Creation and robustness of quantized vortices in a dipolar supersolid when crossing the superfluid-to-supersolid transition

Experiments on dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates have recently reported the observation of supersolidity. Although quantized vortices constitute a key probe of superfluidity, their observability in dipolar supersolids is largely prevented by the strong density depletion caused by the formation of droplets. We present a novel approach to the nucleation of vortices and their observation, based on the quenching of the s-wave scattering length across the superfluid-supersolid transition. Starting from a slowly rotating, vortex-free, configuration in the superfluid phase, we predict vortex nucleation as the system enters the supersolid phase, due to the strong reduction of the critical angular velocity in the supersolid. Once a vortex is created, we show that it is robustly preserved when the condensate is brought back to the superfluid phase, where it may be readily observed.

Observation of Massless and Massive Collective Excitations with Faraday Patterns in a Two-Component Superfluid

We report on the experimental measurement of the dispersion relation of the density and spin collective excitation modes in an elongated two-component superfluid of ultracold bosonic atoms. Our parametric spectroscopic technique is based on the external modulation of the transverse confinement frequency, leading to the formation of density and spin Faraday waves. We show that the application of a coherent coupling between the two components reduces the phase symmetry and gives a finite mass to the spin modes.

Coherently Coupled Mixtures of Bose-Einstein Condensed Gases

This paper summarizes some of the relevant features exhibited by bi-nary mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates in the presence of coherent coupling at zero temperature. The coupling, which is experimentally produced by proper photon transitions, can either involve negligible momentum transfer from the electromagnetic radiation (Rabi coupling) or large momentum transfer (Raman coupling) associated with spin-orbit effects. The nature of the quantum phases exhibited by coherently coupled mixtures is discussed in detail, including their paramagnetic, ferromagnetic, and, in the case of spin-orbit coupling, supersolid phases. The behavior of the corresponding elementary excitations is discussed, with explicit emphasis on the novel features caused by the spin-like degree of freedom. Focus is further given to the topological excitations (solitons, vortices) as well as to the superfluid properties. The paper also points out relevant open questions which deserve more systematic theoretical and experimental investigations.

Finite temperature spin dynamics of a two-dimensional Bose-Bose atomic mixture

We examine the role of thermal fluctuations in uniform two-dimensional binary Bose mixtures of dilute ultracold atomic gases. We use a mean-field Hartree-Fock theory to derive analytical predictions for the miscible-immiscible transition. A nontrivial result of this theory is that a fully miscible phase at $T=0$ may become unstable at $T\neq0$, as a consequence of a divergent behaviour in the spin susceptibility. We test this prediction by performing numerical simulations with the Stochastic (Projected) Gross-Pitaevskii equation, which includes beyond mean-field effects. We calculate the equilibrium configurations at different temperatures and interaction strengths and we simulate spin oscillations produced by a weak external perturbation. Despite some qualitative agreement, the comparison between the two theories shows that the mean-field approximation is not able to properly describe the behavior of the two-dimensional mixture near the miscible-immiscible transition, as thermal fluctuations smoothen all sharp features both in the phase diagram and in spin dynamics, except for temperature well below the critical temperature for superfluidity.

Impurity dephasing in a Bose-Hubbard model

We study the dynamics of a two-level impurity embedded in a two-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model at zero temperature from an open quantum system perspective. Results for the decoherence across the whole phase diagram are presented, with a focus on the critical region close to the transition between superfluid and Mott insulator. In particular, we show how the decoherence and the deviation from a Markovian behaviour are sensitive to whether the transition is crossed at commensurate or incommensurate densities. The role of the spectrum of the Bose-Hubbard environment and its non-Gaussian statistics, beyond the standard independent boson model, is highlighted. Our analysis resorts on a recently developed method [Phys. Rev. Research 2, 033276 (2020)] - closely related to slave boson approaches - that enables us to capture the correlations across the whole phase diagram. This semi-analytical method provides us with a deep insight into the physics of the spin decoherence in the superfluid and Mott phases as well as close to the phase transitions.

Stochastic Dynamics and Bound States of Heavy Impurities in a Fermi Bath

We investigate the dynamics of heavy impurities embedded in an ultra-cold Fermi gas by using a Generalized Langevin equation. The latter -- derived by means of influence functional theory -- describes the stochastic classical dynamics of the impurities and the quantum nature of the fermionic bath manifests in the emergent interaction between the impurities and in the viscosity tensor. By focusing on the two-impurity case, we predict the existence of bound states, in different conditions of coupling and temperature, and whose life-time can be analytically estimated. Our predictions should be testable using cold-gases platforms within current technology.

Supersolid edge and bulk phases of a dipolar quantum gas in a box

We investigate the novel density distributions acquired by a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensed gas confined in a box potential, with special focus on the effects of supersolidity. Differently from the case of harmonic trapping, the ground state density reveals a strong depletion in the bulk region and an accumulation of atoms near the walls, well separated from the bulk, as a consequence of the competition between the attractive and the repulsive nature of the dipolar force. In a quasi two-dimensional geometry characterized by cylindrical box trapping, we observe the emergence of a ring-like configuration near the boundary of the box, reveling peculiar supersolid and crystal effects in a useful range of parameters. In the case of square box trapping the density oscillations along the edges, caused by the enhanced accumulation of atoms near the vertices, exhibit interesting analogies with the case of box trapped one dimensional configurations. For sufficiently large values of the atom number also the bulk region can exhibit supersolidity, the resulting geometry reflecting the symmetry of the confining potential even for large systems.

Quantum fluctuations beyond the Gutzwiller approximation in the Bose-Hubbard model

We develop a quantum many-body theory of the Bose-Hubbard model based on the canonical quantization of the action derived from a Gutzwiller mean-field ansatz. Our theory is a systematic generalization of the Bogoliubov theory of weakly-interacting gases. The control parameter of the theory, defined as the zero point fluctuations on top of the Gutzwiller mean-field state, remains small in all regimes. The approach provides accurate results throughout the whole phase diagram, from the weakly to the strongly interacting superfluid and into the Mott insulating phase. As specific examples of application, we study the two-point correlation functions, the superfluid stiffness, the density fluctuations, for which quantitative agreement with available quantum Monte Carlo data is found. In particular, the two different universality classes of the superfluid-insulator quantum phase transition at integer and non-integer filling are recovered.

Supersolidity of cnoidal waves in an ultracold Bose gas

A one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate may experience nonlinear periodic modulations known as "cnoidal waves". We argue that such structures represent promising candidates for the study of supersolidity-related phenomena in a non-equilibrium state. A mean-field treatment makes it possible to rederive Leggett's formula for the superfluid fraction of the system and to estimate it analytically. We determine the excitation spectrum, for which we obtain analytical results in the two opposite limiting cases of (i) a linearly modulated background and (ii) a train of dark solitons. The presence of two Goldstone (gapless) modes -- associated with the spontaneous breaking of $\mathrm{U}(1)$ symmetry and of continuous translational invariance -- at large wavelength is verified. We also calculate the static structure factor and the compressibility of cnoidal waves, which show a divergent behavior at the edges of each Brillouin zone.

Spin-dipole mode in a trapped Fermi gas near unitarity

We theoretically investigate the spin-dipole oscillation of a strongly interacting Fermi gas in a harmonic trap. By using a combined diagrammatic strong-coupling theory with a local density approximation and a sum rule approach, we clarify the temperature dependence of the spin-dipole frequency near the unitarity, which is deeply related to the spin susceptibility, as well as pairing correlations. While the spin-dipole frequency exactly coincides with the trap frequency in a non-interacting Fermi gas, it is shown to remarkably be enhanced in the superfluid state, because of the suppression of the spin degree of freedom due to the spin-singlet Cooper-pair formation. In strongly interacting Fermi gases, this enhancement occurs even above the superfluid phase transition temperature, due to the strong pairing correlations.

Confinement and precession of vortex pairs in coherently coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

The dynamic behavior of vortex pairs in two-component coherently (Rabi) coupled Bose-Einstein condensates is investigated in the presence of harmonic trapping. We discuss the role of the surface tension associated with the domain wall connecting two vortices in condensates of atoms occupying different spin states and its effect on the precession of the vortex pair. The results, based on the numerical solution of the Gross-Pitaevskii equations, are compared with the predictions of an analytical macroscopic model and are discussed as a function of the size of the pair, the Rabi coupling and the inter-component interaction. We show that the increase of the Rabi coupling results in the disintegration of the domain wall into smaller pieces, connecting vortices of new-created vortex pairs. The resulting scenario is the analogue of quark confinement and string breaking in quantum chromodynamics.

Dark-Bright Solitons in a Superfluid Bose-Fermi Mixture

The recent experimental realization of Bose-Fermi superfluid mixtures of dilute ultracold atomic gases has opened new perspectives in the study of quantum many-body systems. Depending on the values of the scattering lengths and the amount of bosons and fermions, a uniform Bose-Fermi mixture is predicted to exhibit a fully mixed phase, a fully separated phase or, in addition, a purely fermionic phase coexisting with a mixed phase. The occurrence of this intermediate configuration has interesting consequences when the system is nonuniform. In this work we theoretically investigate the case of solitonic solutions of coupled Bogoliubov-de Gennes and Gross-Pitaevskii equations for the fermionic and bosonic components, respectively. We show that, in the partially separated phase, a dark soliton in Fermi superfluid is accompanied by a broad bosonic component in the soliton, forming a dark-bright soliton which keeps full spatial coherence.

A toy model for the dipolar-induced resonance in quasi-one-dimensional systems

We discuss the properties of the effective dipolar interaction for two particles tightly confined along a one-dimensional tube, stressing the emergence of a single dipolar-induced resonance in a regime for which two classical dipoles would just repel each other. We present a toy-model potential reproducing the main features of the effective interaction: a non-zero-range repulsive potential competing with an attractive contact term. The existence of a single resonance is confirmed analytically. The toy model is than generalized to investigate the interplay between dipolar and contact interaction, giving an intuitive interpretation of the resonance mechanism.

Momentum-dependent pseudo-spin dimers of coherently coupled bosons in optical lattices

We study the two-body bound and scattering states of two particles in a one dimensional optical lattice in the presence of a coherent coupling between two internal atomic levels. Due to the interplay between periodic potential, interactions and coherent coupling, the internal structure of the bound states depends on their center of mass momentum. This phenomenon corresponds to an effective momentum-dependent magnetic field for the dimer pseudo-spin, which could be observed in a chirping of the precession frequency during Bloch oscillations. The essence of this effect can be easily interpreted in terms of an effective bound state Hamiltonian. Moreover for indistinguishable bosons, the two-body eigenstates can present simultaneously attractive and repulsive bound-state nature or even bound and scattering properties.

Spin dipole oscillation and relaxation of coherently coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the static and the dynamic response of coherently coupled two component Bose-Einstein condensates due to a spin-dipole perturbation. The static dipole susceptibility is determined and it is shown to be a key quantity to identify the second order ferromagnetic transition occurring at large inter-species interaction. The dynamics, which is obtained by quenching the spin-dipole perturbation, is very much affected by the system being paramagnetic or ferromagnetic and by the correlation between the motional and the internal degrees of freedom. In the paramagnetic phase the gas exhibits well defined out-of-phase dipole oscillations, whose frequency can be related to the susceptibility of the system using a sum rule approach. In particular in the interaction SU (2) symmetric case, i.e., all the two-body interactions are the same, the external dipole oscillation coincides with the internal Rabi flipping frequency. In the ferromagnetic case, where linear response theory in not applicable, the system show highly non linear dynamics. In particular we observe phenomena related to ground state selection: the gas, initially trapped in a domain wall configuration, reaches a final state corresponding to the magnetic ground state plus small density ripples. Interestingly the time during which the gas is unable to escape from its initial configuration is found to be proportional to the square root of the wall surface tension.

Chandrasekhar-Clogston limit and critical polarization in a Fermi-Bose superfluid mixture

We study mixtures of a population-imbalanced strongly-interacting Fermi gas and of a Bose-Einstein condensed gas at zero temperature. In the homogeneous case, we find that the Chandrasekhar-Clogston critical polarization for the onset of instability of Fermi superfluidity is enhanced due to the interaction with the bosons. Predictions for the critical polarization are also given in the trapped case, with a special focus to the situation of equal Fermi-Bose and Bose-Bose coupling constants, where the density of fermions becomes flat in the center of the trap. This regime can be realized experimentally using Feshbach resonances and is well suited to investigate the emergence of exotic configurations, such as the occurrence of spin domains or the FFLO phase.

Dynamics of highly unbalanced Bose-Bose mixtures: miscible vs immiscible gases

We study the collective modes of the minority component of a highly unbalanced Bose-Bose mixtures. In the miscible case the minority component feels an effective external potential and we derive an analytical expression for the mode frequencies. The latter is independent of the minority component interaction strength. In the immiscible case we find that the ground state can be a two-domain walls soliton. Although the mode frequencies are continuous at the transition, their behaviour is very different with respect to the miscible case. The dynamical behaviour of the solitonic structure and the frequency dependence on the inter- and intra-species interaction is numerically studied using coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations.

Polar molecules in bilayers with high population imbalance

We investigate a dilute Fermi gas of polar molecules confined into a bilayer setup with dipole moments polarized perpendicular to the layers. In particular, we consider the extreme case of population imbalance, where we have only one particle in one layer and many particles in the other one. The single molecule is attracted by the dilute Fermi-gas through the inter-layer dipole-dipole force presenting an interesting impurity problem with longrange anistropic interaction. We calulate the chemical potential of the impurity, in second order perturbation theory and in ladder approximation with a Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach. Moreover, we determine the momentum relaxation rate of the impurity, which is related to the "dipolar" drag effect. For a confined system we relate the results for the chemical potential with the measurement of the collective modes of the impurity. The momentum relaxation rate provide instead an estimate on how quickly the oscillations are damped.

Quadrupole oscillation in a dipolar Fermi gas: hydrodynamic vs collisionless regime

The surface quadrupole mode of an harmonically trapped dipolar Fermi gas is studied in both the hydrodynamic and collisionless regimes. The anisotropy and long range effects of the dipolar force as well as the role of the trapping geometry are explicitly investigated. In the hydrodynamic regime the frequency is always slightly smaller than the $\sqrt{2}ω_\perp$ value holding for gases interacting with contact interactions. In the collisionless regime the frequency can be either pretty smaller or larger than the non-interacting value $2ω_\perp$, depending on the cloud aspect ratio. Our results suggest that the frequency of the surface quadrupole oscillation can provide a useful test for studying, at very low temperatures, the transition between the normal and the superfluid phase and, in the normal phase at higher temperatures, the crossover between the collisional and collisionless regimes. The consequences of the anisotropy of the dipolar force on the virial theorem are also discussed.

The Fermi-polaron in two dimensions: Importance of the two-body bound state

We investigate a single impurity interacting with a free two-dimensional atomic Fermi gas. The interaction between the impurity and the gas is characterized by an arbitrary attractive short-range potential, which, in two dimensions, always admits a two-particle bound state. We provide analytical expressions for the energy and the effective mass of the dressed impurity by including the two-body bound state, which is crucial for strong interactions, in the integral equation for the effective interaction. Using the same method we give also the results for the polaron parameters in one and three dimensions finding a pretty good agreement with previous known results. Thus our relations can be used as a simple way to estimate the polaron parameters once the two-body bound state of the interaction potential is known.

Acoustic white holes in flowing atomic Bose-Einstein condensates

We study acoustic white holes in a steadily flowing atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. A white hole configuration is obtained when the flow velocity goes from a super-sonic value in the upstream region to a sub-sonic one in the downstream region. The scattering of phonon wavepackets on a white hole horizon is numerically studied in terms of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation of mean-field theory: dynamical stability of the acoustic white hole is found, as well as a signature of a nonlinear back-action of the incident phonon wavepacket onto the horizon. The correlation pattern of density fluctuations is numerically studied by means of the truncated-Wigner method which includes quantum fluctuations. Signatures of the white hole radiation of correlated phonon pairs by the horizon are characterized; analogies and differences with Hawking radiation from acoustic black holes are discussed. In particular, a short wavelength feature is identified in the density correlation function, whose amplitude steadily grows in time since the formation of the horizon. The numerical observations are quantitatively interpreted by means of an analytical Bogoliubov theory of quantum fluctuations for a white hole configuration within the step-like horizon approximation.

Metastability in spin polarised Fermi gases and quasiparticle decays

We investigate the metastability associated with the first order transition from normal to superfluid phases in the phase diagram of two-component polarised Fermi gases. We begin by detailing the dominant decay processes of single quasiparticles.Having determined the momentum thresholds of each process and calculated their rates, we apply this understanding to a Fermi sea of polarons by linking its metastability to the stability of individual polarons, and predicting a region of metastability for the normal partially polarised phase. In the limit of a single impurity, this region extends from the interaction strength at which a polarised phase of molecules becomes the groundstate, to the one at which the single quasiparticle groundstate changes character from polaronic to molecular. Our argument in terms of a Fermi sea of polarons naturally suggests their use as an experimental probe. We propose experiments to observe the threshold of the predicted region of metastability, the interaction strength at which the quasiparticle groundstate changes character, and the decay rate of polarons.

Spin fluctuations, susceptibility and the dipole oscillation of a nearly ferromagnetic Fermi gas

We discuss the spin fluctuations and the role played by the magnetic susceptibility in an atomic Fermi gas interacting with positive scattering length. Both thermal and quantum fluctuations are considered. Using a sum rule approach and recent {\it ab initio} Monte Carlo results for the magnetic susceptibility of uniform matter we provide explicit predictions for the frequency of the spin dipole oscillation of a gas trapped by a harmonic potential and discuss the deviations from the behaviour of an ideal gas when the system approaches the ferromagnetic transition. The role of the Landau's parameters in the characterization of the magnetic properties is also discussed.

Spin oscillations of the normal polarized Fermi gas at Unitarity

Using density functional theory in a time dependent approach we determine the frequencies of the compressional modes of the normal phase of a Fermi gas at unitarity as a function of its polarization. Our energy functional accounts for the typical elastic deformations exhibited by Landau theory of Fermi liquids. The comparison with the available experiments is biased by important collisional effects affecting both the {\it in phase} and the {\it out of phase} oscillations even at the lowest temperatures. New experiments in the collisionless regime would provide a crucial test of the applicability of Landau theory to the dynamics of these strongly interacting normal Fermi gases.

Density correlations and dynamical Casimir emission of Bogoliubov phonons in modulated atomic Bose-Einstein condensates

We present a theory of the density correlations that appear in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate as a consequence of the dynamical Casimir emission of pairs of Bogoliubov phonons when the atom-atom scattering length is modulated in time. Different regimes as a function of the temporal shape of the modulation are identified and a simple physical picture of the phenomenon is discussed. Analytical expressions for the density correlation function are provided for the most significant limiting cases. This theory is able to explain some unexpected features recently observed in numerical calculations of Hawking radiation from analog black holes.

Casimir forces between defects in one-dimensional quantum liquids

We discuss the effective interactions between two localized perturbations in one-dimensional (1D) quantum liquids. For non-interacting fermions, the interactions exhibit Friedel oscillations, giving rise to a RKKY-type interaction familiar from impurity spins in metals. In the interacting case, at low energies, a Luttinger liquid description applies. In the case of repulsive fermions, the Friedel oscillations of the interacting system are replaced, at long distances, by a universal Casimir-type interaction which depends only on the sound velocity and decays inversely with the separation. The Casimir-type interaction between localized perturbations embedded in a fermionic environment gives rise to a long range coupling between quantum dots in ultracold Fermi gases, opening a novel alternative to couple qubits with neutral atoms. We also briefly discuss the case of bosonic quantum liquids in which the interaction between weak impurities turns out to be short ranged, decaying exponentially on the scale of the healing length.
