A Poincaré map for the horocycle flow on $PSL(2,\mathbb{Z})\backslash \mathbb{H}$ and the Stern-Brocot tree

We construct a Poincaré map $\mathcal{P}_h$ for the positive horocycle flow on the modular surface $PSL(2,\mathbb{Z})\backslash \mathbb{H}$, and begin a systematic study of its dynamical properties. In particular we give a complete characterisation of the periodic orbits of $\mathcal{P}_h$, and show that they are equidistributed with respect to the invariant measure of $\mathcal{P}_h$ and that they can be organised in a tree by using the Stern-Brocot tree of rational numbers. In addition we introduce a time-reparameterisation of $\mathcal{P}_h$ which gives an insight into the dynamics of the non-periodic orbits. This paper constitutes a first step in the study of the dynamical properties of the horocycle flow by purely dynamical methods.

The Manifold Of Variations: impact location of short-term impactors

The interest in the problem of small asteroids observed shortly before a deep close approach or an impact with the Earth has grown a lot in recent years. Since the observational dataset of such objects is very limited, they deserve dedicated orbit determination and hazard assessment methods. The currently available systems are based on the systematic ranging, a technique providing a 2-dimensional manifold of orbits compatible with the observations, the so-called Manifold Of Variations. In this paper we first review the Manifold Of Variations method, to then show how this set of virtual asteroids can be used to predict the impact location of short-term impactors, and compare the results with those of already existent methods.

A slow triangle map with a segment of indifferent fixed points and a complete tree of rational pairs

We study the two-dimensional continued fraction algorithm introduced in \cite{garr} and the associated \emph{triangle map} $T$, defined on a triangle $\triangle\subset \R^2$. We introduce a slow version of the triangle map, the map $S$, which is ergodic with respect to the Lebesgue measure and preserves an infinite Lebesgue-absolutely continuous invariant measure. We discuss the properties that the two maps $T$ and $S$ share with the classical Gauss and Farey maps on the interval, including an analogue of the weak law of large numbers and of Khinchin's weak law for the digits of the triangle sequence, the expansion associated to $T$. Finally, we confirm the role of the map $S$ as a two-dimensional version of the Farey map by introducing a complete tree of rational pairs, constructed using the inverse branches of $S$, in the same way as the Farey tree is generated by the Farey map, and then, equivalently, generated by a generalised mediant operation.

Representation and coding of rational pairs on a Triangular tree and Diophantine approximation in $\mathbb{R}^2$

In this paper we study the properties of the \emph{Triangular tree}, a complete tree of rational pairs introduced in \cite{cas}, in analogy with the main properties of the Farey tree (or Stern-Brocot tree). To our knowledge the Triangular tree is the first generalisation of the Farey tree constructed using the mediant operation. In particular we introduce a two-dimensional representation for the pairs in the tree, a coding which describes how to reach a pair by motions on the tree, and its description in terms of $SL(3,\mathbb{Z})$ matrices. The tree and the properties we study are then used to introduce rational approximations of non-rational pairs.
