Spectroscopic analysis of vibronic relaxation pathways in molecular spin qubit $[$Ho(W$_5$O$_{18}$)$_2]^{9-}$: sparse spectra are key

Molecular vibrations play a key role in magnetic relaxation processes of molecular spin qubits as they couple to spin states, leading to the loss of quantum information. Direct experimental determination of vibronic coupling is crucial to understand and control the spin dynamics of these nano-objects, which represent the limit of miniaturization for quantum devices. Herein, we measure the vibrational properties of the molecular spin qubit $[$Ho(W$_5$O$_{18}$)$_2]^{9-}$ by means of magneto-infrared spectroscopy. Our results allow us to unravel the vibrational decoherence pathways in combination with $ab$ $initio$ calculations including vibronic coupling. We observe field-induced spectral changes near 63 and 370 cm$^{-1}$ that are modeled in terms of $f$-manifold crystal field excitations activated by odd-symmetry vibrations. The overall extent of vibronic coupling in this system is limited by a transparency window in the phonon density of states that acts to keep the intramolecular vibrations and $M_J$ levels apart. These findings advance the understanding of vibronic coupling in molecular magnets, place significant constraints on the pattern of crystal field levels in these systems, and provide a strategy for designing molecular spin qubits with improved coherence lifetimes.

Reinforced Room temperature spin filtering in chiral paramagnetic metallopeptides

Chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS), whereby helical molecules polarize the spin of electrical current, is an intriguing effect with potential applications in nanospintronics. In this nascent field, the study of paramagnetic chiral molecules, which could introduce another degree of freedom in the control of the spin transport, remains so far unexplored. To address this challenge, herein, we propose the use of self-assembled monolayers of helical lanthanide-binding peptides. In order to elucidate the effect of the paramagnetic nuclei, monolayers of the peptide coordinating paramagnetic or diamagnetic ions are prepared. By means of spin-dependent electrochemistry, CISS effect is demonstrated by cyclic voltammetry and impedance measurements for both samples. Additionally, an implementation of the standard liquid-metal drop electron transport setup has been carried out, demonstrating their suitability for solid-state devices. Remarkably, the inclusion of a paramagnetic center in the peptide increases the spin polarization as independently proved by different techniques. These findings permit the inclusion of magnetic biomolecules in the CISS field, paving the way to their implementation in a new generation of spintronic nanodevices.

Ar:N$_2$ - a non-universal glass

The bias energies of various two-level systems (TLSs) and their strengths of interactions with the strain are calculated for Ar:N$_2$ glass. Unlike the case in KBr:CN, a distinct class of TLSs having weak interaction with the strain and untypically small bias energies is not found. The addition of CO molecules introduces CO flips which form such a class of weakly interacting TLSs, albeit at much lower coupling than are typically observed in solids. We conclude that because of the absence of a distinct class of weakly interacting TLSs, Ar:N$_2$ is a non-universal glass, the first such system in three dimensions and in ambient pressure. Our results further suggest that Ar:N$_2$:CO may show universal properties, but at temperatures lower than $\approx 0.1$ K, much smaller than typical temperature $\approx 3$ K associated with universality, because of the untypical softness of this system. Our results thus shed light on two long standing questions regarding low temperature properties of glasses: the necessary and sufficient conditions for quantitative universality of phonon attenuation, and what dictates the energy scale of $\approx 3$ K below which universality it typically observed.

Quantum Error Correction with magnetic molecules

Quantum algorithms often assume independent spin qubits to produce trivial $|\uparrow\rangle=|0\rangle$, $|\downarrow\rangle=|1\rangle$ mappings. This can be unrealistic in many solid-state implementations with sizeable magnetic interactions. Here we show that the lower part of the spectrum of a molecule containing three exchange-coupled metal ions with $S=1/2$ and $I=1/2$ is equivalent to nine electron-nuclear qubits. We derive the relation between spin states and qubit states in reasonable parameter ranges for the rare earth $^{159}$Tb$^{3+}$ and for the transition metal Cu$^{2+}$, and study the possibility to implement Shor's Quantum Error Correction code on such a molecule. We also discuss recently developed molecular systems that could be adequate from an experimental point of view.

SIMPRE: Installation and User Manual

This is the installation and used manual of SIMPRE 1.1, a fortran77 code that can implement different effective electrostatic models based on point charges around a rare earth ion. The program calculates the full set of crystal field parameters, Stark energy levels and spin wave functions, as well as magnetic properties. The package has already been successfully applied to several mononuclear systems with single-molecule magnetic behavior. The determination of effective point charge parameters in these studies facilitates its application to new systems. SIMPRE was presented in DOI:10.1002/jcc.23341, and SIMPRE 1.1, an updated version that follows the prevailing Crystal Field conventions was presented in DOI:10.1002/jcc.23699.

Coherent manipulation of spin qubits based on polyoxometalates: the case of the single ion magnet [GdW$_{30}$P$_5$O$_{110}$]$^{12-}$

Polyoxometalate single ion magnet [GdW$_{30}$P$_5$O$_{110}$]$^{12-}$ has been studied by generalized Rabi oscillation experiments. It was possible to increase the number of coherent rotations tenfold through matching the Rabi frequency with the frequency of the proton. Achieving high coherence with polyoxometalate chemistry, we show their excellent potential not only for the storage of quantum information but even for the realization of quantum algorithms.

Identification of strong and weak interacting two level systems in KBr:CN

Tunneling two level systems (TLSs) are believed to be the source of phenomena such as the universal low temperature properties in disordered and amorphous solids, and $1/f$ noise. The existence of these phenomena in a large variety of dissimilar physical systems testifies for the universal nature of the TLSs, which however, is not yet known. Following a recent suggestion that attributes the low temperature TLSs to inversion pairs [M. Schechter and P.C.E. Stamp, arXiv:0910.1283.] we calculate explicitly the TLS-phonon coupling of inversion symmetric and asymmetric TLSs in a given disordered crystal. Our work (a) estimates parameters that support the theory in M. Schechter and P.C.E. Stamp, arXiv:0910.1283, in its general form, and (b) positively identifies, for the first time, the relevant TLSs in a given system.
