Conditions for observing emergent SU(4) symmetry in a double quantum dot

We analyze conditions for the observation of a low energy SU(4) fixed point in capacitively coupled quantum dots. One problem, due to dots with different couplings to their baths, has been considered by Tosi, Roura-Bas and Aligia (2015). They showed how symmetry can be effectively restored via the adjustment of individual gates voltages, but they make the assumption of infinite on-dot and inter-dot interaction strengths. A related problem is the difference in the magnitudes between the on-dot and interdot strengths for capacitively coupled quantum dots. Here we examine both factors, based on a two site Anderson model, using the numerical renormalization group to calculate the local spectral densities on the dots and the renormalized parameters that specify the low energy fixed point. Our results support the conclusions of Tosi et al. that low energy SU(4) symmetry can be restored, but asymptotically achieved only if the inter-dot interaction $U_{12}$ is greater than or of the order of the band width of the coupled conduction bath $D$, which might be difficult to achieve experimentally. By comparing the SU(4) Kondo results for a total dot occupation $n_{\rm tot}=1$ and $n_{\rm tot}=2$ we conclude that the temperature dependence of the conductance is largely determined by the constraints of the Friedel sum rule rather than the SU(4) symmetry and suggest that an initial increase of the conductance with temperature is a distinguishing characteristic feature of an $n_{\rm tot}=1$ universal SU(4) fixed point.

High-order terms in the renormalized perturbation theory for the Anderson impurity model

We study the renormalized perturbation theory of the single-impurity Anderson model, particularly the high-order terms in the expansion of the self-energy in powers of the renormalized coupling $\tilde{U}$. Though the presence of counter-terms in the renormalized theory may appear to complicate the diagrammatics, we show how these can be seamlessly accommodated by carrying out the calculation order-by-order in terms of skeleton diagrams. We describe how the diagrams pertinent to the renormalized self-energy and four-vertex can be automatically generated, translated into integrals and numerically integrated. To maximize the efficiency of our approach we introduce a generalized $k$-particle/hole propagator, which is used to analytically simplify the resultant integrals and reduce the dimensionality of the integration. We present results for the self-energy and spectral density to fifth order in $\tilde{U}$, for various values of the model asymmetry, and compare them to a Numerical Renormalization Group calculation.

Analytic results for the Anderson Impurity Model

In the Renormalised Perturbation Theory (RPT) the Anderson impurity model is interpreted in terms of renormalised parameters $\boldsymbol{\tildeμ}= (\tildeε_d, \tildeΔ, \tilde{U})$ which are in a one-to-one correspondence with the bare impurity level $ε_d$, hybridisation $Δ$ and on-site interaction $U$. Though the renormalised parameters suffice to describe the low-energy fixed point of the model, the parameters themselves usually have to be determined using the Numerical Renormalisation Group. In this paper we address this issue by applying the flow equation method to the particle-hole symmetric model to derive a system of differential equations for $ \textrm{d}\boldsymbol{\tildeμ}/ \textrm{d} U$. To leading order in $\tilde{U}$ this assumes a particularly simple form, permitting its analytic solution in this approximation. We find that our results for the renormalised parameters are in good agreement with the NRG and use them to calculate the Wilson ratio, spin susceptibility and conductance of the impurity.

Analysis of low energy response and possible emergent SU(4) Kondo state in a double quantum dot

We examine the low energy behavior of a double quantum dot in a regime where spin and pseudospin excitations are degenerate. The individual quantum dots are described by Anderson impurity models with an on-site interaction $U$ which are capacitively coupled by an interdot interaction $U_{12}<U$. The low energy response functions are expressed in terms of renormalized parameters, which can be deduced from an analysis of the fixed point in a numerical renormalization group calculation. At the point where the spin and pseudospin degrees of freedom become degenerate, the free quasiparticle excitations have a phase shift of $π/4$ and a 4-fold degeneracy. We find, however, when the quasiparticle interactions are included, that the low energy effective model has SU(4) symmetry only in the special case $U_{12}=U$ unless both $U$ and $U_{12}$ are greater than $D$, the half-bandwidth of the conduction electron bath. We show that the gate voltage dependence of the temperature dependent differential conductance observed in recent experiments can be described by a quasiparticle density of states with temperature dependent renormalized parameters.

Extremely Correlated Fermi Liquid study of the U=infinity Anderson Impurity Model

We apply the recently developed extremely correlated Fermi liquid theory to the Anderson impurity model, in the extreme correlation limit. We develop an expansion in a parameter λ, related to n_d, the average occupation of the localized orbital, and find analytic expressions for the Green's functions to O(λ^2). These yield the impurity spectral function and also the self-energy Σ(ω) in terms of the two self energies of the ECFL formalism. The imaginary parts of the latter, have roughly symmetric low energy behaviour (~ ω^2), as predicted by Fermi Liquid theory. However, the inferred impurity self energy Σ"(ω) develops asymmetric corrections near n_d ~ 1, leading in turn to a strongly asymmetric impurity spectral function with a skew towards the occupied states. Within this approximation the Friedel sum rule is satisfied but we overestimate the quasiparticle weight z relative to the known exact results, resulting in an over broadening of the Kondo peak. Upon scaling the frequency by the quasiparticle weight z, the spectrum is found to be in reasonable agreement with numerical renormalization group results over a wide range of densities.

Full counting statistics for orbital-degenerate impurity Anderson model with Hund's rule exchange coupling

We study non-equilibrium current fluctuations through a quantum dot, which includes a ferromagnetic Hund's rule coupling $J$, in the low-energy Fermi liquid regime using the renormalized perturbation theory. The resulting cumulant for the current distribution in the particle-hole symmetric case, shows that spin-triplet and spin-singlet pairs of quasiparticles are formed in the current due to the Hund's rule coupling and these pairs enhance the current fluctuations. In the fully screened higher-spin Kondo limit, the Fano factor takes a value $F_b = (9M+6)/ (5M+4)$ determined by the orbital degeneracy $M$. We also investigate crossover between the small and large $J$ limits in the two-orbital case M=2, using the numerical renormalization group approach.

Competition between antiferromagnetic and charge order in the Hubbard-Holstein model

We study the competition between an instantaneous local Coulomb repulsion and a boson mediated retarded attraction, as described by the Hubbard-Holstein model. Restricting to the case of half filling, the ground-state phase diagram and the transitions from antiferromagnetically ordered states to charge ordered states are analyzed. The calculations are based on the model in large dimensions, so that dynamical mean field theory can be applied, and the associated impurity problem is solved using the numerical renormalization group method. The transition is found to occur when electron-electron coupling strength $U$ and the induced interaction $λ$ due to electron-phonon coupling approximately coincide, $U\simeq λ$. We find a continuous transition for small coupling and large $ω_0$, and a discontinuous one for large coupling and/or small $ω_0$. We present results for the order parameters, the static expectation values for the electrons and phonons, and the corresponding spectral functions. They illustrate the different types of behavior to be seen near the transitions. Additionally, the quasiparticle properties are calculated in the normal state, which leads to a consistent interpretation of the low energy excitations.

Numerical Renormalization Group Study of Probability Distributions for Local Fluctuations in the Anderson-Holstein and Holstein-Hubbard Models

We show that information on the probability density of local fluctuations can be obtained from a numerical renormalisation group calculation of a reduced density matrix. We apply this approach to the Anderson-Holstein impurity model to calculate the ground state probability density $ρ(x)$ for the displacement $x$ of the local oscillator. From this density we can deduce an effective local potential for the oscillator and compare its form with that obtained from a semiclassical approximation as a function of the coupling strength. The method is extended to infinite dimensional Holstein-Hubbard model using dynamical mean field theory. We use this approach to compare the probability densities for the displacement of the local oscillator in the normal, antiferromagnetic and charge ordered phases.

Quantum phase transition between antiferromagnetic and charge order in the Hubbard-Holstein model

We explore the quantum phase transitions between two ordered states in the infinite dimensional Hubbard-Holstein model at half filling. Our study is based on the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) combined with the numerical renormalization group (NRG), which allows us to handle both strong electron-electron and strong electron-phonon interactions. The transition line is characterized by an effective electron-electron interaction. Depending on this effective interaction and the phonon frequency $ω_0$ one finds either a continuous transition or discontinuous transition. Here, the analysis focuses on the behavior of the system when the electron-electron repulsion $U$ and the phonon-mediated attraction $λ$ are equal. We first discuss the adiabatic and antiadiabatic limiting cases. For finite $ω_0$ we study the differences between the antiferromagnetic (AFM) and charge order, and find that when present the AFM state has a lower energy on the line.

Renormalized parameters and perturbation theory for an n-channel Anderson model with Hund's rule coupling: Asymmetric case

We explore the predictions of the renormalized perturbation theory for an n-channel Anderson model, both with and without Hund's rule coupling, in the regime away from particle-hole symmetry. For the model with n=2 we deduce the renormalized parameters from numerical renormalization group calculations, and plot them as a function of the occupation at the impurity site, nd. From these we deduce the spin, orbital and charge susceptibilities, Wilson ratios and quasiparticle density of states at T=0, in the different parameter regimes, which gives a comprehensive overview of the low energy behavior of the model. We compare the difference in Kondo behaviors at the points where nd=1 and nd=2. One unexpected feature of the results is the suppression of the charge susceptibility in the strong correlation regime over the occupation number range 1 <nd <3.

Kondo effects in a triangular triple quantum dot: NRG study in the whole region of the electron filling

We study the low-energy properties of a triangular triple quantum dot connected to two non-interacting leads in a wide parameter range, using the numerical renormalization group (NRG). Various kinds of Kondo effects take place in this system depending on the electron filling N_{tot}, or the level position $ε_d$ of the triple dot. The SU(4) Kondo behavior is seen in the half-filled case N_{tot} = 3.0 at the dip of the series conductance, and it causes a charge redistribution between the even and odd orbitals in the triangle. We show generally that the quasi-particle excitations from a local Fermi-liquid ground state acquire a channel symmetry at zero points of the two-terminal conductance, in the case the system has time-reversal and inversion symmetries. It causes the SU(4) behavior at low energies, while the orbital degeneracy in the triangle determines the high-energy behavior. At four-electron filling N_{tot} = 4.0, a local S=1 moment emerges at high temperatures due to a Nagaoka ferromagnetic mechanism. It is fully screened by the electrons from the two conducting channels via a two-stage Kondo effect, which is caused by a difference in the charge distribution in the even and odd orbitals.
