-)algebra. The novelty is that the gauge group of this theory is simple; this stands in contrast to previously understood interacting 3D higher spin theories in the frame-like formalism. We also consider the $N=8$ supersymmetric NCS-matter model (BLG theory), where the NCS action originated: Its fully supersymmetric M2 brane configurations are interpreted as Hopf fibrations, the homotopy type of the (infinite) gauge group is calculated and its instantons are classified.

Worldline CPT and massless supermultiplets

The action for a massless particle in 4D Minkowski space has a worldline time-reversing symmetry corresponding to CPT invariance of the quantum theory. The analogous symmetry of the N-extended superparticle is shown to be anomalous when N is odd, in the supertwistor formalism this is because a CPT-violating worldline-Chern-Simons term is needed to preserve the chiral U(1) gauge invariance. This accords with the fact that no massless N=1 super-Poincaré irrep is CPT-self-conjugate. There is a CPT self-conjugate supermultiplet when N is even, but it has $2^{N+1}$ states when N/2 is odd (e.g. the N=2 hypermultiplet) in contrast to just $2^N$ when N/2 is even (e.g. the N=4 Maxwell supermultiplet). This is shown to follow from a Kramers degeneracy of the superparticle state space when N/2 is odd.

Minimal Massive 3D Gravity Unitarity Redux

A geometrical analysis of the bulk and anti-de Sitter boundary unitarity conditions of 3D "Minimal Massive Gravity" (MMG) (which evades the "bulk/boundary clash" of Topologically Massive Gravity) is used to extend and simplify previous results, showing that unitarity selects, up to equivalence, a connected region in parameter space. We also initiate the study of flat-space holography for MMG. Its relevant flat space limit is a deformation of 3D conformal gravity; the deformation is both non-linear and non-conformal, implying a linearisation instability.

On Solutions of Minimal Massive 3D Gravity

We look at solutions of Minimal Massive Gravity (MMG), a generalisation of Topologically Massive Gravity (TMG) that improves upon its holographic properties. It is shown that generically (in MMG parameter space) all conformally flat solutions of vacuum MMG are locally isometric to one of the two (A)dS vacua of the theory. We then couple a scalar field, and find that domain wall solutions can only interpolate between these two vacua precisely when the bulk graviton is tachyonic. Finally, we find a non-BTZ AdS black hole solution satisfying Brown-Henneaux boundary conditions, which lies within the "bulk/ boundary unitarity region".

Yang-Mills as massive Chern-Simons theory: a third way to three-dimensional gauge theories

The Yang-Mills (YM) equation in three spacetime dimensions (3D) can be modified to include a novel parity-preserving interaction term, with inverse mass parameter, in addition to a possible topological mass term. The novelty is that the modified YM equation is not the Euler-Lagrange equation of any gauge-invariant local action for the YM gauge potential alone. Instead, consistency is achieved in the "third way" exploited by 3D "minimal massive gravity". We relate our results to the "novel Higgs mechanism" for Chern-Simons gauge theories.

Matter coupling in 3D "Minimal Massive Gravity"

The "Minimal Massive Gravity" (MMG) model of massive gravity in three spacetime dimensions (which has the same anti-de Sitter (AdS) bulk properties as "Topologically Massive Gravity" but improved boundary properties) is coupled to matter. Consistency requires a particular matter source tensor, which is quadratic in the stress tensor. The consequences are explored for an ideal fluid in the context of asymptotically de-Sitter (dS) cosmological solutions, which bounce smoothly from contraction to expansion. Various vacuum solutions are also found, including warped-(A)dS, and (for special values of parameters) static black holes and an (A)dS2 x S1 vacuum.
