The Determinant Line Bundle for Fredholm Operators: Construction, Properties, and Classification

We provide a thorough construction of a system of compatible determinant line bundles over spaces of Fredholm operators, fully verify that this system satisfies a number of important properties, and include explicit formulas for all relevant isomorphisms between these line bundles. We also completely describe all possible systems of compatible determinant line bundles and compare the conventions and approaches used elsewhere in the literature.

Mirror Symmetry for Stable Quotients Invariants

The moduli space of stable quotients introduced by Marian-Oprea-Pandharipande provides a natural compactification of the space of morphisms from nonsingular curves to a nonsingular projective variety and carries a natural virtual class. We show that the analogue of Givental's J-function for the resulting twisted projective invariants is described by the same mirror hypergeometric series as the corresponding Gromov-Witten invariants (which arise from the moduli space of stable maps), but without the mirror transform (in the Calabi-Yau case). This implies that the stable quotients and Gromov-Witten twisted invariants agree if there is enough "positivity", but not in all cases. As a corollary of the proof, we show that certain twisted Hurwitz numbers arising in the stable quotients theory are also described by a fundamental object associated with this hypergeometric series. We thus completely answer some of the questions posed by Marian-Oprea-Pandharipande concerning their invariants. Our results suggest a deep connection between the stable quotients invariants of complete intersections and the geometry of the mirror families. As in Gromov-Witten theory, computing Givental's J-function (essentially a generating function for genus 0 invariants with 1 marked point) is key to computing stable quotients invariants of higher genus and with more marked points; we exploit this in forthcoming papers.

A recursion for counts of real curves in CP^{2n-1}: another proof

In a recent paper, we obtained a WDVV-type relation for real genus 0 Gromov-Witten invariants with conjugate pairs of insertions; it specializes to a complete recursion in the case of odd-dimensional projective spaces. This note provides another, more complex-geometric, proof of the latter. The main part of this approach readily extends to real symplectic manifolds with empty real locus, but not to the general case.

Counting genus zero real curves in symplectic manifolds

There are two types of $J$-holomorphic spheres in a symplectic manifold invariant under an anti-symplectic involution: those that have a fixed point locus and those that do not. The former are described by moduli spaces of $J$-holomorphic disks, which are well studied in the literature. In this paper, we first study moduli spaces describing the latter and then combine the two types of moduli spaces to get a well-defined theory of counting real curves of genus 0. We use equivariant localization to show that these invariants (unlike the disk invariants) are essentially the same for the two (standard) involutions on $\mathbb{P}^{4n-1}$.

Lower Bounds for Enumerative Counts of Positive-Genus Real Curves

We transform the positive-genus real Gromov-Witten invariants of many real-orientable symplectic threefolds into signed counts of curves. These integer invariants provide lower bounds for counts of real curves of a given genus that pass through conjugate pairs of constraints. We conclude with some implications and related conjectures for one- and two-partition Hodge integrals.

Real Gromov-Witten Theory in All Genera and Real Enumerative Geometry: Computation

The first part of this work constructs real positive-genus Gromov-Witten invariants of real-orientable symplectic manifolds of odd "complex" dimensions; the second part studies the orientations on the moduli spaces of real maps used in constructing these invariants. The present paper applies the results of the latter to obtain quantitative and qualitative conclusions about the invariants defined in the former. After describing large collections of real-orientable symplectic manifolds, we show that the real genus 1 Gromov-Witten invariants of sufficiently positive almost Kahler threefolds are signed counts of real genus 1 curves only and thus provide direct lower bounds for the counts of these curves in such targets. We specify real orientations on the real-orientable complete intersections in projective spaces; the real Gromov-Witten invariants they determine are in a sense canonically determined by the complete intersection itself, (at least) in most cases. We also obtain equivariant localization data that computes the real invariants of projective spaces and determines the contributions from many torus fixed loci for other complete intersections. Our results confirm Walcher's predictions for the vanishing of these invariants in certain cases and for the localization data in other cases.

Absolute vs. Relative Gromov-Witten Invariants

In light of recent attempts to extend the Cieliebak-Mohnke approach for constructing Gromov-Witten invariants to positive genera, we compare the absolute and relative Gromov-Witten invariants of compact symplectic manifolds when the symplectic hypersurface contains no relevant holomorphic curves. We show that these invariants are then the same, except in a narrow range of dimensions of the target and genera of the domains, and provide examples when they fail to be the same.

On Symplectic Sum Formulas in Gromov-Witten Theory

This manuscript describes in detail the symplectic sum formulas in Gromov-Witten theory and related topological and analytic issues. In particular, we analyze and compare two analytic approaches to these formulas. The Ionel-Parker formula contains two unique features, rim tori refinements of relative invariants and the so-called S-matrix, which have been a mystery in GW-theory over the past decade. We explain why the latter, which appears due to imprecise reasoning, should not be present and how the former should be interpreted. While the gluing argument in the IP work attempts to address all of the issues relevant to certain "semi-positive" cases, it contains several highly technical, but crucial, mistakes, which invalidate it and thus the whole paper almost completely. The SFT type idea behind the Li-Ruan approach has the potential of avoiding many issues with the degeneration of the metric on the target occurring in the IP approach. Unfortunately, the LR paper is vague about the key notions and aspects of the setup, including the definition of relative stable maps, and does not contain even a description of the local structure of the relative moduli space or an attempt at a complete proof of any major statement. The only technical arguments in this paper concern fairly minor points and are either incorrect or unnecessary. Neither of the two papers even considers gluing stable maps with extra rubber structure, which is necessary for defining the relevant invariants outside of a relatively narrow collection of "semi-positive" cases. In this manuscript, we re-formulate the (numerical) symplectic sum formula, describe the issues arising in both approaches, and explain how the Li-Ruan SFT type idea can be used to address them.

On the Refined Symplectic Sum Formula for Gromov-Witten Invariants

We describe the extent to which Ionel-Parker's proposed refinement of the standard relative Gromov-Witten invariants sharpens the usual symplectic sum formula. The key product operation on the target spaces for the refined invariants is specified in terms of abelian covers of symplectic divisors, making it suitable for studying from a topological perspective. We give several qualitative applications of this refinement, which include vanishing results for Gromov-Witten invariants.

On the Rim Tori Refinement of Relative Gromov-Witten Invariants

We construct Ionel-Parker's proposed refinement of the standard relative Gromov-Witten invariants in terms of abelian covers of the symplectic divisor and discuss in what sense it gives rise to invariants. We use it to obtain some vanishing results for the standard relative Gromov-Witten invariants. In a separate paper, we describe to what extent this refinement sharpens the usual symplectic sum formula and give further qualitative applications.

The moduli space of maps with crosscaps: Fredholm theory and orientability

Just as a symmetric surface with separating fixed locus halves into two oriented bordered surfaces, an arbitrary symmetric surface halves into two oriented symmetric half-surfaces, i.e. surfaces with crosscaps. Motivated in part by the string theory view of real Gromov-Witten invariants, we introduce moduli spaces of maps from surfaces with crosscaps, develop the relevant Fredholm theory, and resolve the orientability problem in this setting. In particular, we give an explicit formula for the holonomy of the orientation bundle of a family of real Cauchy-Riemann operators over Riemann surfaces with crosscaps. Special cases of our formulas are closely related to the orientability question for the space of real maps from symmetric Riemann surfaces to an almost complex manifold with an anti-complex involution and in fact resolve this question in genus 0. In particular, we show that the moduli space of real J-holomorphic maps from the sphere with a fixed-point free involution to a simply connected almost complex manifold with an even canonical class is orientable. In a sequel, we use the results of this paper to obtain a similar orientability statement for genus 1 real maps.

The moduli space of maps with crosscaps: the relative signs of the natural automorphisms

Just as a symmetric surface with separating fixed locus halves into two oriented bordered surfaces, an arbitrary symmetric surface halves into two oriented symmetric half-surfaces, i.e. surfaces with crosscaps. Motivated in part by the string theory view of real Gromov-Witten invariants, we previously introduced moduli spaces of maps from surfaces with crosscaps, developed the relevant Fredholm theory, and resolved the orientability problem in this setting. In this paper, we determine the relative signs of the automorphisms of these moduli spaces induced by interchanges of boundary components of the domain and by the anti-symplectic involution on the target manifold, without any global assumptions on the latter. As immediate applications, we describe sufficient conditions for the moduli spaces of real genus 1 maps and for real maps with separating fixed locus to be orientable; we treat the general genus 2+ case in a separate paper. Our sign computations also lead to an extension of recent Floer-theoretic applications of anti-symplectic involutions and to a related reformulation of these results in a more natural way.

Double and Triple Givental's J-functions for Stable Quotients Invariants

We use mirror formulas for the stable quotients analogue of Givental's J-function for twisted projective invariants obtained in a previous paper to obtain mirror formulas for the analogues of the double and triple Givental's J-functions (with descendants at all marked points) in this setting. We then observe that the genus 0 stable quotients invariants need not satisfy the divisor, string, or dilaton relations of the Gromov-Witten theory, but they do possess the integrality properties of the genus 0 three-point Gromov-Witten invariants of Calabi-Yau manifolds. We also relate the stable quotients invariants to the BPS counts arising in Gromov-Witten theory and obtain mirror formulas for certain twisted Hurwitz numbers.

Mirror Symmetry for Closed, Open, and Unoriented Gromov-Witten Invariants

In the first part of this paper, we obtain mirror formulas for twisted genus 0 two-point Gromov-Witten (GW) invariants of projective spaces and for the genus 0 two-point GW-invariants of Fano and Calabi-Yau complete intersections. This extends previous results for projective hypersurfaces, following the same approach, but we also completely describe the structure coefficients in both cases and obtain relations between these coefficients that are vital to the applications to mirror symmetry in the rest of this paper. In the second and third parts of this paper, we confirm Walcher's mirror symmetry conjectures for the annulus and Klein bottle GW-invariants of Calabi-Yau complete intersection threefolds; these applications are the main results of this paper. In a separate paper, the genus~0 two-point formulas are used to obtain mirror formulas for the genus~1 GW-invariants of all Calabi-Yau complete intersections.

Orientability in real Gromov-Witten theory

The orientability problem in real Gromov-Witten theory is one of the fundamental hurdles to enumerating real curves. In this paper, we describe topological conditions on the target manifold which ensure that the uncompactified moduli spaces of real maps are orientable for all genera of and for all types of involutions on the domain. In contrast to the typical approaches to this problem, we do not compute the signs of any diffeomorphisms, but instead compare them. Many projective complete intersections, including the renowned quintic threefold, satisfy our topological conditions. Our main result yields real Gromov-Witten invariants of arbitrary genus for real symplectic manifolds that satisfy these conditions and have empty real locus and illustrates the significance of previously introduced moduli spaces of maps with crosscaps. We also apply it to study the orientability of the moduli spaces of real Hurwitz covers.

Reduced Genus-One Gromov-Witten Invariants

In a previous paper we described a natural closed subset of the moduli space of stable genus-one J-holomorphic maps into a symplectic manifold X. In this paper we generalize the definition of the main component to moduli spaces of perturbed, in a restricted way, J-holomorphic maps. This generalization implies that the main component, just like the entire moduli space, carries a virtual fundamental class and can be used to define symplectic invariants. These truly genus-one invariants constitute part of the standard genus-one Gromov-Witten invariants, which arise from the entire moduli space. The new invariants are more geometric and can be used to compute the genus-one GW-invariants of complete intersections, as shown in a separate paper.

The Genus 0 Gromov-Witten Invariants of Projective Complete Intersections

We describe the structure of mirror formulas for genus 0 Gromov-Witten invariants of projective complete intersections with any number of marked points and provide an explicit algorithm for obtaining the relevant structure coefficients. The structural description alone suffices for some qualitative applications, such as vanishing results and the bounds on the growth of these invariants predicted by R. Pandharipande.

A Desingularization of the Main Component of the Moduli Space of Genus-One Stable Maps into $\Bbb{P}^n$

We construct a desingularization of the ``main component'' $\bar{\mathfrak M}_{1,k}^0(\Bbb{P}^n,d)$ of the moduli space $\bar{\mathfrak M}_{1,k}(\Bbb{P}^n,d)$ of genus-one stable maps into the complex projective space $\Bbb{P}^n$. As a bonus, we obtain desingularizations of certain natural sheaves over $\bar{\mathfrak M}_{1,k}^0(\Bbb{P}^n,d)$. Such desingularizations are useful for integrating natural cohomology classes on $\bar{\mathfrak M}_{1,k}^0(\Bbb{P}^n,d)$ using localization. In turn, these classes can be used to compute the genus-one Gromov-Witten invariants of complete intersections and classical enumerative invariants of projective spaces involving genus-one curves. The desingularization of $\bar{\mathfrak M}_{1,k}^0(\Bbb{P}^n,d)$ is obtained by sequentially blowing up $\bar{\mathfrak M}_{1,k}(\Bbb{P}^n,d)$ along ``bad'' subvarieties. At the end of the process, we are left with a modification of the main component, which turns out to be nonsingular.

A Sharp Compactness Theorem for Genus-One Pseudo-Holomorphic Maps

For each compact almost Kahler manifold $(X,\om,J)$ and an element A of $H_2(X;Z)$, we describe a closed subspace $\ov{\frak M}_{1,k}^0(X,A;J)$ of the moduli space $\ov{\frak M}_{1,k}(X,A;J)$ of stable J-holomorphic genus-one maps such that $\ov{\frak M}_{1,k}^0(X,A;J)$ contains all stable maps with smooth domains. If $(P^n,\om,J_0)$ is the standard complex projective space, $\ov{\frak M}_{1,k}^0(P^n,A;J_0)$ is an irreducible component of $\ov{\frak M}_{1,k}(P^n,A;J_0)$. We also show that if an almost complex structure $J$ on $P^n$ is sufficiently close to J_0, the structure of the space $\ov{\frak M}_{1,k}^0(P^n,A;J)$ is similar to that of $\ov{\frak M}_{1,k}^0(P^n,A;J_0)$. This paper's compactness and structure theorems lead to new invariants for some symplectic manifolds, which are generalized to arbitrary symplectic manifolds in a separate paper. Relatedly, the smaller moduli space $\ov\M_{1,k}^0(X,A;J)$ is useful for computing the genus-one Gromov-Witten invariants, which arise from the larger moduli space $\ov\M_{1,k}(X,A;J)$.

Standard vs. Reduced Genus-One Gromov-Witten Invariants

We give an explicit formula for the difference between the standard and reduced genus-one Gromov-Witten invariants. Combined with previous work on geometric properties of the latter, this paper makes it possible to compute the standard genus-one GW-invariants of complete intersections. In particular, we obtain a closed formula for the genus-one GW-invariants of a Calabi-Yau projective hypersurface and verify a recent mirror symmetry prediction for a sextic fourfold as a special case.

Counting rational curves of arbitrary shape in projective spaces

We present an approach to a large class of enumerative problems concerning rational curves in projective spaces. This approach uses analysis to obtain topological information about moduli spaces of stable maps. We demonstrate it by enumerating one-component rational curves with a triple point or a tacnodal point in the three-dimensional projective space and with a cusp in any projective space.
