Nonequilibrium 2PI evolution of the O(N) model with longitudinal expansion

Motivated by the problem of thermalization in heavy-ion collisions, we present numerical simulations of the nonequilibrium evolution of the O(N) model in 1+2 dimensions with longitudinal expansion and in the presence of a background field. We work in the NLO approximation of the 1/N expansion and consider both the strong and weak coupling cases. Special emphasis is put on the difference between the 2PI formalism and the classical statistical approach. In the 2PI case at strong coupling, we find some evidence of the Bose-Einstein (exponential) distribution in the expanding system.

Entropy Production in Gluodynamics in temporal axial gauge in 2+1 dimensions

Entropy production in non-Abelian gauge theory is discussed in the limit of vanishing classical fields. Based on the Kadanoff-Baym equation with the leading order self-energy in the temporal axial gauge, the kinetic entropy is introduced and is proven to increase for a given self-energy. Numerical simulation of the Kadanoff-Baym equation for the non-Abelian gauge theory is performed in 2+1 dimensions. Starting from anisotropic distribution in momentum space, relaxation to isotropic distribution proceeds and the entropy is produced due to off-shell scattering of massive transverse polarization mode as expected from the proof of the H-theorem.

Towards thermalization in heavy-ion collisions: CGC meets the 2PI formalism

We propose to apply the two-particle irreducible (2PI) formalism to the problem of thermalization in heavy-ion collisions in the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) picture. We consider the 2PI effective action to three loops and derive a set of coupled equations for the classical Yang-Mills field and the quantum fluctuations in the boost invariant coordinate system. The initial condition and the relation to previous works are also discussed.

Entropy production in 2D $λϕ^4$ theory in the Kadanoff-Baym approach

We study non-equilibrium quantum dynamics of the single-component scalar field theory in 1+1 space-time dimensions on the basis of the Kadanoff-Baym equation including the next-to-leading-order (NLO) skeleton diagrams. As an extension of the non-relativistic case, we derive relativistic kinetic entropy at the first order in the gradient expansion of the Kadanoff-Baym equations. The derived entropy satisfies the H theorem. Next we perform numerical simulations in spatially homogeneous configurations to investigate thermalization properties of the system by evaluating the system entropy. We find that at later times the kinetic entropy increases approaching the equilibrium value, although the limited time interval in the early stage invalidates the use of it.
